1 Tank Assembly problem of the 2010 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/16/2014

While driving on interstate 295 just south of brunswick, maine my 2010 Ford Explorer lost all power and rapidly decelerated and the steering wheel became very difficult to turn. I did manage to pull over to the side of the highway just before losing all power, but I could not restart my vehicle. I then had my vehicle towed to a Ford service center, and Ford indicated that the problem was caused by friction which had worn away the electrical tape and wire casing of the electrical node and the wiring harness around the fuel tank. I am concerned about the safety of other drivers should a similar incident happen under heavier highway traffic conditions.

2 Tank Assembly problem of the 2008 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/01/2013

2008 Ford Explorer. Consumer writes in regards to having problems filling the gas tank. The consumer stated the pump hose would click off automatically, as if signaling the tank was full, even though that was not the case. The consumer stated it took approximately 20 minutes to fill the tank. The check engine light illuminated shortly after, it started happening, but went off a short while later. A flashing red light and a warning to shut down the engine occurred. After shutting down the engine and restarting it, the problem seemed to go away. The red light issue occurred twice. The consumer discovered Ford issued a TSB several years ago, over the problem, as it apparently occurred frequently enough in the market place.

4 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/18/2012

After filling up my tank, the fuel gauge dropped to empty, and the check engine soon light came on. Also the system that tells me how many miles to empty only shows dashed instead of an actual number. I have looked online and this seems to be a common and pricey problem. The day after I filled up, it jumped to half a tank and then back to empty. This is very unsafe and I don't know if this will cause other problems. I have only had the truck 3 months.

6 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/07/2011

Was driving down the road about 200 miles from home and car was doing fine. All of the sudden I lost my gas gauge and the miles to emply reading "---". I have never had this problem. Then about 8 miles from my 314 mile destination it worked again, in which it read half a tank. Then after refueling, the gas gauge did the same thing. It has been that way for a day now and I try to go about 200 miles and then top it off again.

7 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/20/2011

I own a 2006 Ford Explorer. The vehicle experience a failure on the fuel fill system in 2008. I was not able to put more than a gallon of gas in at a time, wait for awhile, add another gallon, etc as the fuel fill would act as though the tank was full. Took to a dealer and had it replaced based on TSB#07253. Experienced the same failure again now in 2011 and brought it back to the dealer and was told since it was more than 12 months since the original replacement I had to pay the deductible again to have tthe work done.

8 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/01/2011

Having problems with fluid overflowing to the overflow tank, overheating and cylinder misfire readings.

9 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/07/2011

I purchased a 2005 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4. The day after I purchased it, I filled up the gas tank and 20 miles later my gas gauge all of a sudden read e and my service engine soon light came on, the repair shop states the fuel sending unit is bad and the repair is going to be expensive to fix. I went online and found out this is a very common problem with Ford. Why has there not been a recall for this? I sure hope I am not left stranded on the side of the road.

10 Tank Assembly problem of the 2008 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/18/2011

My engine light came on and I was unable to put gas in the vehicle. I took it to 3 local mechanics and all 3 concurred that due to the design of the gas tank vent hose (water from the road) has ended up in the gas. This in turn contaminated the gas canister and gas vent valve. To fix the problem they will be replacing the vent hose, gas vent valve and canister. This is information was obtained through running 3 different diagnostics and receiving the service bulletin (TSB 07-25-3). I contacted Ford and they stated there is a service bulletin on this issue but they will not help with the repairs since my warranty is out. This is a known defective part that they could have replaced when being notified of the defect and it would have prevented the water getting into the vent valve and canister causing this expensive repair. I will be going with the cheapest repair which is $609. 00 and to the average working person this is a big expense for something that could have been prevented. I believe Ford should be made to repair this issue has been reported by consumers and their poorly designed part caused the problem not the consumers. Thank you for investigating my complaint.

14 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/19/2008

Fuel gauge suddenly drops to empty and service engine soon light comes on. Happened in July '08 and came right back on. Thought it was a "fluke" thing with my fuel float in tank. Happened again last week and this week. Decided to do some "researching" and came to the conclusion that this is common with this year/make/model. Not happy! purchased new and only has 42,000 miles!.

17 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/01/2008

2005 Ford Explorer fuel gauge malfunction: started about a year ago. Was intermittent at first, but is now constant. Fuel gauge registers empty until tank is about half full, after which the gauge works properly. Service engine light stays on. A scan of the internet indicates this is a very common problem and Ford has no program in place to fix it. Since the gauge is causing the service engine light to stay on, that light cannot alert me to other potential failures. Cost to repair is approximately $500.

18 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/05/2008

2005 Ford Explorer gas gauge failure. 2nd time it has happened in two years. The first time it happened I took it back to the dealer and they had it fixed. Now it has occurred again. The gas gauge all of a sudden drops to empty and the 'service engine' light comes on. I am driving with my kids in the car and don't know how much gas I have left in the tank.

19 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/05/2006

Purchased a 2006 Ford Explorer on 5/6/06 and took a road trip to alabama and on the way back around ocala,FL, we started smelling gas smell as we got out of the car and walked around it. We were always stopped at convenient stores, which have gas pumps and didn't think much of it. We did look under vehicle and didn't see anything. We kept driving south to come home and around tampa,FL. . The smell got a little more strong. Luckily we made it home w/out blowing up. Once we pulled in our driveway, the smell was really bad. My husband got his flashlight and looked under the vehicle and gas was dripping out pretty steady. It was midnight on Sunday and we new that the Ford dealership was closed at that time, so we went to bed and first thing Monday morning, we called the dealership and then the towing truck. They told us to get fire dept out here to drain gas . The fire dept came and used putty to stop leak so we could have truck towed. We had truck towed to the Ford dealership to be fixed and once they looked at it, we were told that it was our fault and they would not cover under warranty. They said we ran over something. We would have known if we ran over something and if we hit rocks or pebbles while going down interstate and it caused that, then Ford has some serious fuel tank issues. We ended up turning over to our insurance CO and paid to get truck fixed, which is fine. When our insurance adjuster looked at trucks fuel tank, he made us aware that there was never a skid plate put on to protect fuel tank. Per dealership, this is optional and we were never told about it. Supposedly, the fuel tanks are built now where they do not require a skid plate unless it is a four wheel drive. My families safety was put at risk and nobody at Ford that we talked to seemed to care and I think this should be investigated a little further, which is why I am writing this and letting you all know.

20 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/15/2006

Gas guage failure. On the way home from buying the SUV,the gas hand would not work. Returned car to dealer. The dealer furnished me a new car until the car was fixed. Two weeks later the same thing happened. Went to a different dealer and the mechanic had a bulletion that Ford had issued saying there was a problem with the gas guage because sulfur in the gas was causing the problem. Ford recommends using chevron additive in the gas to solve the problem. The mechanic said the vehicle had 13000 miles on it the frist time the gas hand quit working. The car had 17000 miles when the hand quit working for the second time. The mechanic installed a new guage inside the fuel tank. This will only help for a period of time. If this happened on the freeway and you were out of gas it could be serious.

21 Tank Assembly problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/20/2005

30 Tank Assembly problem of the 1999 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/17/1999

I dont understand why the 1999 Ford Explorers do not have a shield protecting the gas tank. The 1997 and 1998 have a shield. If I did not have a full tank of gas I could have burned to death. Something flew up from the road and struck my gas tank. I was sick for 4 hours from the gas fumes. Please see what can be done about this. It gives me a false sense of security knowing that my fuel tank is exposed the way it is.

31 Tank Assembly problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/23/1998

When filling tank with gasoline, it does not take the last 4 gallons. The dealer said that this is due to pressure from the gas vapors. If filling vehicle very slowly, gasoline would take. 98 model has this problem corrected, owner believes Ford to correct the 97 model. . Et.

32 Tank Assembly problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/07/1998

I was driving Explorer on the freeway at about 65mph with a full tank of 21 gallons fuli saw at the last moment a type of hand tool in my lane. It looked like a wrench or something. Because of the size I couldn't see it until the last moment. I did not swerve to miss it because I did not have time to check for a clear lane to swerve into, and did not want to just move over quickly and cause an accident with a car next to me. Also I did not think that running over this small tool would have such a serious out come. I only heard a small thump as the tool went under my tire. Then less than a mile later when I got off at my exit and stopped at a red light, a man that was at the light next to me ran over to my window and began pounding on it and yelling a t me to get out of my car because it was dumping gasoline all over. I got out and even with the fast response of the fire department and the highway patrol my car had dumped gas all over the road. It is a wonder that even with the car (from driving on the highway) the gasoline did not catch fire. If it had caught fire not only myself, but all those stopped at the red light could have been seriously injured or killed. When Ford was making the repairs they informed me that my Explorer does not come with skid plates that would have prevented this type of accident, they stated that they are standard on the 4x4 (which mine is not) and an option on my 2wd. They then stated that this kind of problem can happen very easily and the best protection is to pay the extra and have them install the skid plates which you bet your life I did because I already risked my own more than I ever care too. Now tell me how it is that they can know that there is a serious chance that a person could have a small rock or object fly up and rupture a gas tank and cause a fire and that the owner never knew that the car had no protection from this problem. If they knew this was a problem why dont they need to put the skid plates on all of the cars.

33 Tank Assembly problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer
