The tire began making a squishing noise as it rotated. Over time it became worse. Then one morning we found it flat. We took it off to put the spare tire on. At that time we observed 9 separations of the sidewall of the tire, one with cord showing through it. During its life, the tire was rotated routinely and was always kept at the vehicle manufacturers recommended pressure. It was manufactured in February of 2011.

The spare tire cable snapped on Ford Expedition at high speed and almost caused several accidents. The tire crossed the median, after being narrowly missed by the person behind me, and went into opposing traffic. Thankfully, no one was hurt or injured but I was extremely lucky!.

My 2001 Ford Expedition's (65300 miles) cable which mounts the spare tire under the vehicle has frayed and the tire has fallen off. I called my local dealership, which just worked on the car, and they said, "ya, we've seen that happen a few times. . . The cable rusts out, and the tire falls off. " I have never bottomed out the car, we have been the sole owners, and it was just in to Ford for repairs, and a "safety inspection" so it must have happened recently. I have no idea when or where this could have happened. I must have been driving, because otherwise I would have backed over it, had I been parked. I may have been going 65 mph down the highway with my three children in the car! and god help anyone behind me! this seems to me to be an extremely dangerous defect, I can only hope my car was not the cause of an accident to another. Now I am forced to endure yet another costly repair to a car, which for its limited 65,000 miles has already had its share. Two months ago I was told that I was lucky that I brought it in for repairs to an engine problem, because its ball joints were so bad that the front wheels were going to fall off! this is not the kind of thing that a mother, who uses this vehicle to transport her three small children around in, wants to hear! and now, the spare tire has fallen off! it will require the replacement of the mounting mechanism, as well as the tire and wheel, assureably, not to be cheap! thank you for your time and consideration. Respectfully, kim wyman.
The spare tire of my 1997 Ford Expedition (truck) is normally threaded with a wire rope and winched up into place beneath the back of the Expedition. It works well and is easier to use than the traditional bolt/plate. However, in January 2005,my wife was driving on grant road a major street in tucson arizona and the wire rope broke and the tire flew off from beneath our Expedition and bounced wildly down the road. Fortunately nothing and no one hit the tire; but there was potential for a very serious accident if it had been hit by one or more cars. Traffic stopped and my wife went back and retrieved the errant tire from the middle of three lanes. I do not know if the cable was corroded; but living in a dry climate of the arizona desert I do not believe this was the case. There was no rust of any kind I could see. I believe Ford motor company should notify truck owners to inspect the cable for defects. We were very lucky that a lot of damage wasn't done to other vehicles or humans.
While consumer was driving on the expressway at 75 mph spare tire cable broke, and the tire flew off. There was no report of accident/injury.
I had pulled up in my driveway and the spare tire just dropped out on the driveway. I was concerned what may have happend if this would have happen while driving out on the highway and my spare tire and dropped out on the highway, what damage, injury or even death that it could have caused. I reported this to my dealership, and they was not to concerned, they just told me what it would cost to replace the cable for the spare tire holder. I believe this is really a safety factor that should be corrected by Ford.

Driving thru a parking lot while going over a speed bump my spare tire fell out from under my Ford 2000 Expedition cable broke on wench. I am now talking with dealer for replacement. I am worried that same thing can happen with new wench possible on freeway.
The spare tire retention cable failed, causing the spare tire to fall out of the bottom of my 1997 Ford Expedition. This happened under normal highway driving conditions on a busy section of road. There fortunately were no vehicles following at the time or there most assuredly would have been an accident.
While parking spare tire rack bolts located underneath the vehicle snapped. This caused the spare tire to fall to the ground. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
While the vehicle was parked spare tire cable broke. This caused the tire to fall off from underneath the vehicle. Consumer drove the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the spare tire cable assembly needed to be replaced.
I own a 1999 Ford Expedition. I was driving home when I heard a bump in the back of my vehicle. I looked in the rear view mirror to see my spare tire bouncing off another vehicle and rolling down the street. If I had been going at a faster rate of speed, someone could have been seriously injured if not killed. I stopped to retrieve the tire when I noticed that the cable holding the tire had just snapped. After a little research on the internet I have discovered that this is not an isolated incident. When I called the dealer to see if there had been a recall they said there had not, but they could sell me a replacement for $78. This is not just about money, it's about a known problem that Ford needs to fix. As I said before, "someone can be seriously injured by this problem". Can you look into this problem? thanks.
Spare tire cable broke underneath the truck while driving 20 mph or less, causing the spare tire to roll into another vehicle on the highway. The dealer was contacted.
Spare tire assembly failed, causing the spare tire to come unattached.
Without warning spare tire assembly failed, causing the spare tire to come unattached from the assembly. Driver pulled the vehicle over to get the spare tire from out of the street.
The spare tire which is mounted under the body of my 2000 Ford Expedition fell off while I was on an entrance ramp of an expressway. Fortunately, the errant spare tire did not hit the cars behind me. The tire was held by a steel cable that broke. This is a very serious safety issue that needs to be addressed, and not swept under the rug. The local Ford dealership would not fix it without payment. I notified the corp customer service department for Ford. Got the runaround, and was told that they would forward to the engineering dept. I know that this same issue happened to a friend of mine. This is a real safety issue.
While driving the cable holding spare under car tore allowing tire to hit my car and almost cause an accident.
While driving and without warning spare tire fell off from back of vehicle.
Defective spare tire cable assembly.
Spare tire fell off of 1997 Ford Expedition while driving on road. The spare is suspended by a cable under the rear section of the vehicle. This event occurred while driving at very slow speed. However, the car following behind my vehicle could not avoid the fallen tire and drove over the top. The defective tire suspension cable was replaced, at my expense, by a local dealer. I am concerned about what may have happened if this had occurred while driving on the freeway.
Consumer states while driving 60mph the spare tire fell on to the highway. Ts.
Cable that binds up spare tire fails to release spare tire for use. Design was very flawed. Consumer states he bought design flaw to the attention of Ford, they pulled the part from the parts bin for the 2001 Expedition and it was exactly the same as consumer's vehicle.
I was returning to GA from florida, and I heard this chopper noise!! there were no choppers above. A passerby motioned to my left rear tire. I pulled over and the tread was coming off the tire! a college student removed the tire and installed my spare. He would not take any money for the outstanding job to install the spare tire. I had my 4 children in the SUV!!( dot number: tire size: 25570r16 ).
Spare tire fell off vehicle. The cable holding the spare tire broke letting the spare tire fall from under the vehicle and bouncing around on the road.
While driving our Expedition on the freeway at approximatly 55 miles per hour, over smooth dry road conditions suddenly the right rear tire exploded, I felt the truck lift up a little then we could hear the rim scraping on the road. I pulled over imediatly and could see that the tire looked as though it had disintegrated. After changing it with the spare tire I took it straight to the dealer where I had bought the truck, they told me I would have to call back later in the weak to talk to an representative so I called them back on Monday and they told me I must have hit something and thats what must have happend. I told them no I did not and that I am a carefull driver you see my wife and two children where also in the car with me at the time, besides I would have seen or heard the noise if I had hit something. They where very rude to me. Then I told my wife what they said and she was very upset with them ( korum Ford ) she called and complained and got very angry with them over the phone and they hung up on her, so we sent a letter to Ford motor CO . I then took the tire to goodyear and they at least treated me with some respect they said the tire could be sent out for independent study which if it showed no defect in the tire then I would have to pay full price or they could simply discount a new tire by 50% since it was a questionable cause. The goodyear dealer told me in his opinion the tire Ford uses is too light for such a big truck, the Expedition falls just under the maximum weight limit for the tire and since it is a tall vehicle it leans a lot around corners putting a lot of stress on the tire. Then I remembered that when the tire blew I had just come out of some s curves in the road. When the tire blew it also damaged the rim which is a $350 dollar rim and the cost of a new tire it was about $500 dollars!! a bit expencive for a blow out . But at least no one was hurt ! had I not been attentive to my driving we could have crashed into the fullsize van n.
Spare tire equipment for the 2000 Ford Expedition has a cut in the sidewall . The tire was new original equipment and was never used.
There was excessive tread wear and exposed steel belts on the left front tire. The spare tire showed exactly the same signs. The rear tire on the drivers side blew out along with side wall separation about 18 inches long. There were no obvious or unusual tread wear on this tire, consumer states the spare tire also exhibited the signs.
The spare tire cable wench thats bring the tire up and down broke while turning a corner causing the spare tire to come off, the consumer thinks the location of the spare is in a dangerous area. Nlm.
