2020 Ford Explorer st-about 55,000 miles. Dealer: preferred Ford in grand haven, mi. Issue is sometimes a multitude of warning lights would come on when traveling. They include shutting down the cruise control when in motion, the forward collision sensor would stop working, all wheel drive and hill assist lights would come on and stop working. This happens whether a short trip, 10-15 miles into town, or on a longer trip. Only way to potentially reset it was to stop, turn vehicle off for a minute or two and restart. Sometimes this worked and sometimes not. This is a safety hazard when operating on a roadway, usually at highway speeds, especially in winter road conditions or an occasional trip through the mountains to the southern states. Had a computer update, which cost $540. 00, still not solve it. Finally able to get into dealer with all warning lights activated. Dealer stated has to do with drivetrain. Now today (8-3-23), was advised by dealer a new Ford engineer internal service memo stated that is not the total fix. Total repairs cost is in/around $2000. 00. If Ford knows this is an issue and with the many Ford Explorers on the road today, this needs to be addressed so the consumer can have confidence in driving their vehicles.
The contact owns a 2021 Ford Explorer. The contact stated the adaptive cruise control and the collision avoidance systems would malfunction. The vehicle would suddenly deactivate the cruise control and the collision avoidance would detect a non existing object and stop the vehicle also turning to avoid the crash. The contact stated that while idle at a stop light when the vehicle suddenly accelerated rear-ending the vehicle in front. The air bags did not deploy however the acceleration did not reach high enough speeds for such response. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was not towed. There were no injuries or medical attention needed. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer however the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 10,000.

My 20 Ford Explorer has experienced twice where the speed limiter (acc adapted cruise control)-(ssr speed sign recognition) reads the speed limit signs incorrectly. Posted speed was 65 mph and it increase speed to 85 mph. I was driving thru columbus ohio, on i670 going ne, starting at the leonard Ave exit to i270 (to exit 10b sr161). I don't drive here often; the first time was Feb 23 & then March 16 (photos attached) in the same exact location. On both occasions, the speed sign (speed sign recognition) on the dash read 85 mph for at least 3 miles before correcting itself to the posted 65 mph speed limit. On Feb. 23rd, I was driving approx. 65mph with the acc set. The car accelerated quickly and not realizing at first what was happening, I pressed the brake to slow down (I was going over 75mph). The icon on the dash (ssr) read 85 mph which is 20 mph over the posted speed limit. The second time when the car sped up, it slowed abruptly due to a car crossing in front of me (within the 4 car following gap setting). Both times I had the cruise set (acc) around 69 mph and the car speed increased or tried to, to 85 mph before realized what it was doing. Either time I could have caused an accident or been cited for speeding. I have video of the incident if needed. Why I'm submitting this to you. . . I called my service department and it was suggested by them to check my exterior sensors and clean them (wash my car) and contact Ford corporate. I contacted Ford corp. Via the 800#, I was instructed to call my service department to have the car looked at. I also contacted Ford via their facebook site. They requested personal/privy information to be sent thru the social media site but wouldn't give me a secure email to submit to. So I'm at a loss to who can help resolve this issue.
Engine dies when driving with cruise control operating and heading down slight hill at speed of around 35 mph. Cruise is designed to maintain driving speed going down the hill (up or down hill for that matter). The tachometer indicates a slowing of engine rpm. At higher speeds, the slowing of rpm does not fall too low. However, at the slower speed around 35mph, the rpm drops below 500 rpm and the engine stalls. I lose power steering and breaks. I have a difficult time steering and breaking. This is a safety problem on a curve or if a red light is ahead. I can't steer the car on the curve. I may not be able to stop the car at the traffic light and end up in an intersection and be hit by vehicles with a green light. I may hit a car in front of me that has stopped at a light or stop sign. I may not be able to stop for a pedestrian crossing at the intersection (with the light). I may not be able to avoid a child . . . Who darts into the roadway. This is a problem for many owners of the 2004 Explorer. There are many complaints about it on the web. It is a problem that has been noted for years. I complained about it to dealers several times. Dealers dismissed it as nothing can be found, replicated or just not a problem. It is time to recalll the vehicle to fix this safety problem. This is an ongoing problem. I try to avoid using cruise control control at the 35mph range. It seems ok at highway speeds. The last of many instances was in November 2020. The problem first happened when there about 30,000 miles on the car.

Cruise control can not be disabled by pressing brake pedal. Requires passing steering wheel button to turn off. Also "pre-collision assist not available" message comes on dash every time vehicle is started.
Stepped on the gas pedal to accelerate and vehicle kept accelerating after removing foot from pedal. Had foot on brake with tires locking up and engine was still revving up. The floor mats were not in the way and cruise control was not activated.

Stepped on the gas pedal to accelerate and vehicle kept accelerating after removing foot from pedal. It did this 3 times within 10 minutes. The floor mats were not in the way and cruise control was not activated.
Cruise control was off. I was downhill on a snowy road and the tachometer went to 4000 rpm and my car started to skid. The cruise control acted as if it was on and downshifted. I pressed the gas pedal to gain control.

Tl-the contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the cruise control while travelling on the highway would suddenly disengage on it's own without the contact directing it to do. This would cause the vehicle to brake on it's own and swerve from side to side. The dealer sayville Ford 5686 sunrise hwy, sayville, NY 11782 (855) 561-1191. They stated that the leasing mileage limit was exceeded and they would not cover the costs. The manufacturer stated the same that the leasing mileage limit was exceeded. The contact also mentioned the battery exploded and the dealer dismissed his concerns and stated again it was not covered by a warranty. The failure mileage was 50,000. Tf.
Three different times in motion on the highway sudden acceleration occurred while cruise control was engaged or while beginning to start cruise control at an accessive rate of speed.
In 2004 Ford Explorer with v8, the cruise control turns off engine when traveling 35~45 mph and going down a hill or decline. This affects power steering and brakes making it difficult to control and slow down the vehicle. This has happened repeatedly for the past 10 years, so I am used to this defect. My workaround is to put the vehicle in neutral and restart the vehicle and then continue.
1) abs, brake, and wrench failure lights flashed on for about 3 seconds and turned off when decelerating with cruise control from 55 mph to 45 mph zones at courland, va. Vehicle manual provides no guidance on this failure mode; only warning lights turn on and continue flashing, reduce speed and take vehicle to nearest service provider and warning lights turn on and stay on, stop driving immediately and have vehicle towed to nearest service provider. 2) approximately ten minutes later, driver began applying brakes to disengage cruise control and slow from 60 mph to 35 mph school zone speed about 50 to 60 m before school zone warning sign at capron elementary, va, on state highway 58. 3) driver checked speed upon entering school zone and found cruise control light still on and vehicle still traveling at 60 mph. Depressed brake approximately 1/3 total braking range (4 cm), which should have locked the brakes and brought the vehicle to a full stop. No effect. Cruise control light remained on and vehicle continued at 60 mph. 4) at this point, driver realized that he had no control of the vehicle, panicked, and decided he had to stop or crash the vehicle. Driver jammed the brake petal as hard as he could and held. It took probably 3 seconds for the rear brakes to finally go up a logistic growth resistance curve, grab, and stop the vehicle. No braking by front wheels. Abs did not work. Contributing physical defects: worn-out front brakes, even though vehicle was kept under rigorous maintenance and had valid virginia state inspection sticker. Warped front brake rotors most likely induced intermittent false signals to computer control center causing cruise control to fail to disengage.

Tl- the contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving, the 4wd auto high or low failed to operate. The contact also stated that while accelerated, she tried to use the cruise control and although the green cruise control light illuminated, the vehicle failed to engage. A dealer was not notified. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 108,742. Lt.

Vehicle was in cruise control at about 60 mph and suddenly decelerated to 5-10 mph and would not accelerate. Engine, wrench and air bag light came on. Shut engine off and let sit and restarted. Vehicle drove normal but still had engine light on. Took to dealership and waiting on diagnostic. Could of been a dangerous situation if in heavy traffic.

The contact owns a 2004 Ford Explorer. While driving 55 mph with the cruise control activated, the vehicle lost power steering and braking, which resulted in a crash. All the warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and then towed to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. A police report was filed. There was one injury that required medical attention. The contact was treated for second degree burns. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
While driving down the street I activated the cruise control feature, but when I deexcellerated using the the steering wheel cruise control buttons down to a speed below 40, the engine shut off and power steering off, while I was still in motion on the street. I had to put the vehicle into park and crank up again (which almost didn't crank back up), to get back running. This is the first time using my cruise control feature and have read other horror stories of their Ford Explorer shutting off mid drive due to using the decel button during cruise control. Must be recalled for highway and interstate safety hazard immediately.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. While driving approximately 50 mph with the cruise control activated, the vehicle would not disengage from the cruise control while depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle spontaneously accelerated to 70 mph, the emergency brake did not work, and the cruise control was still active. The vehicle was shifted into park and pulled into a parking lot. The vehicle was left there. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 103,000.
I started the Explorer and went about 300 feet and pulled over to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. The Explorer continued to accelerate but was held back by the brakes until I shut the engine off. Upon restarting the Explorer ran fine until another incident in mid October. I started the Explorer and went about 500 feet to a stop sign and as I slowed down the Explorer wanted to keep going. As I was in a shopping mall parking lot and no one was around (also being the second time this happened) I pushed harder on the brake as the engine surged. This time I hit the cruise control off button on the steering wheel and the surge stopped. Neither time was the cruise control on. Also each time the Explorer had just been started. No lights indicating a failure on the dash. No chance I hit the cruise button.

My wife, and three children were driving at freeway speed with the cruise control set. The power steering failed and the warning lights came on. The controls on the steering wheel locked out and she could not cancel the cruise control. The loss of power steering made it difficult for her to get pulled over. She tried to call me for help but no functions of the sync system worked. She pulled over and waited for me. I restarted the car and the steering was reset. I drove it to the dealership. Today is Sunday so I will arrive there tomorrow and have it evaluated. Very hazardous and scary for my wife and the children. Unexpected loss of power steering is a safety issue that can cause accidents.

Our 2005 Explorer with v8 engine has developed a serious problem when cruise control is engaged and a hill is crested (for example) and the engine goes to idle it drops below stall speed and dies while driving. Driver must move shifter into n and restart, obviously critically dangerous problem. The car has no problem with normal driving or idling without cruise on. This problem is persistent and easy to reproduce even on flat surfaces when cruise backs off the throttle to slow down. A/c can be on or off.
This is a county govt vehicle purchased used from a dealer about 2 years ago. I had been highway driving for about 3-4 hours at speeds between 55-70 mph. I made one brief stop during that time, and was mostly using cruise control. Just prior to the incident, the speed limit drops from 70 to 55, and then to 35 in a relatively short distance. I used the cruise control coast to reduce my speed from 55 to 35. The 35 mph speed starts on a bridge- there is a small incline and then a little larger decline. At about the base of the bridge, the engine shut off, I lost steering and coasted to a stop. I don't recall if I had braking. I was with a passenger; it was night, and this occurred in an area that was not safe. I tried restarting the car, and it restarted with no problem. I drove to a nearby gas station. The power steering fluid was low, so I filled that, restarted, and drove the remaining 1 1/2 hrs with no problems. Other employees continued to drive over the next 2 1/2 months locally-very little highway driving, with no issues. On February 21, I was returning from a trip in this vehicle from the same area, with the same circumstances as above. When I was still on the bridge where the speed drops to 35, the engine shut off again. This time I was alone. There was a vehicle following very close behind me but fortunately I continued to coast as this was on the decline of the bridge. I was able to steer slightly to get off the highway. The check gauges; check engine, and battery warning lights were all on. The car restarted with no problems. I drove to the same gas station; checked the gauges-all were normal and no warning lights. I drove the 1 1/2 hrs remaining with no problems. On a web search, I found multiple cases of very similar problems on Explorers with no resolution. I could find no recalls on the VIN. This is an extremely dangerous and potentially fatal problem.
When setting cruise control at around 35 to 40 mph the engine dies. The power steering stops working and is very difficult to steer out of traffic. Turn the vehicle off and then it will restart and run until you try to set the cruise again.
The cruise control intermittently engages when it is turned off and the car speeds up, when the brake is pressed it shuts off momentarily then re-engages itself. It happens at any speed and there is no rhyme or reason for why it happens. Ford has been unable to resolve the issue on 4 different occasions over the past month.

Cruise control electrical disengage switch failed. Cruise control could only be disengaged by stepping on the brake very hard or by manually turning off the cruise control on/off switch.
I was driving down the highway and all of a sudden my transmission started slipping and the cruise control kicked it because the vehicle started to slow down so it went into high rpms then the transmission grabbed and shot the vehicle forward and I lost control and we spun in circles off the freeway. Had it not of rained all day the SUV would have flipped. Now my transmission is leaking fluid and it must be repaired by dealership or garage only and I cannot afford this repair and I see that there is a major problem these transmissions in these vehicles and me my child or my husband could have been badly hurt if not killed had this been on dry pavement!!!.
Traveling with the cruise control set at approximately 58 mph, traffic 100 - 120 feet in front of the vehicle came to an abrupt stop. Pressed the brake to disengage the cruise control and started applying pressure to the brake pedal. The vehicle seemed to initially start to slow, however, as we approached the stopped traffic, the engine continued to rev and we could not stop, causing us to hit the rear-end of the vehicle in front of us. The vehicle we hit moved forward a few feet and we hit the rear-end again as the Explorer's engine continued to rev and drive us forward even with constant pressure applied to the brake pedal. After the second collision, we were able to pull the Explorer off to the side of a road, notify the police, and file a accident report. The Explorer has not yet been taken to the dealership to evaluate what had happened.
Approximately 30% of the time, the coast button on the cruise control will actually function as the accelerate button. This can be disturbing if you hit coast to increase distance between you and another vehicle. When this does occur, I am able to hit the brake pedal and deactivate the cruise control.
While driving, the cruise control stopped working and car stalled. At the same time the abs light comes off and on.
The engine shuts off while using the cruise control.
My 2005 Ford Explorer engine shuts off while driving when cruise control is on. The engine also has a hum sound while cruise control was on. .
