I have a 2003 Ford Expedition and I have the automatic mirrors that rotate in and down when the vehicle is put into reverse. When I purchased the vehicle, the right mirror would continue to move in and down when the vehicle was put into reverse. When the vehicle was placed in drive the mirror was suppose to go back to the pre-sert position but it would not. The problem was fixed when I picked up the vehicle. About a year later the same problem recurred and the dealer replaced both lt and rt mirror motors. Now the problem has recurred again with little difference. Now when I unlock the doors with the remote both the left and right side mirrors rotate in and down as if the vehicle is in reverse but that is even before the doors ar open. When the vehicle is started neither mirror will go back to the pre-set positions. So now before I can drive the vehicle I have to adjust each mirror. This problem happens each time the vehicle is unlocked with the remote. If I use the key to unlock the left door the mirrors stay at the pre-set position until I place the vehicle in reverse but the mirrors will not move back to the pre-set position after going to the drive position. With the mirrors in the automatic reverse position, neither will go back to the pre-set position. After turning off the automatic reverse on the message center computer, both mirrors will still drive to the in and down position when the vehicle is unlocked and both have to be set again before driving.

: the contact stated the silver was coming off of the exterior mirrors. The dealership determined the mirrors needed to be replaced.
: the contact stated the passenger side mirror no longer has a reflective coat. The vehicle has not been seen by the dealership.
The contact owns a 1999 Ford Expedition. The rear view mirrors on the passenger and driver doors have deteriorated. The contact has poor visibility when driving in oncoming and incoming traffic. He has not yet notified the manufacturer to report the defect. He took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that he would need to notify the manufacturer. The current mileage was 79,000 and the failure mileage was unknown.
Outside mirrors on both sides of auto have shown lines in the mirrors and they show up in sunlight and when in traffic at night. They cause you to lose some vision. I noticed this condition for some time but the dealers told me this was normal. This auto has only 500 miles now but this started back in 2000. I just went in for service 3/17/05 at Ford and they said its up to me to pay for replacement. I feel that this is a safety issue. Please let me know if this is common on Ford SUV. Thank you r vusich.

Both outside mirrors separated from the outside, making visual contact very poor. Owner took the vehicle to the dealership but was informed that because the vehicle is out of warranty, there was nothing else they could do. Sideview mirrord were delaminating, causing poor visibility. Side mirrors are delaminating causing poor visability.
The silver backing was peel off the mirrors. The consumer was told that the mirrors were not covered under the vehicle's warranty.
I recently purchased a used 1999 Ford Expedition and have found that the signal mirrors are defective. The adhesive that Ford used on the back side of the mirror glass is eating away the silver reflective surface. I first noticed this problem on our test drive and can tell you that with the right angle of the sun hitting those mirrors ,you cannot see out of them. Ford offered to replace them for about $180. 00ea. Plus $30. 00 to install. I feel that Ford should be forced to correct this defect and not the consumer before someone is injured or killed in an accident. Thanks for listening, rick.
Moisture got behind the glass of the exterior 'rear view mirrors'; rear view mirrors and delaminated the glass. This reduced visibility, especially when driving at night. The dealership was contacted.
Mirror glass broke . The internal backing on both rear view mirrors is peeling and cracking from the glass and causing poor visibility.

Vehicle: 1999 Ford Expedition. Roblem nearly caused serious accident: loss of reflective surface (silver) on both exterior rear-view mirrors. This vehicle purchased in Aug 1999 has defective safety equipment. The rear view mirrors are losing the reflective surfaces, developing cracjs in the silver backing and are becoming unsafe. The vehicle has not experienced any unusal environmental exposure, in fact unlike my other cars (all older than 1999) the Ford Expedition has been garage-kept. While the local Ford dealer indicated my experience was unique, I would be quite surprised if this condition is not affecting other vehicles of this type and wished to file a formal submission on the problem with you. Thank you. Charles mcbrearty.
Driver side signal mirror's reflective surface has deteriorated - developing dark spots due to chrome plating delamination. Ford doesn't want to fix it - however, this presents a significant safety issue. Mirrors are not wearable items like brake pads. Having a mirrors surface deteriorate on it's own is a manufacturing/design failure. Ford has noted this problem in their technical service bulletin list (noted below) so they are aware of the problem, yet refuse to replace the mirror - instead wanting to charge $310 for the part + installation. Mirrors are a safety device, especially in a large vehicle like the the Ford Expedition - using defective parts - acknowledging said parts and than refusing to replace them is inexcusable. This exact problem is noted by Ford via a TSB - text of TSB below: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- make : Ford model : Expedition year : 1999 service bulletin num : 00189 date of bulletin: Sep 04, 2000 NHTSA item number: 618602 component: visibility:rearview mirrors/devices summary: concerns with the signal mirror reflective surface deteriorating over time, developing dark spots due to chrome plating delamination.
The reflective material on the side view mirrors faded and caused poor visibility. Dealer was notified, but did not resolve the problem. Five months after the vehicle was purchased (7-99)the mirror was replaced. In 2003 the mirrors were replaced again. This time the vehicle was out of warranty therefore the consumer had to pay to have them replaced.
Both exterior mirrors are discolored and deteriorating, images are badly distorded. Poor visibility. I have the extended warranty, which they say does not cover it. Owners respondsibility.
When ever I unlock my 2003 Ford Expedition with the key ring clicker, the exterior side mirror erratically adjust itself to an unknown position. This occurs frequently and is a huge inconvenience for me because I have to always readjust the mirrors.
The side view mirrors on the vehicle are becoming unusable. The reflective backing on the mirrors are slowly turning a mottled black for some reason. Also , rear windshield wiper motor wore out.
Exterior mirrors both driver and passenger are turning black and nearly impossible to see out of.
The lamination on both exterior mirrors is turning black. This condition has been progressively getting worse in the last few weeks. Consumer can barely see anything through these mirrors.
The side mirrors erratically repositioned themselves each time the doors were unlocked or if the vehicle was put into reverse. Also, the reverse sensor did not work properly.
According to dealership and manufacturer reps, the problem with the side mirrors and their propensity to move without warning or "pop" when using the vehicles' reverse mirror function, is due to poor design from Ford motor company. I have been told that I am just too tall (6'3"), and that the location that I have the mirrors adjusted in, causes the housing to make contact with the tilting assembly! I find it hard to believe that Ford would produce a vehicle that will not allow you to adjust the mirros properly so that you can see traffic behind you, and still be able to use a function that was designed into the vehicle! the mirros modules have been replaced twice on both sides as well as the motors. I have filed a complaint with Ford and have been told that due to the design flaw, the vehicle is as it was designed and they have no intent to repair. Good luck seeing traffic on either side.
I have a 2003 Ford Expedition with a leaking windshield/moon roof. I have taken it to maroone Ford in delray beach florida 3 times and each time they kept it for 2 days and performed water sprinkler tests. Then claimed to have repaired it. I just got it back again on Aug. 7, 2003 and am waiting for the next big rain. The dealer does not seem to know why this is happening. I also have the possessed side mirror problem. They just do their own thing when I reverse then drive. This is another issue the dealer has yet to figure out. Fortunately, florida has a lemon law and I plan to exercise it as soon as the next leak appears. You would think that a person would not have to worry about such significant problems when paying a high price for a vehicle or at least be able to get the problem fixed the first time.
Exterior mirrors shake while driving. One mirror has already been replaced by the dealer, but it still shakes. It is virtually impossible to get a clear view of traffic behind you. This poses a very dangerous situation. Dealer said "they are all like that, even on the brand new vehicles". Sounds like Ford needs to find a supplier with a better quality product before these mirrors cause an accident - whether with my vehicle or someone else's.
Exterior mirrors both driver and passenger are turning black and nearly impossible to see out of.
The side mirrors moved at their own free will while driving . The reverse sensor did not work properly. The mirrors moved in reverse not up and down. Which made it difficult to see when driving.
Both side view mirrors are faded so badly that you can't see. Almost involved in a major accident with pregnant wife and 3 kids on board.
The exterior rear view mirrors are blackened. I suspect the electric directional signal within is the culprit. The mirrors are useless. I am sure that Ford is aware that this is a pervasive problem, yet they refuse to fix it at their expense, even though it is a safety hazard due to poor manufacturing. I purchased new mirrors which were obviously redesigned at a cost of nearly $400. 00.
Sideview mirrors fail to return to their 'upright' position after reversing.
The right outside mirror material is flaking off making it nearly impossible to see down this side of the vehicle. After doing some research, I have found out that hundreds of people have complained to Ford about the defective mirror and Ford refuses to fix the quality problem. Additionally, the wipers, come on an off for no apparent reason. In speaking with the dealer about both of these problems, they indicate Ford will not remedy this situation even though many have complained.
Both exterior mirrors had hair line cracks. This caused poor visibility. The dealer was notified. The cracks were also black in color.
Over the past year or so, both my mirrors have been turning black and cracking on the inside, mwhere I cannot see out them, they are almost black without any viewing area.
I have a 2003 Ford Expedition which won't retain the correct setting in the passenger's side rear view mirror. I had the driver's side mirror fixed already, but the dealer refuses to fix the passenger's side due to inability to verify the complaint. It seems to be an intermittent problem, but often when I go to change lanes the mirror is not set to the correct position, presenting a definite safety hazard. I feel they should go ahead and replace the mirror since I'm having the problem, whether they can diagnose the problem or not.
