Exterior Rearview Mirror Problems of Ford Expedition - part 2

I purchased my 2003 Ford Expedition back in September 2002. In less than a month the automatic adjusting side view mirrors on the driver and passenger started malfunctioning. I took it to the dealer for repair but to no avail. I was informed that it would be March 2003 before a replacement part or fix could be made. I have been driving around with this potentially dangerous hazard, not knowing if my mirrors will take it upon itself to start adjusting without warning because of a defect that the dealers repair shop or Ford can not explain. I was promised that this problem would be fixed in March 2003. I was called by palmetto Ford here in charleston SC. On February 28, 2003 and informed that there was parts in to fix my mirrors. Upon dropping my vehicle off for repair I was called about mid-day and advised that the whole drivers side mirrors needed replacing and that it would be best to leave the car over night so that they could expedite the process when the mirror came in. After picking my vehicle up after the repairs were made I had to take it back to the repair facility with the same problem of the mirrors going hay wire. I really feel that this needs to be addressed at a higher level. At this point I believe that I am getting the run around. Too many months have gone by without a solution to this accident waiting to happen. I am real concerned about the overall safety of my family while driving a vehicle that could leave you in a dangerous situation when you think your side view mirrors are in one position while driving and then when you go to look to change lanes abruptly etc. They are totally out of alignment pointing up to the sky. The side mirrors on my 1999 Ford Expedition are deteriorated to the point of not being able to see other vehicles through them. This is a manufacturing problem from Ford and should be addressed before this causes a serious accident. I must try to find a way to fix this problem now before it becomes my accident. Does any one have a remedy ?.

Side-view mirrors on driver and passenger side have delamination resulting in loss of complete effectiveness of viewing. I took the vehicle to the dealer while the vehicle was under warranty, but they did not replace the mirror citing that the mirror had not reached the replacement stage, now that the vehicle is out of warranty, the mirrors have reached a point that it is difficult at best to see out of them. My cost to replace is 230 per mirror, with no consideration of warranty extension.

When driving, the vehicle's side mirror would readjust itself upward.

The side view mirrors lose their mirror coating. The mirror image is therefore dim and a potential safety hazard. A good mirror can't be found in a salvage yard because "that happens to all Ford Expeditions".

Both mirrors were smoking. Dealer notified.

The outside mirrors on my 1999 Ford Expedition are turning black from the inside. The right mirror is almost totally unusable due to the discoloration. The left mirror is almost to that point and is becoming worse each day. I have been to two separate dealerships and while they agree that they have seen other Expeditions with the same problem, Ford does not have a recall for this. I contacted Ford and they said they will not replace them since there is no current recall. The cost for replacing both mirrors is in excess of $600. Even though the vehicle is no longer in warranty, mirrors are something that should last longer than 4-5 years. This is definitely a safety hazard and should be addressed by Ford. The condition started occurring in the fall of 2002 when the vehicle had approximately 75,000 miles on the odometer. Since that time, the mirrors have gotten progressively worse.

Side-view mirrors on driver and passenger side have become very dulled resulting in loss of complete effectiveness of viewing. It appears that something has caused the silver in the mirrors to disintegrate. This is a 1999 Ford Expedition. I have contacted Ford and the local dealer and neither would offer to remedy at their expense since the warranty period had expired.

The mirror coating on the back of the side mirrors on my Ford Expedition is coming off & has been since just after the warranty ran out. It makes using the mirrors questionable at best. It looks like the mirror was sandblasted from behind.

Since about 2002 the reflective material on both rear view mirrors has alot of cracking. Unable to view clearly. This to me is a big safety issue. Cost from for Ford to replace was $500. 00 each side.

1999 Ford Expedition. Both exterior mirrors (with integrated red turn signal chevron) delaminated lost reflective coating on back of mirror. Have contacted Ford dealer on two occasions, and contacted Ford consumer services. Ford acknowledges several service bulletins on the issue but would not tell me what it contained. The vehicle had 55,000 miles and now has 65,000 miles. Quoted $169 per mirror to replace mirror glass or $400 per mirror for complete replacement. The mirror was manufactured by muth and I contacted them. They acknowledged a manufacturing defect and had a upgrade kit to provide new mirrors glass for $216 delivered to my door. I paid a body shop $65 for repairs. I am happy with the results. This is a safety issue like seat belts, air bags, etc. I will ship the old mirrors to you at my expense for your investigation.

Both exterior mirrors are distorted and cause severe visibility problems. Dealer and manufacturer have been notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

Consumer states that both passenger and drivers side rear view windows over time become scratched and spiedery looking. Consumer can hardly see the road. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide any further information. Ts.

Both exterior mirrors are severely faded and consumer was unable to see properly. Dealer was not notified at this time. Feel free to provide any further information.

From both rear view mirrors reflection is coming off, leaving mirrors black. Unable to see out off them. Dealer contacted.

Both exterior mirrors are not usable. These are replacements the first set failed after a year and a half. It seems that the mirrors designed for my model Expedition have a maximum two year life. Ford says no defect, come take a look at my second set of mirrors on a four year old vehicle.

The side view mirror has deteriorated to the point there is no reflective material left. I am unable to use the mirror, causing a safety issue. Ford dealer will not replace/repair as car is out of warranty. Technical service bulletin issued. Will cost $300 to $400 to have fixed.

I own a '99 Ford Expedition-both of the side mirrors have deteriorated to the point I can barely see out of them during the daytime, and its impossible to see out of them at night. I went back to the Ford dealership and was informed they can't do anything about mirrors deteriorating and to replace both will be 498. 00 a piece plus taxes. I have extended coverage, which state they won't pay for replacement ,due to mirrors being considered glass. Service dept at the Ford dealership said that mirrors are not glass and that it's actually reflexor paper or something. I would appreciate if you could look into matter. I have done some research and have found the deterioration of side mirrors on Ford Expeditions to be a well documented service problem under the website of recalls. This is my 2nd time trying to get Ford to work with me on this matter.

Rearview mirrors on passenger's and driver's sides are deteriorating. Consumer can't see out of mirrors. Contacted dealer, and dealer stated that mirrors were defective. But, consumer's warranty expired.

On outside mirror reflection material is coming off, obstructing driver's vision. The manufacturer has redesigned the mirrors 3 times.

I would like to file a complaint about the rearview mirrors on my 1999 eddie bauer Expedition. I noticed before my warranty ran out that they began to show black spots. The maintance department at my local Ford dealership brushed it off as no big deal. After my warranty ran out, I again told the maintance department that the mirrors were worsening. Now after a few years have passed, and speaking to other owners of that specific model, the mirrors are unuseable. I feel that the mirrors are a defect of the manufactorers and think they should be the one to replace them. I have been quoted a price of $400. / mirror for replacement on my part. Please investigate this matter and respond to me.

Both exterior mirrors are becoming distorted in certain lights which reflect. Dealer contacted and no recall established. Problem still exists. Provide further information.

Both door rearview mirrors had to be replaced under warranty due to backing peeling off, making mirrors useless. At this time, backing was peeling again. Consumer felt he should not have to have these mirrors replaced every 2 years.

When moving in reverse the side mirrors flip down or up. No one has identified the cause of the problem.

Exterior rearview mirrors that have turn signals flash inside of them are starting to deteriorate, making visibility difficult.

Driver's side and passenger's side rearview mirrors are corroding, which makes it difficult for night driving. Please provide any furhter information.

Reflective part of the mirror is deteriorating from the inside. Dealer says mirror has to be replaced.

Side view mirrors vibrate so badly that you cannot see anything in them. Everythung is a blur. The problem is worse the faster you go. At highway speeds of 60-65 mph it is the worst. The problem has existed since the vehicle was new (oct. '98). Replacement of the mirrors by the dealer has not helped. The dealer says that it is a problem that has been brought to their attention by other Expedition owners, but that Ford motor has no solution to fix the problem. This causes a safety concern as the driver has to turn to look out the windows to see if there is a vehicle as the mirrors are rendered useless. Upon contacting Ford motor CO. Of my concerns (1-800-392-3673), I was informed that engineering would be contacted and that I would have to keep in contact with the dealer for any information as Ford would not contact me. I asked when this would be and was informed that no date could be given. I also asked for this information in writing and was informed that this was not possible.

The side view mirrors on both sides are turning black. Consumer can barely see out of them. A technical advisement was issued, #00-18-09, by Ford in reference to delamination of signal mirrors.
