Sudden power steering failure while driving cruising speed. . Car became extremely limited to handle. Ford tech verified and pulled code u3000:61 requiring replacement of steering gear.
Power steering has previously been recalled, software was updated but then ultimately power steering failed, Ford sent out supplemental recall and extended warranty to repair steering issues yet that is disregarded after 10yrs or 150,000 miles whichever comes first for the vehicle. I, like many, experienced failure after 150,000 miles, 156k to be exact. It's pathetic that Ford will not back their own vehicles past 150,000 miles. Aside from the steering failure our current 2011 Explorer looks brand new, it's a shame that Ford turns their backs to you and lays the repair cost on the consumer knowing that it has been an ongoing issue for some time. I spoke with Ford customer service to no avail, they will not do anything for you past 150,000. Sadly this is my wife's vehicle that transports our kids. Ford knowingly puts consumers in danger by not honoring their recalls or extending them for the lifetime that the vehicle is in use. Even after the first software update they performed on the car the power steering would not turn on here and there, eventually it stopped turning on entirely. Ford is not built tough like they preach, they are built poorly and their backs are turn towards the consumers when issues arise. Such a frustrating experience.

While driving 2014 Explorer very near home, the power steering failed. I was able to drive back home but called for a tow to the dealership for repair. The code said reset computer. This was done but during test drive failure happened again. Since no code is provided, I am told the only thing that is left is just to drive it and see if it happens again. This just seems very unsafe especially if my wife is driving and unable to handle the car to a stop or we are in heavy traffic.

Driving on highway when the steering failed. Dealer says that the electronic power steering failed and needs to be replaced. Vehicle has approx 80k miles. I have found many instances of this same occurrence when searching online. Fortunately in this instance no accident or injury but why has a recall not been issued and why is Ford ignoring the problem.

2013 Ford Explorer sport - my vehicle is having dangerous steering issues. My vehicle is appears to be experiencing an intermittent power steering failure. While driving the vehicle at any speed there appears to be steering loss. There also appears to be loss of steering when at different steering angels. It appears to shut down the power that is being sent to the power steering assist. This fault happens when in any location, highway, parking lot, local street, city street, etc. The issue happens randomly at all speeds and sometimes when the vehicle is stationary. The most discouraging aspect of this problem with the vehicle is that Ford had recognized the same exact problem with the same make and model vehicle of mine, that were only built just months before mine. It is also disappointing to see that Ford is not even looking into the issue (as told by customer care representative in the philippines).
Tl the contact owns a 2011 Ford Explorer. While attempting to reverse from the driveway, the "power steering assist failure" message appeared on the message center. The contact turned off the vehicle and it restarted normally. The contact stated that the failure began approximately two months ago and was becoming more frequent. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 83,000.
When driving in the rain, if I go through a puddle on the passenger side of the car, the power steering fails for varying amounts of time. It has happened more than once, through the life of the car. I only just found out I could make a complaint.

Power steering will fail while driving down road. This is a design flaw from Ford and they should repair it. This failure is caused by overheating of the electronic assemble in the steering rack. I will sue Ford if they do not respond to this complaint.
Vehicle has been through 4 steering racks each time it is replaced the vehicle has left the service shop only to return in less than 24 hours. Steering tightens up rendering the vehicle almost impossible to drive. Dashboard displays warnings such as power steering failure, service power steering, powertrain lock, etc. This happens while driving. Once I was on a back road, once on a highway and once on a service road just miles from the dealership.

Power steering failed while driving on a city street.
Vehicle has 74,200 miles on it. Power steering is failing intermittently. I have been noticing that under minor steering movements (lane changes or minor curvature in road) I understeer due to intermittent loss of power steering assist for approximately 1 second. When power steering comes back oversteer and end up swerving vigorously due to assist returning. It has created a dangerous situation many times in the past couple weeks can easily create complete loss of control of vehicle at speed.
I was stuck at a standstill in traffic on a city highway with my family on father's day when the dash lit up with multiple warnings such as "steering loss stop safely," "service advancetrac," "stability control off," and "hill start assist not available. " I was not moving and could not understand what happened. No one was injured and the vehicle's power steering failed. The vehicle was not overheating. Roadside brought the vehicle to a nearby dealer. Eventually, two days later, the computer said we needed a new steering column (I thought a steering column should last the life of the vehicle. . . ). There were no warning signs, no leaks, and no strange noises. Of course, I was past my warranty. Pretty hefty bill. There is an new recall for a rear suspension problem that was issued just days earlier.

Power steering failure.
While driving, the steering became extremely difficult. The power steeling and stability control lights came on with a warning. The power steering failure nearly caused an accident. The vehicle was on a city street and the power steering failed while turning.
Power steering failure while in motion on interstate.
The power steering failed as I was starting to turn. I was letting off the brake and barely pressing the gas pedal and as I started to turn the wheel, a warning message popped up stating that the power steering assist had failed. I could still turn the wheel (with quite a bit of effort) , so I completed my turn very slowly and moved off to the side of the road. I turned the car off and on again and the power steering worked again. After that, the power steering failed 5 times while I was backing up. Each time I turned on the car, put it in reverse, then as I would let off the brake and just touch the gas pedal and start to turn, the steering wheel would seize up and the power steering assist failure notice would pop up. Turning the car off and on again would correct the problem. Brought it into the Ford dealership and this is not covered under warranty or recall.
While on the highway at about 80 mph the gauge cluster screens showed a power steering fault and a traction control failure error and it caused the steering wheel to stiffen up moving only about less than an inch, we pulled over to the side of the highway and shut off the car and then we turned the car back on and it started working just fine until the same exact scenario occurred for the second time. A few days before the power steering error and traction control error popped up on the gauge cluster at a red light, the steering was very stiff and allowed for limited movement. The power steering and traction control error occurred twice at stoplight and they both went away by turning on and off the car. All of this happened after we sent the car to a mechanic to get the power steering module checked and replaced after the car left us stranded as the power steering had previously failed entirely on us. This has been an ongoing issue with this car for about a 5 months and it's been an absolute headache!!!!.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. While operating the vehicle, the power steering failed and the power steering indicator illuminated. The contact was able to drive the vehicle home. The vehicle was towed to scaffidi auto (3733 stanley st, stevens point, WI 54481, (715) 344-4100) where it was diagnosed that the steering gear needed to be replaced. The repair would cost $2,300. The manufacturer stated that there were no recalls and referred the contact to NHTSA. The warranty provided coverage up to 150,000 miles. The failure mileage was 150,246.
Tl the contact owns a 2015 Ford Explorer. While driving approximately 60 mph, the lane detection failure message suddenly appeared and the power steering failed. The steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. After stopping the vehicle and restarting the engine, the vehicle operated normally. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who found diagnostic code: c200d and advised the contact to take the vehicle to the local dealer. The vehicle was taken to jones Ford of north charleston (5757 rivers Ave, north charleston, south carolina), but the code was no longer present after restarting the vehicle several times. The cause of the failure could not be determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 45,000.
Power steering failure. Happened while driving down the foad.

The contact stated that it became difficult to maneuver the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Ferrario auto team located at 2472 corning rd, elmira, NY 14903, (855) 468-5337, was contacted by phone. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not subjected to any open recalls. While driving down the highway my power steering assist failed making my car very unsafe to drive.
Power steering failed and reverted to manual steering while operating the vehicle on a city street. "power steering fault" message displayed in the instrument cluster center. I was able to drive to vehicle to a safe location, although it was quite difficult. If my wife had been operating the vehicle under the these same circumstances, it would have been extremely hard for her to maneuver the vehicle, which could have resulted in accident. Also, we have small children that could have also been on-board which makes this issue all the more concerning, since this vehicle is mainly used to transport children to and from school. After driving to a parking lot, I turned the vehicle off and then back on. The power steering re-engaged and I was able to drive home safely without any further issues. I immediately called the local Ford dealership and scheduled a service appointment. The dealer scanned the power steering control module for codes and found a diagnostic trouble code that requires replacement of the steering gear. Total cost for parts and labor was $2,000. The vehicle was repaired and we have not experienced any other issues with the power steering. It should also be noted that the vehicle was purchased new from the dealership and currently has approximately 74,500 miles. I was informed by Ford customer service that my VIN number wasn't part of any recall and there were no other programs available to assist me with the cost of the repair. Per my online research, there is a recall on this issue for the year of my vehicle, but it appears my build date is outside of the recall. This is not acceptable. It makes no sense why certain vehicles are excluded, when the issue has clearly been identified and addressed in other vehicles built in the same year. I am requesting that the NHTSA investigate the issue described above and issue additional recalls.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. Once the vehicle was in the drive position, the steering wheel seized without warning. The vehicle was taken to sarasota Ford (707 s washington blvd, sarasota, FL 34236, (888) 349-4989) where it was diagnosed that the electric power steering failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall. The failure recurred. The failure mileage was 144,226.
On 18 April 2019 filed complaint number: 11197130. Power steering was just becoming difficult to turn. Called Ford for existing recall on power steering (NHTSA campaign number 14v286000). Ford stated that this vehicle VIN was not part of the recall. On 20 April 2019 the power steering failed at approximately 10:30pm in newburyport MA. Wife was driving. Almost crashed into pol. Stopped at the last second. This vehicle should be covered under recall. This was a safety issue. Someone could have been killed if a young driver was behind the wheel.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the power steering failed and the steering wheel made an abnormal grinding noise when turned. The vehicle was then taken to gosch Ford of temecula (26895 ynez rd, temecula, CA 92591, (951) 708-9148) where it was diagnosed that a new power steering rack needed to be installed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the recall repair could not be performed because the VIN did not match the vehicle. The failure mileage was 108,107.

Last year my power steering on my 2013 Ford Explorer failed. It was parked and when I went to turn it on it said power steering failure. When I inquired about a recall I was told my car did not fall under the specifications, so I had to pay to get the power steering replaced (roughly $1,400). Nine months later my power steering failed again, this time it happened while I was driving.
I have been experiencing power steering assist fault errors on startup on my 2012 Ford explore fwd. This results in complete power steering failure which makes it impossible for me to turn the wheel to either direction. I've read that there is a recall but Ford has not sent me any notifications in mail or notified me when I had the car at the dealership for service.
