2 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/10/2020

Anytime I drive this vehicle in rain or wet roads the main belt slips and squeals. The result is major loss of power on many occasions. My dash lights up like a christmas tree, I lose power to steering, wipers, fans, etc. The belt slipping is causing the alternator not to function which in turns causes loss of power. It's always when it's wet which is even scarier bc I have lost steering and engine power. This happens on any roads while the engine is under a load.

3 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2020 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/02/2020

The vehicle was driving on a local highway when the message service charge system now. The battery icon appeared briefly on the dashboard. I continued driving and the same message reappeared every 5 minutes. The dealer told me they did not recognize the message, and to bring the vehicle in for service soon. They ran a diagnostic and determined it needed a new alternator. The vehicle is seven months old and has less than 15,000 miles. It is still in for service as the dealer did not have a replacement alternator in stock.

4 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/09/2019

Driving 55mph on I-94 last night in a steady rain and check battery message came up in the left ip display. Within a few seconds I lost the power steering, then the center console entertainment/info screen, then the instrument cluster went black with the headlights and windshield wipers which were on highest setting slowed but continued to operate only while in the highest setting. This scenario continued off and on for the next 30 miles with intermittent electronic steering failure, internal ip and console screen failure and exterior lighting failures. We pulled over each time and within a varied amount of time from a few seconds to a few minutes, a sound similar to a squealing belt would be heard and the system would "reboot" and all functioning would be restored for a limited time. We limped the vehicle home over the course of the next hour and a half for 35 miles as I was not leaving the car on the side of the freeway or in detroit if I could safely avoid it. This morning (Sunday) I tested the battery and had the battery and alternator tested under load at an auto parts store and both were within normal parameters. Belt looked good with visual inspection and 1 hour of idle and drive time close to home in damp puddling roads could not get any adverse symptoms to reappear. It will go to the Ford service department at our local dealer tomorrow for a thorough inspection. This is my wife's daily driver and if no issue can be found we will be replacing the car as she would have been in extreme danger without steering, lights and ip, especially on a Saturday night driving through the city of detroit's I-94 expressway.

7 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2005 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/25/2017

While driving down the interstate at night my vehicles dashboard began to act erratic. Then the battery gauge rapidly dropped into the red zone. Within about 3 miles I lost my interior power, headlights, taillights, and signals including my hazard lights. When limping off the interstate my truck had lost enough power to where it died out. Once at the dealership it was found that the alternator fried out causing a surge that wiped out the pcm and utility cluster all without warning.

9 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2008 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/01/2014

4/1- a couple days before 4/1, the check engine light came on. On 4/1, I was driving the car on a side street and it shut off on me, without warning. I got it towed to a dealer near by and was told it was a faulty alternator. Dealer changed it. . . 4/10 - the wrench and the check engine lights came on the dashboard. I took it back to the dealer to have it checked. The dealer was very passive of the situation - but ultimately, he said they were old codes that needed to be cleared from the computer. He cleared them and all was suppose to be well. 4/17 - my husband and I were out running errands, when again the wrench and the check engine light came on at the same time. Moments later, the car shut off on us while we were driving in the middle on the street. Luckily we were able to get it out of the middle of the road. We called the dealer and arranged to have them check it out. We managed to get the car started and drove it to the dealer. 4/24 - the dealer told us that the pcm was busted - and that alot of 2008 Explorers were having this issue. Unfortunately, Ford did not have the part available anywhere and we would have to wait until August 2014 in order to get the part fixed. Right now, our car is sitting at the dealer - not working. Ford has done nothing to compensate or to alleviate the mental and financial stress of not having car has done.

Failure Date: 03/15/2013

While driving along at a medium speed in March 2013, the dashboard lit up like a christmas tree with all the warning lights blinking from the low gas to the check engine and everything in between. Luckily I was not in heavy traffic or bad weather because this scared the heck out of me when it occurred. The engine was not laboring and appeared to be operating correctly except for the light show and audible alarms going off in the dashboard. The alarms continued going off as I tried to get the car back home. When I started the car the next morning to take it to my mechanic, no alarms were active. The mechanic took a couple of hours before they finally were able to replicate the problem. In the end, they replaced my alternator and battery at a cost of about $700. Everything has been find until yesterday when then warning light show/alarms recurred. It's only been 3 months since the first incident. It will go back to my mechanic tomorrow. Luckily its still under their warranty.

15 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/30/2008

Purchased a 2002 Ford exp eddie bauer ed used with 35,000 miles. Transmission had to be repaired within 3 weeks due to 4wd malfunction covered by warranty. Passenger side window motor assembly has been replaced once, and window regulator has been replaced once, and is in need of a second replacement. Took to local dealership and was told window was not meant to be lowered halfway. The rear hatch has also cracked completely down from window to lower panel. Dealership will not acknowledge issues with this occurring, but upon further research have found this to be a common problem with this vehicle make and model. Overdrive light blinks continuously and dealership reports it to be a malfunctioning electrical switch repair cost at around $400. Have continued to drive vehicle, but will no longer drive vehicle after discovering that this is a precursor to transmission failure. May possibly trade-in this vehicle and lose monetary value for private sale. Will not be responsible for selling this vehicle to a private party and risk injury to next owner. Shame on Ford for not taking care of their customers.

Now 6 months after purchase the check engine and o/d light come on unexpectantly. Within 1 week of lights coming on car stops on me unexpectantly. When taken to a repair shop for I am told I need a new alternator and a rebuilt transmission as the SUV slips out of 2nd and 5th gears. I didn't purchase an extended warranty due to thinking it was still under original warranty and just purchased. Each time I have been able to pull over safely and start the vehicle again. It has happened 5 times in the last 5 months. Then the dealership replaced the alternator, only for this to happen again 2 times after that. Yesterday the dealership installed a dvr recording device. Clearly, this is very dangerous.
