Tire Tread/belt problems of the 2000 Ford Explorer - part 1

Contact states while driving vehicle on the interstate at 60 mph the tread separated from the tire. This, in turn, caused the vehicle to lose control. The vehicle bounced back and forth, sending the occupants from side to side, up and down, almost causing the vehicle to over turn. When the vehicle stopped it hit the pavement , causing extensive damage to the vehicle. There was no vibration in the vehicle or the tires prior to this incident. The tire was located on the back driver's side. Injuries were sustained. No police report taken.

Bought a set of continantal tires for my 2000 Ford ranger. After using the tires for sometime (approx 40% ware) I noticed a slight shaking with the vehicle. I took the vehicle into the same shop I got the tires and had them rotated and the front end aligned. The vehicle immediately started to get worse. I was waiting for my next day off but the day before my day off I was traveling at 75 mph on I-95 in palm bay, florida and the tread on the right rear tire seperated. Although I was able to maintain control of the vehicle it did turn sideways on the road three times and at one point I was up on only two tires. Upon checking I found that all tires were inflated but the tire tread on the right rear side had seperated from the tire. That same day I returned to the tire shop and had the manager look at the tire. He said that the tire shoulg not have done what it did with that short amount of miles on it. He said that firestone would replace the tires and repair the damage done to the right rear area of my truck bed. I was instructed to call the the firestone clames officer which I did on the morning of 06-27-05. Also on that date I was contacted by the tire dealer that firestone would not handle the clame as the tires were "continantal". I had to call contintal and they were not very helpful. After a very long conversation they finally agreed to cover a new set of tires with a 60% discount. I got firestone tires. They are also insisting that I send them the defective tire for their examination to see if they would fix the damage to my truck. I do not think that I should send the evidence of their defective tire to them and loose custody of it. I asked if someone in florida could check the tire and they said no> I feel that the tire was defective, I feel that my life and safety was in question and I feel that contential tire company is attempting to conceal this by taking, or attempting, to take possession of the tire.

While driving 55 mph, the tire tread separated. This caused a roll over. The vehicle was towed. Please provide more information.

Tread separation on left rear tire of 2000 Ford Explorer caused driver to lose control of vehicle. Detread tire was put on the Explorer as part of the firestone recall in sept. 2000. Vehicle rolled several times, driver side leading. Both occupants were belted. Front passenger remains in a coma. Tire continental contitrac SUV m + s 235/75 r15 adhl ejj 4600.

I currently drive a 2000 Ford Explorer 6 cyl. 2 wheel drive w/ goodyear wrangler rt/s tires. I was recently notified by midas of orland park after having my front brakes replaced that the front passenger tire has a belt that has shifted. My tires were replaced due to the recall of the firestone tires. At that time I had roughly 16,000 miles on the SUV. At the present time I have just under 40,000 miles on the SUV. I did not notice that the tire was bad mainly due to the fact that the Ford Explorer is a very rough ride. I do not go off roading with this vehicle nor do intentially hit large bumps or pot holes at a rapid speed. I am not only disappointed with the performance of the vehicle but also with the performance of the tires. Since the Explorer rides rough (a side to side wobbling motion) I can see were many accidents occured. The owner of the vehicle is unable to detect a default in the tire. The question I pose is, is Ford at fault because of there inadequate engineering and unstabe suspension or is goodyear at fault for the manufacturing of faulty tires?.

While driving, the left rear tire experienced a blowout where the tread meets the sidewall. Consumer is seeking reimbursement for the purchase of new tires. Ford replaced the firestone tires with the general tires and didn't want to replace all four tires like she asked. Consumer was aware of the blowout problems with general tires. General ameri 660 as size/d255/70r16, dot number adcu db2.

The vehicle developed severe vibration and immediately the left rear tire experienced complete tread separation. This caused damage to the left fender. The driver was able to maintain control and changed over to a spare tire to continue his trip. On another occasion, there was a thumping sound and the right rear tire developed a bulge and became unusable.

Tread tore off while traveling from California. Caused extensive damage to the side of the car. Have contacted Ford and the dealership. Which neither will take responsibility for damage. Am calling firestone next. (tiresize: 235/75r/15).

Pe 00 020/tread separation: left rear tire experienced a tread separation while traveling at 40 mph, with only driver in a 2000 Ford, Explorer; original equipment, tire size p235/75r15, dot# unavailable; dealer notified. Tire separated at sidewall, causing damage to the molding on the right rear door.

After purchase of firestone 235/75r15 wilderness at tires (dot # 8xhl), consumer found tread caps had a saw tooth shape measuring about 3/4 inch crosswise and a deep crack in the tread cap, consumer replaced tires after recall notice and was reimbursed.

While driving less than 30 mph, there was a blow out on right rear wilderness at p25570r16 tire, not involved in recall (00t-005), owner would like to be reimbursed for cost of 4 new michelin tires. Cj.

Goodyear wrangler tires p255/70r16 experienced belt separation, the 2 tires had less than 100 miles on them when consumer started noticing poor ride and noise from faulty tires, dealer replaced tires.

Original tires on a 2000, Ford, Explorer sport, p23575r15, hd. Driver's rear tire, while traveling at 65 mph no bumps on the road, tire separated in 3 sections, completely seperated. Consumer stated that tire busted fuel tank feeder tube.

The firestone tires on the vehicle experienced failure, however not included in the recall (oot-005).

While driving the right rear firestone tire separated from the wheel causing the steering wheel to vibrate, these tires were not included under recall, consumer purchased five new tires and request reimbursement. Nlm.

She was traveling about 25mph on the highway and hit a pothole in the street, and front left tire was puncturd inside of the tire. She took the spare out and replaced it. She took the tire to a tire repair shop tried to repair and the tire would not hold air and the tire started splitting at the middle of the tire. The tires are firestone wilderness at p23575r15. She has received a recall letter. The firestone dealer refuses to replace the tire even after telling the consumer that the tire would be replaced free of charge.

Pe00 020 ;vehicle was parked in front of house and he noticed that there were stress marks going all around the tires. He has contacted firestone, and attendant told him that tires were not on recall. Firestone, wilderness#at p23575r15. , #dot, made in canada.

Pe00 020; consumer was traveling about 40mph on highway and driver's side rear tire was flat. There was a lot of olay in the steering wheel. Tire was firestone wilderness #at p23575r15 #dot w-2.

Pe00020, original equipment on 2000, Explorer, tire size 235/75r15, dot 8xhl1ry489. Spare tire on a new vehicle still in stock. Had a bubble in the tread which caused tire to be very mushy and soft. The tread for spare tire separated before the tire was used.

Insured was traveling s on hwy 9 and she lost control of vehicle. Someone driving behind said they saw the right front go down and then driver lost control. Insured stated that it could be the firestone tires on the vehicle possible tire failure-firestone wilderness at 235/75r15. (claim# 11-3519-789).

Pe00 020; consumer stated that front driver's side tires are showing bubbles. He has contacted firestone. The tires are firestone #at p23575r15, no injuries.

Ford, Explorer, tire size p255/70r16, dot # vncu1px529. Consumer noticed tire was discolored, and possible tread failure. Replaced with goodyear tires. These tires are made in canada are known failures.

Firestone wilerness p255/70r16 rear tire blew out causing her to lose control and hit a curb and mailbox and then the other tire blew she thinks this might be due to the defective tires these tires are not included in the recall so far but we have inspected and confirmed the right rear tire did blow which caused insd to lose control. Replaced 2 firestone wilderness at tires p23575r15(vdhl) August 13, 2000, consumer seeking reimbursement under recall (00t-005). Cj.

The vehicles tires were replaced one month prior to recall notice, consumer request reimbursement (firestone wilderness at). Nlm.

Firestone: there was a recall on this vehicle for the tires and this car was involved in a roll-over the tires may have contributed to the accident. (claim# 52-2406-471).

Pe00-020: was traveling 67mph when without warning had heard firestone wilderness tire exploded. Tire tread had separated from tire on passenger's right rear. Wheel was damaged. Had 2,600 miles on vehicle. Changed the tire & went to firestone first. Could not help. Went to Ford dealership & had tire exchanged. Firestone wilderness tire were originals, size p235/75r15.

Pe00020; tire tread separation: tire on the rear passenger's side bubbled and split. Tire size p25570r16, original tire equipment. Tire was taken to a tire dealership. Tire was replaced with a new wilderness tire at owner's expense. Owner has replaced all tires with kelly tires. Please provide any further information and dot# if possible. Please send any info available on this vehicle rolling due to tire blowouts. Also anything availbale from firestone wilderness tires. Vehicel was on freeway tire blew out and vehicle rolled both passengers at casa grande hospitla with injuries no other vehicle involved. (claim# 03-3158-203).

Left rear blowout at 75mph. 10:30am 1m north casa grande, az rt. I10 overturn 1 1/2 times. Ford Explorer XLT 2000 new at 416 miles. Totaled. Escaped thru rear gate. State farm insurance. ( dot number: tire size: p235/75 r1 ).

On June 12,2000 I was traveling home from dallas to pearland. The weather was clear no rain, cement road in good condition. My right front tire thread separated from the rim with no warning. Both sidewalls were still intact on rim. The dealership stated the tires and rim where not covered under warranty. The firestone dealership was reluctant to replace the tire with no cost. Eventually the manager could not find any reason to cause the tire to separate and replaced it still charging me for balance and valve stem. He refused to say it was a defective tire but listed unknown reason for failure. It is only because of previous extensive driving classes (police officer training) is why I did not have a wreck and was able to control my vehicle. On the news is a lot of reports of failures of these same tires. Both Ford and firestone refuse to exchange my tires for safe tires and I cannot afford to change out new tires on a new vehicle. We understand the national highway safety traffic administrations is investigating if the firestone tires on Explorers are defective. Fatality involved firestone wilderness 235/75r15 # 8xhl 1py Apr trailmark p235/75r15 dot # pj. (claim# 03-3155-368).
