I was driving on the highway and when I began to turn off the exit I began hearing a loud grinding sound coming from my steering column. It was also extremely difficult to turn the wheel. Iam grateful that my young children were not with me at the time because the grinding was super lound and I was abosultely terrified that I was going to crash. I immediately took the truck to my local mechanic where he said that I should not be driving thr truck at all because I could definitely crash an kill myself or any others around me. Also that it is going to cost $2500. 00 to fix the problem. I just purchase this truck from autofair Ford in July 2020 for 20k and 6 months later am forced to dump 2. 5k into it when money is tight and my family is struggling as it is. . . I am extremely upset that this happened and to learn that this has happened to thousands of people, yet there is no recall for this issue. Aomething should be dont to help me and my family by Ford motor company this is not acceptable to be going broke because of this issue and the car is just 5 years old.
I have had replace the steering rack in this car twice. Once at 50k miles and then again at 92k miles. I have owned a lot of vehicles and have never had to replace a steering column, let alone 2. Researching it on the web it seems to be common in the car and very dangerous. It's so common that the dealer I brought it to stocks the part. That's scary! I have attached my 2 invoices for the same steering replacement. I'm hoping to at least get refunded for the second one. Or better yeat both if youy decide there should be a recall for this problem.

Good morning, manufacturer recall number20s62 NHTSA recall number20v675 I feel that the recall for the rear suspension is also causing the steering wheels on many of the Ford Explorers to squeak, or create a loud banging noise. My vehicle is currently squeaking every time I turn the steering wheel, this vehicle has never been in accident and never had the steering column replaced.
I got in my 2015 Ford Explorer this morning started the car backed out of the driveway and it would not steer no power steering at all. Apparently there is a steering module within the steering column that gets locked because of traction control there's be several accounts on social media where this has happened when people are driving down the freeway. Apparently if this module needs to be replaced the whole steering column needs to be replaced at a cost of over $3,000.

While going to back out of my driveway, I'm in reverse and moving and go to turn the steering wheel and it is locked and I get a "hill start assist not available, service advancetrac" now mine you this car is only 4yrs old with 25k miles on it. According to all the other complai ts I've read I've gotten off easy in the fact I was in my own driveway and not driving anyways with my children in the car, which is the main vehicle they would be in. Had towed to local Ford dealer and told its the pinion in the steering column not covered under my 5yr, 60,000 miles warranty and will cost $2,247 pkus tax to fix. Absolutely ridiculous. 4 years old barely driven at 25k miles to have this crazy expensive fix that I cannot afford! where is the recall on this known problem? are we waiting for someone to die? is that what it takes? if it happened while taking NY kids to school who knows what could have happened. Please do the right thing.

I went on vacation with my family for a week. We took my car to airport and parked it from 11/8-11/16. I had no problems on the drive to the airport, but when we came home, almost immediately, while pulling out of the parking space (still stationary) I heard a rubbing nose coming from what sounded like the steering column. Due to my son's always being in the vehicle I didn't want to chance anything since it seemed to be steering related. I took it to a mechanic who ended up telling me that it was my steering rack. He also informed me that on the year's before mine they had to issue a recall due to similar issues as mine. I've noticed that there are a lot of people with the same year and model that still have this problem even though it isn't a recall anymore for some reason. Luckily I caught mine before it cause a serious issue, being that people have said this causes their steering to completely lock up.
At approx 65k miles I noticed the steering wheel becoming stiff and a noise of plastic rubbing in the steering column. Today at 67k miles I took vehicle into Ford dealer for another recall to be told the rack is bad. Seeing as this is such an abundant issue with these vehicles, I'm trying to understand how this isn't a safety recall. If this part fails while driving it could lead to a catastrophic crash. Honestly I'm afraid to have the dealer replace it with an identical part since there is obviously an issue with the part is it is currently being produced.
Tl the contact owns a 2014 Ford Explorer. While driving approximately 65 mph, the power steering suddenly malfunctioned and the driver was unable to turn the steering wheel in either direction. Previously, while making sharp turns, a grinding noise was present coming from the steering column. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, but no failure was found. Issues started with several electrical glitches that occurred and still occur consistently with no resolution. Battery was "fried" and replaced, sync module was replaced, now the glitches include a frozen steering column while driving and a "charging system service now" light that comes on and off while stationary and driving. Also passenger side view mirror gets stuck outwards, interior electrical malfunctions. Truck is no longer under warranty and I am tired of paying $150 diagnostic fees with no resolution.

Brought truck in for diagnosis, problem with power steering. We were told the steering column or rack is failing as well as the gearbox. The truck is only two and half years old should not be happening it only has under 108k miles on it. The repair would cost nearly $2,200. Unacceptable! I already have a rebuilt transmission.
I have had this used car 2 months and it only has 25k on it, the steering column is grinding and feels very tight when driving, almost like your driving on a flat . Dealership offered to fix it for $2000. 00 . Are you kidding? should be a recall like older years are.

Us service member overseas (which complicates the solution). Purchased vehicle in us in August 2015. Currently about 45,000 miles on a 2015 Ford Explorer sport and loud pop from steering column at low speeds. Local mechanic says entire steering column needs replaced and over 2600 euro ($3000). Shouldn't happen at low miles. Others experiencing similar issues across model years.
The steering column went out at 38,000 miles. The motor is dead and entire thing needs to be replaced.

This was the 3rd time it had happened. On 5/11/2018 the steering wheel locked up in the parking lot and not on the highway like before. We had to have the vehicle towed to the dealer. The dealership verified that it was locked up and the codes were still displaying on the dash. After investigating the codes the dealer stated that the steering column needed to be replaced. Well when the steering column was replaced we went to pick it up. It was reported by the dealer that a sensor had shorted out on the column causing the issue. So my wife and I did not!!! feel safe driving this vehicle after this knowing that it could happen again. Not a good feeling.
Steering column is supposedly damaged by "environmental factors" according to dealer service. I am not sure how the environment gets in there but they won't cover it even with the Ford premium care warranty package. The vehicle is only 5 years old 59,000 miles. Can't turn steering wheel easily, it skips sometimes. They say there is rust and corrosion in there and almost $1000 to replace after paying over $2600 for this super package warranty. It cost me $135 for them to tell me they wouldn't cover any of it!! I can't believe Ford is not doing anything about this issue that is pretty common after doing some research. People not to be able to turn their steering wheel could turn into a major issue. If I get into an accident for not being able to turn when they wouldn't cover anything better be sure I will be getting a lawyer.
The steering column and all the parts associated with the steering of the vehicle were affected when the bolts that hold the clamps that secure the bushings to the steering column began to loosen. I examined the area carefully and noticed that because the bolts loosened, the clamps were given too much play. Within a short while, a month or two, the entire steering column and the shifter were completely secured by one broken clamp that held its place because of the bushings and a loose bolt. The other clamp was also broken but was laying on the floor board. It wasn't an expensive fix. I customized a metal clamp for each of the two places the went. They are the same clamps the electricians use to secure cables and wires to the walls and ceilings. I used the ones made from bronze. They are more pliable to shape for an almost perfect fit. With a little grease above and below the bushings and also some where the now bronze clamps hold the bushings, I believe that the steering column is as safe as can be. Also, the plastic that holds the cable that is used to adjust the shift indicator needs to be made of a different material. I'll get to that soon.
On Dec 27, 2017, I started my car & received the power steering assist fault message on my dashboard & was unable to move my car. I was parked in my work parking lot. I had my car towed to lithia Ford in grand forks, nd & was told by my Ford service department the power steering control module was faulty and needed to be replaced. They stated it is part of the steering column and the steering column would not work without replacing the pscm. My Ford protect warranty did not cover the issue and my 2013 Ford Explorer falls outside of the manufacturing dates of the recall 14s06 (14v286000 steering: electric power assist system), as told to me by Ford motor company. I have tried, along with the service manager at lithia Ford, to get Ford motor company to get my car included in this recall as it experienced the same issue. As of Jan 4, 2018, Ford motor company stated they can't help me since I already got by car fixed.
The shift lever literally snapped off at the steering column while putting the car into drive. Car couldn't be shifted into park, still running. Keys couldn't even be removed to turn the car off. Very dangerous. Seems like a fairly common problem among 2002 Ford Explorer owners. . Read more...

The gearshift on the column is loose and does not line up properly with the gear indicator. When its in park it still drifts forward unless the gear shift is pushed up pass park. This is a safety hazard which I was told this problem has existed for some time in these year Ford Explorers.
