3 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2018

Electronic steering assist malfunction/ advanced trac malfunction. Steering is failing, hard to turn. Making noises. Ford did recall these trucks for those reasons but did not include my batch number. My vehicle is exhibiting the same issues as the recall. Mine should have been recalled.

4 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2017

I have a 2011 f150 with 65k miles. I noticed extra play in the steering at just under 60k miles. I had power steering module recalibrated. I thought this fixed the problem. Approx 3mos later I am having the same issue. Loss of control at high speeds and corners. I had alignment done today which did not fix the problem. Dealership said I needed a $1600 steering gear replaced. They couldnt tell me why this would fail with low miles unless it was a faulty part. After researching consumer complaints online it looks like there are many complaints about accidents on low mile f150s of this year due to steering failure. When I asked if the vehicle was safe to drive if I could not get this part right away, ($1600) they said that it is not unheard of for the steering to fail. They could not tell me why a recall for safety has not been done.

5 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2017

I was backing my F-150 down an alley out into the street when I had a sudden and complete steering failure. The steering wheel did not just feel stiff but locked up as if it were being held by something. There was no indication from either symptoms or any type of warning light as to the fail prior to this. After torquing on it. It finally broke to the right and then was able to move the wheels but it wanted to lock in certain positions. I am a big guy and could hardly move the wheel when it was trying to lock up. My wife would not have been able to move it at all. I have read the information since on this system and have found that the problem is consistent to the type of devise used to drive the power assist. When the electromagnet fails it locks into position rather than assisting the steering. This is very dangerous as it takes an incredible amount of power to move to steering wheel if this happens. This should not be an issue on a 5 year old truck that has just 50k this month.

6 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2017

2011 f150 steering failure , when failed steering failed stability control and steering went. While making turn steering would " lock" preventing tempary control of pickup, before completing trip power assist went totally out. Contacted Ford they state that the power assist needs to be replaced from description alone, they also had recalled multiple other vehicles for this issue how ever the f 150 is not one of those and it will cost 3 k to fix. . . . Umm if all your other vehicles are doing this and this one is doing the same thing then its a defect! the only thing that helped me prevent the accident from happening was my training as an evo ( emergency vehicle operator) at the time of failure I was turning in front of semi , if I would not have taken the ditch and prevented measures this would have been a quad fatality . Truck is parked at a dress given unable to drive home.

7 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2017

Electronic steering system failure when turning left. The issue began when I purchased the vehicle but was very intermittant. Over time it has gotten worse. Ford recalled other vehicles for same issue due to safety but not mine. I see on line many forums disucssing my exact issue on the same model year. I went to Ford corporate with no traction as they seemed like they didnt know the issue. I took my truck to the Ford dealer & they agree that its failing & want to charge me full price for correction which is 2k to replace electronic steering rack. I said I couldn't afford, they inspected my vehicle & passed it knowing that the steering was unsafe. I cannot afford 2k, I paid 45k for the truck. I have purchase many Fords. I am hoping that this becomes a recall soon.

8 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2016

While in motion went to turn left the steering locked up made a squalling sound, traction light displayed and also, power steering assist displayed and, service advance track displayed and turn signals were not staying on,(had to hold them manually. Took truck to dealership and told the problem was an epas failure. Laymen terminology is the steering gear has failed. Mileage on vehicle is 39,882, and will cost approximately $1450. 00 to fix this problem. I do have a repair invoice but have no way to scan. Be happy to mail a copy and any thing else needed.

9 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2015

Second incident with my 2011 Ford F-150. Epas steering gear failed 9 months after purchasing new. Failed again last week. Second replacement of this gear. This is a safety hazard. The first time this gear failed, I was unable to steer, fortunately I was turning at a stop light at slow speed. This most recent time I could still steer but wasn't sure for how long. This is a well known issue with this model truck and should be recalled and properly fixed before someone looses steering at highway speeds.

10 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2015

Steering started freezing at speeds around 20-25 mph. Not a huge deal at first because of city driving. . It eventually got worse at higher speeds. . August 7th 2015 , the steering failed at 65mph and sent the truck towards the concrete median. It could have been tragic. I ended up taking it to the shop that Monday and having the electronic power steering unit replaced at 1200. 00 plus. I am really upset that there is no recall on this with the danger it can cause!.

11 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2015

Tl- the contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving various speeds the steering failed. No warning lights illuminated. The contact pulled over and restarted the vehicle. This failure happen intermittently. The dealer was not made aware. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware. The failure mileage was 135, 000. Nd.

12 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2014

When maneuvering in the parking lot, the epas unit failed creating the steering wheel to be extremely hard to move. This issue was so bad I could no longer drive the truck back due to safety concerns. I am having the truck towed to the Ford dealer to see what they can do about this issue. The service advancedtrac information display appeared on my dash as well as electronic powersteering assist system failure. When turning as far right as possible the truck would make a really loud metal to metal noise. This truck is no longer able to drive safely, hopefully Ford will take action to fix this issue before its too late. Otherwise, I am still going to have to pay out of pocket around $1200-1500 to have this fixed.

13 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2013

While driving with a 5,500 pound camp trailer in tow the vehicle developed significant vibration and feed back from the road. The problem came about after approximately 20k miles on the truck. I would notice it primarily over joints in the road and any road imperfections also notice it and hear a clunking when off road on dirt roads. The clunking is intermittant but is there. It feels as if there is a loose component in the steering assembly which then can be felt in the steering wheel. I can notice both with trailer and without more when temperatures are higher such as 80 degrees or more. Not so much when cold but I am still able to get road feedback in the steering wheel at lower temps just not as bad. You can especially notice the vibration/feedback in colder temps if holding the steering wheel at its lowest point (bottom of wheel) while driving. I took the vehicle to the dealer several times and they allege they could not duplicate the problem. I have taken the vehicle back now 4 separate times and on the last time I showed the service adviser how I can grasp the steering shaft in the engine compartment and manually by hand turn the shaft back and forth as if in a steering motion and you can hear a loud clicking noise coming from somewhere either in the rack unit itself or the steering shafts. I am not sure where the noise is actually coming from but clearly in the steering assembly somewhere. I have great concern over safety and have now read many similar complaints including complete steering failure. Sounds like Ford does not exactly know how to go about repairs and so reluctant to replace any parts in case that does not fix issue. I understand that theory but wish they would at least try something for safety. If there is not a safety issue it is still an eerie feeling driving a truck at highway speed with looseness and vibration in the steering assembly.

14 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2012

Service advance trac light comes on when reversing with wheel fully turned, slight grinding noise heard. Called dealership and told not a concern -- the new systems "do that". Mentioned at next service appointment and told nothing is wrong. Noise gets intermittently worse, but dealership is "unable to replicate problem" before the warranty expires in March 2014. In July 2014 (26,000 miles), the sat light comes on whenever the wheel is fully turned in forward, reverse, and park, and a loud grinding metal on metal sound occurs. The dealership could hear it this time and diagnosed steering gear assembly failure. The service representative stated on July 18, 2014 that the service advance trac light indicates this problem and that the vehicle is not safe to drive. This should be a recall before injuries or deaths occur due to steering failure.

15 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2011

2012 Ford F-150 pickup trucks do not have a grab handle on the drivers side a pliiar. Ford F-150 trucks are higher than passenger cars and require a driver to pull or hold onto an object to enter the drivers side of the vehicle. Ford recommends drivers pull on the steering wheel as an assist when entering the F-150. It appears that repetitive and strenuous pulling on the steering wheel, particularly by larger drivers over 6 feet tall and weighing over 200 pounds, when entering the F-150, can cause steering components to break which could lead to steering failure, or problems while the vehicle is in motion. Suggested solution: Ford has a grab handle on the passenger side a pillar to assist passengers when entering the truck. Evidently, Ford engineers see a need to place a grab handle for occupants to use when entering F-150 trucks. To avoid possible steering mechanism damage, Ford should place a grab handle on the drivers side a pillar which would remove the potential damage to the steering mechanism.
