39 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/20/2007

The transmission in my 2002 4wd Ford Explorer failed at 73,000 miles. I was traveling on a highway when the problem occurred. I was fortunate that the highway was empty at that time when the transmission failed. The problem occurred suddenly and I feel that my life could have been endangered if more automobiles were present on the highway I was traveling on. I read that sudden transmission failure is a very frequent occurrence among 2002 Ford Explorers and also read that Ford has not addressed the problem through any sort of safety recall procedure. When I called Ford to submit a patron complaint Ford confirmed that no safety recall had been issued.

41 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2006 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/01/2007

2006 Ford Explorer eddie bauer v-8 problems with transmission 3-4 months into ownership. The vehicle will jump into gear and will lunge forward. This happens frequently when coming to a stop. Also, when driving the vehicle it sometimes hesitates when shifting into gears and will "clunk" into gear. Last week I was taking my daughter and her friend to girl scouts and I pulled into traffic and attempted to accelerate and the vehicle would not shift in order to gain speed. The vehicle coming in my direction had to slam on his breaks to avoid hitting our vehicle. I have had the car to the dealership 5 times for this problem. They have re programmed the computer, replaced the solenoid pack, cleaned the valve body, and have cleared the memory in the pcm numerous times. Still no fix. . . . The delayed and harsh shifting is dangerous and someone is going to get seriously hurt as a result of it happening.

42 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2003 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/21/2006

: the contact stated the transmission failed while driving 30 mph. There was smoke coming from the rear of the vehicle and when the contact stopped to inspect the problem, leaking transmission was noticed. The contact owns a 2006 Ford Explorer. While driving 15 mph over a hill the vehicle automatically shifted from first to second gear when attempting to accelerate. When the vehicle was stopped the rpms increased and the vehicle jerked forward. The dealer was unable to duplicate the failure and could not repair it. The dealer reprogrammed the pcm three times at 10,016, 14881, and 17,037 miles. The current mileage is 17,207, and failure mileage was 8,869.

44 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/14/2006

2004 Ford Explorer purchased new, experienced transmission issues very quickly, hard engagement into reverse, clunking when downshifting, car lurches upon acceleration during a slow turn. I have had into dealership 5 times, beginning 1 year ago at 10,000 miles. Recall additive put in 1st time, 2nd time at 15,000 miles I lost the entire right rack and pinion while driving (would not steer to the right), they told me after repair, the transmission problem was also gone. 3rd time they put in a qt. Of transmission fluid. 4th time they replaced the solenoid. 5th time I requested buy-back. Their transmission tech guy went with me, he observed the problem; happened multiple times. They did not keep vehicle at that time. One month later after I had to keep calling back they took the vehicle in again and this time they added another additive and reprogrammed the pcm. They also had to repair the transmission indicator cable, it told me I was in reverse when I was in park. Picked up car today, they told me it shifted great now, and they would give me an extended 5 yr. 75,000 mile warranty. I declined, stated I wanted a buy-back. While driving home, the car once again clunked while decelerating and also while accelerating into a turn. I have filed with the bbb auto line.

45 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/05/2005

I bought a new 2002 Ford Explorer XLT. At 13,743 work order writes my complaints as "when going from park to drive trans clunks into gear and delay up shift a slow speeds". Dealer wrote on completed order form "cause: inop, correction:reprogram pcm, tech notes:roadtest trans engagement are harsh intermittent upshifts are firm, reprogram pcm. . . ". At 16,482 miles I again complained of clunking when shifting gears. Dealer said could not reproduce. At 24,613 I complained of trans clunking, and hesitating between shifting, again dealer said could not reproduce. At 35,976 miles they said there was a trans problem and rehauled (rebuilt) trans. At 50,295 miles car was hesitating again between shifts and clunking again. At stopping the car would jerk hard. They said the trans was bad again and rehauled it again. At 52,900 miles I was going to stop at a light, I thought something had happened to the brakes as the car would not slow any further (I was at a low speed at this time) for a few seconds and the brake pedal was shuttering and grinding. I immediately went to the dealer. The brakes twice more the way over felt strange but not as much as the first time. I would step on the gas, the car would hesitate before going faster and then would jerk forward. The rpm needle during this time would not move and then jump forward and then jump down. Three times on the way to the dealer the car would on it's own go slightly faster without me depressing the gas pedal further. This was on Saturday and I told the person writing up my paper work I could not except that they can not reproduce the problem, I need an answer since this is beyond being a time consuming problem and bother into a safety issue and I will not drive that car as is. Since there was no service manager there, I returned on Monday to talk with him. He was very nice and said they would look into it. But again, I am without my car for I do not know how long.

46 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/13/2005

The contact states his vehicle is stalled while driving. The first time this happened he took the vehicle to a local dealership, and the pcm was reprogrammed. The vehicle stalled three times on November 6, 2005. This happens with no warning lights. The vehicle was taken to the same dealership. They could not duplicate the problem, therefore, no repairs were made.

47 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/12/2005

2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4 control module goes out. There are hundreds of posts talking about this problem in forums. They remade the part 3 times because they knew they had a problem. I got stuck 2 miles on a beach with my wife and 2 children because the 4 wheel drive wouldn't kick in. There is no warning that it is broke until you try to use it.

48 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

4 wheel drive will not engage. Has been used one other time since I purchased the vehicle in 2002.

49 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2000 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/08/2005

Vehicle shifted from 2nd to 3rd harshly & od light started flashing. Did not do it every time it was driven. Called dealer and was told no recalls were listed on this type problem. Researched online and found a lot of complaints for 2000 Explorer with same problem. Transy mechanic repaired otv valve on transmission, resolved problem at my cost of $350. Something definitely wrong when this many reports are filed for same issue. Vehicle also weaves when speeds of 60 mph+ are reached as if would roll over. Shocks do not seem to be set right, very rough ride for such a luxury fitted out vehicle. First Ford I have ever owned in the 30+ years I have driven. . . Not happy. . . . I am selling. Give me a pontiac anyday! Ford, take ownership!.

50 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/04/2005

We bought this vehicle new in December of 2004 and it has been in the service dept. 8 times in the past 7 months for warranty repairs. It has been in 4 times for "hard cranks but no start", 4 times for rough idling, 1 time for an rpm problem (and in next week for a different one- it stays around 3 rpm after accelerating- I have to let off of the gas pedal for it to shift down), and it has been in for misc. Issues (whistling noise at front window, rattling console, etc. ). Each time it has been brought in for the mechanical problems, they "upgrade the pcm". I have contacted the dealership and I have contacted Ford directly numerous times for a repurchase because of my daughter's medical condition. It requires that she has reliable and safe transportation available at all times. The dealership knew about her needs when we bought this SUV. However, I keep getting shuttled back and forth between the dealership, (schimmer Ford, illinois) and Ford motor company. As a long time purchaser of Ford vehicles, I am really disappointed in the treatment that I am receiving.

54 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/08/2002

Module that controls the "control trac" 4-wheel drive system, failed at 3000 miles causing system to assume rear wheels were slipping. This caused the system to intermittently cycle the front wheel drive to assist even though rear tires were not losing traction. Owner complained to dealership 4 previous times of control trac problems, but dealership did not admit problem (told owner everything was fine with drive train) until 7000 miles when owner demanded a fix. Dealer then told owner that Ford knows about bad part, but that they have no idea when part will be available for repair. Currently, Explorer's 4x4 system is unpluged by dealer and is 2wd only. Dealer said they "don't know how much damage has already been done with 4000 miles of driving with bad system. " Ford says module for fix, is on backorder, and don't know when fix will be available.

55 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 1999 Ford Explorer
