The check engine light went on on my 2011 Ford Explorer on 11/21/11 and took it to the dealer at which time I was told it was a leak in the gas cap (but this car has a cap-less gas tank) check engine light went off and back on within 1 week, took it back on 11/26/11 and at that time they said they got the same reading with the gas cap issue and they changed a solenoid. Check engine light went off only to go back on 3 days later. Dropped my car off at dealer on 12/3/11 for 3rd time and now they told me they keep getting same error code and they sent issue to techs in detroit for assistance. I will be dropping my car off today (12/7/11) again to see if they can fix it. Check engine light remains on.

I'm the origonal owner and have 76,306 miles on my Explorer. I noticed a gas smell. I took it in to the dealer. Dealer found a gas leak where the filler hose attaches to the gas tank. The plastic piece that is part of the gas tank had many cracks/fractures that allowed fuel to leak out. The only repair option is to replace the entire gas tank at a cost to me of $2,009. 00. I feel this is a design flaw and a safety issue. The gas tank holds 22. 5 gallons of fuel that could flow onto the hot exhaust pipe if the plastic filler piece failed completely.

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Explorer. While filling the vehicle with gasoline, the vehicle would spew gas back out of the filler tube, and then drain back into the fuel tank. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where he was advised there were no recalls on his vehicle and repairs would be at the owners expense. The contact felt this could potentially risk his safety. The failure mileage was 48,000 and the current was 53,000.

I have a 2003 Ford Explorer. I have had so much trouble with the check fuel cap light coming on, it has been replaced twice, then the technician reset the warning light. In December 2008 the car just stopped taking fuel, it seemed like it was full. It would take me a half hour to fill the tank. I took it to the Ford dealer, they said they cleaned all the sensors in and around the fuel tank, I paid a bill of $370. The next time I filled it with gas, it did the same exact thing again. I took it back to the dealer, they put a new filler neck on it and charged me $260. It worked for a short time, then in February it started doing it again! I did not want to put any more money in it, after about a month of that, it fixed itself. Now, the check fuel cap light is on again, and also the service engine soon light. This has been, without a doubt, the worst car I have ever purchased in my entire life, I purchased it new and it has been trouble from day one. The service manager said I was having this trouble putting the gas in it because I have put a lot of gas in it. . . . Excuse me, you can bet he wouldn't have said that to my husband if he took it in for service!.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that every time gasoline is pumped into the vehicle, fuel would spew out and splash onto the contact. The dealer stated that the repairs would cost $1,000, even though there was a recall for the 2002 Ford expedition. The contact feels that the manufacturer should be responsible for the repairs. The current mileage was 70,000 and failure mileage was 50,000.
My fuel tank light keeps coming on, stating that I need to check my cap. When I check the cap it is on tight and have no idea why the light comes on. . It's not on all the time. . .
The contact owns a 2004 Ford Explorer. After filling the vehicle with gas and driving a few miles, the fuel cap pressure light illuminates and the engine shuts off. The contact has to exit the vehicle and retighten the filler cap, which then allows the engine to restart. The failure has occurred twice within 3 or 4 gas tank fill-ups and usually while driving 50 mph. He has not yet taken the vehicle to the dealer. Failure mileage was 29,000 and current mileage was 29,500. Updated 12/12/07.

2002 Ford Explorer XLT. I can not put gas on it because it overflows rapidly and throws the gas out of the tank. I was told that it was a common problem with the tank breader and it would cost around $ 600. 00 to fix it. It is a safety issue because the gas comes right back at you and can cause a major fire. Ford should voluntary fix this defective problem at no charge.
Consumer indicated the gas tank cap was not tightened securely, which caused the engine light to illuminate.
