The air conditioner stopped sending out cool air after a long drive back in February 2018 it then started smelling like exhaust in the vehicle for several days later until it was confirmed with my husband who also smelled it, I took it in to the dealer, they had already performed the recall inspection and this time did an additional step in patching. Currently the car ventilation when ac or heater is turned off when driving blows out warm air and there is still a light smell of exhaust in the vehicle that was recently noticed after a month after the additional patching. We now realize back in July 2017 we also took the car in for the same reason the air conditioner stopped working after a long drive out of the city, we do not remember there being a smell of exhaust then like there is now.
Since my purchase of my 2013 in December of 2016, I've always noticed a strange odor inside the vehicle. I first thought this was normal and now after my mom called me about the issues with the Ford Explorers, I've really been paying more attention to the smell. Sometimes I just let my windows down some while driving. And with the growing concern about the police officers vehicles what about us civilians? my grandkids and myself and kids ride in my Ford Explorer daily. Are we not worth protecting by Ford issuing a recall to ensure all vehicle owners and their families are safe? I will be getting my vehicle checked as well as my family to make sure we are safe not just police officers. I have noticed this odor when my Explorer has been idling with the air conditioning on and when the vehicle is in motion. Also I've been having headaches but not sure if the odor is the cause. The below date is just one time. Not sure of other exact dates due to thinking the smell was a normal smell.
Car has sulfur smell when using air conditioning. I have had my car for 2 years and have complained about problem and apparently I am not the only one.
I purchased my used 2013 Ford Explorer from ken garff Ford in st. George utah in February 2017. At first I noticed a smell, similar to a propane smell, coming from the heating system. Then I noticed it was really bad when the car was idling. Then it got worse when the weather warmed up and I used the air conditioning. We had to roll the windows down to air it out. It was making me sick. It seems to be the worse when it is accelerating and when it is idling. I took it to ken garff Ford in st. George utah and they replaced some of the exhaust system. They said they replaced the same parts that they had replaced for the entire law enforcement Explorers in our county (washington county, ut) it cost me over 500 dollars. It did not fix it. It seemed to be worse. They have now ordered more parts and said it will cost me over 500 dollars again. That's over $1,000 so far. And over the last six month I have had headaches almost every day. I am known to have migraines but this is now extreme. My doctor cannot understand why I was now having so many headaches and many more migraines. Now that I know the Explorer has fume issues I believe it is the fumes from the car that are causing the headaches and make me feel sick so often. I finally researched online if the repairs are working and it seems that fixing it the way Ford has told the dealers to fix it that the response is that it does not solve the problem. I agree having put money into it already and it actually seems worse. I do not want to sink more money into it and I feel that I should not have to pay for the repairs if the repairs do work. Also my job requires that I travel a lot and I usually put over 20,000 a year on my vehicles. I can not continue to drive the car and to feel so sick when I do. Please advice. Climate control system. There is a pungent odor coming from the system at various times, usually when the air conditioner is operating. This has been an ongoing issue and the source has not been identified. The engine will begin running rough at idle, both in drive and park, as though it were going to stall. The problem was checked and compared to another new vehicle, which had not been purchased, and identified as being "normal". Most recently both catalytic converters failed. They were replaced and it does not appear to have corrected any other issue.
We experience noxious fumes in the cabin when either the heater or air conditioner are on. It smells like exhaust or industrial chemicals or rotten eggs (hard to describe). Our local Ford dealership claimed it came from a leaking water pump (which they replaced under warranty) that saturated the under engine cover due to a leaking water pump. Driving in the winter actually requires we crack several windows and sometimes only use the butt warmers as it's too toxic smelling. The local dealership even acknowledged the smell, but again attributed to the leaking coolant. It's particularly worse when the system is in the recirculating mode. Sitting idle at a light or waiting for someone with the system on is probably the worst, particularly when in recirculating mode.
There is an exhaust smell (like burnt hair) inside the cabin when the car accelerates, especially a hard acceleration and often when the air conditioning is on. Certified dealer cannot identify cause of issue or how it occurs.
In sept 2016 I pulled out of the dentist and blacked out. I smelled a weird smell coming from the air conditioning. Ski have been sick and out of work since. I have been to many doctors and all tests come back negative. I drive the car but have to stop many times and get out because I feel lightheaded and "out of it". My sons also get nauseous and "don't feel well" in the car. My boyfriend drove it the other day and got out saying he didn't feel well and was really tired. I really believe this car has been my cause of being so sick and out of work for so long. It happens when I'' driving it. . . I stop and get out of the car and after a little bit I feel better.
When the air conditioner is set to fresh air and not recirculate, exhaust fumes enter the passenger cabin under hard acceleration. This can be reproduced every time by a slow speed of 5 miles and then hard acceleration until speed limit. This then leaves the cabin full of strong exhaust fumes. On long road trips we often have headaches that we believe is caused by this even without hard acceleration.
I have taken my 2013 Explorer into the dealer ship twice the first time I took my car in I told them their was some thing wrong with the ideal. When I'm sitting with it idaling it feels like the car wants to die. Did not fix it then was still under warranty. Took it back in a few months later complaining of the same thing the dealership said it was my throttle body it would cost me 450. 00 to fix it. That it should of been done the first time. Second complaint is that when the out side air is off and have the heater/air conditioning on having to accelerate up a hill or anything that requires to step on the gas we get a lot of fumes into the car. Having to roll the down the windows to get the fumes out.
Carbon monoxide smell is coming out of vents when a/c is used. It usually starts happening after the car is warmed up. The smell is so strong I often have to turn off air conditioning and roll down the windows to allow the air to be cleared out. Often get headaches from this smell.
I bought car may 3013 started smelling exhaust inside the vehicle and kept asking the dealer to please check it out and asked if there were any other complaints for the same. They acted as though I was crazy never checked it out and I requested it every time took it in for oil and tire rotation. After a while when I would be in the vehicle and excelerate it would smell as though some one dumped a can of gas in the back of the car. When took in the last time dealer I bought it from told me would cost me too much to fix as it was a big job just don't use your real air conditioner. We live in florida and my grandchildren ride with me that is not an option. The fumes happened when exceleration at low and higher speeds not during same circumstances. The last time where as it had been on the open highway I was simply doing a left turn and this time the exhaust was in the front passenger seat area. This happened for the last four years I reported to Ford customer service the gave me claim number have not heard back. Case number is cas10895619.
Exhaust gas entering the cabin during hard acceleration or when driving at sustained highway speeds. Appears to be related to rear air conditioning sucking air from underneath rear of car!.
Exhaust fumes entering the passenger compartment. Vehicle in motion with the air conditioner on. The vehicle was taken to a Ford dealership for repair. The dealer made a repair that was going to fix the problem but it made it worst. I took the vehicle back and they advised that they are waiting for Ford engineers to figure out the problem. Its been over two years now.
Gas/exhaust smell while driving. This smell is coming out of the heating and air condition vents while driving. Make you nauseous.
I purchased my vehicle from the jennings anderson Ford dealer. It had around 17,000 miles on it. Shortly after I vehicle, I brought it in because the exhaust fumes are being sucked into the vehicle when I accelerate such as getting on the freeway. David savinich (service adviser) told me that Ford was aware of the problem and they had a fix for it. They installed their fix but it is still sucking in exhaust fumes. I talked to jeff asher (service dept manager) and I asked him whether Ford had a fix for it. I was told no. I asked jeff to call me if there was a fix. It has been over a year and their is still no repair. I get a bad headache every time I get on the freeway. It is so bad that it also makes me nauseated. I am unable to use the air conditioner recirculatation in the car.
Under strain with air conditioning in recycle mode the exhaust fumes fill the cabin of the vehicle. In may 2016 the dealer preformed TSB 14. 0130 reprogramming of the hvac module. Replaced air extractors and rear fender mouldings. Retested it and said it was ok. After doing their repair it did help some but it has not solved the problem.
My air conditioner just stops working will driving. I have taked to the Ford delership over 5 times. They say it works fine each time I go. Finally one day when it was out I drove up to Ford and made the service manager go for a ride with me. He agreed the ac was not working. It is currently at the service department and being fixed, hopefully!.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, the contact noticed smoke seeping through the air vents inside the vehicle. The dealer stated that a rock fractured the air conditioner condenser. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. The VIN was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 19,000.
Every time I give an 'open throttle', or hard acceleration on my vehicle there is a foul smell that enters the cabin via the air condition vents. I had the issue looked into by my Ford dealer after the problem started. The dealer acted like they have never heard of the complaint but after reading various threads on the internet it appears a lot of other people have had the same issue. After some research I've learned that the smell is actually exhaust fumes entering the cabin. Ford acknowledges the issue but states the amount of exhaust fumes are not enough to become toxic. I am very concerned of this issue and Ford needs to fix the problem.
Under medium to hard acceleration a strong sulfur smell enters the cabin through the air conditioning vents and it smells very bad. Family of four and concerned about what we are all breathing in. Contacted Ford and they have confirmed it and they don't understand where it is coming from and refused to fix it. This is the only car I have ever driven where there is this type of smell coming from ac under acceleration. Smell comes through for about 30 seconds and then stops. Stinks up the car until we roll down the windows to get the bad air out. Embarrassing when we have other people in the car. I know I am not the only person experiencing this problem. . Read more...
We leased a 2013 Ford Explorer in October of 2012. Within about a month, we began smelling exhaust inside the car. I brought my car into a dealership in new york, who told me that I was not using the air conditioning properly. So, I thought the exhaust was getting inside the car because of something I was doing. I now know that lots of people are having this problem. I have now brought my car back into a dealership in florida. The exhaust problem is getting worse, and I am nervous for my family. I had the car checked, and carbon monoxide was found inside the car.
