Ford Explorer owners have reported 56 problems related to front air bag sensor control (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Explorer based on all problems reported for the Explorer.
Airbag sensor came on at about 55,000 miles. Went to dealer and they put on computer; told it is TSB 16-0001. Dealer suggested to replace the airbag harness, with connectors replaced for $963. 17, b/c warranty expired at 60,000 miles. This is a safety issue as none of the airbags in the car will deploy unless I pay Ford for a part that has no moving parts. Looking to see if aftermarket warranty will cover. I see multiple people with same issue have reported this so there should be a recall since it is a safety issue, potentially for children.

Faulty airbag sensor, dealer repairs are not guaranteed and the problem is not repairable under warranty. Currently the vehicle has 86728 miles. Vehicle was stationary when it first came on.
An airbag sensor light came on while car was stationary. Dealer said there is a wiring problem underneath rear seats, and was unsure if airbags would function properly due to the issue. Dealer was unsure what could have caused issue. This appears to be a safety issue, and a quick google search shows that other 2015 Ford Explorer owners are having similar issues.
Airbag sensor came on at about 66,000 miles. Disregarded for a while, as I was on a long trip. Went to dealer and they put on computer; diagnosis codes are dtc b141b and b141c. Dealer suggested to replace the airbag harness, with connectors replaced for $963. 17, b/c warranty conveniently expired at 60,000 miles. This is a safety issue as none of the airbags in the car will deploy unless I pay Ford ransom for a part that has no moving parts. I see multiple people with same issue so there should be a recall.
Vehicle has an NHTSA recall notice#:19v435 and a Ford issued recall#:19s17 which indicates as follows: recall description: rear suspension toe link replacement. Risk to safety: a fracture of a rear toe link significantly diminishes steering control, increasing the risk of a crash! I have contacted 3 different deals in my area (ecino, CA, 91316) all said that the replacement parts are currently unavailable. In addition, on Thursday, June 27th, 2019 I have contacted Ford motor company to see if the issue can be resolved but I got the same answer. They said I have to wait until the parts are available and they are currently back ordered with no estimated time for the issue with the vehicle can be resolved. They have asked me if I would like Ford motor company to "lemon" the vehicle and buy it back, I replied: "absolutely yes". They have opened a case#:cas21920919 I am seriously worried for my life when driving the Ford Explorer. I suffer from understeering whenever I attempt a left or right turn. At speed over 40 mph, the vehicle will start shaking giving me a sense of almost no grip to the road. In addition, I constantly have the "front airbag" light on (see picture attached) the dashboard, both when vehicle is in motion & stationary. This issue happened before and I took the car to a Ford dealer to resolve the issue (the service tech said that the sensor was malfunctioned and in a case of an accident, "front airbag" might not deploy!!! this is absolutely absurd. I here by certifie that my vehicle is serviced on time (see picture attached) and currently has 29,492 miles on it (see picture attached). I am not sure what is NHTSA part in all of this, but if you can help me deal with Ford motor company in resolving these issues and get rid of this vehicle, l will be very pleased and appreciative. Respectfully, zion yosef (818)854-2898 yosefmeister@gmail. Com.

Takatat recall?? I got in my car 1 morning to go to work and I couldn't get the male part of drivers seatbelt into the female part of seatbelt. My divers airbag seatbelt light has been on for 2 months. I cannot buckle drivers seatbelt into the female part of the seatbelt so when I am by myself I buckle driver seatbelt into passenger seatbelt. I called marshall Ford in ofallon missouri they told my I needed to pay $150. 00 for them to put my car on the machine for them to figure out what sensor is bad. I cannot afford to pay $150. 00 much less pay for the repairs. Please tell me if there is another fix. My car has never been in an accident. Help!.

The second row seatbelt airbags continue to set off the airbag sensor on the control panel and Ford technicians can find nothing to correct. Sensor set off while driving and passenger belted into driver side second row seat belt that contains a seatbelt airbag.

A week ago the vehicle showed 45 miles till empty. Backed out of the drive way to get gas and the car lost all power. Dash showed engine light and air bag. Filled up with gas and the lights went away. Today, going down the highway I lost all power. Talk about accident waiting to happen! luckily I was able to cruise to a exit and into a parking lot. Had to call Ford towing to come and get me. This is a 2016 Ford Explorer. Only 7000 miles. Brand new vehicle should not have this type of problem. Then the sensors around the car go off when there is nothing around. I know I am not the only person with this lost of power issue. I believe that the only way to actually get some assistance with this problem is after someone gets hurt and sues Ford. Another problem is there is a knocking sound as soon as the car is turned on and driven. You feel and the steer wheel knock along with the sound.
The contact owns a 2007 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that after starting the engine, the air bag sensor light illuminated. The contact indicated that the defect was intermittent. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 110,000.

The contact owns a 2004 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, another vehicle hit the rear. The crash caused the air bag light to flash on the instrument panel. The contact drove the vehicle to an authorized dealership to have the air bag light inspected. The dealer informed the contact that the air bag sensor needed to be replaced. Upon starting the vehicle, the engine malfunctioned and the vehicle became completely inoperable. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000. Updated 11/03/10.

2005 Ford Explorer, driving on a twisty coastal highway, about 35 mph, turned wheel to follow right hand turn in the road, there was no power to the steering wheel, or to the brakes. I had to wrench the wheel really hard to the right to keep from driving off of the road. I finally pulled to the side, turned on hazard lights, removed key from ignition. I reinserted key, car started and ran as if nothing ever happened. I drove for another 20 miles, about 40 minutes, without incident. Then the engine cut out again-no warning, just all of a sudden I was unable to accelerate. Service engine light came on, small wrench icon lit up, and digital display message "engine failsafe mode" appeared. There is nothing in the owner's manual about this warning message. I have taken the car to Ford dealer service where it was purchased. They have told me a sensor on a belt was damaged when the belt slipped off its pulley, and that sensor was therefore unable to sense the crankshaft, and therefore the engine shut down. There was no indication of why this occurred in the first place, or what measures could be done to assure that it does not happen again. This engine shutoff had occurred twice before, but both times the road was uncrowded, and straight, and the car ran fine after starting back up, so I didn't really think about it. But the idea that I could have very easily driven off the road, off a cliff (!) and died, or had my family in the car and this same thing could have happened, this to me is terrifying, and unacceptable. I realize there is inherent risk in driving a car, but potentially lethal malfunction of the vehicle should not be among those risks.

Currently own a 2002 Explorer XLT with only 65k miles on it. The transmission is in need of a rebuild because is slip from time to time. The rear differential seals are leaking. The entire rear of the vehicle makes a humming noise so I suspect that a rear bearing is going bad. Not to mention the 4wheel drive system has not worked since I bought it a little over a year ago. I've had intermittent issues with the air bag control module and also the backup alarm system. There is nothing but poor write-ups about this truck all over the internet. All the same problems I'm experiencing are problems many other drivers have also had.
The contact owns a 1999 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the air bag light remained illuminated after the vehicle was started. The mechanic stated that the air bag wiring failed and that the dealer could repair the vehicle. The contact has not yet taken the vehicle to the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 17,000.

I own a 2002 Ford Explorer and have had a ongoing problem with check lights coming on. First it was a check engine light which read that vehicle needed new catalytic converter . Then couple yrs later came on again this time for a sensor. Now I have a airbag light on it seems like one sensor after another. After reading very simmiler complaints on your site and others I think this should be looked at further. No exact events lead to the problem. All problems have been fixed except airbag light which just happend this week.
- the contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. The airbag warning light remained illuminated. The dealership informed the contact the driver's front seat pretentioner upgrade harness needed to be replaced. The dealership made the repair. The airbag warning light no longer illuminated. The current mileage was 73,000. Update 4/23/07.
Air bag disabled due to design defect in 2002 Explorer. A cable harness running under the floor to the drivers seat is too short. Moving the seat back causes the cable to disconnect and disables the drivers side air bag.
Recently the air bag warning light came on indicating a problem with the air bag system. Also, the driver's seat belt would not retract when the driver exited the vehicle. The onboard computer indicated a code of 33 in memory. This indicated that the mechanism under both front seats was faulty. This problem would have caused the air bags to deploy unnecessarily or not deploy at all. The faulty seat belt retractor would not have prevented the driver from being thrown forward in the event of a collision. The warning light was intermittent at first and eventually stayed on so there was 55,000 miles recorded when I finally took the vehicle to our dealership. The owner's manual revealed that the supplemental restraint system (srs) is warranted for 5years/50,000 miles, so I realize that it was beyond the warranty period. However, this is my concern and complaint. The srs is probably the most important safety system in a vehicle and should not require these types of repairs just 6 months and 5,000 miles after the warranty expires. This system should last for the life of a vehicle unless the vehicle is involved in a collision. No one should have to be concerned that their srs system will fail after the warranty expires. I am not a mechanical engineer, but these parts must not have been manufactured properly. If they were, they would not have failed. As was stated above, this Explorer was totally redesigned and sent to the dealer showrooms prior to the start of the 2002 model year. Were things overlooked or not done properly just to rush this totally redesigned Explorer to the dealer showrooms? if this was the case, should there be a recall for this model year in order to check this problem and ensure there are no safety concerns? the cost of these repairs is the minor issue of my complaint. The major issue is the safety of the driver and passengers. Safety problems with a vehicle will cause serious repercussions for the company.
Airbag light came on dashboard, thus disabling airbags in vehicle. The Ford dealer supposedly repaired the sensor. Less than one year later, the same issue recurred, with the same diagnostic code, and the dealer is refusing to honor the repair warranty. Air bags are now disabled.
: the contact stated the air bag light on the dashboard has illuminated. The light illuminated without warning. The dealer was contacted by phone and offered to inspect the vehicle, but the contact declined. The contact called the dealer, and he wanted to charge the contact for 2 hours of labor to look at the vehicle. The contact felt Ford should pay for two hours to have vehicle inspected. The contact did not have $200 to have it fixed for a safety problem.
Contact stated that right after purchasing the vehicle he had replace the brakes, tires, fuel filter, the fuel injection was cleaned , the anti lock sensors where replaced, the windshield was replaced . The air bags are also deployed. While driving the vehicle it vibrates on the left side. He took the vehicle to a mechanic they put the vehicle on a rack trying to line the vehicle. It would not line up. They found that the ball joints bad, also the motor mounts are broken. The mechanic told him that the frame is bent beyond repair.

I bought a 2002 Ford Explorer eddie bauer in Nov 2002. Around oct 2005 my airbag light came on and I was due for an inspection. I took it into a Ford dealership and they "diagnosed" it as a faulty seat belt. . . The seat belt worked fine, it even continued to lock-up during moderate braking. This cost me over $300. Not a month went by and the airbag light came on again. I called the Ford dealer, explained the problem and they told me that if it was determined it was a "new" problem I would be charged for that expense as well. I just can't believe that the light would come on after being "fixed" so soon.
I have had to have my vehicle serviced for the airbag light staying on two times in the past. Both times I was told it was a problem with the sensor for the airbag. The light came on again about one month ago and I took it to be serviced again last week. This time I was told it was an "electrical wiring problem" with my Ford 2002 Explorer that was causing the light to stay on. Repair was a whopping 487. 00. First, I am wondering why they didn't discover this problem on the prior two occasions and secondly, I have since discovered that a CO-worker has also had to have her Ford escape serviced 4 to 6 times for the same problem. The last time, she was told it was the sensor. Her airbag light has since came on again. Is this a systemic problem with the Ford family of suvs?.
The contact stated the instrument panel cluster was no longer working. The service dealer did not state why the panel was no longer working. The electrical components failed, such as the radio, blowers, windows, airbags, and all of the safety equipment. The dealer stated it was a common problem within this type of vehicle. The part to repair was no longer available. The consumer contacted the manufacturer; they referred him to the dealer to find an aftermarket product to repair the problem.
The abs light came on and stayed on while driving. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealership, and a diagnostic test was performed. The dealer determined that the module for the abs and speed senor went out. The dealership also noticed the pins for the frontal air bags were never connected at the factory, rendering the air bags inoperative.
Air bag has a defect-needs air bag harness kit. The seat belt light comes on & stays on . This is how I found out that there is a problem. The Ford garage says t isn't covered under my extended warranty.

Air bag light came on. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer. The air bag module had to be replaced.
April 04 purchased 2002 Ford Explorer; just over 60,000 miles. No longer under warranty;sold as is. Day after purchase, noticed knocking sound. Returned to dealer. Stated sound coming from the rear ac. Repaired, did not hear after repair. Approximately one week after purchase, noticed delay in gears engaging when going from park to drive , park to reverse also gear shift seemed to be loose. Returned to dealer; told it was normal for this model. Advised to keep in overdrive. Late July 2004, noticed delay seem to be getting longer and jerking suddenly when finally engaged. While driving ,od light flashed on and off erratically. Problem with od light intermittent. Spouse took the car to the dealer; told that it wasn't under warranty, but we could make a service appointment. Spouse took the vehicle to a shop had done business in the past. Thought that it could need transmission fluid. Checked fluid levels not deficient. Problems continued; had them look at it a couple of months later. Could not determine problem, advised to take to a transmission specialist if continued. Problem persisted. Seemed to get worse as the weather turned colder. Late December 04, delays in engaging gears worsened; now making a loud clunking noise and lunges when engages, od light flashed erratically on a frequent basis and engine service light on and gear shift seemed to be coming out. January 2005, spouse took the vehicle to a transmission shop for diagnostic. Transmission shot. Rebuilt at a cost of $2900. Found out that the vehicle had been repaired twice before, while under warranty for the same problems described. Its obvious from the number of complaints that this is a known design defect. When a company sells defective products they should be held liable, especially when they do so knowingly. I stopped making payments on this junk and will notify the lender so that they and Ford can fight it out. Any owner who wishes may contact me at 703-998-5510.
While driving out of a garage air bags deployed inadvertently. In may 2004 the vehicle was serviced by the dealer due to air bag light illuminating. Currently, six months later, while driving out of a garage at 5 mph the airbags deployed inadvertently.
April 04, the airbag light came on flashing 3 times (3 blinks each time) and then would remain on. I took the car to the dealership here at freeport jet wash while the car was still under warranty and the warranty was finishing in June. When I took the car in they hooked it up to the computer then simply said we have resetted the control system in the car and if the light comes back on to bring it back!~~~ well, didn't last too long and it came back on but this is a couple weeks later and now they tell me my warranty is up but I told them they were aware of this before the warranty expired - long story short they changed it at no cost to me and said Ford approved it to be fixed under warranty. But, that didn't seem to fix the problem, the airbag came on again a couple weeks later when they hooked it up again they said it was the same code and reset the control system in the car and told me to bring it back if it turns on. . . We all know what happened. . . It came back on. . . So they said they will change it again but this time not only did it take 4 months to hear back from them (only because I finally got tired of waiting and called them back) about the part but now they tell me that the part was not covered under warranty and the guy who did it shouldn't of (he is no longer with the dealership) and that I have to pay for the 3rd pretensioner to be put in my car after I have been trying to get this problem fixed a year and a half!.
Air bag wiring harness on 1999 Ford Explorer replaced at a cost to me of $550. Told by dealer it was defective per TSB 03-24-1. X4. 5x. It was replaced before when under warranty for same defect. Told by dealer not a safety issue so Ford would not cover costs, but also told if not replaced air bag system could fail.
2003 expolrer - defective computer sensor module for the airbag system for the entire vehicle.
