36 Power Train problem of the 2020 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/27/2026

While merging on to highway vehicle made loud clunk, transmission slipped and vehicle went into fail safe mode(limp mode). Vehicle would not accelerate when pushing on gas pedal for 8 seconds. Tractor trailer truck behind us slammed on its brakes as well as 3 other vehicles due to tractor trailer truck swerving in lanes to stop. Was almost rear ended by tractor trailer truck. Vehicle has TSB’s on 10 speed 10r80 transmissions but no recalls. Vehicle does not throw code so vehicle can not be assessed or repaired according to dealership and Ford motor company. This is a huge fatality risk and safety issue regarding multiple claims of the 10r80 transmissions in the newer Ford Expeditions.

37 Power Train problem of the 2021 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/26/2026

When attempting to pass or slowing and then pressing the gas regain speed, transmission disengages, engines revs, transmission down shifts to 1st gear and then attempting to "find" the correct gear. This has happened multiple times and a few of those times has left us susceptible to being struck by another vehicle due to no engine power to the power train to move the vehicle.

38 Power Train problem of the 2021 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/23/2026

The 10r80 transmission of this vehicle failed resulting in erratic shifting, slowing and stopping of the vehicle in traffic, having to pull over in the middle of traffic. Rapid acceleration and deceleration resulting in jolting the people in the vehicle and abrupt speed changes. This has been confirmed by a private mechanic and a rebuilt transmission purchased from local Ford dealership. The broken transmission will be returned to Ford as the core is required to be returned for deposit refund. There were no warning lights or indications of failure other than shifting issues.

39 Power Train problem of the 2018 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/20/2026

The cdf drum is starting to fail and it will shift from a low gear to a high gear at certain speeds. It’s definitely not safe and is extremely expensive to repair.

40 Power Train problem of the 2018 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/20/2026

"verified internal hydraulic cross leak due to cdf drum bushing movement. Transmission has delayed engagement in 4th, 5th, and 6th gears. This is a known manufacturing defect in the 10r80 transmission. ".

41 Power Train problem of the 2016 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/17/2026

My Expedition started stuttering and the speedometer, started fluctuating speeds which would also cause my cruise control to turn off. Then the speedometer quit working altogether and so did the odometer. If I turned the truck off and restarted it, it would reset everything for a few miles then it would start all over again. I went to the Ford dealership and got it fixed. It cost $2500. Later doing research, I discovered this is a problem with this transmission and can be very dangerous as the truck can downshift dramatically which our did once. If I’ve been on ice or pulling my trailer, it could’ve been catastrophic. I feel like this should be a recall. I also feel like Ford should have to pay for this.

42 Power Train problem of the 2021 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/16/2026

Most mornings when I shift the vehicle from park to drive the transmission slams into gear and it feels like the vehicle just hit a wall. Also when shifting from 4th through 8th gear the transmission shudders through the shift sequence and sometimes it completely cuts out, total loss of power and have to coast to a stop on the side of the highway. This happens all the time.

43 Power Train problem of the 2021 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/16/2026

The cdf drum in the 10r80 transmission in 2021 Ford Expedition has failed causing inability to accelerate or decrease speech reliably. For safety during interstate driving, there is a indisputable need for quick and reliable increases and decreases in speed. Being able to clear an intersection quickly is important not only for the driver's safety but the safety of others in an intersection. Dealership has confirmed the problem. Ford released a TSB that has been around since 2023 regarding how this part fails and needs to be repaired. There were no warning lights or messages about the problem. The vehicle was purchased used at only 60,000 miles and dealership made no indication that transmissions had been an issue and could be a safety issue going forward.

44 Power Train problem of the 2010 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/16/2026

The transmission is malfunctioning. The shifting in the gears has become rough with kick or clunk feeling. This happens when increasing speed and decreasing speed. The transmission has even gotten stuck in 2nd, and 4th gears. Our safety was at risk because when the gears were stuck the vehicle would not increase in speed, in the flow if traffic. The transmission has been inspected by 3 transmission mechanic shops, and has been confirmed by all 3. There have not been warning signs or lights on the dashboard to alert us of the problem. This appears to be random and out of the blue. The truck is available for inspection upon request.

45 Power Train problem of the 2019 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/13/2026

Torch converter was changed 1 1/2 years ago and now the cdf drum is going out, causing hard shifting and skipping shifts. This dangerous as the primary family driver to transport our children and the pause in shifting attempting to merge on the interstate is very dangerous and could ultimately lead to death if there is oncoming and if shifts hard or pauses with shifting when merging.

47 Power Train problem of the 2019 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/02/2026

My transmission feels as if it is skipping. It feels as if the truck is going to stop while driving. Making it very dangerous and unsafe for my children and myself. The two codes that a scanner gave were p0732:00-6d and p07f7:00-6d. Please help with this. My truck is not even that old nor is high on mileage. Thank you.

48 Power Train problem of the 2022 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/24/2026

Transmission has known issue by Ford motor company concerning defective components leading to wear and improper function causing potential safety issues with acceleration and deceleration. My vehicle, I purchased used with 32k miles in April of 2025. I started to have issues with shifting approximately 6 months ago when it would shift erratically when cold and when vehicle was not warmed up. On several occasions the vehicle, when shifted into reverse to back out of a parking space, the vehicle hesitates and drops harshly into reverse. This has occurred at least 4 times within the last 3 months. The next issue is when the vehicle is initially started up in the morning and placed into gear to leave my driveway I pull out and it appears to be operating fine. When the transmission goes to upshift it will shift on the gauge screen indicating it is in 3rd gear but either I have no gear and the engine will rev without acceleration, or as in the last circumstance, it will shift to 3rd, jump to 8th gear, and have no accelerator input for approximately 5-10 seconds. The shift indicator shows the transmission then shifts from 8th, to 5th, then down to 3rd and drops harshly into gear and proceeds operation as normal. The transmission will not shift as smoothly as it does when it is warm for approximately 3-5 miles. This type of operation has been identified as being contributed to the interior components of the 10r80 transmission. In particular, the cdf clutch is identified in the TSB for this issue 23-2250. I have had my vehicle at the Ford dealer on 2 occasions for this issue and they have not been able to replicate the issue. I was advised the 2nd time that the service technician stated the transmission was low 2 quarts of fluid and they were unable to get the transmission to replicate the harsh shifting condition. This vehicle was serviced less than 2 months prior and no indication of low fluid was noted in the transmission at the time of service.

49 Power Train problem of the 2012 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/23/2026

While exiting the freeway at approximately 45 to 50 mph, the transmission downshifted to 1st gear locking up the tires.

50 Power Train problem of the 2018 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/18/2026

The vehicle often feels like it is slipping when it is changing gears at lower speeds. When trying to accelerate quickly getting on the highway, it fails to increase speed. The gas pedal is pressed and the engine revs and it does not increase speed. This has happened more than once and has caused me to nearly be in accidents because I cannot enter the highway as I should. I took it to a dealer initially in 2023 and they repaired the transmission cooler. Was told it was operating as designed after that. Then in 2024 I took it in for the same issue and was told I needed an engine replacement. I paid for an entire engine replacement and was told the issue was fixed. I am now having the same issue and will be taking it back for a 3rd time. My local shop (not the dealer) told me it is the timing belt which is part of the engine. I feel unsafe in my vehicle and do not feel my $16,000 repair fixed the problem.

51 Power Train problem of the 2018 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/16/2026

While driving at approximately 55 mph, the vehicle intermittently loses throttle response. Pressing the accelerator results in no increase in rpm or vehicle speed, even when the pedal is fully depressed. After 3–5 seconds, power suddenly returns. The issue consistently occurs after the vehicle has been driven for about 20 minutes and is at normal operating temperature. During some events, a “powertrain malfunction / reduced power” warning with a wrench indicator appears. The vehicle is equipped with the 10r80 10-speed automatic transmission. The failure occurs during steady highway cruising and creates a serious safety concern, as the vehicle will not accelerate when needed for merging or passing. A buzzing noise is heard during the loss of power, and engine rpm remains steady with no response to throttle input. This intermittent loss of power at highway speeds presents a significant safety risk.

52 Power Train problem of the 2020 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/16/2026

While driving my 2020 Ford Expedition at approximately 50-60 mph, the vehicle experienced a sudden, unintended downshift without driver input. The dashboard gear indicator abruptly dropped to "1st gear. " this caused rapid deceleration and a mechanical "chattering/popcorn" noise as the transmission struggled to find a gear. The loss of power in traffic created an immediate safety hazard and risk of a rear-end collision. A certified Ford dealership (river view Ford - oswego, IL) has diagnosed this as an internal transmission failure.

53 Power Train problem of the 2020 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/15/2026

The 10-speed automatic transmission has harsh/ erratic shifting, clunking, hesitation and power loss. We were turning on to a 4-lane highway. The Expedition lost power and would not go. A vehicle almost ran into the back of the Expedition. When we tried to accelerate the transmission made a clunking/ grinding sound and finally went into a gear. Yes, the problem has been reproduced by the Ford dealership. It is scheduled to be inspected this week. There were no warning lamps or messages or other symptoms of the problem. The problem started a week ago.

54 Power Train problem of the 2013 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/12/2026

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at 25 mph, there was a sudden unattended downshift of the vehicle. The speedometer went to zero. The rpm increased without acceleration. No warning lights were illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was unknown.

55 Power Train problem of the 2017 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/07/2026

I am reporting a severe, systemic manufacturing defect in the 3. 5l ecoboost engine timing system (cam phasers and timing chain) of my 2017 Ford Expedition that poses an immediate highway safety hazard. Approximately February 2026 upon start up heard odd rattle type noise, a week later heard noise again thought maybe due to recent Ford dealership changing engine belts. Searched websites discovered notable issues regarding serious known manufacturing defect, cam phasers, timing chain, water pump. Followed Ford recommendation to change oil well before normal schedule to address. At approximately 54,550 miles, the vehicle began exhibiting continuous mechanical rattling and timing instability upon startup, a condition heavily documented across Ford’s truck/SUV platform and acknowledged internally via Ford technical service bulletin TSB 23-2143. The 3. 5l ecoboost is a high-compression interference engine. A failure or skipped tooth of the timing chain or cam phaser system while operating at high speeds causes instantaneous, catastrophic engine failure. This results in an immediate stall and a complete loss of vacuum-assisted power braking and power steering. This vehicle is routinely operated on major texas highway corridors (xxx) at posted speeds of 75 mph by my [xxx] spouse, who stands[xxx] and weighs [xxx]. A sudden loss of motive power and mechanical steering/braking assistance at 75 mph presents an unsurmountable vehicle handling emergency that would likely result in a high-speed crash, rollover, or catastrophic multi-vehicle collision, as a driver of her physical stature cannot safely muscle a stalled, unassisted 5,500-pound SUV to the shoulder. To mitigate this imminent risk to human life, I was forced to perform emergency out-of-pocket repairs to replace failed factory components with Ford's updated, redesigned parts. This defect represents an inherent, dangerous engineering failure requiring a mandatory federal safety recall before highway fatalities. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of informati.

56 Power Train problem of the 2020 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/06/2026

My Ford Expedition (2-wheel drive) is experiencing jerking at variety of speeds, (changing gears, slowing down) and will sometimes get stuck in gear when I press the gas. Today, as I was entering the freeway, I pressed the accelerator and the transmission did not engage—there was no power at all until I released the gas pedal and pressed it again, at which point it finally engaged. This issue happens intermittently and is a serious safety concern, especially because I cannot predict whether the vehicle will hesitate or fail to respond when accelerating.

57 Power Train problem of the 2015 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/06/2026

Issue I’m having with my 2015 Ford Expedition limited, is on multiple occasions when I’m at highway speeds my vehicle downshifts and decelerates. While im driving through the city streets, my vehicle downshifts randomly and does not upshift. On these occasions I’ve had to safely pull over and turn my vehicle off and on. Doing so resolves the problem for about 10 miles, and then back to the same issue.

58 Power Train problem of the 2020 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/03/2026

Transmission clucks when changing gears.

59 Power Train problem of the 2019 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/11/2026

10r80 transmission issues. Hard shifting, lunging forward, irradic shifting on highway, hard shifting between 3rd and 4th gear which causes the vehicle to lunge forward. Near full transmission failure on highway. Excessive loss of power and erratic shifting. Had to pull over in the highway. Mechanic states a new transmission is needed.

60 Power Train problem of the 2020 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/08/2026

Transmission will randomly jump while accelerating and downshift to the point that we have to get to the interstate shoulder. This has happened many times.

61 Power Train problem of the 2013 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/02/2026

Was never notified of the recall pertaining to my vehicle. Upon research I contacted the dealership to have the recall fixed. First issue was they offere complimentary pickup and delivery which I scheduled and they did not show up, aswell as the call that was supposed to happen, and they tell me the recall is out of its extended warranty. I contacted Ford service department and they said the same as its out of extended warranty. This is a safety concern as Ford is aware of the failing component and will not let me get the recall fixed. At the moment the vehicle is in limp mode still runs just fine but due to the recall it is not and cannot get any help from the dealership nor Ford. I was never notified that the vehicle had any recalls as we where dealing with the known harmonic balancer issue which caused the dealership to replace the engine with a new and still had to replace that balancer 3 times until it was right. Besides that distraction there was no issues occuring from the molded lead frame. This is a safety concern. The vehicle mileage is about 160k engine mileage maybe 20-30k. Original recalled component still remains. I am able to repair this myself but need to know if this was something they should be fixing.

62 Power Train problem of the 2019 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/01/2026

Vehicle experiences repeated harsh shifting, hesitation, sudden downshifts, hard downshifts with engine redlining, and loss of acceleration during normal driving. Transmission intermittently jerks violently between gears and hesitates when pulling into traffic or merging onto the highway, creating a serious safety concern. I have experienced multiple near collisions due to the vehicle hesitating or failing to accelerate properly while entering traffic and during highway merging situations. Vehicle has also unexpectedly downshifted hard while driving, causing the engine to redline and creating unsafe driving conditions. Issue has occurred multiple times and vehicle has been taken to Ford dealer for repair on several occasions. Dealer performed software updates/reprogramming, but condition persists. Vehicle currently has approximately 66,000 miles. Currently it is undrivable especially due to the fact I have children.

63 Power Train problem of the 2021 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/23/2025

Faulty cdf clutch drum. The vehicle failed to shift properly while driving in mountains which could have lead to a runaway. Problem has been identified by my dealer and is a known issue with 2017-2023 Ford expedtions. Vehicle inspected my fomoco mechanic and found issue with drum. No warnings or prompts before issue occurred.

64 Power Train problem of the 2017 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/20/2025

We were driving on the highway and suddenly lost all power. Vehicle downshifted so hard I thought someone had hit us. Then it was back to normal, driving fine. But now we had no speedometer and the check engine and wrench light were on. My wife said she had felt something like that before but it was minor and at a lower speed. It had never resulted in a check engine light or loss of speedometer. I told her to exit the highway. She was shaking like crazy because she thought we just got rear ended. I can see how this could cause someone to completely wreck it was so harsh. We towed it home and when we started it up at home all those error lights were off. So I drove it around the block and it drive fine. I had my friend come take a look. He scanned it and it had a p0720 code. He said his f150 had the same issue and the same code as well a few years back and it was covered. It turns out we have the same transmission in our Expedition that he has in his f150. I havent had a chance to call the dealer yet but the paper I read in the recall and extended waranty coverage states only going up to a 2013 vehicle. They say it was a leadframe issue causing this. My Expedition has the same leadframe, and the same issue. This is very much a saftey concern since it changes harshness of downshifting out of no where. It could be even worse next time locking the wheels up or blowing the engine. Knowing its the same transmission and the same leadframe, why isnt my year model under that recall. I was reading in the forums and there are hundreds of similar questions coming from people with Expeditions and f150s that are near to my year and not covered. Can you please let me know if there is something im missing. Thank you.

65 Power Train problem of the 2018 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/19/2025

When attempting to pass a slow moving vehicle on a 2 lane highway when driving up a hill the transmission failed to properly shift instead making a loud clunking and grinding sound before eventually managing to shift into a gear. This failure to shift properly meant that the vehicle was unexpectedly without power when trying to change lanes leading to a dangerous situation.

66 Power Train problem of the 2020 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/16/2025

2020 Ford Expedition with 38,094 miles started having delayed and rough shifting a few days after my warranty was out on December 12th. 2024. I had looked up the issue before I took it in and found all these complaints and was worried mine was having this same issue. Took to our Ford dealer and it was confirmed that my 10r80 transmission had failed and my cdf drum is worn and quoted 5600 to fix! they refuse to cover the cost knowing I and 1000's of others have had this same issue. Ford refuses to acknowledge it and the consumer is left with bill. I have owned 2 Ford explorers and 2 Expeditions in my driving life and feel like they have screwed me over. This needs to be resolved. They need to be held accountable! I am at a loss here and cant afford this fix so does a practically new ( by mileage terms ) car just sit in the yard and rot now??.

67 Power Train problem of the 2019 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/14/2025

While driving, the vehicle experiences a sudden loss of power, after which the transmission goes into what feels like a false neutral. It then violently re-engages and accelerates uncontrollably without driver input. This is an extremely dangerous situation and presents a major safety risk to us and to others on the road. Fortunately, we were able to avoid a crash, but this could have easily resulted in a serious accident. The vehicle was initially brought to the dealership for an a/c issue, and at that time we asked that this transmission concern also be inspected. We were informed that the dealership could not replicate the problem. Since then, the issue has become more frequent and more severe. We have now been told that we can drop the vehicle off, but that it may take 3–4 weeks or longer before diagnostics even begin, and that we would be responsible for out-of-pocket rental car costs during this time. We were also told that because the issue could not previously be replicated, this would now be considered customer pay, despite the fact that this is a serious powertrain and safety-related issue. We find this unacceptable. This is not a convenience issue—it is a known concern with Ford’s 10-speed transmissions, and it places our safety at risk every time the vehicle is driven. We have opened a case with Ford in hopes that assistance will be provided, including: proper diagnosis and repair of the transmission issue coverage of related repair costs assistance with a rental vehicle while the SUV is being evaluated, as it is currently unsafe to drive we trust Ford to stand behind its product and take this issue seriously before someone is injured.

68 Power Train problem of the 2017 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/11/2025

While towing our RV trailer, we received a wrench light and the vehicle when into limp mode. When we tried to slow down and take the next exit on the interstate, the transmission tried to shift from 6th gear to 1st gear, causing the rear tires to screech and slow the vehicle dramatically. This could have caused a rear collision due to the abrupt slowing of the vehicle. The problem could only be reproduced when towing a trailer for an hour or more, so the problem was not reproduced by a mechanic or service center. No one else has inspected the vehicle. The only warning light was the wrench light on the dash. There was a code stored when checked: p0735.

69 Power Train problem of the 2021 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/06/2025

During highway operation, vehicle transmission makes very loud and angry sound and then loses ability to move , almost caused us to get hit at an intersection. Vehicle often jumps violently when shifting to reverse, and often loses propulsion when going uphill and shifting. No issues have been identified by mechanics but I have found several forums on line with drivers reporting similar occurrences. This is very dangerous and if not addressed will result in loss of life. We purchased this vehicle certified by the dealer with 92000 miles on it and it began doing this less than a week after purchase. We took it in for recall work and reported it and they said nothing was wrong with it. Manufacturer failure to rectify this very common problem is going to cause may citizens to be injured or killed.

70 Power Train problem of the 2020 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/02/2025

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 25e070000 (power train); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that he lived near a school zone and was concerned that the failure could occur, causing the vehicle to strike and injure children on the road. The local dealer was not contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and advised the contact that the vehicle was safe to drive because the recall was not a safety recall. The contact had not experienced a failure.
