While driving in "d" in first to second it has had a problem shifting between the 1st and 2nd gears when accelerating and will rev high rpms and sometimes do absolutley nothing when drying to move forward unless I DE accelerate and then try to accelerate agine then finally it will catch and go in to 2nd and proceed to 3rd and then 4th and then 5th ,4th and 5th when accelerating sounds very rough when accelerating like it's trying to hard to drive, lately it just the other day I had trouble getting it to go in to d to 1st 2nd 3rd automatic transmission shifting was not wanting to catch had t ok try 3-6 times DE accelerating and accelerating to try to get it to go finalt it caught and I was able to drive it so I stopped at the parts store had them do a scan and the only code that came up was p1701 they looked it up and it said something to do with trouble in reverse witch in reverse has no problem at all so I'm a little confused about it and also a little scared to drive it when this is my only transportation and if it won't engage in to gear when accelerating when in d that could be potentially dangerous also the odometer and speedometer do not work was told it was vehicle speed sensor so I replaced it still had issue so I replaced the odometer spiral gear hopefully it will fix the problem also the back seat double side would not go down fixed it after pulling it apart and drilling another hole into the spring loaded circle that has a tenchener on it fixed that . . . . And the driver and passenger automatic seats just stopped moving about half way so it's very hard for me to reach the pedal and the automatic side mirrors don't work eather one and the all fuses are good theas are all safety issues that have me concerned since it's all I have so anything or anywhere I can take it or do to it please contact me so it can get fixed ASAP for the shifting issue. When the cruise control commanded considerably more throttle on an interstate at 60mph, the vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly took off at very high speed (85+mph and accelerating when I finally shut the ignition off). I attempted to disconnect the cruise control via off switch and using the brakes to no avail. I shut the ignition switch off and coasted to the shoulder safely. Attempted a re-start, and the engine appeared to start at full throttle. I raised the hood and found the throttle cable retaining had broken, and the cable assembly had been pushed out of its bracket by the cruise control servo's force. Once out of its bracket and pushed to nearly full throttle, the throttle return spring had hooked on the bracket (see attached image), preventing a return to idle from nearly full throttle. The plastic retaining tabs on the throttle cable had evidently been broken by the long-time force of the cruise control, possibly aggrivated by years heat from the engine. This is a dangerous design, depending on tiny plastic tabs as the only block to such sudden, uncommanded vehicle acceleration. The cruise control was not defective, but had instigated the condition my breaking the throttle cable retaining tabs over time. The attached photo shows the displaced throttle cable, with the spring hooked on the bracket, holding the throttle nearly full throttle. This could easily have resulted in a high speed crash. As a retired air force fighter pilot and airline captain, I remained calm and worked the problem step by step to a safe conclusion, but a less disciplined driver in different traffic could have led to a different and tragic conclusion. A second photo shows the cable end missing the retaining tabs. A third shows the tiny plastic tabs on a new cable.

I began experiencing problems with the steering wheel mounted controls while driving, which were intermittent. First, the volume button failed and then cruise control functions failed. The cruise control would sometimes cancel on its own, causing a sudden unexplained loss of speed while I thought it was engaged. The "resume" and "cancel" button functions also swapped. "resume" would cancel the cruise control and "cancel" would resume cruise. I only figured this out after pressing cancel while in cruise control to slow the car for traffic ahead of me and it did not respond or slow the car. The car continued at its set speed until I hit the brakes to slow it. The diagnosis for the problem was that the clock spring had failed and it was replaced. I feel this is a serious safety concern, especially since the driver air bag may have also been affected. This car has only 43,000 miles on it. The first time I took the car in for service, they reinstalled software which did not fix the problem. I do not yet have the invoice from the replacement of the clock spring because it has not yet been paid while I test the repair. The clock spring did appear to fix the problem. The car was repaired at perry Ford in san luis obispo, CA.

I was driving at 60 mph and approaching a red light 1/4 mile ahead I released pressure on the accelerator but the car maintained 60 mph and would not slow down, I applied the foot brakes but realized this was not the answer, it felt like the cruise control was not releasing however the cruise control not being used, I placed the car in neutral and braked to a stop the engine was racing. I tapped the accelerator with my foot and the accelerator pedal retracted , the engine slowed,I continue my trip and after driving a few miles found that the accelerator was stuck again,I selected neutral and tapped the accelerator, the engine went back to idle. I pulled over and looked at the accelerator cable where it connects to the accelerator to make sure the accelerator was not caught on the carpet, I opened the hood to check the accelerator cable which was hidden under a large plastic shroud (cover), I removed the shroud in and immediately discovered the problem. A small cheep snap and lock fastener in the end of the cruise control cable had broken allowing the stiff cruise control cable connector to slip from its connector and restrict or lock the retarding movement of the accelerator cable, the throttle cable does not retract and the engine is stuck at a high rpm and a novice driver would not know what to do and would probably panic and eventually the brakes would fade and the driver crash. When the remedy is to 1) shift to neutral and 2) tap and release the accelerator quickly which because the cruise cable is not attached or anchored at it;s end quickly frees the accelerator cable in my opinion this cruise control connector and weak metal spring type push in fastener is too weak and suffers from metal fatigue over time. I am just glad my wife was not driving alone when this happened,,.

Speed control switch, also known as brake pressure switch on the 1996 Ford Explorer was defective. The thin membrane of the switch was in contact with the brake fluid. As the switch was powered all the time , hot, even when the ignition was off. This was a fire/safety hazard. Ford has already recalled millions of vehicles for this problem, but Ford customer service stated there was no recall for this particular vehicle, and I must pay to have the retro fitted switch installed.
Vehicle experienced sudden acceleration due to failure of a broken throttle return spring. (attorney for consumer). Mjs.
