36 Spare Tire problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

I recently took the car to a Ford dealership to have a check-up. I knew that I would need to replace the tires soon, but have had trouble finding replacement tires due to the recall. The Ford service tech called me at work to tell me that my steel threads were showing through on one rear tire, and they did not have any replacements for me. He recommended that they put on the spare tire until I could get new ones. Since I knew that I would be driving on the highway for 120+ miles on labor day towing a horse trailer with my horse, I did not want to just have three worn tires and a spare. I started calling around and found four replacement tires (goodyear wrangler at/s) at a kaufman tire store. I drove from the Ford dealership that same day (on the original tires) to have the new ones put on. As they were switching the tires, the kaufman rep came to the waiting area to tell me - "you really dodged a bullet". Apparently, not only were the steel threads showing, they were showing because the tread was separating. They did not mention this to me at the Ford dealership. I have kept the tires, and the one looks as if someone took a razor blade to the edge - all the way around. As this was on the inside edge, I could not see it. I have my tires rotated regularly - the last time about a month and a half ago, so either this is a recent split, or the servicer did not notice (or noticed and failed to mention it to me). Given the recall, I thought I should info the NHTSA. Thank you. ( dot number: vf. . . Tire size: p235/75r15 ).

37 Spare Tire problem of the 1996 Ford Explorer

I bought the car used. I took the car to my mechanic to look over and recommend what work needed to be done in order for me to purchase the vehicle. I still have the original list. Among the things that I said needed to be repaired/replaced were the tires. The dealer refused. We bought the vehicle and I began driving it. It is my first SUV and I was uncomfortable with the way it handled on bumps in the road, over railroad tracks, in dips in the road, etc. Several times when I took the vehicle in for regularly scheduled maintenance, I complained about the way it handled. Because the dealer "could not duplicate" the problem, they said everything was ok. They also suggested that because it is an SUV I should get used to the rougher ride. The problem however was in the way I felt I lost control of the vehicle under these conditions, not that the ride was rough. I continued to complained about the way it handled on subsequent visits. I even began asking them to look at the tires. I became concerned about the tires as I saw dry rot on the outer edges of each of the tires. Again, I believe everytime I took it in I asked them to examine the tires and let me know if I should be concerned. They would note the tire tread on my paperwork but no one every counseled me. I took the vehicle to a service station near my home to see what they thought. I was told to replace the tires as soon as possible and to try not to drive for many miles at a time and especially during hot days. I replaced the tires within the week. I am concerned now about the firestone recall and that va is in phase three. I replaced my old firestone tires with michelins and do not wish to have a firestone product on any of our cars. How can I get the spare tire replaced and how can I get a credit for the old tires to apply toward the tires I replaced?( dot number: tire size: 255/70r/16 ).

39 Spare Tire problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

When a michelin dealer recently replaced the four 16 inch 255 firestone tires, he commented that the spare is a firestone 15 inch 225 tire. Is it safe to mix thes sizes? the 16 inch tires were original equiupment on the car -- not purchased as an option. Ford has not responded to my inquiry.

40 Spare Tire problem of the 2000 Ford Explorer

This is a spare tire, on my Ford Explorer sport where the sidewalls, and were the tread of the tires meets, started looking funny. Also the tread of the tire was wearing funny. If I would have kept this and if I had a blow out I would have had another blow out with this spare. (dot number: 8xhl319 tiresize: 235/r75/15).
