2 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2014 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 05/13/2021

My dash lights never indicated any low oil. Ended up running out of oil and I started keeping track. I was putting in a qt a day. No visible signs on motor or ground of oil leak. But smoke in tail pipe. Then today the motor blow completely even w oil in it. I searched up my make and model. Their are tons of recalls for the oil leak ad I said, and for the instrument panel not working. But my dealership said I have no recalls what's so ever and non have been done on this car. Some of those recalls I read said it could catch fire!!.

3 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2019 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/29/2020

2019 Ford Escape titanium steering wheel shakes/vibrates heavy & makes a loud noise from car (almost sounds like a bad loud muffler sound) at speeds of 35 mph & 45mph when the gas peddle is leveled at speed and also does the same when going up an incline at the same speeds. Also transmission slips between 1 & 2 gears intermittently. Very bumpy ride in the back when going 70 mph on the highway. These issues happen when on local roads & highway ramps. Dealer repair has checked several times. First few times they could not replicate the issue. December 29, 2020 finally got the issue to replicate and put a ticket directly into Ford. I checked back on 1/7/2021 since I bare the heard from the dealer service rep. At that time she still didn't have an answer to a resolution to fix the fault. I called today 1/13/2021 and the dealer repair service rep said it was a characteristic of the model because they informed Ford on the ticket they tested another 2019 Escape with the same engine & transmission and it had the same fault. Car was manufactured 3/2019. Please note I have purchased brand new Ford Escapes in 2002, 2005, 2009, 2017 & 2019. I know how the engine & transmission of a Ford Escape should preform. I still have my 2009 Escape and it preforms better then this 2019. . . Comparable engines & trim package. The faults this 2019 is having are not characteristics of a car they are clearly issues where parts need to be replaced or repaired to operate properly. Ford needs to do the right thing and find what is causing the issue and repair it correctly.

4 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2013 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/05/2020

In januaryand February of 2019 I took my 2013 Ford Escape to sonora Ford in sonora,CA because it started stalling on me. It happened usually after starting the vehicle and driving 50 to 100 feet and then it would start to sputter and die. I got no lights on the dashboard no check engine light. It seems to do it every two or three stops. Sonora Ford checked it and said they would have to check it later they told me something was wrong in the manifold but they would have to terret down to find out. They said I what is missing a bolt in my manifold gasket. The manifold gasket was replaced but after one week it was still was stalling. I took it back a week later and the manager of the service department drove it home to his house while it was hooked up to some machineand found nothing wrong. They told me they did not know what was wrong with it. I took it home and after a few weeks the stalling seemed to stop on its own until November 2020 now it's stalling again. I went on the internet and looked up my car and found that there's been trouble for years with this car stalling but sonora Ford did not bother to tell me this. There has been several close calls as I pull into traffic and the car stalled but yesterday I had my two younger grandchildren in the car and it seem to be fine and I pulled out in traffic, after about 20 yards it stalled and the vehicle behind me had to slam on their brakes and swerve to avoid rear ending me. I am sending you this email on a Saturday. I have an appointment on Tuesday, the 8th of December for my 5000 mile oil change and I plan on telling the dealership that they need to do something about this. Can you give me any advice about what to do to have them help me. Thank you.

8 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2015 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/26/2019

The car a 2015 Ford Escape se awd with ~ 86,600 miles would shut off and have to be restarted after sitting for awhile. It also started to run a little rough. So I took into a Ford dealership for service and a tune up on December 24th 2019. After the tune up it still exhibited the same rough riding and shut off. The next day on December 25th after sitting overnight shutoff initially and had to be restarted. While backing out of the driveway it shuddered violently and white smoke poured out of the tail pipe. I pulled it back into the garage, and took it back to the Ford dealership the following morning December the 26th. After some time the assistant service manager informed me that it was leaking coolant into the engine, and that one of the spark plugs had been fouled with coolant. After more testing and holding the car for two weeks they informed me that I needed a new engine. What's odd is that I never witnessed the car over heating, and the check engine light didn't come on till I was driving the car back to the Ford dealership on the morning of December the 26th. Ford customer assistance says that they'll pay 1/4 of the cost to replace the engine. After doing some research I've found quite a few Escape owners that have had similar complaints with the same issue of coolant leaking into the engine and have been told that they need a new engine. These engines are failing prematurely due to engines over heating and the blocks failing. I suspect that the coolant sensor is also defective. This 2015 Escape was purchased new at the end of 2014, and maintained by regular oil changes and maintenance.

10 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2001 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 05/12/2019

While driving down the highway going 60 mph , my car started shaking almost uncontrollably , making a loud noise like the mmuffler was falling off. I pulled off the road , shut the car off. Open the hood to find the coil laying on the motor and the spark plug no where to be found. Called a friend who's a mechanic , he went n got a new spark plug , put it in and the car drove fine for about 5 weeks. Because yesterday coming off the parkway the car started smelling like gasoline inside and making noise like the muffler came off. So I pulled into a walmart parking lot only to find that it happened once again . . . The spark plug has blown out of the engine twice now in the last month and a half. Now the spark plug will not go back in. When we went to get another spark plug the man at the parts store said thus is a common problem with Fords. That is not exceptable!! I have to lose a day of work to take it to a mechanics shop. My daughters and grandchildren were in the car. If this is a common problem you need to fix it before someone gets hurt.

12 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2013 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/07/2018

I just bought this car used after a week of driving I say a check engine light it was an engine misfire on #3 so I bought spark plugs and a new coil, I installed it, and it drove home fine. Then I took it to the dealer for an oil change, who missed it was low on coolant, a message came up saying low coolant the next day. I then kept going between low coolant and check engine until white smoke came out the tail pipe and the car started cutting off. Fyi bought all my parts from the dealer spark plugs, coil, coolant, and I tried to address everything right away.

13 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/29/2017

While driving my steering became really hard to turn still was able to go down the road but it was very difficult to turn. Took my Escape to a repair shop and was told my electronic steering sensor is bad. I do not have the time nor the money to deal with this issue and this is definitely a safety issue. I also have an issue with my exhaust manifold leaking three exhaust manifold bolts are broken off causing a hissing noise. I can smell the exhaust in my vehicle when parked.

14 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2014 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/17/2017

I was driving on the highway 1 1/2 miles from my home when the engine cut out. I was able to drift to the side of the highway and come to a stop. I remained in the car and smelled burning. There was smoke coming from the engine compartment. After a few minutes the smoke stopped. There were no trouble/warning lights prior to the engine failure. I arranged to be towed to our regular mechanic. He informed me that he thought I should get the vehicle to a Ford dealership, as there had been a fire in the engine compartment and there was a high probability that it was related to a Ford recall 17s09. The vehicle was towed to a nearby Ford dealership and a diagnostic was performed. The service manager also suspected that it was part of the issue associated with the recall. He opened a Ford "hotline" case. A day or so later the service manager called and said that they determined that it was not part of the recall because the coolant system had passed their pressure test and there had not been a coolant leak. He also determined that there was a cracked head and cracked manifold, and that the vehicle had lost oil through the cracked head. When I inquired as to why the head would crack when the vehicle has regular oil changes (the most recent just 20 days prior) and the coolant system was full he didn't have an answer. At that time he said the engine would cost close to $5,000 to repair, but that he couldn't guarantee that it wouldn't have "other issues" related to the damages identified. Because of limited space here, I have attached a full description as a pdf.

15 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2015 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/29/2017

We were traveling in the car at approximately 80 mph. The car engine began to race strongly without a corresponding increase in speed. This happened twice and then a red oil indicator light came on. It sounded also like a head gasket blew on the 1. 6 liter eco-boost engine as there was a rattling noise like tumbling pebbles in a can or drum. We lost power. Blue smoke streamed out the tail pipe of the car. We coasted over to the shoulder of the highway and came to a stop. By the time the car came to a stop smoke was coming from under the hood of the car. I got out of the car and looked toward the engine compartment from the passenger side. Flames were coming from below the car just inside the front passenger side tire. We quickly got everyone and everything out of the car. The flames spread very quickly. The front half of the car was engulfed in flames in approximately 4 minutes and the whole car was consumed in about 8 or 9 minutes.

16 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2014 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 05/08/2017

Received recall 17s09 one week stating loss of coolant could cause cylinder head to crack and oil to leak out onto exhaust manifold and catch fire. The very next week while driving on a country road my Escape caught fire while driving. I was lucky to have drinks in the car to be able to get the fire out before the fire department got there. Towed vehicle to Ford shop and contacted Ford customer care knowing that they are aware of this problem and they will not assist me in repairing vehicle. The recall basically only states adding a low coolant sensor which in really will not help because if it becomes low on coolant the head is already cracked and damage is already done. Further more Ford knowing they have this problem doesn't even have parts available until at the earliest fall of 2017 so more people will be having car fires and may not be as lucky as I was to write this report.

17 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2014 Ford Escape

The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

21 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2013 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 05/23/2014

1. 6l ecoboost: service engine indicator comes on. Dealer has determined several instances of engine misfire. Initially too, a more urgent indicator light came on (amber) indicating that the coolant level is low. A yet more urgent indicator light comes on (red) indicating the engine is overheating and the engine is reduced to running on two cylinders. However, this indication appeared only shortly after the engine was started, and surely at that point, the engine was far from overheating. On other and subsequent incidences, engine misfires during the first seconds following start-up. After 3 to 5 seconds, engine usually stops misfiring. On a couple of occasions, this misfire-at-start-up event has been accompanied by a faint odor of antifreeze. The most recent misfire-at-start-up event included a faint smell of something/not fuel or oil, and gray smoke from the exhaust. Because dealer has tested the cooling system (okay) and no hint of coolant has been found on the ground or engine compartment, I'm now assuming that coolant is getting into one or more of cylinders, either from the engine head or from the turbo charger (it is water-cooled, I'm told) and is then coming out of the exhaust. Both tail pipes are carboned up. Mention of is made on several web posts and is apparently a common occurrence with ecoboost engines?? based on my vast (high school) knowledge of chemistry and the oxidation process, that just ain't right. I have asked fmc to replace the vehicle. They have thus far declined to do so.

22 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/13/2013

While traveling on highway with my family, at about 65 mph there was an engine shudder, then the yellow wrench light illuminated on left side of console. Engine was now vibrating and shaky. Stepped on gas and no acceleration, although all other electrical items were running. With the forward momentum I was able to get over. Pulled over to side of highway, called roadside assistance and in the process, I shut off the vehicle. The agent on the phone asked for the mileage of vehicle and I turned the vehicle on again. The yellow wrench light was off and the vehicle seemed normal. I was able to drive to the next exit and get off the highway and safely home. The vehicle has displayed no further issues since then. This vehicle had just been in for normal service the day prior, Saturday. After doing further research online it was found this brand of vehicle had a reported problem with the throttle manifold intake.

The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where it was repaired under recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 13v583000 (engine). After the remedy repair was performed the failure persisted. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 15,000.

24 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2001 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

Submission from re Ford Escape 2001 safety recall notice 11s24 the consumer received a recall notice in Jan 2012. The notice indicated she would be informed when the parts required to complete the safety recall would become available, which wouldn't be until the second quarter. The vehicle caught on fire while parked, which was prior to the recall, but was quickly extinguished. Shortly after the fire, the vehicle was repaired. Several months later, the consumer was partly compensated by Ford in the form of a check for $1900 accompanied by a document which stated by accepting the compensation, she would also be signing off on any other claims. The consumer also stated the catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, master cylinder, wiring harness, abs, brake line booster, power steering rack and pinion, tie rods, intake manifold as well as the air bag were all replaced. The steering column would freeze, the rear passenger door handle fell off, rendering the door unstable, the coolant light illuminated, the oil pan needed to be replaced, the air condition stopped working and the rear shock were leaking.

25 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/10/2011

While out of town Sunday July 10th 2011, 300 miles from home my 2005 Ford Escape caught on fire, od 90046. We got in the car started it up and then when looking at the map I looked up and smoke was pouring out from under the hood. As I jumped out the door came back and gouged my nose open. While bleeding all over the place I opened the hood and poured water over the fire. The car had caught on fire just under the rear side of the intake manifold. After extinguishing the fire, I called the local santa maria Ford dealer, who only offered our service department will be open tomorrow. I had the vehicle towed to the dealer that day and while there decided to have my wife look at a new car. Regardless of the fact that I put the flames out early and I as a maintenance officer with 24 years experience I could have fixed the car, I wanted my wife to have a new car so when I leave her behind for my next duty station in the marine corps and deploy, I would not have any worries. The sales experience was what I expected but my biggest issues were that, although the service department was closed, out of luck, yea right, the service manager stopped by to work on his RV and assisted in the appraisal of my 2005 Escape then left before I knew he was there. Due to the Ford defect, fire damage, they offered my $2,000 for a trade in. I talked them into around $4,200. I had a car that cost me $28,000 six years ago and due to a defect I got around $4,200 for it in great shape, except the very small fire damage> luckily we had the fire in a parking lot not while on a back road, off road, traffic jam. From research earlier Escape models have a history of engine fires, and some of the later, but nothing to date on the 2005. Ford corporate has yet to contact me about my complaint, I am asking them to acknowledge the problem and hope they would compensate me for the lost value in my trade in due to some type of obvious defect in their product. Case # 0389141921.

26 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2002 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/31/2010

While starting the engine after overnight parking, a loud explosion was heard and white smoke was seen coming from under the hood. The ignition was immediately turned off. Examination of the engine revealed a damaged decorative cover over the intake manifold and shattered intake manifolds. Two spark coils were later found to be damaged by the explosion. The heads were reconditioned as ignition leakage thru the unseated valves was a factor contributing to the ignition of the residual gases in the intake manifold. Secondary contribution was the original intake manifold was of an old style and not capable of withstanding the backfire force. A new, modified composite intake manifold was available but not on a recall.

The manufacturer was contacted but provided no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 84,000. The VIN was not available.

28 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 11/10/2008

This complaint applies to the 2009 Escape hybrid model only. While changing oil in the vehicle, it was observed that the oil filler tube is located directly above the exhaust manifold (one of the hottest parts of the engine bay). I spilled a small amount of oil while refilling (2 tablespoons) and noticed it dropped onto the manifold, which has some creases and folds in it that can catch the oil and pool it. Even though the engine had been off for a few minutes, it was still hot enough to start smoking slightly. After wiping up what oil I could with a rag, I restarted the engine and it began smoking again within 20 seconds. No doubt there would have been a fire in the engine bay within minutes had I not wiped up the pooled oil from the manifold.

29 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2003 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/09/2007

2003 Escape limited 3. 0 v6 is diagnosed with a cracked exhaust manifold resulting in leaking exhaust gases. Vehicle mileage is 31,200 and has never been off paved roadways. I think this problem has existed for some time but has never been picked up on by regular maintenance visits to the dealership. My dealer explained that the problem is a common one and obviously should have been a recall item as leaking exhaust gases are very dangerous.

32 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2002 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/26/2003

While driving on i294 northbound between 127th street and approximately 103rd street, the engine on our 2002 Ford Escape blew up. There was no warning in terms of warning lights or other indicators that there was any problem. Shortly after entering the interstate, the car began to make a motor boating type of sound. It sounded as if the sun roof was not completely closed. Thereafter the engine blew and pieces began to fly out. A huge fireball, hot enough to melt the license plat holder in the middle of the tailgate was discharged from the tailpipe. The car began smoking and smoke was discharged into the cab of the vehicle. We were able to make an emergency stop on the shoulder of the road. The car continue to smoke and there was oil leaking from the engine. A piece of the crankshaft was found on the shoulder of the road 100-150 feet behind the vehicle. The fireball had been of sufficient size to cause multiple calls to local fire department as well as the state police.
