My 2013 Ford Escape se is having a continuous problem with the airbag light. The airbag warning light will illuminate in the instrument panel and stay on while I am driving. This happens intermittently and is difficult to predict. A vehicle health report state that there is a failure in the overall restraint system that must be fixed immediately. Stoneham Ford and Ford corporate has indicated that they will not address the problem unless the light is actually on while it is in the dealership. I am currently considering legal options right now for breach of warranty.
May 26, 2014 began a Ford recall of "certain models" 2013 Escape for restraint control module defect-it required replacement of the rcm (Ford #14s04, NHTSA #14v237000). I did not receive a notification. Apparently I don't own the "certain model". July 19, 2014 the "air bag system warning light" illuminated and stayed on. July 22 dealership says rcm needs replacement. Is defect not only in the "certain models" claimed in may recall? luckily, altho past the 36,000 mile basic warranty and that it was not included in the may recall for this problem, it is covered by a "restraint warranty". Phew. . . But, they can't find the part anywhere in the country. Ford says maybe they can ship one by early to mid August. My car is unsafe and stays at the dealership until the part is received. Luckily the dealership will provide me a loaner at no charge. Bottom line: really Ford?? seriously?? you recall a problem and involve only certain cars but it is apparently a problem in other. . . Versions of the model? I wish I had read this information before I bought; I would not have bought the Escape. I am petrified the engine stalling, fires etc. Seen numerous times in the complaints on this site will at some point occur. Once repaired I'm trading it. 2013 Escape=10 recalls, 39 service bulletins, 210 complaints. 2013 Nissan rogue= 0 recalls, 8 bulletins, 24 complaints. Honda crv=1 recall, 9 bulletins, 76 complaints. You do the math. Don't judge a book by its cover; the Escape is very stylish but inside hides too many problems from nuisance to safety hazards. Not worth it. Too add to the cartoon, the lift gate handle broke-away from the body at 36,086 miles. Hahaha, cost me $50 to fix (see service bulletin # TSB-14-0012). One day earlier it would have been a warranty repair. What a joke. Thankfully at least I seem to have found a great dealership & service department.
For the past year and a half the abs warning light has been illuminated. I took it to the Ford dealership to have the latest recall fixed regarding the reservoir cap. Ford couldn't get the abs warning light to turn off. . . So, hence the light still intermidantly comes on and off. Also, the oil pressure light keeps coming on when I start my car and when I am slowing down. I just had my mechanic change the oil a week ago and and still having the problem. One last thing, the air bag illumination light has been on for the past two years. I took it to my dealer and they couldn't get it to turn off. Am I safe in thinking that my air bag won't deploy just for the heck of it? not sure what to do? but it scares me.

On 12/20/2013 I had the lower control arms replaced, and had to pay 1,279. 79. In April 2014 you announced a recall for this same item. For some treason you excluded my car. Considering my car required the exact item replaced only 4 months prior, I am requesting to be reimbursed for the cost of that repair. Also a complaint I have is the warning light for the airbag will not go out. A defect that does not seem repairable. In light of the airbag recall I am concerned I am sitting in front of a loaded gun. I will keep this complaint where my family can find it and respond accordingly if something happens to me after you have been notified of this complaint.

The air bag warning light stays on. Took it in to see what the problem was. They said we need to replace the pretensioner and connecters. Very expensive estimate. I did a little research and someone suggested checking under the seat (driver side) for a loose connection. We have been adjusting the seat back and forth because we have a teenager learning to drive. We did check under the seat to make sure there was not a loose connection. Now the air bag light does not stay lit. Not sure if by jiggling some wires to make sure there wasn't a loose connection that we may have solved the problem. Not sure this vehicle is safe to drive.
Airbag warning light repeatedly flashes warning code#47. Lic mech can clean connector contacts and reset computer code but if won't reset, bag(s) may not deploy. Mech advises prob is well known occurrence w/ 1999-2005 Ford Escapes. Codes#46/47 (drivers seat/rt frt passenger seat) appearing as a result of original equipment defective wiring harnesses for airbag/pretensioner seat belt system. Only fix if light stays on and can't be reset is to replace wire harnesses; cost $550+ (must remove seats, pull up carpet to gain access to harness and replace same) . Nhtsa investigated issue in 1999 (action# sq99026 Nov. '99-may. -2000) but closed case with no further action. Internet inquiry indicates large number of complaints about above and also failure of airbag deployment in accidents. Internet indicates issue involves Mazda tributes also as Ford associated with Mazda and uses same harness and system. Ford apparently has a replacement harness to fix problem but owners must pay for part and labor as Ford doesn't acknowledge defective original equipment.
At 2700 miles the airbag warning light started to go on and vehicle was taken to dealer for a check on airbag problem. Supposedly fixed, however one week later had to return vehicle to dealer due to airbag warning light again going on. Problem supposedly fixed by tightening loose wirre cables in cable harness but one month later returned vehicle again as air bag warning was again coming on and there was concern as we didn't know if airbag would deploy if needed or worse may deploy at any time. Advised that cause was excessive electrical resistance in wire cable harness and defective sensors. Since that time there has been no further problem with airbag readiness warning. In fall of 2012 a new problem started which at first I thought might be due to leaving parking brake partially on. Steering at 40 mph all of a sudden became very difficult and center console warning lights and traction warning light came on. After pulling off the road, stopping and restarting the vehicle there was no problem. Problem started again in April 2013 with vehicle still under 10,000 miles. Took vehicle to dealer and problem supposedly fixed. Drove about 6 to 8 miles and problem occurred again with warning lights coming on and difficult to steer at freeway speed. Returned vehicle to dealer and picked up two days later with problem supposedly cured. 4 days later all warning lights went on again and steering as before was difficult. Had vehicle towed to dealer as all agreed it was not safe to drive. After a week of testing and work vehicle was ready . Was advised that problem was loose wires in cable harness and faulty sensors. I have now been driving the vehicle about 2 weeks with no further problems but am greatly concerned that I may have purchased a defective and possibly dangerous vehicle. What protection do we have?.

After driving about 10 miles my airbag warning light came on. On the way back, it again came on after about 10 miles - it flashed a few times and then stayed on. The Ford dealer tested the car and said the warning light was caused by both front pretensioner connectors costing $397. 99. I looked up pretensioner on the internet and saw many complaints specific to 2004 Ford Escapes. There were also solutions such as disconnecting the light, ignoring the light, and rigging the wires under the seat. My concern is that this is a wide spread defect that may lead to lack of safety and highway death. It is an expensive repair that consumers may ignore.
Aug 2007- air bag warning light came on. Dealership found defect in driver/passenger air bag circuit located under front seats (dtc code - d1990/d1994). Replaced connectors & harness($490). Suggested cause was motion of adjusting power seat. Now, oct 2009 (mileage - 85,000) air bag warning light is on again. First flashing, then off for a few days, then solidly on again. Is this circuit located in a place where it shouldn't be? is this why there are complaints about Escape air bags not opening in a crash? can someone check out the location of the wiring for this circuit? is it causing air bag failure in Escapes? do we need deaths? has Ford made changes in the new Escapes?.
Warning lights on dashboard appear intermittently. The lights that come on are the passenger airbag light and the advance traction control. Also the passenger air bag light on the middle of the dashboard flashes off and on. Only happens maybe 20% of the time. Have had it to the dealer twice, the codes that come up they have never seen before so can't diagnose the problem. When I do take it in most of the times the lights don't come on so they ask whets the problem? I don't know if the car is safe to drive or not.
Air bag amber warning light comes on after starting engine (solid light). Most times it will go out when you turn the ignition off and restart. Stays out for several weeks and the problem returns. This is happening for over a year. Several different dealers have confirmed problem but don't have a fix. Is the air bag system functional?.
Air bag warning light lit. Ford dealer had a service bulletin to change wiring harness for $415 wiring for safety equipment should not fail in 4 years.
The contact owns a 2004 Ford Escape. The contact stated that at engine start up,air bag warning light illuminated. On a seperate occassion, the accelerator pedal detached from the vehicle while attempting a turn. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and a private mechanic to diagnose both failures. The dealer confirmed that a computer chip failed and the private mechanic replaced the throttle cable for the detached accelerator pedal. The manufacturer was contacted. The failure mileage was 52,000 and the current mileage was 78,116.
The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape. While driving 15mph, the contact crashed into a parked mobile home and the air bags didn't deploy. There was damage to his vehicle; however, there wasn't any damage to the motor home. The front passenger seat was damaged and destroyed. There were no passengers in the vehicle or injuries. There were no warning lights present before or after the crash occurred. A police report will be available in 10 days. Photos are available. The vehicle is at the repair facility. The VIN and the engine size are not available. The failure and current mileage was 2,100. California traffic collision report. Updated 10/15/07.
Beginning in April 2007, my 2003 Ford Escape XLT (current mileage 118754) experienced an intermittent problem with the air bag warning light. If the power driver's seat had been moved, then the light would appear and flash on the instrument panel for a period of time, then disappear without any action taken. This series of event happened 2-3 times between April - June, 2007. The last time the problem surfaced was June 25, 2007. The light was flashing when I started my vehicle on June 26, 2007. Approximately 5 minutes after starting my vehicle on that date, I was stopped at an intersection when a truck approaching from my left lost its trailer. The trailer crashed into the front driver's side of my vehicle at approximately 60 miles per hour. None of the air bags within my vehicle deployed. My vehicle sustained severe damage to the front end. Although no injuries were sustained as a result of this accident, I believe that an impact of this force into my front bumper should have deployed my front air bags, and that the failure to deploy can be attributed to the faulty sensor on my instrument panel.
On 5/21/2007 while on my way to work the airbag warning light on the intrument cluster began to flash. After a few sequences of flashing the light came on steady. When I arrived at work I called and arranged a time to take the vehicle to a dealership to be repaired. On 5/23/2007 I received a call from the dealershi,p and they informed me it was a bad airbag wiring harness that needed to be replaced, and the cost of parts and labor would be approximately $390. 00. Also, this was the second time I have had a problem with the airbag warning light on this vehicle. The first time approximately 1 year ago, I can get details when I get the vehicle back. I got the same indications , and a dealer made the repair and the explanation was a shorted out twire in the passenger seat sensor. That repair cost was approximately $300. 00. I as wondering if this was a common problem, and if this was a safety related failure am I responsibe to pay for the repair.
