It has come to my attention that the trailing arms on the rear axle are failing on the early model Ford Expeditions. Upon inspection of my vehicle, I see where the failure is going to occur. The trailing arms are rotting out and will allow for the rear axle to twist out of place causing the drive shaft to become disloged and become a large run away compnent. These components on my vehicle will have to be replaced prior to this vehicle being placed back in service as this is a large safety concern. I am writing due to this defect being a safety isssue and is one which is virtually unknown by the consumer as it is not an inspectable item on any annual inspection. My internet reaserch has shown there are many of these vehicles where the issue is coming to light. There has not been a recall on these components at this point but should be examined very quickly due to the nature of the problem. I also find that Ford has udated the components on later vehicles in materials as well as overall dimensions. My feeling is that something is known on some level and the infomation is not being passed along to the consumer.

The contact owns a 1999 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that the vehicle was "limping" and the rear end dropped down. The contact inspected it and noticed that the frame was covered with rust. The contact owns a 2000 Ford Expedition. While traveling 55 mph the contact heard a loud popping sound coming from the rear of the vehicle, after examining the vehicle the contact noticed that a part of the vehicle had broken off the rear end of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic where the trailing arm was replaced. Prior to the failure the contact heard a clanking sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. The current and failure mileages were 103000.

The contact owns a 1999 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that the air ride suspension on the rear of the vehicle failed causing the vehicle to vibrate when the vehicle was being driven at various speeds. In addition, the vehicle was unstable when the contact would attempt a turn. The vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic who advised the contact that he did not locate any leaks or fractured components on the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 99,950.
I had a catastrophic failure of the rear suspension arms on my 1998 Ford Expedition. I was traveling at a slow speed when the arm snapped without warning. Had this suspension arm broken at highway speed, the result would have been a life threatening wreck. The rear end rolled up causing the vehicle to be immovable , requiring a tow for repairs. An inspection revealed, the upper support arm for rear the suspension rusted completely through, causing the arm to break. The other upper arm is rusted through badly, and both lower arms are rusted through badly. All the arms were ready to break. I am sure this failure is the fault of (1) poor engineering and design by Ford (2) poor selection of grade of steel used in making these arms (3) poor quality checks, if these arms did not meet specification. There is no way a part as robust as this needs be, should ever be able to rust through! I wrote to Ford and have not gotten a satisfactory response at this time. I had repairs made by a highly qualified mechanic. While he was obtaining parts he found this failure was becoming more common. Both upper and lower arms were replaced. One air bag had to be replaced as it was pierced by the broken arm. I have the old parts in my possession. This was a frightening and very expensive repair ,that Ford is responsible for ! my Ford Expedition is in good shape and has been well maintained, it is not a "beater". We had our 1999 Ford Expeditions air suspension actuators repaired and 3 weeks later both back air shocks exploded. It was parked about 2 hours before they exploded. Thankfully no one was injured.
The contact owns a 2007 Ford Expedition. The contact stated the rear of the vehicle would feel unstable and began to bounce excessively while driving approximately 35 mph. The rear of the vehicle was sitting unusually low and there was a decrease in vehicle control while driving. The dealer stated that they were aware of this problem and that the rear module was the cause of the failure. The failure mileage was 67,000 and the current mileage was 68,000.

Air suspension system went completely out while riding and caused vehicle to tilt from side to side on two wheels , causing vehicle to go out of control hitting tree. There were no repairs done to vehicle. The suspension system failed automatically. Vehicle was a total loss.
I have owned two Ford Expeditions, both of which were wrecked when it rained. My concern is that the vehicle becomes very loose in the rear when it rains and that is the problem that has lead to me having my accidents.

The contact owns a 1999 Ford Expedition. While driving approximately 60 mph over small bumps in the road he heard a rattle coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where he was informed the rear controls arms and tracking bar were rusted through. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 125,000 and the current mileage was 133,000.
The contact owns a 2004 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that the compressor had been failing ever since the vehicle was purchased. On may 11, 2008, while the vehicle was parked, the suspension dropped and the rear of the vehicle was resting on the rear tires. The suspension failed without warning. The vehicle has not been inspected by a dealer or mechanic. The current and failure mileages were 72,153.

rear end differential problem -
Ford safety recall no. 96s60 explains that 1997 Ford Expeditions rear axle track bar can seperate from the frame due to missing welds or a weld pattern that is not fully compatible with the design level of the bracket. This recall states that Ford is responsible for the repair of this defect from 12/1996 forward, regardless of the age, mileage, or ownership. This did happen to my vehicle and I did contact Ford, and they will not repair this.

I took truck to napleton Lincoln/Mercury for repair because suspension airbags went down they checked the truck out told me it would be $1100 total because of bad pump and censors. . . About a year later the same airbags went down again I brought the truck back and it was determined that I need a another pump that was under warranty by them it went out again with no charge to me. Less than a year's time the airbags went down again took it back to same shop they checked car out and charged an additional $800 for an airbag pump and labor. With the above warranty I feel that there should not have been a charge to me because all charges should been covered by them.
While driving my vehicle there is a vibration in the rear end with a loud bumping noise. Much like a 4x4 in a hard turn. The dealer has repaired the problem four other times and this will be the fifth. I am worried that this could be a safety issue with something happening to the axle while driving. The vehicle only has 56k miles on it. The vehicle also lurches forward on start up.
Consumer states that the rear axle trac bar bracket separated. Please provide any further information.
While traveling on 40mph hour on highway bottom of vehicle dropped down in rear of suspension.
When speeding over 35 mph front end will start to shake real badly. Contacted dealer, and the dealer was not willing to do anything.

While driving about 25mph back end dropped. Mechanic stated that it was defective suspension, and possibly came that way from manufacturer. No injuries in this accident.
While driving it was "very bumpy" during normal operation. Consumer examined vehicle, and saw that rear suspension was allowing rear of vehicle to rest on rear wheels. Dealership inspected vehicle and determined that air compressor motor and relay had to be replaced. Please provide any additional information / attachments.
When traveling on highway noticed that the rear end trembles and vibrates. Dealership is awrae of problem.
Rear axle failed causing left wheel to fall off when consumer made a turn. Yh.
Whenever the vehicle is attached to trailer the rear wheel would vibrate and shake. Dealer/manufacturer notified and informed consumer that they are aware and nothing can be done until they found the problem. Meantime, consumer is unable to use vehicle for the purpose for which he is paying for. Can NHTSA help in this matter.
When traveling at speeds 70mph & up the vehicle's rear would sway back & forth. Had steering control problem. Took vehicle to dealer & no fault was found with the steering.
Had problem repaired according to recall notice (#96v252000); problem has since returned.
Owner states while drivng vehicle,there is noise in the rear end. Dealers cannot duplicate problem. Owner is very concerned of possible safety hazard.
Consumer state while traveling 79 mph consumer notices a high pitch whining noise coming from the rear axle. Dealer has been contacted and notice rear axle was rubbing and order new axle. Please provide further information. Ts.

Expedition became uncontrollable on dry, flat, pavement. "fish tailing" until going in a ditch. Brakes were not responding; and steering was irradict.
The vehicle was bought to pull a horse trailer and weighed in at approximately 5500 pounds, owner's manual states it should be able to pull up to 7500 pounds. But when consumer was pulling the horse trailer, it fishtailed and almost flipped over because vehicle was too light in the back, and wobbled. This vehicle cannot pull horse trailer weighing about 5500 pounds.
Dealer claims to have no information on recall. The recall states that the rear axle bar bracket can separate from the frame due to missing welds or inadequate weld penetration. (id #97v171000).
Air link cupler suspension causing rear suspension to drop. Dealer is inspecting vehicle. Please provide further information.
