Ford Explorer owners have reported 103 problems related to steering failed (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Explorer based on all problems reported for the Explorer.
While in motion, the power steering quit operating. I was on a straight road near my house. No accidents but could have easily been a deadly crash if failed in a different situation. Turns out there was a recall, 14s06 on the Ford Explorer but my VIN was not included. $2700 in repairs by Ford dealer. Obviously, the scope of vehicles that fail was underestimated for this issue of steering failure. Furthermore, in reading the owners manual, it references the failure in the manual and how to reset it by cycling engine power. This obviously was understood by Ford as an issue from the beginning.

My 2014 Ford Explorer, which only has 83,000/miles, started experiencing tightness in the steering wheel while driving. In conducting research, these seems to be a common problem, which results in a $1,700. 00-to-$2,000. 00 repair bill. The second concern is the steering failure noted by some complaints, which endangers everyone within the vicinity time the point of failure. If it is so common, and could result in a serious injury, including death, why is this not being recalled?.

Tl- the the contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while his wife was driving 40 mph, making a slight turn in the roadway she loss control of the vehicle as the steering wheel failed. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle went into a slight ditch stopping in a driveway on the opposite side of the road. The contact's wife was not injuried. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The contact called local dealer victory lane Ford, inc. (903 old rte 66 n, litchfield, IL 62056) who informed him that the rack and pinon needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Manufacturer. Was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000. Vw.
On several occasions when I go to start the vehicle I get a message on the left side of the dash cluster that says " steering assist fault failure, seek service. " the vehicle won't start. After I keep pressing the start button if will start. I carried it to the dealer ( paradise Ford in cocoa, FL) and they said there were no codes in the system but did say there were a lot of problems with the steering failure on that model and would cost around $2,500. 00 to repair out of my pocket. The vehicle only has a little over 5,000 miles on it as of 11/29/20.

Vehicle steering suddenly stopped working while in motion nearly causing a head on collision. Vehicle is 2 months outside build date of previous recall for steering failures. Vehicle steering almost impossible to turn wheels in any direction.
The vehicle was in motion, luckily at low speeds when the steering failed completely, vehicle immediately became unable to steer (this was not loss of power steering, it was loss of steering completely). Several warnings immediately popped up including steering assist system failure, service required immediately. Upon investigation it appears this issue was covered (via recall) in year models 2011-2013 and 2015-2017. For some reason VIN's from 2014 were omitted from the recall yet I am far from the only person experiencing the same issue with these 2014 models. We love our Explorer but I am afraid to let my wife or daughter drive it now. The repair is going to cost me approx $3,000 plus the cost of having it towed to the dealership. This is a major safety issue and should be addressed by Ford and NHTSA as soon as possible. This year model being omitted from this recall is an incredible oversight. My Explorer had 123,000 miles at the time of failure. At the time of failure there was no excessive force or harsh driving conditions being used.
Tl- the contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while his wife was driving, the steering failed. The power steering and traction control and several other unknown warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to duncan Suzuki, 1001 e main st, pulaski, va 24301, and was diagnosed that the steering rack failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact called the manufacturer and was informed that the vehicle VIN was not part of a recall and provided a case number. The failure mileage was approximately 44,000. Aw.
Recall 14s06/15n01 performed in 2016 for failed steering. Complete steering rack replaced. 4 years later the steering completely failed again while my wife was driving. Luckily I was with. Vehicle is impossible for her to steer when it failed. I was able to take over and get the vehicle home. Takes all the strength you need to turn. Took it to Ford dealership. Ford refuses to replace the failed steering rack again that was replaced under a safety recall. Ford also refuses to help with any financial support for the $3000 repair. In review of 14s06 and 15n01 there have been multiple supplements with extended coverage but only 1 time replacement. Thus they are recusing themselves of liability should a crash have occurred. The safety recall solution is simply a continuation of a major safety issue they do not stand behind. I'm grateful my wife and kids were not alone or in an accident. Others may no be so lucky and Ford needs to be held responsible for their solution. 8 year old vehicle. Steering has failed every 4 years since new. Recall means nothing, people will get hurt.

My wife was driving down the road when the steering quit. It was pulling from side to side and she almost lost control. Steering failure alarms were continuing to go off. She was able to get the vehicle off the roadway and avoid a crash.
Was driving up a hill going around corner and steering failed nearly causing an accident . There was no warning and the steering jerked to the left in a right hand turn. Was barely able to control vehicle . I am a fairly muscular person and it took everything to control the vehicle. Was barely able to get vehicle home luckily I was only a couple miles from home. An average person would not have been able to control the vehicle and an accident would likely happen . Under research with Ford with electronic steering this is happening regularly and accidents are happening. There is no warning and the steering wheel gets jerked to one side or the other with very little control on the vehicle. The vehicle I was driving was moving when this occurred.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving at 45 mph, the steering wheel ceased as the anti-lock braking system, steering assist failure, and the service advanced track warning messages appeared on the instrument panel. The contact pulled over and restarted the vehicle however, the failure persisted. Due to the failure, the contact had the vehicle towed to a relative's house. The contact spoke to cecil atkission Ford Lincoln (2700 veterans blvd, del rio, TX 78840) where she was informed that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The manufacturer was then notified of the failure and was given the same information as the dealer. The contact was then referred to NHTSA for assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
An error comes on the dash that says steering failure pullover safely. The whole power steering is electric and Ford has had this problem before.
Tl the contact owns a 2014 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving 40 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact stated that the steering assist failure and service advance track warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was driven to her residence. The vehicle was taken to local dealer randy wise Ford inc. Located at 968 s. Ortonville rd, ortonville, mi 48462, (248) 627-3730, to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the steering gear needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA campaign number: 14v286000 (steering), however the VIN was not included. The manufacturer had not been informed of failure. The failure mileage was 127,300.
95k miles. I stopped to use restroom and cane out started car to alarms that said steering assist failure service required. It had no power steering. After much research I have found this was recalled from one factory but it seems the issue is much wide spread. I was able to stop and restart and it cleared up only to go out while driving.
The steering failed with associated steering fail message while make a low speed turn making it very difficult to control the vehicle. I delivered the vehicle to the dealer as I discovered there was an open recall (14s06 & 15n01) on it for this problem. The dealer stated that although my vehicle VIN was subject to these recalls, Ford denied the recall coverage as the mileage exceeded program terms by 7,000 miles. Further review of Fords letter to dealers dated may 17, 2019, the letter stated that the repair would be covered "regardless of mileage or warranty. This was stated in supplement #3 to the safety recall 14s06.

I own a 2012 Ford Explorer. Recently I received a warning on the dashboard indicting that there is a power steering assist fault. This happened while I was driving the vehicle with my family (lucky at a low speed). I am aware of a recall for this issue. In short, the recall covers 2011-2013 Explorers and mandates that Ford replace first the software for the steering rack assembly and if that does not rectify the problem then the entire steering rack assemble itself. I visited my local Ford dealer who diagnosed the issue and stated that the entire steering rack assemble failed and needed to be replaced. They also informed me that my vehicle is not covered under the recall. My question is why? a known steering issue for 2012 Explorers is clearly evident on my vehicle. Seems Ford is passing the blame for a known issue! I must note that there are only 45,000 miles on this vehicle and for this to fail with so few miles (while I was driving) is unacceptable. It is unclear to me why Ford would not cover this under the recall especially since it is a major safety issue. Nhtsa campaign number: 14v286000.
Purchased new 2020 Ford Explorer st and the steering failed 3 times in 5 months. Returned the car to the dealer each time for repairs. In all cases some or all steering went out while I was driving the vehicle. On June 15th I had a severe wreck and totaled the car as I tried to navigate a slight curve in the road.

On February 18, 2020, as I was driving on the interstate, a warning appeared on the dashboard that read steering fault service now. When I exited the interstate and found a safe place to park two warnings appeared on the dashboard that read steering loss stop safely and service advance trac. Once I was stopped the steering completely failed. Seems to be an ongoing issue with the Explorer even after the 2011-13 recall.
Loss of ease of steering driving in frigid wind chill night time north dakota weather. My wife was strong enough to strong arm steer and drive the vehicle the 40 plus miles home. A definite safety issue- an internet search revealed numerous complaints and complete steering failure on the electronic steering apparatus installed on this make and model. The repair costs could amount to $3000. The fact that these problems and steering apparatus failure is occurring on lower mileage vehicles is very concerning. Our vehicle has 56,700 odometer miles. This issue is definitely a safety issue and Ford motor company must be held accountable. The nearest Ford dealership is 75 miles away from our rural farm location- I expect I will have to transport our vehicle to the dealership for repairs.
I purchased this vehicle in April of 2019, with about 31k miles on the odometer. It was a returned lease. In January of 2020, at just over 41k miles, the steering gear failed as I was pulling into the parking lot at work. I had no problem turning the wheel to the left, but as soon as I turned the wheel even slightly right, there was an awful clicking noise, almost like something was grinding in the wheel well. I limped it over to the Ford dealership a mile away and they told me the steering gear had failed. I was outside of the 3 yr/36000 mi warranty, and apparently the 5 yr/60000 mi powertrain warranty only covers the steering housing, not the gear itself, so I was on the hook for the entire fix - $2200 at this point. The service advisor at Ford said it wasn't due to any neglect or "outside influence" - it just failed and there's nothing I could have done to prevent it. I find it hard to believe that something so catastrophic and expensive should be failing at 4 yrs/41k mi. Ford can't actually expect people to replace a $2200 part every 4 yrs/41k mi, right?! luckily I was doing about 5 mph when the gear failed - other people have been driving at highway speeds, and this issue is surely going to injure and/or kill people, if it hasn't already. Ford needs to rectify this issue!!.
Steering gear failing when driving on highway.
While traveling at about 50 mph on a 4 lane highway, the steering of the car began to be unresponsive. In slippery conditions I reduced the speed and was able to negotiate my return to home. After shutting the car off, I restarted and the steering wheel would not move at all. When the car was being loaded on the tow truck, the front wheels could not be steered at all. Dealer replaced the steering computer but I was told the mechanical steering mechanism had failed also. No one was hurt or accident occurred, but the cascading problem created a dangerous situation.
Steering system failure appeared in my car and I could no longer move the steering as it got too hard for no reason, I don't even want to imagine what would have happened if I had driven on the highway with my family I think it is the defect of the Ford for which Ford should be responsible for solving this problem to prevent crashes.
The power steering was inoperative when stationary and the vehicle was parked overnight in my garage and temp was below freezing. The steering was locked up and you could not turn the steering wheel. After the vehicle was running for about 20 to 30 minutes (trying to move steering wheel back & forth) it would let you then to turn the steering wheel. It did this 3 times and I had a Ford dealer check it out. They replaced the steering sector and it repaired the problem. One of the times the steering locked up it also was binding when I started moving and turning the steering wheel. I feel if the steering sector failed in about 4 years is safety item and should be recalled and owners refunded for this type of failure. It cost about $2300. 00 to have it repaired. If this failure happened when driving I would have lost 100% of the steering.
Tl-the contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the steering wheel failed and the filure occurred intemittently. The contact stated that the steering wheel became difficult to turn and the power steering control module error light illuminated while the failrue occurred. The vhicle was teaken to toliver Ford of mineola 1311 south pacific direction, mineola, texas 75773 phone number (903)-569 9421 to have a diagnostic perforemed that located the failure code at the power steering control moddule and the steering gear needed to be replaced. The manufacturer advised that the VIN was no included in NHTSA campaign number 14v28600 (steering). The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failuremilease was 95,000. Li.
Driving down a highway road approximately speed of 60 mph and warning lights on dash came on "steering assist failure" and a couple others. Lost total control of steering was unable to turn the wheel. Vehicle was diagnosed at fremont Ford of fremont michigan said to of had a faulty steering rack as its electronic when it fails it fails. Well 2100$ later its repaired.
The vehicle has 34,450 miles on it and was purchased oct 1 2016 but is a 2017 model. The steering failed on October 13th while I was in estes park colorado. The vehicle had several issues just prior to the failure with a warning the traction control had stopped working followed by a hill start assist failure and the steering loss stop safely. I've attached pictures of the warnings. This failure occurred 14 days after the 36 month warranty ended. Thankfully I had parked the vehicle just prior to the steering failing as I would have been driving down a potentially dangerous mountain canyon within the next 10 minutes. The Ford dealer thus far has refused to cover the repair to this known issue which is a serious safety issue.

Tl- the contact owns a 2011 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving 35 mph, when the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact stated the power steering assist fault and service advance trace warning light was illuminated. The contact stated she turned off the vehicle multiple times but the steering with failure to function. The vehicle was towed to her residence. The contact called local dealer bluebonnet Ford Lincoln parts and service located at 351 n interstate 35 frontage rd, new braunfels, TX 78130,(830) 606-8011, were made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired as of yet. The manufacturer has been informed of failure. The failure mileage was 191, 000. Dp.
At just 36,300 miles the electronic steering rack has failed. A simple google search shows numerous Ford vehicles with this electronic steering system having issues with as many or less miles. Of course it is out of the bumper to bumper coverage at this point. The steering mechanism felt as though it was a manual steering system when it failed as I was on my way home from work on a very busy highway. The wheel doesn't return to center after turning and needs to be brought back manually. I'm glad this didn't result in a crash but easily could have. Ford should issue a recall before someone gets killed. At a cost of over $2000 dollars for the repair, I haven't been able to afford it and have had to rely on others to get back and forth to work.
We experienced popping noises on the front end while turning at intersections, pulling in and out of driveway and parking spots. Due to having to replace worn tires at 32k, we took to local quick lane at our st joseph Ford dealership. We reported the popping noises at this time and requested it be looked at while they replaced tires. There were no finds at this time regarding what was making the noises. We continued to experience occasional popping noises while turning at intersections, pulling in/out of driveway and parking spots. On 8/8/19, we took to same dealership service department to perform fsa19s17, a recall where the rear suspension toe link was replaced at 38205mi. A 4-wheel alignment was also done at this time. On 8/23/19, we noticed the popping had gotten worse. On 8/26/19, the steering briefly seized rounding a corner at approximately 30-35mph. It scared my wife, as she felt a brief loss of control of the vehicle. On 8/28/19 we dropped it off at the same dealership and reported that popping was worse and the steering had seized. After the test drives and assessment they called to report that the steering rack was failing and would need replaced. They quoted $2900. 00 for repairs. We have not agreed to pay for this repair. We have since discovered this is a well known issue by Ford and other vehicle owners of the same make and model. We are reporting in hopes that Ford will recall to rectify this serious safety issue.
Power steering recall of 2014- my vehicle was recalled for steering was fixed under a recall in 2014 the extended the warranty to 10 years of 150,000 miles. My vehicle keeps showing a power steering assist default. It has been to the dealer and they claim it is not saving a code so they can't do anything. What is gonna happen when it happens at 70 mph and me or one of my family members is killed. They need to honor their warranty and fix it. I can not drive it to dealer once ther steering fails and they tell me this is the only way they can fix it.
Takata recall I have a Ford Explorer 2015 mileage approximately 42,865 . I have had 2 occasions where the steering has failed. Last time was August 17,2019. I had no control over . The steering . I was traveling 30 miles per hour and was able to stop the car before having an accident . I contacted paramount automotive group in valdese nc August 20 2019 and spoke to the service person about this serious issue. The service person said to bring the Explorer in to be checked out. I also was able to get a Ford Explorer suspension recall fix to be worked in as well. I left the Explorer and was contacted by the service person that the steering had to be replaced and the steering not covered under warranty at a cost of $1,750. Warranty ended at 36,000. I have done some research to out that there are a large number of complaints being filed for low mileage for 2015 Fordexplorers with steering issues. I have plans to contact Ford customer satisfaction to this serious defected steering problem. I have concerns with the Ford replacement steering that it may as well have future issues. I do not know at this time if Ford has made any announcements to correct and not harm the owner. I need to make all aware that a serious accident is going to occur where someone will get hurt or killed.
Tl the contact owns a 2015 Ford Explorer. While the contact's girlfriend was driving 50 mph, the steering wheel seized and could not be turned. The driver stopped in the middle of the highway, turned off the engine, and restarted the vehicle. The steering returned to normal and the driver drove home safely. In addition, the traction control indicator illuminated and "service advancetrac" and "steering assist failed" appeared on the instrument panel. The contact called miller brothers Ford (9035 baltimore national pike, ellicott city, MD 21042, (410) 505-8633) where the mechanic stated that the failure would have to occur in their presence in order to repair the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 77,000.
Since March 2019, I had been experiencing a slight stiffness in the power steering. By may, the traction sign came on then went off. When I asked the dealer about this, they said there was a 2-3 week wait to have the car looked at. It didn't happen often, but infrequently. Then one day in late June, when I turned on the car and backed down the driveway, there was no power in the steering. I drove back up the driveway and turned off the car. Then turned it back on and all was fine. In late July it happened again and early August it completely went out. I was able to get the car in at the dealership on a Friday and they found it was the steering gear failed internally. They finished repairing the car by the following Tuesday. When the car was at 141,000 miles I had asked if there were any recalls that haven't been done on this car. They said no. My questions does a safety recall expire?.
