36 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/28/2013

This would be the second time a spark plug has popped out of the engine on my 2005 Ford F-150 with the 4. 6 liter v8 engine it. The first spark plug popped out in August 2011 and now it has happened again in September 2013. I have heard that I am not the only person this is happened to. This seems to be a reoccurring problem in not only the 4. 6 liter v-8 but the 5. 4 liter v-8 and the 6. 8 liter v-10. With this problem happening over and over again why hasn¿t Ford done anything about it. Fordproblems. Com suggests that ¿Ford insists the problem is due to improper torqueing of new plugs or any number of other reasons. However many people have had the original factory spark plugs eject from the engine, which indicates there is a defect with the engine & cylinder head design. The repair is relatively easy - do not be fooled by a dealer offering to repair the issue for $700 or more. An inexpensive helicoil kit will do the trick. Also, we do not recommend simply re-tapping the spark plug threads because the threads are probably too damaged already & the spark plug may just blow out again causing more damage. Spark plug ejection is dangerous because fuel vapor starts coming out the spark plug hole, which is clearly a serious safety issue. The fuel vapor can be ignited by the loose spark plug and in fact there have been a small number of cases reported of engine fires due to spark plug ejection/blowout. ¿ I as well as other Ford owners would like the NHTSA to look into and force a recall order to Ford motor company to get these issue fixed, repair, and remembers all affected by this issue.

Failure Date: 02/07/2013

2005ford F-150 4. 6 triton v8 spark plug ejected blowing out coil while driving. This resulting in a stripped head and needing to replace the engine. With research on the web seems this is a common problem with this model engine with many complaits that Ford will not acknowledge.

42 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

43 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2012

Bought this Ford f150 used with 95,000 miles. I was told the plugs and fuel filter needed replaced by the 100,000 range. My local garage spent hours replacing one plug and when they checked with the local Ford dealer about the problem they were told it was a long on going problem. The dealer said, they could remove the plugs but it would be $500. 00 dollars to start and if the plugs broke off in the heads the cost could be as much as $3,000. 00 if they had to remove the heads. Research shows me this has been going on for ever and Ford refuses to repair or recall the f150 5. 4 3v spark plug problem. Build up around the base of the plugs from poor head design is costing us consumers thousands. People are geting hurt just trying to remove these plugs. I feel Ford should recall the f150 with this engine and repair or replace the engine heads with a plug that can be replaced at a fair price not this stupid thousands people are spending.

44 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2012

After the truck passed 76000 I started to notice a tick/knock in the engine. I brought it to Ford and they told me this was normal noise for these engines, to me this was no normal. Now the tick/knock/rattle has become worse and I have been told by Ford I would need a new engine. This is a very very common situation with the 2004-2008 5. 4l 3v engines. What us Ford owners would like is a recall on the cam phasers and vct solenoids. Ford has redesigned both of these parts so they know this was causing big issues with owners of the mentioned make/model/year Fords. I do not know how a company, an american company, can get away with selling vehicles where the internal parts of the engine, and american made engine, go faulty before the odometer hit's 100,000 miles. There are normal wear and tear replaceable parts on every car, but when internal engine components fail with a vehicle that is just 7 years old that is not acceptable!.

45 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2012

This 5. 4 liter v8 motor required replacement of spark plugs (check engine message flashed on the dashboard). The spark plugs had welded themselves to the engine head, ultimately requiring the removel of the engine head to extract spark plug-cost $2,000 in additional cost to consumer. Internet is full of similar reports. Mechanics at Ford dealership and midas report frequent encounter with this issue with similar result. I have contacted Ford and they claim no liability, stating NHTSA hasn't required them to do a recall.

47 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2012

Cross-reference Ford TSB 07-13-5: water leak from ac has flooded the passenger floor pan and all associated carpeting and padding. Significant health hazard exists in warm climates due to the proliferation of respiratory hazards including but not limited to legionnaire's disease. The item should be a recall for this reason. I have lost use of my truck due to the inability to sufficiently dry the padding - I have had the vehicle drying for one week in hot florida sun to no avail.

49 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2012

I was driving on a residential street (gray st. )approaching a busy two lane street that was one way heading south (armenia avenue) in tampa, florida. As I was approaching the stop sign, my foot was on the brake. Preparing to stop, but instead of stopping the engine revved and accelerated into the lanes of traffic traveling south. I was standing on the brake so hard that my leg was shaking when I finally stopped. I stopped the vehicle by depressing the emergency brake and the rpm's finally came down and the engine returned to normal. I was so nervous because if there had been cars coming I would have been hit on the driver's side. The street is usually very heavy with traffic. I was very lucky that there was no one close or I may not be writing this today. A few days later I came to the same corner and a bicyclist crossed right in front of me. If this had happened on April 12th, I would have run over the bicyclist. I drove around the block very slowly continuing to stop and rpm's were normal. I really thought everyone would think I was crazy for what had just happened. When the Ford dealership found the problem on the computer I was relieved to know that there was a problem that could be fixed. It was the throttle body. A month later our other Ford F-150, a 2007, had the same problem and this time my husband was driving it. There was a report on this vehicle also. Ford is not recognizing that there is a problem and other vehicles are being brought in for the same issues which could result in serious injury or fatalities to innocent parties due to some defect in the throttle body's on the F-150's. My report number on our 2007 F-150 is 10459967.

50 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2012

On three separate occasions, my Ford 2005 f150 king ranch supercrew 4x4 engine suddenly died while driving at approximately 55-60mph. On all three occasions, I fortunately was able to pull over to the side of the road with the engine died and no power steering. If I had not been in the right hand lane and able to pull off of the road, then an rear engine collision would more than likely occurred if I would have been in an outer lane of a multiple lane highway. After the third occasion this past week, I took the vehicle to the Ford dealership in rockwall, texas where it cost me $700. 00 to have throttle body/motor assembly replaced. My obd readings at home were p2104 and p2112. If not already, this issue is a fatally waiting to happen. Lots of chatter on internet of similar issues.

51 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2012

Engine started ticking ended up being cam phasers and needed new motor Ford knows its a well known problem but refuses to stand behind their products. Was told it was normal engine wear which I find hard to believe at 100,000miles with recommended maintenance done to vehicle class action lawsuit would be the best for all involved when it comes to this product 7000 dollars to replace motor.

52 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

Ford factory spark plug breaks within the head causing potential internal engine damage. An extremely common issue that has lead to the invention of a special tool used just because f the issue. Commonly reaching hundreds and even thousands of dollars to repair. Ford has changed their TSB from changing plugs at 100k miles to 60k miles. However by the time a issue was noticed many of us owners have over the 60k mile mark.

53 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2011

Auto ran great, fuel milage real good, then sparkplug blew out without any advance indication of a problem.

54 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2011

Vehicle misfired on acceleration on highway. Was aware of spark plug ejections w/ my particular year and model after going through camshaft phaser repairs. (2005 F-150 w/ 5. 4l triton engine). Mechanic suggested replacing all factory spark plugs w/ new designed spark plug kit to eliminate ejection problem. I did so at a cost of $831. 52. Costs to date $4729. 25 within the last 2 months on a 2005 vehicle. Unacceptable. Researched on internet anfd found this to be a very well known problem. No mention of it from the dealer upon purchase. Ford has turned their back on this (and the camshaft phaser defect). I am a small contractor whose livelihood depends on this vehicle. The purchase price of $35,890. 00 plus tax and license was a huge investment for me (I paid cash and drained my savings so I would not have monthly payment). So these additional costs to an almost new vehicle have drained my account again.

55 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2011

While at idle my engine started to tick,so I took it to the mechanic and he told me I had a bad lash adjuster, and it was very common for this to happen with the 5,4l 3valve engine,so I went online to see if I could find any info about my issue and it seams that thousand of people are having the same issue, and how Ford will not recall the motors for repair of a major defect to that type of engine, the mechanic told me to drive it until it dies, because the cost will be the same to repair or replace the engine, powertrain. Com sells the upgraded engine which corrects the three major issues with this engine, which are, lash adjusters, cam phasers, and the spark plug treads stripping out of the heads, why has Ford been able to hide this for so long.

56 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2011

The contact owns a 2005 Ford f150. The contact stated that the motor was faulty due to the design, causing a carbon build up that blocks the spark plugs. The vehicle was towed to the dealer; however, the dealer was unable to remove the spark plugs. The manufacturer referred the contact to NHTSA to file a complaint. No repairs were performed. The current and failure mileage was 131,000.

57 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2011

My 2005 Ford f150 quit while driving down the highway with my 12 yr old son. Engine began to spit and sputter and stranded us on the highway. After towing to my local Ford dealer. The dealer discovered the timing chain had slipped causing the truck to jump time and ruining the engine. The truck has 130,000 highway miles. Now they want $7,500 for a new engine. The other issue is my rear driver side window just fell into the door. They want between 200 and 300 dollars to repair.

58 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2010

Spark plugs breaking off in engine head because of poor design. Just happened to me and after looking around the internet it has happened to a lot of people and now the service department of my local Ford dealership says it common and now they are charging me becuase they broke it and its common.

59 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/26/2010

While driving, my 2005 F-150 would suddenly act as if the transmission was in neutral. The wrench symbol on the gauge panel would illuminate, but the engine was still running. The only way to clear the problem was to pull over, put car in park, shut engine off, restart engine and shift to drive. Luckily this never happened on the highway, but it could have led to a serious accident. I had the truck repaired, and the dealership had to replace the throttle body. This is not covered under warranty according to the dealership. Truck has only 58,800 miles on it. I have seen this issue on this site and others and NHTSA really should investigate this issue.

60 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/29/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Ford f150 truck. While driving 35-40 mph the vehicle the vehicle was skipping and jumping and it was later towed to a local mechanic who had to remove the engine head in order to reach the spark plugs. The mechanic could not get all of the spark plugs out of the vehicle and referred him back to the dealer. The local mechanic repaired the vehicle for $900 since the dealer wanted to charge $2800 to repair the vehicle. The contact stated that because of the design of the vehicle the spark plugs were difficult to reach. The failure mileage was 75,000 and the current mileage was 80,000.

61 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/07/2010

Truck shakes vigorously at speeds over 55mph, cannot excel in fast oncoming traffic with children in vehicle! engine cuts out and jerks the whole vehicle. Misfiring. Continuously having to get towing because the vehicle fails to start all together! this could lead to injury, death, accidents not only for the driver/passengers but others on the roads as well. This issue has been brought to attention in the Ford F-150 5. 4l engine more than several hundred times and no action has been taken. You can find information all over of people having the same issues, the Ford dealership I took it to told me I would need a new engine or to spend thousands to fix it and they see people back in there within the month of spending grands to fix it. Something needs done about this before people end up dying in these vehicles.

62 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/28/2010

Notified today that there is an issue with removing and replacing spark plugs for the Ford 5. 3 triton v8 3 valve engine. Ford has issued a technical service bulletin TSB 08-7-6 and it is not available on your website. Why? if this is indeed a manufacturers defect should it not be covered by their original warranty or the magnusen-moss warranty act and or the ucc, article 2. This procedure can be both timely and costly for a consumer. I have received quotes ranging from 250 to 1600 dollars. Should the consumer be expected to shoulder the burden of this issue?.

63 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

Approximately 2 years ago I purchased a 2005 Ford F-150 extended cab truck. I have had no problems with the truck up until this point and my truck currently has approximately 67,000 miles on it. However, approximately three (3) weeks ago I noticed my truck "sputtering" and "missing" and having some difficulty starting. I took it to the dealership (kamaaina motor's) that I purchased it from. The mechanics are now telling me that the spark plugs broke off and fell into the engine "head". They have attempted to retrieve the pieces of the spark plugs (two as they are currently reporting) but they feel that the impact of the spark plugs falling into the head may have now caused my motor to freeze up. At this point they are recommending complete engine replacement for my truck which will cost thousands of dollars. I am devastated. This is my only vehicle and I still owe money to the bank to pay it off. I don't have thousands of dollars to replace the motor and I know can't just get another loan for another car. I have been reading online about this repeated failure on Ford's fault of defective spark plugs and that this is common and of no fault of the owners of the vehicles. At this point my truck is still sitting at the mechanics and is not moving and I am without a car. Is there not anything that the Ford company can do to be responsible for their defective productions?? I devastated by this and have no idea what I am going to do to get back into a running vehicle so I can get to work and take my kids to and from school. Please help?????.

64 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2010

While driving to work #5 sparkplug blew out of the block. With the engine still running fumes or gas vapors from the sparkplug hole and the spark from the coil pack can cause the engine to catch fire or even explode!!!! causing bodily injury or death to the occupant of the vehicle.

65 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2010

While at ~45mph, I eased off the accelerator to go into a left hand turn. My f150 then lost all power and shut off (no power steering, etc), and there were 2 tracker trailers coming in the opposite direction from me. I was barely able to complete the turn with the momentum that I had before the truck died. The truck re-started without any issue. This had happened before 2 other times with large gaps of time in between (once in November 09 and the other time a week before this latest incident). The other 2 occurrences were similar (highway speeds of 60mph), and restarting without any issue or error codes. An error code was generated (finally) with the incident described at the top of this complaint, and I brought the truck to the dealership. They diagnosed a faulty throttle sensor which was replaced. At less than 50,000 miles I did not expect to see an issue with this sensor, and certainly I would expect the truck to default into the "limp home mode" described in the manual, which it did not. There were several other similar complaints for this on some forums and I felt it might need some attention.

66 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/28/2009

Spark plug breaking off in engine.

67 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2009

While traveling through a tunnel at approx. 55 mph the engine on my 2005 F-150 with a 5. 4 liter engine quit running at full speed and went into what Ford calls limp mode. Luckily there was no other vehicle behind me or I would not be here to write this. The truck has since this incident quit running all together several different times. I took the vehicle back to where it was purchased and was charged $75 to diagnose the problem. They said that the throttle body was not functioning properly and it would cost $450 to replace. Ford knows of this problem and will do nothing to repair the defective parts on their own. The dealer that is doing the repairs said that there are 397 of these parts on back order, that should tell them something! this could be a life threatening defect that the Ford motor CO. Will not take responsibility for.

68 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2009

There were no warnings or events leading up to the incident. No warning lights, no noises. We had been driving earlier, but only about 5 miles and then we ate dinner, so the car rested. We came home and my son was about to take his young daughter home. My son was in drivers seat, I was putting granddaughter in back seat child safety seat . Then I leaned into the passenger side front cab to grab a coke from the cupholder. My son turned on the truck, Ford f150 pickup, and we heard a boom. It was so loud the neighbors all came out. -it sounded like a bomb! I was lacerated on the hand. My son was in pain, my granddaughter was screaming, and I went to rear cab from outside, unstrapped her and carried her out onto the sidewalk far away, fearing fire or explosion. My son was lacerated on his chest, stomach and was deaf in left ear for more than 2 hrs. The inside lights went on, and the car was running until we were brave enough to take out the keys about 10 mins. We had to wash dust off of ourselves, the smoke filled the cab. We called police and made report and called ins. Carrier and made report. Today we had it towed to Ford dealer. I know this is a Ford f150 defect. If my son had been driving, he would have had a terrible accident with my 4 yr old granddaughter in the truck. I am going to force Ford to fix this and we are all hearing humming in our ears. The adjuster came out, gave us an estimate, we had the truck towed to Ford dealer. I called Ford customer service,, they took the complaint, and said wait 15 days for response. They asked me "what do you expect to be the outcome of this call?" ah what? I said that I expect them to pay the 1000. 00 deduct and the cost. The rep told me to have a happy thanksgiving! its not her place to tell me that I should be grateful. I told her we were. I want Ford to pay for this, the adjuster said they should. I bet they wont!.

70 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2009

I have a 2005 Ford F-150 (4. 6l v8) and I recently had a spark plug blow out of the engine, for the second time. The first time it cost me $556. 50 to repair it. This time it happened in a different cylinder. This time I had my 2year old daughter with me and was stranded along interstate 70 for over an hour. I didn't report it the first time, because I thought it was an isolated incident. Now after some research, I have found that this happening around the nation. I am not sure why there hasn't been a recall. Not only can this be a fire hazard, but in my case, my daughter and I were stranded along side a very busy highway.
