21 Tire Blowout problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 04/22/2001

I experienced a tire blow out (left rear) wilderness at (p255/70r16) on a '99 Expedition going approximately 55 mph. The outside sidewall came apart, completely separating from the rest of the tire. There is an area on the tire that had cracks on the tread close to the main part of the tire. I took the car to my Ford dealer in grapevine first because they had just inspected the tires for me approximately 3 weeks ago. They recommended highly that I take the tire to firestone, that the only thing they could do for me was to sell me 5 new tires, costing more than $700 total. I then took the car to my firestone dealer where after I pointed out to my technician the damage, he tried to expain to me that a blow out is "normal" whenever there is damage to a tire and that the tire had been driven with low air pressure which is why the sidewall was torn up. I tried to explain that the tires have never been low on pressure, that I check them myself at a minimun of 1 time per week and never drive the vehicle until I have checked them, and Ford checks them approximately every 3,000 miles and rotates them according to specs. He was not interested. I asked if my other 3 tires were safe in his opinion and without doing more than a quick glance said "they are as safe as any tire". I asked him again and explained that I have a 5 year old and all I wanted was to ensure the vehicle was safe, he stated that "I would be more uncomfortable about driving a Ford than I would be about your tires". This is completely unacceptable to me and I feel that attitudes and reactions like this to an obviously realistic concern is criminal. I also asked them to return the damaged tire to me, which I had to remind them to do. I then took the car & tire to national tire and battery (whom I trust) and asked for their opinion on the tire. On interstate at 70mph vehicle became hard to control for about 2-3 miles. As we slowed down the tire blew out. Tire was smoking and shredded in several places. When returned home we tried to get medford Lincoln dealership in dothan, al to replace the tire. They stated it was a roadhazard and would sell us a tire for $135. We took the tire to a goodyear dealership in dothan, al and thay stated they found a piece of plastic in the tire and said that was what made it shred and gave us a piece of plastic he said was lying in the tire. We took the vehicle back to medford and they said they saw the plastic the day before but never said anything about it to us. Was there really a piece of plastic in the tire and if so how did it get in the tire and why didn't medford Lincoln dealership in dothan, al mention it was in there, or was this just a cover up on there part? we noticed on a web site where there had been complaints about goodyear wrangler tires before. 30 Tire Blowout problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 07/20/2000

We were traveling on I-40 returning from a trip to colorado and had a blow out about 20 miles west of weatherford, ok. The tire was on a brand new car with only 4500 miles. We had checked the tires when we left colorado that morning and they were fine. When the tire blew, the car was very hard to control and pitched side to side wildly. My husband was able to regain control of the car and pull off the road. When road side assistance arrived, the man commented that the tire did not look like a normal blow out and that we should have it checked. I took the car back to the Ford dealership who assured me that there was nothing wrong with the tire other than a normal road hazard (this also prevented me from collecting on the tire warranty). He also was not concerned about how the car reacted to the blown tire. I do not feel that I would have been able to control the car if I had been driving. I was not pleased with the lack of concern about my comments. I spoke to at least 2 friends who can testify under oath that I made comments about my concerns about the quality of the tires and my concern about the lack of control after the tire failed. These comments were made during July 24-28 before any of the current information about Ford and firestone was made public. I regret that I did not keep the tire that blew. I hope that you will expand your investigation to include all firestone wilderness at tires as well as the Ford Expedition. ( dot number: vncu 1rd 4 tire size: p255/70r16 ).

31 Tire Blowout problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 06/15/2000

The tire blew while driving around 70 mph. The recall started shortly after we had it replaced. We asked bill currie Ford to replace it under warrantee because it looked like a defect not a regular blow out. The tread was completely seperated from the tire. They refused saying the tires were not under warrantee. We should have reported this when the recall was anounced, but when we finally decided to replace all five firestone tires Ford gave us your website to report our original blow out. We do not have the tire that blew but we did store the four remaining firestone tires, with the same dot number. (dot number: w2cu tiresize: 255/70r16).

Tire had complete failure (blowout) on interstate 95 at 70 mph at approximately 0700 on may 16th, 2000. Was able to keep control and return to outside emergency lane and replace with the spare. The spare also has four serious indentations in the sidewall and I do not consider safe to use. I went to a tire kingdom store the next day and purchased 4 new michelin tires and had the spare replaced under the vehicle. This was before a recall was announced and I did not keep the blown tire. 34 Tire Blowout problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 11/15/1999

Rear passenger tire blewout. . . Sounded like a gunshot then the vehicle immediately dropped onto the rim,ii coasted to a stop. Had the car towed to a firestone dealer, asked the technician what could cause this to occur on a tire with less than 3000 miles on it. He said he couldn't tell, but because of the location of the rupture he didn't think I ran over anything. He said I was "lucky to have firestone tires because the rupture was so close to the sidewall on a cheaper tire it would not have been able to be repaired. Right now I dont feel so lucky to own firestone tires. Should I replace all 4 tires with another brand? thank you. (dot number: w2cuird019 tiresize: p255-70r16).
