The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving 75 mph on the highway, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted from 5th gear to 1st gear, and the rear wheels locked, and the vehicle slid. The vehicle then went into limp mode but was still drivable. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 123,000.
I've had the transmission replaced under Fordprotect warranty and subsequently another torque converter and subsequent to that, a new program installed to repair low rpm shudder. Under mild acceleration at interstate speeds (65 to 75 mph) it now hunts for gears with random upshifts and downshifts while failing to maintain or increase speed which constitutes a safety hazard.
Sudden downshift at highway speeds.
While driving vehicle shifts from 6 gear to first gear on 6r80 transmission amd hard shifts. . Wheels lock upbwhen vehicle downshifts abruptly. . . . . Spoke with Ford mechanic and this is a known issue with lead shield and or speed sensor. . This item need a recalled and repaired. . . No codes are thrown but it is a well know issue. . . Recalls are on 10r80 transmissions lead shield but not 6 speed. Please help.
Automatic 6 speed transmission has down shifted to 1st gear 3 times this week while traveling 30 to 40mph locking the rear wheels and red lining the motor in traffic.
I slowed down to make a turn, when I accelerated after completing the turn the transmission shifted from 1st gear to 5th gear, skipping 2nd, 3rd, & 4th gear. This caused the truck to stall. I shifted the transmission to neutral and back to drive to try to get it moving again. It moved a little and stalled again. I shifted to park and back to drive, the truck moved a little and stalled again. I shifted the transmission to park and shut off the ignition. I restarted the engine and shifted to drive and the truck started moving, shifting perfectly as if nothing is wrong.
6r80 lead frame failure causing erratic shifting and hard slamming and getting stuck in one gear on the interstate.
While driving my 2017 Ford F-150 equipped with the 10-speed automatic transmission, the vehicle began experiencing progressive slipping and delayed shifting between multiple gears, including failure to upshift beyond higher gears during normal driving. The transmission would flare between shifts and hesitate before engaging. During one drive, the vehicle would not shift properly and displayed a wrench warning message instructing the driver to see the owner’s manual. The transmission appeared to enter a reduced performance or limp mode. The issue has worsened over time despite a recent transmission fluid service and computer relearn/flash performed by a service center at a cost of approximately $1,100. No overheating occurred, but slipping continued and spread to additional gears. Prior to purchasing the vehicle, abnormal shifting and clunking were noticed during the test drive and brought to the dealer’s attention. The behavior was described as normal operation for the 10-speed transmission. The transmission has since deteriorated into failure requiring replacement. This malfunction creates a safety risk due to unpredictable acceleration, delayed power delivery when merging or crossing traffic, and loss of normal shifting operation. Independent repair facilities have diagnosed the transmission as internally failing and recommended full replacement with estimated repair costs of approximately $8,000. Symptoms began gradually and progressed to active fault behavior with warning message activation.
The transmission control module in the 10r60 transmission is no longer communicating with the vehicle. This caused the vehicle to not be able to determine which gear it is in causing it to not start.
Out of no where I was stopped at a traffic light and just before the light turned green, a yellow wrench appeared on my dash for a moment and stated only "see manual". I cleared the dash screen and pressed ok, the traffic light turned green and when I applied my foot to the gas peddle the rpm's went up but the car did not move. I pressed just a little harder to give a bit more gas and the rpm's continued to increase until the car's transmission threw itself into second gear quite forcefully and the car moved. I had it inspected by my mechanic and when he scanned the car's trouble codes he discovered the following: p0722-00, u0155-00, u0401-82, u0452-82, b1081-07 all those codes are tied to the transmission's lead frame failure which is a well known issue. Ford has extended additional warranty coverage up to 2016 models with the same 6r80 transmissions but will not cover my 2017 which was manufactured in 2016 with the exact same transmission having the exact same problems.
While driving down the road all of a sudden vehicle slams then shifts down indicator lights for gear selection starts flashing. It has happened 4 times so far this week February 17, February 19 of 2026.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while the vehicle was stopped at a stop light, the accelerator pedal was depressed, and the driver’s and passenger’s side rear wheels locked up. The contact stated that after several seconds, the vehicle started operating as intended. Neither an independent mechanic nor a dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 78,684.
Reporting an ongoing off intermittent malfunction of the 6speed transmission electrical/sensor components causing unexpected downshifting and upshifting without any driver input or warning. This occurs semi regularly and is very concerning for the safety of the driver, passengers, and those on the road. I’ve been made aware of this ongoing investigation regarding the transmission issue, and am filing a report as a result. No road accident has resulted yet from said issue, but there is growing concern for the safety conditions in said vehicle as it continues to be used.
Wheels lock up and down shift at high rate of speed. Code on dash is a po720.
Torque shudder , involuntary downshifts , gets stuck in 2nd ,.
While driving my truck roughly 60 mph, I experienced a sudden and uncommandded shift from 6th to 1st gear for roughly 3-5 seconds. When this occurred the engine rpms jumped up to near red line and I experienced a rapid deceleration. I was driving on a dry road with new tires and did not experience any wheel lock up or skidding. However, this could have very easily posed an extreme safety hazard to both me and other drivers around me had I lost control of the vehicle which would have been highly likely in less optimal conditions. The problem has not been reproduced by a dealer or independent service center and the components have not been inspected. While the downshift was occurring there were some lights that flashed on the dashboard. I believe it may have been a check engine light, but my focus was on maintaining control of the vehicle so I did not have time to focus on the lights. Once the engine shifted back to normal there were no remaining lights or cautions. The symptoms of this incident very closely match those discussed in the ongoing investigation ea26001.
10 speed transmission hard shifting, sudden power surges, during shifting it’s getting stuck in gear. Sudden shifting while driving. It’s come to my attention this is a known issue for my 2017 Ford f150 ecoboost 3. 5l v6, 10 speed automatic transmission. I need help with repairs. Was told to report this on this site.
Coming down an incline in a parking garage and had a hard down shift while lightly applying the brakes issue is following pre warning signs for safety issues under investigation.
During the last two years with my 2017 Ford f150 XLT 4x4 5. 4l, I've replaced the brake pads 8 times. I've also replaced the rotors on all 4 wheels. Each time, with less than 30,000 miles between needing to replace the pads, the front pads have worn down the entire pad at an unreasonable rate. I do not brake hard, and I drive mostly on highways without much traffic, so having to replace the pads every other month is excessive. With new rotors, still the pads continue wearing down to plate quickly. I've also had to replace the calipers on each wheel more than once because the caliper pins seize and will break when trying to adjust the caliper. The brakes and all the components are a major safety hazard as I'm always worrying if the brakes will function properly any give time I need to slow down. Also, the transmission shifts roughly and even downshifts without cause on occasion. It startles me when I'm driving and suddenly the transmission decides it wants to shift with a violent jolt as though briskly stepping on the brakes. I've had the transmission fluid changed twice in the last 2 years, which did not have any effect on the issue. Prior to each flush, the transmission has also developed a significant leak, which I led to the decision to flush the fluid and replace the pan and gasket. However, after doing so, the transmission continues downshifting and leaking. Once again, these issues have a significant impact on how safe I feel while driving my truck. I love my truck, but I hope my complaint helps Ford fix these little big issues and can develop a fix for future models.
I live in canada. While driving, my 2017 Ford F-150 with the 6r80 automatic transmission suddenly shut off without warning. The vehicle lost power while in motion, creating a dangerous situation. The incident was accompanied by multiple powertrain fault codes (5 p-codes). This appears to be related to sudden transmission faults and loss of gear position. No prior warning lights before shutdown.
I seen there were some issues going around with the 6r80 and wanted to voice my concerns as I am having this issue as well. Intermittently ive been having issues where ill be driving, could be doing 65 down the highway. The wrench light pops up for a second and my truck slams down into 2nd or 3rd gear and goes into limp mode. This could happen at any given time without warning. This just happened to me on Monday, went and got a code reading, and have a code for the output shaft speed sensor. Although I was fine, it is certainly not okay the truck just decided to slam down into gear ultimately slowing down the vehicle tremendously fast while being in traffic. Could have caused an accident or worse.
10 speed transmission. Hard downshifting, skipping gears and producing the check engine light when it goes into 10th gear. Yes it is available for inspection. Yes, the problem was reproduced, has not been inspected by the manufacturer. It is a $9,000 fix. There were no warning lamps, messages etc, prior to failure.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated while responding and felt like the transmission was shifting in and out of gear. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle downshifted unintendedly while driving, and the vehicle jumped and hesitated to respond while attempting to drive from a complete stop. The power train warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, while downshifting to a lower gear, the transmission shifted hard. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The dealer where the vehicle was purchased was made aware of the failure. In addition, the contact stated that the 4wd module was recently replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 127,650.
While driving my 2017 f150 lariat 4x4 5. 0lv8 with 6speed transmission and 48,700 miles on the odometer at roughly 55mph this morning - the transmission suddenly downshifted to 2nd gear. The downshift was sudden enough to "bark" the rear tires. Thankfully, no one was near me, and I was able to maintain control of the vehicle and reach my destination safely.
While driving at normal speeds in drive mode, the transmission suddenly downshifts to 1st or 2nd gear causing immediate deceleration.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle unexpectedly jerked while driving and attempting to shift gears. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the catalytic converter and timing components had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact later stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power, and there was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed back to the independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the transmission had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000.
My 2017 Ford f150 6r80 transmission lead frame malfunction causing for the transmission to severely down shift and locking my rear wheels. At the time no check engine or wrench symbol showed on my speedometer dashboard until the following day. I was lucky no vehicles were close to me that could of rear ended me and loose control on the freeway. Took my f150 to my local Ford dealership and confirmed that it was my transmission lead frame and fixed it.
Transmission switching gears (downshifting)at highway speeds to lower gears causing the rear wheels to slide on pavement. Transmission will occasionally get stuck in 3rd or 5th gear at red lights causing dangerous interactions in intersections where the truck will not get upto speed fast enough to keep up with flow of traffic.
While driving my truck erratically shifts. I’ve gotten multiple indications stating that elite frame sensor is bad. I have been traveling 70+ miles an hour down the interstate and my rear wheels lock up the transmission drops in the second gear. This is a major safety hazard as it could cause major accidents. While looking through other complaints, this is a major ongoing condition with the 6r 80 transmissions in 2017 Ford f1 50s that has been reported on numerous occasions.
Truck sometimes roughly downshifts. I always thought it was normal, but I see that others may be experiencing the same transmission issues. It has happened many times. I only have 77,000 miles.
My 2017 F-150 had only 87k miles on it. I don't tow boats or anything heavy. Two months ago my transmission started giving me problems banging when putting in gear and causing my rear end to lock up. Took to ronnie thompson Ford dealership in elijay GA and they had to replace my rear end. 3500. 00 less then 3 weeks later the transmission was not acting right causing shifting and vibration issues. Took to same dealership in elijay GA as I was outta twn again at my second home. They said my transmission was failing and I needed at min a new torque converter. As I could not afford the high price of the Ford dealership repair I came back home to south FL and had the transmission rebuilt for 5500. 00 at gold coast transmission in fort lauderdale, FL. Ive now spent over 9k dollars in the last two months to fix this problem. Im a recently retired ft lauderdale cop and I cant afford to buy a new vehicle so I've had to put all this money into this prob. Im a Ford guy, my last Ford f150 was a 2000. I put 267k miles on it and had it 18 yrs before I bought this truck. Prior to that I had a 94' Ford ranger. I put 197k miles on it and before that a 72 cutlass in hs. Im [xxx] old and have had only 4 cars my whole life. I take care of my vehicles. Of the 4 cars this 2017 is the only new car ive ever owned and have had more problems with it then any. I see you guys are looking at these transmission and I wanted my complaint documented. If there is a recall I feel Ford should have to reimburse me for the transmission and rear end I just had to replace. Thanks for looking out for the little guy. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The transmission for this vehicle is failing. When accelerating it shifts to a lower gear without warning. It appears to be slipping into gears that it should not be shifting into. When first putting the vehicle into drive it often lurches forward so a hard braking action is required when shifting from park to drive. Dealer is so overwhelmed by transmission issues they require months in advance to see vehicle. Once received they need a week to just evaluate then “up to two months” to repair it. They indicate it’s a known issue with the Ford 10 speeds. A warning notice is constant and cannot be reset. “see manual”.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving 70 mph and depressing the accelerator pedal, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted from sixth gear to third gear, causing the rear wheels to lock up temporarily for several minutes. The transmission fault warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was pulled over to the right side of the road and turned off for ten minutes. The vehicle was restarted and operated as intended. Neither an independent mechanic nor a dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact stated that the failure had occurred four times. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 190,598.
Frequently I will be driving at highway speeds and the truck will unexpectedly downshift. This will happen around every 500 miles. I have only had it drop from 6th to 5th/4th, never any lower at highway speeds. I have had this occur multiple times at slower speeds but it will go away. During each time the code p0720, output speed sensor, will appear and I will have to clear the code and it will work like normal again. There has only been one instance, in my 2 months of ownership, in which the unexpected downshift happened, I then came to a stop and then the truck stalled at a stop light. The truck is available for inspection. My safety and others were put at risk since I lost the ability to control my throttle making my acceleration and deceleration erratic. Also, when I was stalled at the green light it was on a road that had a speed limit of 70 which I could have been hit by another vehicle predicting me to drive away from the stop light when I could not. It hasn't been confirmed by a dealer or independent service center but matches the description of the NHTSA investigation into the issue. The vehicle component has not be inspected yet. Prior to the issue, no warning lights have popped up. It is only when the issue occurs and I feel the truck unexpectedly downshift and no longer upshift that a yellow wrench will show up with the code I had mentioned previously.
