11 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2003 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/13/2007

On March 13, 2007, our 2003 Ford Expedition had a tread separation tire failure. We were pulling a travel trailer and both vehicles rolled over twice. The tires were original equipment continental tires. Two of the four passengers were injured enough to require emergency room treatment. One was airlifted to the hospital, the other driven to the hospital. Both were treated nad released the same day. Continental tires are dangerous and should not have been on this vehicle based on the tire recalls that have occurrred. I was unaware of any safety problems with continental tires.

12 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2003 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 11/23/2006

Ford Expedition 2003 XLT, 53700 miles, continental contitrac SUV tires, tread separation on left rear tire, damage to the wheel well area, replaced all 5 orig. Tires with michelin tires for about $1. 000. 00, kept all tires. Managed to stop car before roll over. No recall received from Ford. What should I do?.

13 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2002 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 10/06/2006

Traveling at highway speed my vehicle developed a distinct vibration shortly followed by a tread separation. We reduced speed and pulled into a service station where the spare was installed. The same scenario took place approximately one week later with a different tire. The vehicle is a 2002 Ford Expedition, purchased new in October 2001, and currently having less than 30,000 miles on it. Tires (general grabber aw) are original equipment and have been routinely rotated and inspected by the dealer during scheduled maintenance. After the first incident, the spare was put on--it, too, is a general grabber aw, same age as the others--and a new spare was purchased. That spare was put on after the second incident. I have the two defective tires. General tire was contacted and they will not replace the unsafe tires.

14 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2003 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 06/05/2006

Three of the four original tires on my 2003 Ford Expedition have had a tread separation failure. The first occurred June 2006 at approximately 36,000 miles. This tire was replaced pro rata at the Ford dealership. The second occurred fall of 2007 at 48,000 miles and was also replaced pro rata at the dealership. Now a 3rd tire has failed, Feb 2008 at approximately 52,000 miles.

15 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 05/18/2006

Own a 2000 Ford Expedition (original owner) and had tires replaced as part of recall of 2002. Tires were replaced at local Ford dealership with general grabber aw p275/60/r17. Recently I noticed "steering" and "bumpy" ride, so I took vehicle to get it checked out. Mechanic showed how one tire had "bowed out" feature and explained that this was a "tread separation" and needed to be replaced. Remembering prior recall for same reason, was concerned this was a possible manufacturer defect. Researched on internet and found # to call at continental to report. Called and spoke with "bill" who recorded my concerns and created a file #22239. Told me a could go to national tire and battery and have it checked out. Went to ntb and the technician examined the tire and said he could not prorate the warranty. I explained that I just wanted to inform the manufacturer of the possibility of a manufacturer defect in case there were other complaints for the same type of tire. He said that with the apparent age of the tire it could have been caused by a bump that had caused the weakness. My expectations for a tire is for the tread to wear out before any other breakdown.

16 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2002 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/17/2006

I have a 2002 Ford Expedition SUV with tire problems. I had a tire tread detachment separation on a general grabber aw tire p275/60r17 on 2/17/06. The same tires that are on my vehicle were recalled for year 2000 and year 2001 Ford Expedition suvs in 2002 (reference NHTSA campaign id number 02t012000). I have called the Ford company and they have told me they could not do anything about this problem. All the tires seem to have a slight vibration problem. It has not ridden smoothly since I bought the vehicle in 2002. I had Ford check it in 2002 and they said it just had vibration due to it being a SUV. The tire vibration became worse just before the tire failed and had the tire rubber detachment separation. I would like to see if you can help me to get Ford to replace these tires and pay me for the tire that failed also. These tires are a safety hazard.

17 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2003 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 10/20/2005

The contact stated the driver's side rear tire came apart on the tread. This happened while driving on the interstate at 70 mph. It pulled off the bottom part of the truck, and did damage to the bumper and paint damage to the door. The vehicle was pulled over and a mechanic had to be called to change the tire. The tire still had air, just the tread was coming off. The tire was taken to the dealership, but they state it was not covered under the warranty.

18 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 1998 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 10/13/2005

The steel belt is sticking out of the rubber on the tire. It is occurring where the tread meets the sidewall. The tire is a goodyear wrangler rt/s p265/70r17. The contact noticed that this problem had allowed air to leak out of the tire. This was on October 13, 2005. The tire was located on the front passenger's side . The contact examined the tire, and found that there was no puncture marks in the tire. When the contact took vehicle back to the dealer, they said that it was due to driving on a low tire. The contact had not driven with the tire on the vehicle when he noticed the problem. The tire was purchased used.

Failure Date: 08/23/2005

2000 Expedition tire tread separated.

20 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2001 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 07/10/2005

The contact owns a 2001 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that he had a tread separation on a tire. The tire was located on the passenger rear side. This occurred while driving at about 65-70 mph. The dealership stated to submit the tires to continental tire for evaluation of the tires. The manufacture is continental. The model name is grabber aw. The tire line is 27560r17. The dot number is 27560r17. He thinks that the tire manufacture recommends that the tire pressure be 33psi. The contact does not that the psi on his tires is what ever the manufacture recommends. The tires are regularly serviced such as tire pressure checks and tire rotation. There where some vibration while driving the vehicle. He did not notice any abnormal bulging in the tire before this happened. This occurred on July 10, 2005. The contact does not currently have the tire because he submitted it to continental for evaluation. Updated 11/16/2005 -.

21 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2003 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 05/13/2005

23 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2002 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 04/17/2005

There was no accident, but substantial damage to my SUV caused by the tire tread separation at 65 mph. This problem is similar to the class action lawsuit settled last year by Ford regarding tire tred separation on their SUV line. My Expedition had a tred separation on the left front tire at 65 mph, which caused damage to the bumper, wheel well, and running board. The tire was still perfectly inflated, but the entire tread, which is still hardly worn, completely separated from the tire, causing this damage. I talked to Ford customer service, and they said it was my responsibility as it is out of the 36,000 mile waranty. They are lucky my SUV didn t flip over and kill me, like many before me who had this same problem. These are the original factory tires that Ford installed on my new expedition. I feel they are responsible for replacing the tires and fixing the damage caused by their defective product. I would like Ford to repair the damage to my SUV caused by their defective tire. I would also like Ford to replace the remaining tires so that this doesn't happen again.

24 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2001 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 04/02/2005

Purchased a 2001 Ford Expedition from maroone Ford in margate on 11/05/2004. The tires that came with this vehicle were the contitrac aw id # 02t012000. On 04/02/05 while traveling on I-95 at the speed of 55 mph my left rear tire blew out. I was able to get the truck under control without hitting any other cars and I was not injured. I had that tired replaced the same day and thought it must have been something on I-95 that caused the tire to blow out. On 05/21/05 while traveling east on commercial blvd in fort lauderdale florida at a spead of 30 mhp the right rear tire blew out, I drove the truck into tire kingdom and had that tire replaced as well. This morning while parking at work I noticed thread separation lumps had developed on the two remaining tires, at this point I realized something had to be wrong with the tires, and through the internet I found out there was a recall on these tires. I contated the dealership who sold me the truck inmediately and was told they could not do anything to correct the problemp because to their knowledge there is no recall in effect for these tires and that the manufacturer would have to be the one to replace them, but that if I could not wait to then take the truck to the nearest tire kingdom to have the tires replaced and that they would pro rate the cost of the tires. I had both tires replaced this afternoon, again at my own expense. In the past two months I have replaced all four tires on this vehicle, and the dealership has not been of any assitance, they sold me a tire warranty product that does not cover these type of incidents, the product was misrepresented to me and I intend to file a separate complaint with the fla insurance commissioners office regarding that matter. I contacted a naca representative today and was advised to contact Ford and to contact your office and file a complaint any assistance you can provide in obtaining reimbursement for the cost of these tires is greatly appreciated.

28 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2002 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 11/24/2004

During our thanksgiving holiday, I was traveling at highway speeds with my family on my way from phoenix, az to las cruces, nm when the right rear general grabber aw p275/60r17 factory installed tire of my 2002 Ford Expedition experienced tread separation. There was no police report nor were there any injuries. The tire did not deflate, but it did an estimated $2,241. 47 in damage to my Expedition when the tread separated. Please note that the tires were inflated as recommended as indicated on the door sticker. I check the air in my tires prior to each trip as the safety of my family matters most. This right rear tire was inflated to exactly 33 psi the day before the trip. I have submitted a claim to continental north America who deny any workmanship and/or material fault. They only want to offer $1,000 in goodwill, which will not cover the damages caused by the tire tread separation.

29 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2003 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 11/24/2004

I bought a 2003 Ford Expedition. I have been having problems w/ the ride, only to be told by the dealer that the only fix is to replace all of the tires. I only have 20000 miles (almost all highway) on the tires, with good tread depth. According to the technician "they've had tons of problems" with the continental contitrac SUV tires. If this is the case, why isn't there a recall? this vehicle is very hard to steer with the tire problem, and it shouldn't be the consumer that pays for these flaws.
