Hard to steer, rack and pinion type steering gears, electric failed, common type of issue with the 2011 and up Ford with steering issues all of a sudden making it extremely hard to turn ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly #vpic#.
While driving about 40 m per hour the steering wheel lock, couldn't turn left or right very dangerous and risky , almost hit a barrier, 3 years ago had to replace rack and pinion, replaced with original , now Dec 2020 the mechanic told me is the rack and pinion again, I see too many complaints about this very serious and dangerous fault.
Hello, my 2011 Ford f150 XLT truck with approximately 53,500 miles was diagnosed with rack and pinion electric steering failure and had to be replaced. It started with "service advancetrac" error and advanced to "power steering assist fault". It became increasingly hard and dangerous to drive and had to be taken to tire kingdom to be repaired for around $2000. 00. The vehicle was in motion when the issues happened and became dangerous when driving on city or highway. I am concerned that a vehicle with a little over 53,000 miles has a dangerous failure like this. I read that 2011 was the first year that Ford introduced the electric steering and am surprised that there has not been a recall for this issue. Is there any compensation for this? thank you, michael emerson.
Tl-the contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. Contact stated that while driving at 30 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning. The contact would have to shake the steering wheel in order for the steering to wheel to work properly. The vehicle was taken to the dealer bredemann Ford 2038 waukegan rd, glenview, IL 60025 (847) 348-8097 where it was diagnosed and determined that the rack pinion was faulty and needed to be replaced. At this time the vehicle is began repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed no recall was under the VIN. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000. Ck.
As I was leaving the parking lot and pulling into traffic the steering on my truck locked up and became extremely hard to move. Almost simultaneously the truck put a code up that said service power steering. After almost having a head on collision I pulled off to the side of the road shaking in terror as I was trying to figure out what could've possibly went wrong. With a little research I did and found out that there are other people that have had the same issue and the power steering rack and pinion module went out without warning. This is an immediate danger to any person that uses public roadways for themselves in other people they need to get this off the road immediately and recall this part.
While turning in traffic my epas steering went out almost causing a wreck. I already had dealership change epas rack and pinion and I have same problem. There is a recall for 2014 trucks with same issue. Its definitely a safety issue.
While driving I noticed my tires wearing on the outsides after getting an alignment done it still continues. After taking it to a shop and them not being able to find the problem, the noted that the rack and pinion bolt was worn out and they can't replace it without replacing the whole steering assembly.
Steering locked up while driving 40 plus miles an hour on a winding road almost crashed. Had trouble getting it off the tow truck. Towed it home and messed with the fuse box still locked. Got into the truck and manually reset the steering. Started truck and was able to drive. At first thought it was the rack and pinion, but I I would not have just reset and drove as nothing was wrong. I think that it has to do with the electric motor on the actual rack. Very dangerous and very expensive part. This could have been a lawsuit for Ford if my husband would have driven off a cliff as we live in a very mountainous area. This seems to be a component issue and not a rack issue. The motor is not serviceable so I would be very interested to see the inside of the motor but it has been spot welded. This needs to be resolved and not only with the escapes, and other Ford vehicles with the similar parts for steering. Looking at the forums this is a very common thing with this truck that is being overlooked. And I believe it has to do with the cost of the repair. Ford would lose a lot of money. 1600 for the motor alone.
Suddenly steering wheel lock, advance track sensor lit , extremely hard to turn , very serious safety issue no recall available, but too many issues apparently waiting for a fatality to happen before a recall vehicle stationary/in city/ happened 2 times already I'm afraid this happen while in motion. Diagnosed rack and pinion epas.
Rack and pinion is shot. The steering would stick while you were driving it over the last 2 yrs. Went to move the truck into our shop and the steering locked up on it.
When driving on the highway, there is intermittent resistance when trying to turn the wheel also, the advance track light comes on and that limits the turn signal availability. I have been told by my mechanic that I have to replace the entire rack and pinion steering to fix this, at $1800. There is only 84,000 miles on the truck. Looking online, Ford has recalled thousands of other models during this time, but not the F-150 - why not?? Ford needs to issue a recall on this before someone gets killed.
When driving on the highway, if I make a slight turn to the left, there is resistance when trying to return the wheel to straight ahead. Also, the advance track mechanism (skid control) has been disabled which also limits the turn signal availability. I have been told by my Ford dealer that I have to replace the entire rack and pinion steering mechanism to fix this. This is definitely a safety hazard and hard to understand given that I have less than 80,000 miles on the truck. Ford needs to issue a recall on this before someone gets killed.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at various low speeds, the steering wheel seized without warning. The contact used excessive force to regain control of the steering wheel. Norm reeves Ford of ceritos, CA was made aware of the failure and it was determined that the rack and pinion failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000. The VIN was not available.
Service traction control light coming on hard steering have taken to dealership twice for same problem first time they cleard the codes set last time I was told that the angle sensor in the power steerin is bad and that the rack and pinion need replace (epas gear).
Steering locks up while turning left or right while in motion on any road surface. Same problem we had with our other truck that is a one serial number off. With that truck the dealer needed to replace the rack and pinion assembly while under warranty. The truck had 15000 mile. This truck having problem now has 19,500 miles on it. The truck with the problem now is constantly having the steering locking up and is out of warranty now.
Steering lock up while driving. While making a sharp left turn in a parking lot the steering wheel locked up momentarily then became hard to turn. At the same time I heard a loud grinding or buzzing sound and the 'service advance trak' light came on. I had to have the car towed 150 miles to my mechanic. My mechanic conferred with the local Ford dealer and determined that the rack and pinion had to be replace. Truck has 57,000 miles on it. My mechanic expected the part to take up to a week to arrive but it was delivered the same day. Dealer had several units in stock. Seems strange to have that many of this p[art in stock unless there is a design or manufacturing flaw that Ford has not declared. I checked the f150 online forums and there are many references to this problem. Not sure what it takes to make a recall happen but given the seemingly high number of owners affected by this Ford should do something to help. This cost $1745 to fix (including tow) and created a very dangerous situation.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. After leaving an independent mechanic for an oil change, the advance track service warning indicator illuminated. The power steering and turn signals also failed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v316000 (steering). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 135,000.
Steering locked up while pulling out of the driveway . Rack and pinion is bad . At same time it takes my turn singles out.
I have seen many posts about the same issue with fellow 2011 Ford F-150 owners. My truck also locked up on me driving on a city street during lunch hour and when I took it to the dealer (under warranty) they advised after diagnostics that the electronic rack and pinion needed to be changed. After hearing a ridiculous price of $1800. 00 (part and labor) I asked why was it not covered under drivetrain warranty in which they advised it was "electrical. " Ford needs to assist all Ford F-150 owners on this matter if they don't want a huge lawsuit if, god forbid, anyone gets into an accident.
Noticed a sticking spot in long sweeping turns at 35+ mph that was manageable. Turned into concernig clicking sounds while turning wheel in any direction. Scared to drive ended up at dealership and diagnosed as another issue with epas and binding. Replaced rack and pinion assembly. Expecting to see more of this as these systems are now being tested. Hopefully Ford owns up to design/reliability flaws on this safety issue.
Tl-the contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The "service power steering now" message warning illuminated, as a result the power steering seized. The vehicle was taken to a independent mechanic where it diagnosed that the electric power steering module needed to be replaced as well as the rack and pinion. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 47,308. Mc.
Loud sound and popping when turning wheels sharp. Has been happening for a while and has gotten worse. Service advance trac message displays and then turn signals no longer work. Eventually warning would disappear but would come back on when turning sharp again. Took in for service and problem became so bad that vehicle would not turn. Having to replace rack and pinion.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the service advance track warning light illuminated intermittently as the turn signals failed to operate. The failure recurred several times. The dealer diagnosed that the rack and pinion and steering box needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired since the parts needed to do the repairs were not available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 24,500.
I had my truck scheduled to have a leveling kit and new tires put on. Immediately after the simple install my truck gave an alert on the information screen saying "electric power assist steering fault. Took the truck down the road to nearest Ford dealer and after they ran diagnostic it showed it needed a complete new rack and pinion. $1278. 00 worth without alignment. The mechanics shop who installed the kit is going to pay for it because it was fine before I took it to get kit + tires, however, I have read numerous stories online similar to mine that show the epas going out or that there having problems with it. Ford has had several updates to the epas models I'm aware, hopefully the new one going in will work and I won't ride away only to have a clunking noise to deal with in my front end like so many others I know.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while making a turn at approximately 10 mph, the power steering suddenly failed. The vehicle was shut down and restarted but to no avail. The vehicle was able to be driven to the contact's residence by applying excessive force to the steering wheel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the electric power steering motor and the rack & pinion system needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was 50,000.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph, the power steering system malfunctioned and the vehicle became difficult to steer. The contact took the vehicle to a dealer, who stated that the entire rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The contact did not have the rack and pinion replaced. The failure mileage was 47,000.
When I started up my F-150 super crew cab with the ecoboost engine the service advanced track warning message came on. As I was driving with this error message on the dash I found that my turn signals would not stay on unless I hold the turn signal lever. Later that day I went to take the truck into the dealer to show them the issue and the error message was gone and the turn signals were now functioning fine. Since the error was no longer on the Ford dealer could not do anything about the issue. The error stayed off for about 6 weeks and then came on again. Now it has been coming on about every 3 or 4 days so I took it to the dealer and they determined that the issue is with the rack and pinion steering assembly and have replaced that. I just go the truck back and have not had time to confirm that the issue is fixed however my confidence level is not there as this is just one of many issues that I have seen on this truck that appear to be "computer" related since shutting off the truck (or as I put it rebooting) will correct the issue.
Newer Ford f150's are equipped with an electronic power assist rack and pinion steering which has problems with popping over bumps or rough terrain. The problem seems to occurring to a lot of owners with the epas steering( f150 forum members over 600 posts on the topic and 57,000 views. Mine is affected as well. I have had my truck into two different Ford dealerships with no resolve. The problem has been isolated to the epas steering rack. The steering feels very loose and sloppy. Traveling over small bumps or rough terrain results in popping, knocking in the steering linkage. When off road, the knocking is more pronounced and the steering feels like you could lose control. Despite numerous calls to Ford by f150 owners, no recalls or TSB's have been issued to address this problem.
