8 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2011 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/15/2020

The car drove fine at 7am - at 8:30 am. I pulled out of my driveway, I was going 45 mph with my 9 year old in the car on a very busy road, all of a sudden the car starting flashing "hill descent control off" then it went to "service advance trac" then "service power steering now" and power steering completely failed. I had to steer the car to the side of a ditch with my 9 year old daughter, and its 26 degrees out. Car had to be towed to my repair shop. Repair guy states power steering rack is not good and states there is an open recall on 2011 Ford Explorer for it. I look through service records I show him in 2016 riverhead Ford did the work 5 days after I bought the car - he says there is no way it was done otherwise this would not be happening. Or, the parts they used to repair it are faulty. I called riverhead Ford they can't service the car, or give me a loaner until 1/7/2021 because of covid & told me there was nothing they can do. In the last four years I've replaced the power steering rack, the engine blew 18 months ago, and now the power steering rack again. The car is defective, and I'm lucky my daughter and I are alive. Ford needs to address this before someone is killed.

Upon starting my car an alarm came on and said my electric power steering has failed and I could not turn the wheel. So I shut the car off then restarted it and the alarm went away. Two days later this happened while I was backing out of the garage I did the same thing , shut off and restarted the car.

10 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/06/2020

Power steering failed completely on my 2016 Ford Explorer while driving. Dashboard lit up with a steering assist fault, and then hill assist fault. Steering the vehicle to safety was very challeging. I was turning at a left turn light and almost crashed into another vehicle because I could not steer the car. Looked it up online and have found numerous other accounts of the same issue with no repsonse or recall from Ford.

11 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2014 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/06/2020

Power steering failed while pulling out of a parking space causing the vehicle to be extremely difficult to control. Multiple warning messages appear in the dash upon starting the vehicle. 13 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/14/2020

The power steering on my 2013 Ford Explorer will intermittently stop working while the vehicle is in motion on a city street. My wife almost had an accident due to this because it makes the vehicle extremely difficult to control. This is a known defect with Explorers and there was a recall issued (14s06) but only for certain VIN numbers. My Explorer was not covered under this recall and I had to pay $1800 to replace the whole power steering rack. This issue is the exact issue the other Explorers were recalled for and my Ford service advisor agreed with me. But he said I still had to pay for it because my VIN was not included in the recall. This is a dangerous safety issue that must be addressed. The recall must be expanded to include more Explorer VIN numbers. This is a hazard not only to the drivers of Explorers but also other motorists. Please investigate this issue. A google search of "Ford Explorer power steering failure" will tell you all you need to know.

This occurred twice during a trip from charlotte, nc to fort worth, TX. In both instances, the road conditions were the same - transition from smooth to undulating pavement.

16 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/26/2020

I was driving on highway 45 in illinois in my 2015 Ford Explorer and was slowing down for a red light when my power steering failed and a warning came on in the vehicle information display stating "steering assist fault " service required. I was three blocks from the Ford dealer and drove there. Steering was very difficult and I was fortunate to be so close to the dealer. A tech did a pin point inspection on the vehicle and the next day I was told that there was corrosion in the power steering control module terminal contacts. Grease was applied and I was charged $323. 00 . I was advised that if this happened again that I may need to replace the power steering control module on the vehicle and this would cost $2300. 00. This vehicle has 33500 miles on it and is garage kept with regular maintenance . I asked why the terminal contacts weren't checked during regular maintenance which was done three months ago and was told it is not part of the inspection .

17 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2014 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/20/2020

2014 Explorer limited with 103,587 miles was being driven at vehicle was driving in city conditions at 20 mph while turning. The power steering failed and the power steering assist fault came on. Managed not to hit the car in the oncoming lane by wrestling the wheel to the right. Pulled over and turned the car off and then restarted to find the problem had abated. This occurred on or about the 20th of April, 2020. The second time the power steering failed, I was driving on the highway straight. I looked down only briefly and there were several messages displayed of which I caught the first "power steering assist fault" is the only one I recognized. I was again able to pull the car over to the side of the road, and after turning the car off and then back on the power steering was back on. This event occurred may 14th 2020.

18 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2011 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/03/2020

Power unit assist fault. Power steering failed with my wife driving and she was lucky to not have an accident. I found that there is a recall that was issued for this year and model but for some reason our vehicle is not included in this recall. It is the exact issue as specifed in the recall. My wife was driving on back from the store when this failed. She was able to pull off the road with some effort and noticed the fault light on the dash. She called me and I told her to stop and restart the car. She did but the fault still shows. The car is almost impossible to drive in this condition and a safety hazard.

Also, the dealer could not confirm the steering module was reprogrammed. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 87,000. Gl.

20 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2014 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/28/2020

Power steering randomly failed when I turned the car on to pull it out of garage, power steering assists fault or something, unable to steer the car easily. Read online that this is a pretty common problem with this model year, can happen while driving, all surrounding years have been recalled already. Was lucky I was not on a high speed road or could have had an accident as would not have been able to steer the car.

21 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2011 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/17/2020

There is currently a recall for Ford explores 2011-2013. The recall is listed as 14s06. I was told by for customer service that my VIN number is not covered in that recall. I would like to appeal that. In January 2020 my power steering failed and my vehicle had to be towed to a shop and the steering rack and assembly had to be replaced. This cost about 3k in out of pocket costs for me to repair. Less then 3 months later my power steering failed again. This resulted in my vehicle having to be towed to the shop again I was then told that the power steering control module needed to be updated and it was another almost $400 for them to update the module. All of the above issues are the same issues listed in the recall under 14s06. The only issue is my VIN number is not associated with the recall. I'd like to appeal the decision that did not include my vehicle in the VIN listing for this recall.

The vehicle is under Ford's extended warranty, and has been to (2) separate dealers to troubleshoot. The first dealer could not reproduce the issue, the dealer it is currently at, has been able to reproduce the issue multiple times, but not sure the root of the problem, as it doesn't store any codes. The dealer believes it is a high speed can network malfunction. It has been in the repair shop for a total of 12 weeks. 25 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/06/2019

I was driving down the highway and I got errors saying my advace trac system needed to be serviced. Also that my power steering failed and I needed to pull the vehicle over safely. I was going about 65mph and my power steering went out!. I had to take an offramp shortly after (I was on my way to work) and it was difficult to steer the vehicle. Very dangerous!.

26 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/04/2019

Upon starting vehicle in driveway, experienced intermittant power steering failure also showing stability control error. Vehicle is 2013 Explorer with 95k miles. Turning vehicle off and restarting seems to correct the issue for now. Researced and saw recall 14v286000 for same reported issues, but seems that my VIN does not fall within the designated vehicles.

27 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/11/2019

The power steering has failed and is reporting error power assist system failure. The stability control os also reporting an error. The behavior is the same as is described in recall# 14v286000, but the VIN check doesn't include my vehicle in the recall even though I have the same model vehicle that is the subject of the recall. I have seen reports by others reporting the same issue and are also finding their vins are also not included in the recall. Intermittently I used to get the power assist system failure message when I would first start the car, but after turning the car off and then on again everything would be fine. However, a few days ago the system failed permanently. Fortunately it occurred while tue car was stationary, in my driveway. I'm taking car to dealer for repair tomorrow, however, I'm expected the repair to cost around $2000. I dont understand why such a critical part can have such catastrophic failure when the car is only 6 years old and only has 116,000 miles on it. I have owned cars with over 200,000 miles that did require complete replacement of the steering system.

28 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2012 Ford Explorer

29 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/14/2019

Upon starting the vehicle the warning indicator "power steering assist failure" message appears and there is no power steering. Turning off and restarting sometimes resets the warning and power steering will return but not always. There is a current recall with the same problems (14s06) but my VIN falls outside the manufacture date. Reached out to fomoco and they verified there are no recalls and there have never been any recalls for my VIN. One month ago I received a recall letter from Ford for a different issue that I had fixed under the recall by Ford. That recall didn't show up in Fords database either for my VIN when I called today but yet it existed and was fixed. Odd that the same power steering problem keeps occurring on vehicles but Ford wont recognize the problem because of a build location and date. Ford doesn't engineer us spec vehicles based on their manufacturing plant, they seem to be saying that the same engineers that designed a faulty electric power steering motor for chicago didn't design a faulty motor for another plant. Or the original "fix" didn't real "fix" the problem.

30 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/09/2019

I have had intermittent issues with the power steering going out. Generally when I start the car. I can usually restart it and it works fine. Just recently, the power steering completely failed while driving. It is still not working. Just took it in to the Ford dealer for repair. They are telling my that my VIN# is not part of the power steering recall, but clearly it has been affected by the recall of the Ford Explorer from 2011-2013.

31 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/05/2019

The power steering gear failed at 41,000 miles. Because of this, the vehicle steering was unpredictable. You turn the wheel, but it may not straighten back out. After reviewing some message boards, this sounds like a common issue with the 2016 Explorer between 40k and 50k. This is a serious flaw, and serious safety issue. I was lucky enough to only run into problems at lower speeds. However if this would have happened at highway speed, with my wife and kids in the car, there is no telling how horrible it would have been. Not to mention the possibility of hitting others on the road due to loss of steering. Seeing how there are multiple people with this problem, I believe this has to be a recall.

32 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/04/2019

There is a recall for 2013 Ford Explorer for power assist power steering failure. My vehicle based on VIN number is not included(it is a 2013 as well) I have a power assist power steering failure and Ford refuses to acknowledge the issue. I have a case number with Ford: cas - 24449952.

33 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/04/2019

On the evening of 04oct,2019 my vehicle experienced the failure outlined in NHTSA recall #14v286 (power steering failure). Ford needs to expand the number of vehicles covered under this recall as this is a major safety failure that could result in injury, loss of life and/or property damage. Ford does not have a policy or procedure on file to deal with vehicle owners like my self I believe that this is highly regrettable and should be addressed as soon as possible. Thanks ivan b. Stevens 260-312-0698.

34 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/04/2019

The electronic steering rack has failed and locked up. This recall has been issued for some Explorers but should be expanded to include more VIN numbers as this is the same problem and the vehicle only has 40,000 miles on it. The problem started while I was driving it. I took it to a mechanic and the steering locked up fully and power steering failed during their test drive.

35 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/01/2019

Tl- the contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while attempting turn the vehicle it became difficult to maneuver the steering wheel as if the power steering failed.
