3 Battery problem of the 2012 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/02/2011

First instance (2 months after I bought XLT model - bought late September 2011), in December 2011, electrical system was draining my battery causing my touch to go out, my engine light to go off, etc. Now, second instance (March 31, 2012), driving an hour to a destination, turned off the car for 10 minutes, got back in the car, the car stalled and locked the steering wheel. After talking to the service department, they told me if I got the car running, that it was safe to drive. Finally got the car turned on for the drive back, half way back, the rpms were revving and then the car was sucking back, almost home and the cars power steering started to go out and it was stalling at every light. Took into Ford dealership, they are still trying to figure out what the problem is and think it is a short somewhere in the system where they can't find it. I do not feel safe driving this car right now.

Failure Date: 03/01/2009

Ford special message #15773 my 2006 Explorer has twice tried to start itself, running the battery down so low that a vehicle charge was not sufficient. Ford dealer stated they were completely unaware of the problem, until I showed them the special message no. They still are not willing to fix the vehicle as noted in the message.

5 Battery problem of the 2005 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/23/2008

Vehicle had a dead battery roughly 6 months ago. Dealer replaced battery under warranty, but did no other diagnostics on the vehicle. If the vehicle is not driven every day, the battery drains down, and now the battery will not charge at all. Now my vehicle is out of warranty coverage, and the dealer will not diagnose the charging system problem. This vehicle is completely unreliable, and the charging system failure is just one of my many complaints about this vehicle.

The contact owns a 2003 Ford Explorer. While driving at an unknown speed, the warning indicator for the doors illuminated on the instrument panel and would not dim. The vehicle was driven to the dealer and they stated that there were no defects. The failure persisted over the next few months. The contact allowed the vehicle to remain parked for a couple of days and was unable to restart the vehicle. The battery was replaced and the vehicle was able to be driven again; however, it began to stall shortly afterwards. The vehicle has not been repaired. The dealer and manufacturer have not been notified. The current mileage was 110,000 and failure mileage was 100,000.

9 Battery problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/22/2007

Hello, I have a 2004 Ford Explorer truck with a crack on the back of the hatch door. I don't know where this crack came from. I contacted the Ford company about this issue but since my vehicle is no longer under warranty they aren't willing to help. I first notice the crack about a year ago. When I contacted Ford to find out if this was a recall they said no. Recently I have been noticing that a lot of the Ford Explorer trucks I see all have a crack on the same portion of the truck. I spoke to another individual with a Ford Explorer and she doesn't know where the crack on the back of her truck came from either. We think this maybe a recall issue. I just started writing down the license plate numbers of the various Explorer trucks I see with the same or similar crack on the back hatch. Although I only have six tag numbers right now, I know that their are many more trucks with this problem. I seen more trucks but at the time I wasn't documenting the license plate numbers. There was also a recall on the hatch window in 2003 for the Ford Explorer truck. In 2007, I had the same issue as the 2003 recall on my 2004 vehicle but was told I had to pay to get it fixed myself because there wasn't a recall reported for 2004. Although it was a year later. It is obvious that the issue wasn't resolved because I had the same problem. There is also a break light switch problem. This issue has your break lights randomly coming on although the vehicle is turned off. Which drains the battery and causes you to have to get the break switch fixed and a new battery. Please help me. I had no luck with the Ford motor company in resolving these issues.

10 Battery problem of the 2006 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/01/2006

(1) I have owned my 2006 Ford Explorer for one year and four months. There are approximately 21,000 miles currently on it. It has had a lunging problem starting weeks after I purchased it. I have taken it into two separate Ford dealers in attempts to have it fixed for a total of six times. They have attempted to update the computer on two separate occasions. Each time it is fixed for a couple of weeks up to a couple of months, however, the clunking and jerking once again show. I believe that they unplug the battery each time it is taken in, allowing the computer to "forget" its adaptive learning. (2) when I take off from a stop it hesitates and then slams into gear causing the vehicle to accelerate unpredictably. Furthermore, when stopping it feels like it is freewheeling in between first and second gear with an abrupt stop and a jerk that causes a violent jerking of the vehicle. The feeling it provides is one of being rearended. (3) the only thing that has been done is to reprogram the computer and unhooking the battery so the computer forgets its adaptive learning. This is a quick fix for Ford and does not solve the problem.

11 Battery problem of the 2006 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/05/2006

On 12/10/05, I purchased a new 2006 Ford Explorer. Yesterday, for the fifth time, the vehicle has not been able to start. I brought it in to Ford on 01/11/06, they replaced the battery and told me it would not happen again. It happened again last night.

12 Battery problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/13/2005

At about 6:00 pm on Saturday 13 Aug 2005 I went into my garage to get something and noticed it was full of smoke. I saw smoke coming from under the hood of my 1998 Ford Explorer. When I raised the hood, flames rolled from beneath it. I immediately extinguished the fire and then disconnected the negative battery terminal. My wife had already called 911 by this time. The fire fighters determined the source of the electrical fire to be a connector on the brake master cylinder. I was very lucky to have caught the fire in time. If this had happened when we were sleeping we might not be alive now. I have not received a notice of recall for this. I am sending the vehicle to the dealership on Monday, if this is not a recall part I will have to pay for the repairs. I think that people should know about this problem and probably not park their Ford in the garage.

13 Battery problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/30/2005

The vehicle caught on fire. The fire department checked it and concluded fire came from driver's front side around the battery. This happened on June 30, 2005. The vehicle was parked about 6 or 7 hours before it caught in fire. Contacted Ford, they sent a letter saying sorry, but they didn't have any recalls on this type of vehicle.

14 Battery problem of the 1999 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/27/2005

Contact states the inside lights, windshield wipers, and the power windows would not work. Also, the outside light would not go off when the vehicle was shut off, causing the battery to run down. There was a recall on this vehicle regarding the generic electric module, but this specific vehicle does not fall under this recall campaign.

15 Battery problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/05/2005

5-5-05 3:30 a. M. Licking county fire department was called due to fire 0f my 1998 Ford exployer. It had set for two days before the fire. Its not clear what caused the fire. Co-counsel, lieff cabraser representing owners of Ford vechicles claims Ford speed control deactivation switches. Also known as "brake pressure switch," powered by the battery and is mounted above flamable flammable reservoires of brake fluid. If certain conditions occur, a fire can break out, even when the engine had been turned off and, in some cases, idle for days.

16 Battery problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/23/2004

Complete failure of the gauge pod, radio, interior lights, power windows at 2,300 miles. No speedometer, odometer, tach, fuel gauge, temp, oil, battery, radio (nothing in the dashboard functions except the airbag light). Ford dealer in allentown PA was very rude and went out of their way to not work in a timely manner and keep us in the dark. Drove vehicle to texas (with no gauges) to dealership where purchased. At the shop right now. Transmission also hesitates excessively between shifts.

17 Battery problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/02/2004

Several problems with this auto, it seems to be falling apart. The driver side seat belt no longer latches. We have to loop the driver side through the passenger side. It appears this is an issue with several of these models. This is a serious safety hazard and seat belts are mandatory by law. Is there anything being done? the left turn indicator has had electrical issues for years. It makes a zzzz sound and no longer works. I am also down to only one door that the key works on. That is the back lift. The door key had not worked on the driver side for years, then the passenger side went. I have the same heat problem the others are having. You either get full on heat and have to turn it on and off when it gets too hot or you get partial ac, always a little warm. Both the ac and heat has been serviced, the problem is in the switch somewhere. And now the reason I'm writing is I have major electrical problems. Fuses and solinoids have been looked at, there are no longer lights in the dash area. The lights on alarm (ding ding ding ding) remains on when the car is off, the keys out and the door shut which has drained my battery completly. I have jumped started it twice and now it sits in my driveway because it will cost a fortune to have the electrical looked at. If this is an issue with anyone else it should be reported to Ford. Not only can I no longer drive this car, it would be totally unsafe to use it. I need 4wheel drive just to get out of my driveway in winter and have no idea how I'm going to come up with the money for all these repairs. Please advise if there are any recalls that address these issues. The incident date I listed below is for the time the seatbelt started to fail completly. We were on a vacation trip!.

18 Battery problem of the 2003 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/04/2004

Aroiund 37,000 miles I started having electrical problems. Half of them go off when they should and half of them stay on which runs my battery down and I have to be jumped. Then around 40,000 mile I started hearing a lound whining noise from my rear end. The dealer said nothing was wrong. It is so loud you have to almost yell to talk to someone. Then at 47,000 miles my service engine light soon started coming on. It has something to do with the coolant area. I am afraid to take my vehicle out of town and I owe too much on it to trade it.

19 Battery problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/22/2003

1998 Ford Explorer eddie bauer model, caught on fire while parked in my garage at 4:00 am. Vehicle had not been driven since 5:30 pm previous evening. We were alerted by a smoke detector. Vehicle was total loss, garage & attic above garage badly damaged resulting in complete loss of our personal property stored there. Fire department report states that they think the fire started with the battery, which was original to the vehicle.

20 Battery problem of the 1996 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/23/2003

96 Ford Explorer: check engine light came on two weeks ago, one week later, battery stalled and required a jump, the power levels read normal. I checked the power distribution box and the fuses did not match owner's manual. Two parts shops advised this could trigger fire, or a device to malfunction. Per Ford owner's manual, airbag & atbs impacted. I replaced the fuses to match the owner's manual. Today, I took the car to a private shop, that worked on the electrical system earlier. The owner pulled an all data schema, which is quite different. How do I know which electrical schema is correct - the owner's manual, the other shops referred to, or all data? it makes a difference, 60a vs 30a fuses, different blank relays, etc. If the Ford manual is correct, and I follow the all data schema, it could trigger fire or malfunction. Vice versa, would be bad also. Either way, consumers should be alerted? either to incorrect electrics in the Ford manual, or to an incorrect all data schema used by mechanics? (I have asked Ford, also, for a reply. ) also - this is the second time in 6 months I have had issues with the check engine light, but no other symptoms. The first time, the mechanic replaced the cam sensor, and it eventually went off. He stated this warning light was insignificant, and referred only to emissions standards. (no visible emissions). I note that - per the owners manual again - this warning light can also be triggered by a monitoring, gps, or alarm device being installed in the vehicle. If I can find no other cause, how would I check for this, and do you have other records of this being the cause? the check engine light was also an issue, last spring. In April 02, the Ford dealer in orlando replaced the idle air control, and the valve assembly-thro. Check engine light was also an issue shortly after purchase; dealer replaced sensor assembly-egr, thermostat assembly. Is there an associated recall, or does this fit other pattern? thanks!.

21 Battery problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/14/2002

My 2002 Ford Explorer lxt, the door ajar light stays on and the dome light will stay on. Every once and a while the alarm will sound for no reason. This is a safety concern cause while driving at night and having the dome light turn on hinders your vision and could cause a traffic crash. Having the light stay on after you get out also drains the battery and causes problems when you go to start it up.
