1 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2017 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 05/09/2020

My son was involved in a serious accident. He hit a stone wall approximately five foot tall at 30-40mph. The only air bag that went off was the steering wheel. His vehicle hit the wall in the same approximate spot that the insurance institute for highway safety test (cent1622) hit the test wall. In their test the side air bag curtains went off. In my sons accident per the videos, related speed and location of impact. The air bag curtains should have gone off which would have saved him from a lifetime disability. Because of the limited space I can not load more pictures or videos of the test vehicles. . Read more...

4 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2001 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 11/11/2013

On November 11, 2013, while my wife was driving a 2001 Ford Escape at night approximately 65 mph on interstate 5 in northern California, the front side airbag on the drivers side (built into the driver's seat backrest) spontaneously deployed, frightening and nearly causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The car had not hit a pot hole or any other object that might explain the deployment of the airbag. The airbag hit the drivers arm, causing red marks that lasted a day, but fortunately no lasting injury. After pulling the car over and finding no other damage (besides the ripped-out side of the backrest with the deflated airbag) that would affect operation of the vehicle, it was driven home approximately 10 miles. The incident has been reported to Ford customer service and, on 11/14, was driven to jim wilson Ford in yreka, CA to try to determine the cause and cost of repair. The dealer said that two or three malfunctions could have caused the airbag to deploy, but they couldn't pin down the cause. Cost of repair is estimated to be $2,043. As of today (11/21/13), the airbag has not been repaired, thinking that more investigation might be proposed for the potentially serious and even deadly defect.

5 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2007 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/30/2013

While driving home from work in heavy traffic, the drivers side air bag deployed, striking me in the face, breaking my eye glasses and completely obstructing my vision with the inflated air bag. I slowed some by guaging my speed by the cars next to me (4 lanes of traffic, 2 each direction). I kept pushing on the air bag with one hand, trying to deflate it quicker, so that I would be able to see in front of me. When I finally got the air bag deflated enough to see out the windshield, I was able to get over into the right hand lane and pull aside. I removed the fuse to the horn as it was shorted out when the air bag deployed and continued on to my home. I contacted Ford motor CO. And they issued a letter requesting a dealer to remove the rcm and send it to them. I have been unable to get a dealer to do this. Ford now wants to do no more. I have researched on the enternet and discovered that there a lot a people who have had the same thing happen to them with this model. I remained calm when mine went off and avoided an accident. If this were to happen to someone who startles easy, this could result in a fatality.

10 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/31/2009

We were staying at a hotel at the inner harbor in baltimore maryland. We pulled into the entry way of the hotel. We got out of vehicle and were going to have it valet parked for the evening. Before the driver could get more than 7 feet from where we were standing the side curtain airbags deployed. The driver did not hit anything, did not jump a curb, or do anything that should have caused the airbags to deploy. We had to have the Escape towed to a dealer in baltimore maryland. The dealer stated that although no damage was noted anywhere on the SUV, Ford would not warranty the repairs as there was some sort of impact data in the computer. We then went through our insurance carrier, they sent out an adjuster. The adjuster for state farm along with 2 Ford mechanics searched the SUV top to bottom, front to back and could not find any reason or visible damage that would cause the airbags to deploy. So state farm is not going to cover the repairs, and upon further conversations with Ford motors, they state that they would not cover the repairs and there was no way to appeal their decision. I am filing a formal complaint with you today as I feel this could have been a catastrophic accident if it were to occur just 10 mins earlier while drive 60 mph on interstate I 95. Please note that the vehicle only has 1128 miles on it at the time of the incident. Should you require additional information, I have written statements from the valet drive at the hotel, a statement from the state farm adjuster stating no damage, pictures showing so damage, the hotline request data the master mechanics sent to Ford with the dtc codes. Thank you in advance for your time.

12 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/02/2009

On June 2nd 2009 I was driving my new Ford Escape on highway 101 heading west when both side airbags instantly deployed. I did not hit anything or get in an accident. The seatbelt locked me into the seat, I pulled off the next exit which was topanga canyon. I drove around the corner to vista Ford and they inspected the vehicle and found nothing wrong with it other than the airbags had deployed. Ford has been shipped the restraint control module and says it will take 3 months to analyze. Ford will not warranty this until they determine it was a defect. In the mean time my insurance is having vista Ford replace the module and airbags. I will get the vehicle back and have to drive it. I consider this vehicle unsafe and do not want to drive it. Unfortunately my job requires me to drive 2500 mile a month all around southern CA. I can not afford to pay for a rental car for 3 months, I've already incurred $650. 00 of rental car expenses since June 2nd so that I can continue working. I am being forced to drive an unsafe car by Ford.

15 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2002 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/26/2007

I have a 2002 Ford Escape with the same problems with the air bag light. The air bag light began blinking then it would stay on. I believe it has to do with the side air bag connectors under the driver seat. I have tried cleaning them with contact cleaner. The light will go off but will come back on sometime later. The light comes on every time I start the engine or just have in the on position. I believe this is a safety issue and should be recalled!!!.
