My 2012 Ford Expedition suffered a catastrophic tire failure while travelling at 65mph on the freeway. The tire was only 11 months old with approximately 9000 miles. The tire was inflated properly and had no external signs of wear. Slightly before the tire sidewall separated I heard a slapping sound from the left front and eased off the gas. The tire then popped loudly and caused the vehicle to become hard to control. I was able to slow down and get to the side of the road to replace it with the spare. The tire was a goodyear wrangler sr-a. Fortunately no one was hurt but the tread caused some minor damage in the wheel well area. This was a very dangerous situation caused by an unreliable tire.

On 10/20/07, the sidewall of my goodyear fortera (right rear) failed. My wife lost pressure and had to aaa change the tire. Goodyear stated (la quinta dealer) the tire was damage by a unknown object. On 10/26/07, I was driving driving when the left rear tire failed. I pulled over and changed the tire. I later had the tire inspected and the inner sidewall separated and appeared to be the same size and detail of the previous tire failure. When I took it to the goodyear dealer (cedar city ut) they told me that I had driven on the tire too long and I caused the damage. I was lucky, I immediately pulled over and changed the tire before I lost all air pressure. There was "no damage" on the tire due to my driving. The damage tire failure was about a 4-5 inch rectangular shape hole. The second tire began the same way. The sidewall began to separate in the same fashion and had not "blown out" prior to me changing it.

I noticed today that the side wall tires on my michelin -cross terrianin SUV radial x tires appear to have cross cuts in the sidewalls on 3 of 4 tires (one was recently replaced). Another the rubber appears to breaking off, leaving a white coating behind the rubber. Plan to take to dealer who sold me the tires, but am doubtful the will act.

My Ford Expedition was outfitted a little over 3 years ago with goodyear wranglers by Ford due to the firestone tire failure. Recently, while washing the vehicle I noticed failure in the sidewall of the driver's side rear tire. All around the rim approximately 1/2 to 3/4" from the rim there are cracks in the rubber sidewall opening up as the earth does during an earthquake. These are approximately 2-3" long and a little over 1/8" deep so far. This is highly unusual for three year old tires. These will be removed before the next long trip as I will not wait for failure and put my or my family in danger.

: the contact stated that the tires on the vehicle have cracks all the way around the tread and up the sidewall. The tires were purchased when the vehicle had 88000 miles on it, and the cracks were observed when the vehicle reached 108000 miles. The tires were taken to the service retailer for repair who determined the cracks were a result of normal wear and tear.
I drive a 2004 Ford Expedition eb with contential contitrac SUV p265r70 17 tires. Dec 2004 (2) two of the tires had to be replaced due to cracks/tears in the sidewalls, the vehicle had 17k miles . At that time I was told my other tires are fine. I have 22k miles on the vehicle now, and a tire has developed cracks and "chips" and the connection between sidewall and tread. These tires are a serious problem waiting to hurt the public.
The continental contratrac 265/70r17 tires on my 2003 Ford Expedition have stress cracks on the sidewalls. So far, three out of four. Have 25,000 miles on it. Am now going back and forth between continental, the Ford dealer, and tire dealer. Continental does not seem to want to consider this a defect. However, my son's Expedition-identical and purchased same day as mine, now has one tire doing same thing.
Traveling on new portion of I-670 my rear tire blew out. SUV has 52,000 miles on it, the tire that blew was the original and it had 6,000 miles on it. Spare was put on SUV oct 30, 2003.

This is to let you know about a potentially dangerous problem with the continental contitrac tr tires that came standard on the 2003 Ford Expedition. The following is a copy of an email that I sent to the continental customer service department. I think that has all of the information you will need to start looking into this problem. Please feel free to call me with any questions since I think this is a very important issue. You have a length of only 2000 words and my message to them is too long so please contact me for the rest of the message. Dear rashida, (or whomever else sees this message) I thank you for your help and concern this morning. I have some interesting news. I think it is quite astounding and will warrant some major attention from the powers that be. Not only is the damage to my tires a manufacturer defect but the damage is in all of my tires, including one that was replaced about 6 months ago. The other original that had to be replaced may have had the same problem since it had a gash in the side that caused it to go flat. After talking with you I happened to mention my problem to a neighbor who asked me to have her husband look at it. As it turns out he had been a plant supervisor for kelley-springfield tires before moving up to this area. He knows all about tire manufacturing and testing. He took one look at my tire and said "there is no way that was caused by a razor, that is a defect and it is bad news. " he told me to let whomever I talked to know that the tire is separating "where the apex meets the sidewall. " he went into a bit more technical description but I am not an expert so I can't accurately relay what he said. He said it is a major safety issue and he bets that a major recall will be occurring, hopefully before anything tragic occurs. He is not an overly excitable man but he probably told me about 10 times to get the tires off of my car.
In February 2004, we purchased an expedtion from world Ford in stone mountain, georgia. The vehicle has 8100 miles to date. On June 6, 2004, at approximate 3:00 pm, my children and I were enroute to a birthday party and a tire (rear right) blew out. I was in the middle of the freeway during major traffic and had to travel less than 1/2 mile to get over and off. I called my husband who came to pick the children and me up. On Monday, June 7, we went to world Ford to talk with them about the matter and was told that the tires that came standard with the truck was not under warranty with them. We explained that when we purchased the vehicle, we were not informed of any outside warranties. They recommended that we go to national tire and battery to have them call the manufacturer. We traveled to ntb and was told by ntb that they have nothing to do with world Ford's custom tire package and could not help us. After going around the world, we finally reached the manufacturer and was told to take it to tires plus. Now we are waiting for tire plus to inform us that continental will replace the tire.
Consumer states tires sidewall is cracking without warning.
The replacement goodyear tire on the passenger rear side sidewall blew out on the highway .
Right rear continental conitrac tire on 2003 Ford expedtion blew at highway speed(65-67mph). Highway condtions were normal. Ford dealer examined tire and could find no foregin object to cause sidewall blowout. They sent it to the manufacturer, who determined same thing. Ford/dealer reimbursed me for the new tire, but did not do anything about the other 3, which those tires concern me that they may blow at any time.
My wife had a tire blowout on our 2002 Ford Expedition . Tires mounted on the vehicle were the general aw grabbers 17inch. We were informed last year a couple of months after vehicle was purchased that these tires had been recalled. We contacted dealership and took our vechicle in to another local dealership, and they said no they had not been recalled even after we insisted they at least look at the tires. My wife and infant child were in the vechicle which caused extensive damage to the car but thankfully only minor bumps and bruises to my family. We are in the process of getting legal advice and have taken numerous pictures of the tire and had our own tech examine the tire.
Continental contitrac tr - p265-70r-17 sidewall came completely apart and almost caused a tragedy. My family is not safe with these tires on my new Expedition - found out continental had a recall in 2002 and wanted to let you know of another problem - Ford would not replace my tires - only the one that could have killed my family. There is no damage to the tread - the tire just completely seperated in 2 pieces. I would like to send a picture if possible, and would give you the tires for testing.

While traveling on smooth dry pavement, the right rear tire suddenly exploded. Both the inside and outside sidewalls were blown out. This was a new original equipment tire with less than 8000 miles on it. The car had just been serviced by the dealership within the last three weeks and all tires were properly inflated. While traveling at 62-65 mph on dry, smooth pavement the right rear tire suffered a sudden sidewall blowout. Both the inside and outside walls were totally destroyed. I have digital photographic documentation if you are interested. Luckily it was a rear tire and not a front tire at that speed. The car has less than 8000 miles on it and had just been serviced by the dealership within the last 3 weeks and all tires were properly inflated. My concern at this time is the structural integrity of the other three tires and the safety of my family while traveling on these tires. If this tire has a history of similar incidents please add this accident to it. . . If not please start a new file and track potential manufacturer's problems. Dt.

Prior to leaving my house for a trip to napa valley with my family, I checked the tire pressures on all four tires to ensure the safety of my passengers and myself. I have 6 relatively small-sized adult and a child as passengers. 25 miles into the trip, travelling on the slow lane of interstate 880, I heard a popping sound as if something hit the underside of my vehicle. A few seconds later, I can see smoke from behind through my side mirror and a shudder. Realizing I had a flat tire, I was able to pull over to the side of the freeway. The outer sidewall of the tire completely separated itself from the rest of the tire. An officer of the California highway patrol by the name of officer espiritu assisted us in getting back on the road again. I was not able to get pictures of the damaged tire then because of safety concern but I was able to take some pictures of it as soon as I got home. The aaa tow truck driver/mechanic who helped us even commented that the tire is still in good shape. The time and date of the incident was between 9:15 - 9:45 am of August 25.

At 8:30 am on a cool morning, the tire suddenly exploded without any warning after only 3 miles on I-17, and a total of 16 miles from start up. The highway was dry and clean. I coasted to a stop without braking, or any steering problem. The outside side wall is completely seperated 3600from the tread. There are 25 radial splits in the sidewall, averaging 3" long, almost to the rim. The tread shows no damage. The inside sidewall has one damaged area near the tread. The tire was not hot. The other three tires appear to be ok, but so did this one prior to failure. I have photos, and will keep the tire for inspection. The tire was made in canada. Please advise if you want the tire or photos. (tiresize: p255/70r16)( dot number: tire size: p255/70r16 ).
Every month I check my tire pressure. In checking the tire pressure on April 6th, I noticed that on all four tires, there was a splitting/crack which ran about three-quarters of an inch from right to left right under the tread knuckle where the knuckle of the tread would happen to meet the sidewall of the tire. I immediately called the service manager at my Ford garage which is venus Ford in cudahy, wisc. He told me over the phone that I would have to contact an authorized firestone dealer. I contact muskego firestone in muskego, WI. They inspected the tires and I was told that all four tires were unsafe. After I asked the owner (keith) how safe the tires actually were,he told me "if those tires were on my vehicle, they'd be coming off. " keith contacted firestone. Firestone would not replace the tires free of charge I guess in doing this they would not admit to any default with the tire or with theie workmanship. The only thing firestone would do for me was to replace all four tires under a pro-rating system. Don't get me wrong, the tires were wearing like iron and for having 34,600 miles on them, the actual tread wear looked like the tires only had 10,000 miles on them. The depth of the tires were measured by the firestone dealer and all four tires came in at 10/32. The tires before coming off of my vehicle were documented by the firestone dealer on some form which I had to sign. On this form, the serial numbers of all four tires were listed and the their actual position on the vehicle. The replacement tires firestone provided were again their wilderness at's and same size. My cost which included labor and tax came out to about $50. 00 per tire. After seeing the splits/cracks in the tires I wanted these tires removed because it was my concern that there was definitely a safety issue here. Especially with a family and this family vehicle going to be used very shortly for two separte family vacations. (tiresize: 265/70r17).
