6 Ignition Switch problem of the 2008 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/22/2015

When moving the interior lights come on. Went to Ford dealer where purchased recently to see if there was recall for ignition switch problems. Test drove with a tech to show problem of ignition switch causing the interior lights to come on while car is being driven. While test driving and moving the ignition switch, the interior lights did come on. On the third example, the car cut off. The car did not lock up, but the car had to be shifted into neutral and restarted. The lights coming on is a problem when driving at night and all of a sudden the interior is lighted and exterior and roads are dark. My brother had a 2008 Explorer that he had recently traded in on a new car. When talking with him, he said he had a similar problem with the lights, but only had 80,000 miles on his 2008 Explorer. Before someone gets hurt as in other car types recently, I think this should be investigated. The dealership did not take the problem seriously and recommended I get the switch changed as it had not happened to any of their other customers. I will get the switch changed, but it does not sound like the switches last that long.

7 Ignition Switch problem of the 2008 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/16/2014

Driving at night and all of the sudden. . . All the interior lights came on. . . Then went back off shortly after they came on. . . Caused a glare in the rear view mirror. . . It's now happened multiple times and I have read about hundreds of complaints for the same issue. . . Some of them worse due to the automatic seats that move back when the ignition switched off. . . Which means people's seats are moving backward while the vehicle is in motion. . . To temporary fix this issue costs $200. . . . I feel that it's a safety concern and a recall needs to be issued.

8 Ignition Switch problem of the 2008 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/17/2014

While driving along at any speed , all of a sudden the interior lights come on, seat moves all the way back, I assume the problem is in the ignition switch area as I push the ignition in and the seat resets and light goes off, the problem will come and go. Why is there no recall ? I'am looking for the dealership to fix problem at no cost due to ignition problem not caused by operator or owner. I have contacted Ford but they just blew me off. . Ford motor company cas-5500226-z2l2l7 crm:08369000000361 looked online and several hundred people have same problem this is my wife vehicle.

9 Ignition Switch problem of the 2007 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/14/2014

Drivers seat moved back and forth and interior lights came on while driving at various speeds, including highway speeds. First occurrence at 40000mi. Started out happening only occasionally, then began more frequently. Noticed sometimes occurred when going over a bump. Finally able to recreate the event at Ford with engine running in park by touching the keys. Keys are a standard key set, not a heavy ring of keys. Ford repair notes: confirmed complaint - ran electrical test - no codes stored - checked all grounds and connections - contacted techline - ran diagnostics per techline - found internal failure in ignition switch due to worn push pin - removed and replaced ignition switch and retested part replaced 1 au5z*11582*b cylinder ignition repair solved the issue. Made at 61000mi the first Ford I went to for this problem was in sevierville, TN. I paid for diagnostics, but no codes. I expressed concern that the problem was related to the ignition since I had seen a similar recall on gm vehicles. Ford said would charge labor time to recreate the problem. I was then able to recreate problem in lot by touching keys. I alerted service desk and waited 20 min with engine running for a technician to come and witness the problem. They finally sent the girl that works the service counter who said turn it off and we will pull it into the bay and have a technician try to recreate it in the morning, confirming they would charge labor time to recreate the problem. She was very rude and told me no technician was going to come out and that I could leave the car or not, then stormed inside. I left without the problem resolved and made an appt. At the next closest dealership 40 miles away newport, TN. I was able to recreate the problem for the technician at the newport dealership. They were very nice and professional and performed the ignition repair quickly.

10 Ignition Switch problem of the 2007 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

Dome lights do not turn off unless the ignition switch is in exactly the right spot. This varies each time I start the car. Sometimes the lights come on while driving. Could reduce visibility at night.

11 Ignition Switch problem of the 2007 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/11/2013

The ignition switch is on the steering column. My knee touched the key in the ignition switch and the engine stopped running. All power,(steering, brakes, forward motion), were immediately lost. This has happened on numerous occasions since then. There are other issues, which all seem to be related to the ignition switch. My local dealer said there are no tech bulletins or recalls related to this issue.

12 Ignition Switch problem of the 2008 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/14/2013

When in drive and moving and going over a bump, the power seat goes into the position it would be as if no key in ignition (goes all the way back) and the overhead light goes on. Situation is exascerbated if there are items on the ignition key chain. Situation can be initiated by simply jiggling the key in the ignition. My wife cannot drive the vehicle, because if occurs, moves her so that she does not reach gas or brake pedal while vehicle in motion. Informed tasca Ford in cranston, ri of situation and they said no recall or TSB. Many reports of exactly the same on the internet, and problem appears to be faulty ignition switch.

13 Ignition Switch problem of the 2008 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/01/2012

The exterior and interior dome lights turn on and off while driving. First few incidents were spread apart however the problem has progressed now to almost every other minute while driving. Driving over bumps, dips in road, etc. Triggers the event. I have narrowed it down to any "jiggle" of the key causes the lights to go on and off. Ford wants $250-$500 to fix. Google the problem and you will find hundreds of others with this same problem, ignition switch is faulty. This is extremely unsafe especially when the lights come on at night,it can be startling and prevents me from seeing out of my mirrors because the light reflects off of it. Also I have seen cars swerve on occasion when they are beside my car as the exterior lights under the mirrors turn on and I assume catching them off guard. I am always afraid I might get pulled over as it looks like I am sending out an s. O. S. Distress call with my lights flashing on an off constantly. I have never had more than just the key and fob on the key ring same as it was the day I bought it new, I cannot stand a ring full of keys so to say that excessive weight caused the problem is not true in my case and of course this problem surfaced only a couple thousand miles out of the warranty. Ford also has a TSB out on this issue as it is a common complaint.

Failure Date: 01/28/2010

I was left stranded at a gas station at night, if that isn't dangerous than I don't know what is. I put my key in the ignition and it would not budge. I had my car towed to the Ford dealer and they fixed the ignition lock cylinder but cost alot of money and from what I read alot of people have this problem and even when fixed it still happening to people! we need help, no person should be left stranded like I was it was scary to say the least.

23 Ignition Switch problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/10/2002

Last summer (July 2002) during a military move from GA to az I noticed that my windshield had a large piece of glass missing on the outter right edge that you could not see until you actually got right up on the windshield. Part of it was visible to and part of it was hidden behind the rubber seal that is around the windshield. This windshield was actually installed with this piece missing from it when the vehicle was built and sent to the dealership. Also, the rear glass hatch, gas shock twisted from its original position and caused the window to be off center by about an inch or more. After fixing it three times it had to be replaced. Both of these problems (the windshield and the gas shock) have been fixed by my local dealership and thus far have held up. There are numerous other complaints that I have on my vehicle that include the elecrical system not functioning properly. When you turn the truck on sometimes all the dashboard lights stay on as well as the interior lights and you have to shut the truck down and back on several times in order for them to go out. The truck will sometimes stall at take off or will lurch while shifiting into a higher gear and has totally shut down while driving down the road on a few occasions. The trim paint on the doors, both front and passenger has faded there are rusted spots in the paint on the top of the vehicle, and the hood has a very bad orange peel effect on it with grit in the paint. The left rear speaker has busted and the panel on the rear hatch below has broken loose as well as one of the plastic bracket covers on the back of the passenger seats. Pe04045. Pco.

26 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/04/1999

Key would not turn on ignition. Car towed on flatbed truck to dealer in traverse city michigan. I regard this as a serious safety issue. We don't want cars failing to start and needing to be dragged across pavement due to locked 4 wheel drive. If this happened at night, on a bridge, etc. , could cause major accidents, or abductions. I am disallusioned that an ignition switch could fail after 2300 miles. Tow trucjk operator said he had towed three new Ford products in a 2 week span to dealer with same ignition switch failure. I would like this investigated and a safety recall issued if facts warrant, thank you.
