At 40,906 miles the steering totally failed. I was driving home from work and lost all steering capability, the wheel effectively locked up. Towed to dealer. A steering module inside the gearbox failed. From what I have read, this is a common issue with the epds system. The entire gear assembly was replaced for a total of $2,234. 22 with labor. After over a dozen different calls to fomoco customer service, they agreed to compensate me a total of $525. 00 this is an extremely dangerous issue and I am concerned it will happen again.

Paint bubbling on aluminum surfaces hood and door skins, referred back to dealer who repaints and reoccurs until out of warrantee. Steering failure intermittent accutrac control requiring towing and computer reset. Can fail while driving resulting in no or difficult steering. Multiple times reset no charge. Estimate to repair $2500.
While driving my Explorer down a city street at approx 45mph, the steering became extremely tight. A warning light saying steering assist fault came in and then the traction control off light came on. Immediately after both of those lights came on a red light came on saying steering failure service required came on and I completely lost the ability to steer the SUV. I managed to get it off the road safely and stopped. The steering wheel would not turn at all. I contacted the Ford dealership near me and told them what happened. They said there is a recall on 2011-2013 and 2015-2017 Ford Explorers but not the 2014 and what I was describing is what happens to the other models years under recall. There needs to be a recall on the 2014 Explorers for the steering gear assembly as with the surrounding model years. Had I been a less experienced driver this would have caused a crash and could have injured or killed myself or other people on the road. The failure of this system is dangerous to not only the driver but to other people on the road.

While I was driving my vehicle on icy road conditions, my vehicle's steering failed without notice. Thankfully I was driving slower due to road conditions. I was unable to steer my vehicle down the road. This was the steering gear that went causing the issue. When I contacted Ford, I was told it's not under warranty. Not our problem. The vehicle is only a 2015.

I show Ford has a recall #14v286000 dated 5/29/14 for steering: electric power assist system failure. My vehicle has had the steering assist fail twice while I've been driving and this recall does not show up under my VIN. I find it ironic that the same year, make, model vehicle has this recall issued, and the failure has happened to me twice, yet there is no recall for my specific VIN. I just spent $1,700 at north county Ford in vista CA to have this problem fixed, the parts alone were $1,350. I ask that the NHTSA look into this recall further and asses whether there were vehicles missed in this recall. I'd be happy to speak with someone further. I can be reached via cell phone 760. 458. 6080.
With less than 30,000 miles, my steering began to bind when turned fully to the left or right. This was only noticeable at low speeds, but due to my concerns about the safety hazards of steering failures I took it to dealer for an evaluation. They reported that the steering module had failed and it would cost >$2300 to repair. My warranty expired due to time (42 months) so unless Ford offers a warranty extension I will have to pay an exorbitant amount for what should never fail - certainly not with less than 30,000 miles. I do not know what would have happened had I not brought the car in immediately, but the need to replace the steering system suggests it was very serious.
While traveling on the interstate my vehicle swayed into another lane involuntarly. I went into the dealership and I was initially told my alignment was due. I explained the issue and asked if it was thoroughly checked. I was told yes. I left the dealership only to have my vehicle almost flip over while turning. I went back in and after checking I am told the steering gear failed.
Noticed loud grinding noise while turning right driving less than 10mph. No lights have come on yet. Took it to mechanic and he told me that the steering rack is failing and will need to be replaced. I noticed that the 2011,12,13 recalled but doesn't cover the same problem that 2014's are having.
Car did not feel right after about 10 miles of highway driving but I didn't know what was happening. It was difficult to steer. A few miles after several warnings came on telling me there is a steering failure and to stop and get immediate service. I pulled off the highway and had the car towed and it's at the dealer now.
Noticed loud grinding noise while turning either left or right while traveling around 40mph. No lights have come on yet. Took it to mechanic and he told me that the steering rack is failing and will need to be replaced. Ford quoted me roughly $1500 for the rack and labor, this is crazy that the 2011,12,13 recall doesn't cover the same problem that 2014's are having.
Internal electronic failure in the steering rack. Explorer is two years old with only 44,173 miles. Steering failed while driving!!.
Tl- the contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that there was an abnormally loud grinding noise heard coming from the area of the steering wheel as the failure was progressing. In addition, the steering wheel had no play when turning left which had required that force be applied to the steering wheel to ensure that the steering wheel was able to be maneuvered in either a left or right direction while operating the vehicle. Sunset Ford, 11700 gravois rd, st. Louis, mo 63127, (314) 843-4431 was notified of the failure and the contact was waiting to determine if there was potentially a faulty power steering control module and was waiting for the manufacturer to determine the guidelines for the dealer which had scheduled an appointment. The contact was not included in NHTSA action number: pe12017 (steering) and NHTSA campaign number: 14v286000n however the vehicle exhibited the same failure as related to the investigation complaints and the recall campaign from the manufacturer. The vehicle was not repaired yet. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 85,000. Dyd.
While driving my 2016 Ford Explorer on a state hwy at 55 mph, suddenly bells and warning on dash indicating steering failure issue. Within 1 block, I was unable to steer at all. Had to be towed. Told by dealership that the power steering gear was bad. Told by the dealership the cost to repair would be $2200. Vehicle has 76,000 miles. Very unsafe condition had it happened in heavy traffic. Could have resulted in injury or death.
2014 Ford Explorer sport. On August 12 after driving @ 1 hour, I briefly turned the vehicle off. Restarted the car within 5 minutes to back into my garage and received a "steering assist fault" warning and the steering wheel seized. Turned the vehicle off again, let it cool a while, then was able to back it into the garage. The failure mileage was 46,022. This was the 2nd time the steering failed with the first instance on Aug 2, 2018. The vehicle was taken to marin Ford Aug 28 (6995 redwood blvd, novato, CA 94945 (415-914-1118) where it was determined the electronic power steering (epas) unit needs to be replaced with @ cost of $2500. The marin Ford service advisor, roger, indicated he contacted Ford and was told this would be covered under warranty or by any recall. Upon researching this issue, it appears it is not uncommon, certainly for older model Explorers and other Ford vehicles with epas steering. It seems there may be a known heating problem affecting the epas thermal connectors that Ford has taking some efforts to mitigate, but not correct (heat shielding, air channeling, etc). Steering failed at 65 mph not allowing me turn the vehicle. Hurt wrist trying to avoid others cars.
Second steering failure incident. Ref cpmplaint 11111323 inching up to stop sign when wheel froze. Dash error as follows: "steering fault service now(this was in red) "service advance trak" (this was in yellow) put car in park. Turned engine off and restarted then regained power steering.
While vehicle was in motion (parking), error power steering assist fault and service advancetrac error illuminated on the dashboard. No longer able to steer car, the car did not default into manual steering mode. The car will only go straight. The car was towed to the dealer. The dealer reported that the module in the steering gear lost communication and that the entire steering gear needs to be replaced as a result. Nhtsa issued recall id #14v286000 on some Ford Explorer vehicles for some steering gear failures, however the Ford dealer states that my vehicle was not included in that recall in their oasis system.
Tl-the contact owns a 2014 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving at 55 mph the steering wheel failed to move in the right or left position. The next day the vehicle failed to start. The oil pressure, starting system failure, traction control, engine coolant warning indicators were illuminated. The contact called a local dealer expressway Ford located at 3800 highway 62 w, mt vernon, in 47620 (812) 838-4366 where informed that the vehicle was not covered under a warranty or recall. The manufacturer was notified of the issue and informed the contact to have the vehicle towed to the local dealer. Additionally, the contact was referred to NHTSA. The failure mileage was 120,336. Ap.
Steering gear failed causing the car to be very difficult to steer at low speeds, especially when turning right.
Tl the contact owns a 2016 Ford Explorer limited. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds he heard an abnormal noise and no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer (haldeman Ford 2443 lehigh st, allentown, PA) who diagnosed the vehicle and stated that the steering rack had failed and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was approximately 31,910. Jc.
Electric power steering (epas) completely failed again. This time I drove through deep water over the roadway (16" deep). A day later a noise (like an un-lubricated roller bearing turning) could be heard every time the steering wheel was turned substantially (like when parking). After 4-days the steering system, accutrak, and steering failure messages came on the information screen while driving, but I was still able to drive without effort. I was able to drive to my destination, but when I switched off the vehicle and restarted it, the power steering was totally dead! it required superman strength to turn wheel and drive. Those are the facts. My opinion is that Ford's epas steering system is terribly designed, and dangerous! when an epas fails, it should not be monumentously harder to steer than a failed hydraulic power steering system!!! (you can drive older cars with failed hydraulic power steering forever!) I am very amazed that more people are not dead because of this defective system.
The electronic steering gear abruptly failed. Pulling out of my driveway. Steering stopped and received light warning. steering loss stop safely lost all function of steering and traction. Dealership says 2234. 00 to repair. This was a recall on the 2013 vehicles and older. I could have easily been on highway the day before with my kids. It would have caused severe accident, to lose steering at 65 mph.
Tl-the contact owns a 2015 Ford Explorer. The contact says while driving at 5mph the steering wheel began to make a noise. No warning lights illuminated in the vehicle. The vehicle was not towed. The vehicle has not been repaired yet. The contact did get the vehicle diagnosed at jps Ford (318) 263-2084 and the results came back as steering gear asembly failure. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage 51,000. Jw.
Steering failed while driving in motion resulting in a close call when crossing intersection having oncoming traffic to interstate ramp, evidently a major safety risk, due to electronic steering rack design issue. Estimate of over $2,253. 00 repair with $1,343. 00 part at local Ford dealership. ---thanks,.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 Ford Explorer. While starting the vehicle, the steering locked up and failed to maneuver. Also, the power steering assist warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer (lugoff Ford, 979 highway 1 south, lugoff, SC 29078), but the failure was unable to be duplicated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 160,000.

Electric assist steering has started to fail. This causes periodic, sudden loss of steering assist. Without assist, the steering in very difficult to manage and represents a safety issue. There is a recall, but Ford claims all problems associated with the recall were fixed a few months prior to our build date. Apparently not. Now they want 10% of the value of the car for repair.
