36 Suspension problem of the 2013 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/25/2024

I would like to alert you to a "near miss" situation regarding my 2013 Ford Escape titanium automobile which very nearly resulted in a car rollover while driving at 65 mph on the freeway. My wife was driving our 2013 Escape on the freeway. Suddenly, the left rear lower control arm cross support arm assembly Ford part no. Cv6z*5500*l broke into two pieces. When this happened, the car immediately darted to the right because the left rear tire was no longer pointing straight ahead. Her reaction was to compensate by steering to the left. At that point in time, the car came up on two wheels and very nearly rolled over. After that, the car swerved back and forth until she could stop. It was extremely fortunate that she was in the center lane of a three lane wide freeway when this happened and there were no cars to her immediate right or left. After getting the car stopped she saw that the left rear wheel was clearly pointing in the wrong direction. We had the car towed home and since I generally handle all of my own automotive repairs in my home garage, I jacked the car up and noticed the broken cross support arm assembly. I removed the broken part and examined the failure surfaces. I happen to be a mechanical engineer with 40 years of mechanical design experience and I immediately recognized the classic symptoms of a metal fatigue failure. I have attached a series of photographs documenting the failure. The fracture surface consists of rust along the cracked surface about 2/3 the width of the part and then shinny material where the ultimate failure occurred when the crack propagated across the part on a single load cycle. The vehicle is admittedly 11 years old and it has 177k miles, but it is still in very good condition with very minimal rust. You can see from the photos that the failed part was not the result of rust and other than the fracture surface, the part is generally not rusted. I still have the failed part in my possession.

37 Suspension problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/09/2024

Engine cradle rusted out. It was replaced and I have the old part. Problem was detected using the vehicle for a short drive at residential speed. If the part had failed on the freeway an accident may have occurred. Vehicle was left at a close by shop who confirmed part failure and warned vehicle could not be driven unless part replaced. Shop confirmed this is not uncommon. Called Ford motor company and was told to see my local dealer. Checked with dealer body shop. Body shop said never seen problem before. Parts confirmed common replacement part. Service would neither confirm nor deny quality of original part leading to failure. Concern is for younger drivers for whom this is a family hand me down.

38 Suspension problem of the 2011 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/08/2024

I took my vehicle to chenango Ford to have its nys inspection done. After a few minutes the representative at the Ford dealership came out to tell me that the front subframe had a rusted hole (rusted out) and it would cost me $4800. 00 to repair the vehicle. I was able to drive the vehicle home and have filed a complaint with Ford motor company the representative I spoke with is case number: cxh01949002 patricia johnson phone number: (866)631-3788 extension: 79606 at this time I am left with a well maintained vehicle that is no longer usable due to safety issues caused by I believe faulty engineering and vehicle design. As a disabled person on a limited income I now have lost a major means of transportation.

39 Suspension problem of the 2011 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/02/2024

The contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving 30 mph and attempting to make a left turn, the steering wheel locked, causing the vehicle to drive straightforward towards oncoming traffic. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that she stopped the vehicle and reversed. The contact stated that a road construction worker placed traffic cones around the vehicle to prevent a crash. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the electric power steering (eps) assist motor had failed and needed to be replaced. The mechanic contacted the dealer for the part and was informed that the part was not available. The contact followed up with the dealer, who informed her that the part had been discontinued. Additionally, the contact stated while the vehicle was being towed to the independent mechanic, the front driver's side lower control arm fractured due to severely rusted bolts. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 154,000.

40 Suspension problem of the 2011 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/01/2024

This 2011 Ford Escape has a front k-frame (subframe) failure. The area where the front passenger lower control connects to the k-frame has completely rusted through, causing the lower control arm to almost detach from the vehicle at the front bushing. While driving, the steering wheel suddenly became crooked and the car was taken to a shop for an alignment. Upon inspection it was learned that the k-frame has rusted in that one area so badly that the wheel could become detached if the vehicle is driven any further. I see that Ford has this exact issue with 2001-2004 models and did a recall. However, they are not indicating that they are addressing this same problem with newer models.

41 Suspension problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/23/2024

Both rear shocks, mounts, wheel wells, entire length of body door panels passenger seats are just absolutely rusted beyond repair. I've gone to a couple different shops and each one said that there is nothing they can do to fix the issue. Now the vehicle when ridden in just bounces horribly wearing out bearing springs and tires are being worn out. There is only 110759 miles on it and bought this for my wife/ kids cause I've had 3 other Escapes in the past so since I work on the road this is prefect sized for then not to big or too small. I've had so many issues this last year with repairs parts and now worried about safety issues.

42 Suspension problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/11/2024

The right lower control arm separated from the subframe due to subframe rust. It caused loss of handling and rendered the car immobile. It was caused by a panic stop at a low speed. The car was towed to an independent garage where it is awaiting repair. Parts affected were the subframe, cv axle joint and the front fender (from the wheel hitting it when it broke).

43 Suspension problem of the 2012 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/11/2024

While doing an exhaust inspection on my car, I noticed the front subframe is rusted completely through on the right hand side near the rear lower control are bushing. This is a major structural component of the vehicle and I believe it is a huge safety risk driving it. The car has around 114,000 miles on it. I feel Ford should issue a recall and replace these rusted trough front subframes. I cannot afford to replace it at the cost of $2000 including labor. Please help, thank you.

45 Suspension problem of the 2015 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/21/2024

Driving 2015 Ford Escape slowly in parking lot steering assist fault- service needed' message appeared on screen, and steering seemed to become unpowered. I maneuvered it to park, turned ignition to off. Turned back on and all seems fine on day 2 - (this vehicle does not have replaceable power steering fluid. ) auto parts store helper tested battery, alternator and starter all fine.

46 Suspension problem of the 2019 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/20/2024

I have to replace the rear trailing arm bushings, it is pulling out of the arm. I have 49k in mileage and do not drive off road. I think this was a bad part when built or installed incorrectly for this to happen. I am 62 years old never have I had never had to repair anything like this before on any of my vehicles. I took my car in for a oil change at Ford ciocca in flemington and was told I need back brakes rotor and rear trailing arm. I replaced the brakes and rotor and they had to order the part for this bushing 833 dollar for part.

47 Suspension problem of the 2020 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/28/2023

Bought new, June 2021, both rear shocks leaking. Replaced with same type. Now 12/28/23 63,800 miles, both rear shocks leaking again. Can only replace with same part.

48 Suspension problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/15/2023

Driving at 40mph the front right wheel collapsed due to the sub frame failure (rusted out and separated}. I understand that Ford did not treat the frame member for rust properly causing catastrophic failure. Fortunately it did not cause an accident or personal injury. Talking to my mechanic he said it is a common problem in 2004-2012 Ford Escapes, Mercury mariners, and masda tributes.

49 Suspension problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/30/2023

I had exhaust work done, 2010 Ford Escape, and shop pointed out huge rust hole in ''subframe'' (engine cradle) this has been hundred thousand recalls but not all model years, yet they all have the same fault. Ford recall only puts a cheap ''brace'' on it but it is not a repair!! what kind of country allows these maggots to threaten the driver with complete !! loss of steering control and yet not require repair for faulty frames? they did the half-ass repair on 2001 to 2004 but all years up to 2012 have this, and the ''brace '' in cheapo b s.

50 Suspension problem of the 2011 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/20/2023

Front sub frame rusting through that could potentially result in the control arms breaking away from the sub frame and the driver losing control of the vehicle. No incident has occurred from this, but could if not inspected and found. This was found by an independent service center. No warning lamps.

51 Suspension problem of the 2011 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/17/2023

Sub frame rotting out, lower control arms. Know issue with a/c leaking onto frame cause extreme rust. This can/will cause loss of control when driving. Purchased used and was not made aware of the issue and unknown history.

52 Suspension problem of the 2011 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/13/2023

The power steering went out on us several times, but this last time, I was almost in a accident. Also, it has a rubbing/ grinding sound in the front with a shimmy and no matter what,it won't quit.

53 Suspension problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/01/2023

I have a constant issue with the power steering. This issue makes it hard for my vehicle to turn properly as well as when you go to turn a corner you have to be a body builder to get the car to even turn. At times I can't even drive my car because it gets so bad. Along with this issue I also have a wheel bearing issue in the front suspension. To me this issue feels like my whole car is going to rattle apart while I am driving it. To add to it, the propulsion system, it has a constant whine, tries to stall, and sometimes it will not get up to speed nor gain speed. There has been times when I am driving my car that I have to pull over to the side of the road very carefully because I feel like my car is going to die and then when I turn it off and then back on it acts like it has absolutely no power. I haven't gone anywhere to get my vehicle checked yet. But I have done extensive research on the issues that I am having with my vehicle and the three main issues are a recall for same year and same year make and model.

55 Suspension problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/04/2023

Was informed during inspection the subframe is rusted very badly and could fail. In doing research the 2009 Ford Escape has had these recalled for this specific reason that the subframe components were not properly coated causing rust and failure. My VIN isn't on the list after speaking to Ford. My next step is to address you to see if it needed to get added as it is exact nature of the original 2006 subframe recall that mine is not a part of yet needs to be.

56 Suspension problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/01/2023

A/c drain line located above the crossmember(engine cradle-#9l8z-5c145-a) caused it to prematurely rot on the passenger side of the vehicle. Issue was discovered during a routine oil change. Crossmember rot is directly above lower control arm attachment point. In the event of total failure, it would result in loss of control of the vehicle. The driver's side of the crossmember does not have any signs of corrosion.

57 Suspension problem of the 2011 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/28/2023

Subframe rusted only on passenger side front where the weld is to hold/ support the passenger front wheel. It snapped and wheel was completely free/ had no control over it and causing the front axle to snap.

58 Suspension problem of the 2021 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/02/2023

I was driving and turned right and the issue started. Pulled over to a safe place and notice d rear wheel bracket was broken. Towed to dealer. The dealer insisted I hit something I did not. The car has less than 8600 miles. I could not believe this was not covered under warranty. In addition, the fuel injection recall there are no parts available and waiting list. I am trading the car in as this is the second time the car has broken down on the roadside. I no longer feel safe in the vehicle.

59 Suspension problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/01/2023

Hello, the engine cradle subframe on my 2005 Ford Escape has completely rusted through on the right hand side where it attaches to the steering control arm. As I was driving the subframe broke which made it impossible to steer the car. This pulled my car off the road to the passenger side. Fortunately I was not injured. Having now researched this issue, it is a common problem with 2005 Ford Escapes. This is very dangerous, and it should be addressed as it creates a life threatening situation.

61 Suspension problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 05/29/2023

This 2006 Ford Escape hybrid, and all first and second generation (2001-2012) Escape models, were designed and built with a significant, known defect in the mating area and materials used for the rear floor pan, rear sub-assembly/rails, and rear inner fender liners/upper shock absorber mounts, all made of pressed steel. The design of the components renders them subject to trapping road debris/salt/contaminants, and the inferior steel used oxidizes quickly, resulting in perforated areas of substantial rust. In our 2006 model, the right rear inner fender liner was completely replaced, and the rear subassembly/rails were welded, in 2013 with new Ford parts. By may, 2018, it had to be repaired and welded again. As of may, 2013, five years almost to the day, it has again rusted and separated. As this hybrid Escape carries a 600 pound battery between the rails in the rear of the vehicle, this is a substantial, dangerous defect affecting potentially millions of cars manufactured over a decade. The current status of the oxidation, corrosion, rot and decay affecting our Ford Escape has rendered it incapable of being repaired per the auto mechanic shop we visited first, followed by the body shop we visited next. Both indicated that the poor design combined with the steel used contributed to the dangerous vehicle it has become.

62 Suspension problem of the 2020 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 05/22/2023

I bought the car in February, 2021. 11 months later the rear shocks had both failed and were replaced by dealer on 01/13/2022, at 9572 miles. One year later the shocks have again failed! Ford has refused to cover them under warranty, claiming that shock failure in one year is normal wear. This is a severe safety issue that affects vehicle handling and it needs to be addressed.

63 Suspension problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 05/04/2023

Had an alternator problem , had vehicle towed to garage for repair. When I picked the owner of the garage there is significant rust to the suspension. I inspected the damage my self and found the "suspension part" that holds the strut was just about rusted through. I researched the web and found out that there were plenty of others who have the same.

The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 20,000.

65 Suspension problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/01/2023

My rear passenger side rusted right out completely and the strut mount is not attached to any part of the body. It caused my vehicle to swirve off the road almost hitting another vehicle when it was raining out also in the snow this occurred several times where my rear end jerked sideways pulling my truck into a complete circle.

The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact called an independent mechanic and was informed that the rear shocks should not be leaking at the age of the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 41,513.

67 Suspension problem of the 2014 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/24/2023

I've been having rear suspension issues, due to the fact I just had to replace my rear shocks on my 2014 Ford Escape titanium. I recently got my rear shocks replaced through goodyear in bartow, FL. About 2-3 weeks ago & had to return to goodyear again 3 different times in this month of February of 2023 to tighten up the rear passenger side. I'm told by mechanic techs at goodyear that it appears I might be having "control bar" issues on this 2014 model & it being not the rear shocks after all. But I'm having to replace the front end with new struts as well. I feel it is neccessary to let anyone having the same issue with the suspension on my 2014 Ford Escape needs to investigate this!.

68 Suspension problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/12/2023

Power steering completely out of my car, making turning in any direction difficult. Causing safety concerns as it has already caused exterior cosmetic damage while turning into the driveway and not being able to turn in as quickly as I was needing to get out of the traffic cause me to scrape approx. 12- 16inch onto my driver's /left sidebumper/fender. I have also felt loss of power, or a struggle to accelerate. Conditions are worsening as time goes by. As if my transmission is slipping. Power steering assist light has turned on. It may have also resulted in poor alignment causing even more damage to tires and suspension. I took to the local Ford dealership to check, as there are 100,000 recalls for the exact issues on vehicles with the same year make and model as mine, according to my VIN number, my vehicle was not included in these recalls. I was forced to pay nearly 100. 00 out of pocket for these test to be ran. The test shows many faults including confirmation of power steering assist at fault and failing torque. Not only has this cause a domino effect of concerns with my vehicles safety, it has caused many outburst of emotional distress as it is hard for me to continue to drive my vehicle.

69 Suspension problem of the 2006 Ford Escape
