Ford F-150 owners have reported 94 problems related to power steering failed (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford F-150 based on all problems reported for the F-150.
While driving my vehicle, the steering became so heavy that I was barely able to make the turn and was almost hit head on by a vehicle on a two lane highway where the speed limit is 55. After doing some research, this apparently is a common problem in this vehicle. I had it repaired and the bill was over $600. 00. There should be a recall initiated by Ford motor company before someone gets killed when their power steering fails. In a f150, it is very difficult to turn the wheel without power steering.

While driving 70 mph with my cruise control on a smooth, level hwy my cruise control cut off abruptly causing an alarm to sound and a notice to service adv trac came up on my screen. At that moment I also discovered my power steering had failed causing the truck to become very difficult to steer. The rapid deceleration caused the car behind me to have to brake hard and get on the shoulder. Luckily there was no accident. I drove the truck home and called my Ford dealer the next morning and consequently took the car to them. I was informed later that morning that I had had a catastrophic steering failure and that my complete electronic power steering assist (epsa) would have to be replaced to the tune of about $2,000. The truck was delivered new in Jan of 2016 only has 45,000 miles on it and I doubt has ever been off of paved roads . I had no choice but to have it repaired and pay the bill. I contacted Ford to see if I could get some help and basically got a very weak response and of course no action. This failure occurred with absolutely no warning whatsoever and had it happened in traffic or in a more hazardous situation with a physically weaker driver at the wheel there would have almost certainly been a bad accident. After doing some searching I find that this is not an unheard of incident and based on my research would bet Ford is aware of this problem. At this point I'm ashamed that I have put so much faith in Ford and their products in the past.
Lost steering momentarily while driving under dry, normal conditions on a mountainous hiway and crossed left of center when power assisted steering failed. Hill descent control fault and service advance trac errors appeared on my panel. Dealer was unable to find computer generated errors and could notr/did not repair. Has occured twice more with same results.

~tl the contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the power steering seized while driving approximately 40 mph. The dealer diagnosed that the power steering failed. The manufacturer stated that they would not repair the vehicle since there was no current recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 83,000.
The power steering assist totally cut out without warning in the middle of a turn out from a parking lot on to a 6-lane highway. I was not able to complete the turn. The truck shuddered very roughly as the power steering failed. Luckily there were no other cars on the road at the time. If there were, one would have hit me and it would have been bad. I turned the a/c off and my power steering came back. It has not happened again yet. But I am very concerned that it will happen again. I hope that this report, if supported by many more from other owners, may point to a larger problem, if one exists.
Tl the contact owns a 2008 Ford F-150. While driving 35 mph, the power steering failed. There were no warning indicators illuminated prior to the failure. The vehicle was able to be driven back to the contact's residence. The contact called mercedes-benz of caldwell (230 bloomfield Ave, fairfield, NJ 07004, (973) 227-3600) and was advised to call back on March 19, 2018 to inquire about having the vehicle towed back to the dealer for repair. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 30,000.

Electronic power assisted steering failure-epas is cutting out most of the time causing over steer and under steer conditions due to the amount of force needed to correct on left and right turns. Steering will get difficult to control on turns just like the non power steering vehicles of old. This occurs at startup and with vehicle in motion and ends with park and vehicle shut off. Can supply video footage if requested.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. While driving 20 mph, the power steering failed and the steering wheel seized while making a left turn. An unknown Ford dealer in montgomery, alabama was made aware of the failure and requested that the vehicle be brought in for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 97,000.

Complete power assist steering failure: while driving along a city street, I experienced complete loss of power steering, causing the driver (myself) to virtually lose all directional control. . I could only control the vehicle steering and bring it to a stop by using extreme physical strength to manually steer the vehicle. . If my wife had been driving at the time of occurrence she "would not have been able to manually steer the vehicle" and, would have almost certainly lost steering control. . . I had the vehicle towed to a Ford dealership, who diagnosed that the steering rack needed to be replaced. . . . Upon researching this fault, I have found clear evidence that this is a known problem with the 2013 Ford f150 and subsequent years. . . Ford issued a recall on the 2014 f150 for this fault, but not for 2013 vehicles. . . Loss of power assist steering while driving this size of vehicle is an extremely dangerous condition to find yourself in and, may have already been the cause of accidents!! my opinion is that Ford are very much aware of this steering fault, due to the fact that they issued a partial recall and, they want all old steering racks that are replaced, sent back to them! I requested the old steering rack that was being replaced, be returned to me. . . However, Ford indicated a $400 core charge would be billed to me to for keeping the old part! Ford needs to issue a broader recall regarding this fault on f150's before more people are injured or killed! this is a serious safety issue.
Steering column sensor failed leading to complete failure of the electronic power steering system. Power steering failure occurred while in motion while turning. A search of internet forums confirms this is a widespread issue with this vehicle make and model.
61,000 miles power steering failed in motion fault on steering angle sensor not sold had to replace whole steering rack $2000. 00 now in motion transmission fault code p7031 first gear sync will not shift from second to first without bucking. Dealer says transmission needs to be taken apart thousands of dollars and 1500 miles out of warranty.
Vehicle traveling approx 35mph on a city street around a curve when the epas system failed suddenly. Steering became extremely difficult and vehicle was nearly involved in a collision. Vehicle dashboard displayed "service advancetrak" and " electroinic power steering assist failure" simultaneously. Vehicle was towed to dealership. No official diagnosis from dealer.
While driving my vehicle on a city street (speed limit 45mph), and while in a turn, my power steering abruptly failed causing me to almost crash. I was able to recover and continue steering using my body weight to assist in steering which was very difficult. The power steering would then begin to work again, however it would continue to fail intermittently, suddenly, and without warning. I was able to get an appointment at my local Ford dealership where they informed me that my power steering unit itself was fine, however it had a faulty sensor that was causing the unit to intermittently fail. I was told that the sensor was unreachable and that they were unable to replace it, so I would have to purchase and have them install a brand new power steering unit. This cost me around $2000 to replace a power steering unit that was designed with an irreplaceable sensor.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. While driving approximately 35 mph, the power steering suddenly failed. The contact slammed on the brakes to avoid crashing into a nearby building. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the power steering failed to function and the eps warning indicator flashed. The vehicle was not diagnosed by a dealer, but it was inspected by an independent mechanic. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 73,000.
The electrical power steering assembly failed. Ford does have a recall on certain trucks for this problem but not this vehicle. Truck was in motion in greenfield mass. On interstate 91.
Driving on highway. Display showed pscm error code and power steering failed. Luckily I was able to maneuver the truck over to the side of the highway and get adjusted before taking it to dealership.
Electric power assist steering failure, while making a left hand turn the steering failed part way through the turn causing the truck to go straight, because of this I almost hit 2 parked cars. When this happened the steering wheel locked up and I could not turn it. This is a known issue to Ford as there have been thousands of recall for these units from 2011 and newer, my truck falls in to the recall void.
After starting from a stop sign, attempted to make a left turn. The power steering failed, a fail was annunciated on the instrument cluster, steering was extremely difficult, the engine remained running. Drove about 400 feet to a safe spot turned off the engine and parked the truck. When the tow truck arrived the driver started the engine and the power steering worked normally. Towed the truck to a garage to have it checked. 78, 700 miles on truck.
Electric power steering failure, sudden loss of power, when moving and turning.
Loss of power steering while moving at highway speeds. Power steering returns and fails off and on repeatedly. Vehicle was recalled for this specific problem, but did not include this particular vehicle. Steering also fails on city streets and comes off and on with no defined pattern. Must be man handled to be steered.
I have a 2012 Ford F-150 fx4 with less than 60,000 miles on it. The electronic power steering failed unexpectedly. Fortunately the vehicle was stationary when this occurred. Although I was not moving, I happened to be over thirty miles from home. My concern is that this issue could possibly present itself while the vehicle is in motion. I am in decent shape and was absolutely exhausted by the time I arrived at home. My thoughts went to my wife operating the truck in traffic, with my children in it, which in my eyes poses a very real safety hazard. I have contacted Ford customer care several times and received not help, or potential solutions.
Today while driving my 2013 Ford f150 at 30mph on a county road, a warning popped up that said "hill descent control fault" as the power steering failed. Luckily I was driving straight ahead at a slowed rate of speed. After this I could barely turn the steering wheel making for very unsafe driving conditions. Also the turn signals quit working shortly afterwards. The vehicle has about 50,000 miles on it, and looking around on the internet would lead me to assume this is a very common problem that is a definite safety concern for any in or around one of these vehicles. I also noticed that the next model year of this vehicle received a recall on this very problem. My wife also drives a 2013 f150 and I'm afraid to let her drive it anymore, it took all I could do to steer it, I can't imagine she'll be able to do the same when hers fails.
The electronic power steering fails intermittently. Most often it fails while in the process of turning left while in motion. When it fails, the steering goes to manual which makes it difficult to control the vehicle and complete the turn. It's very dangerous and could easily cause an accident or injuries.
Power steering failed twice while backing up there is a shutter when coming to a stop. Sometimes hard enough to feel like you were hit from behind.
Electronic power steering assist failure causes the steering to lock. Vehicle is impossible to control without extreme effort. Failure occurs in the middle of a turn. At only 44000 miles. This is a poorly engineered design, not a result of abuse or normal wear and tear.
Primarily while turning left power steering goes hard. Usually recovers after turning to right. Intermittent total power steering failure. As yet, unable to determine reproducible sequence of events to demonstrate issue to dealer.
On our 2013 f150 ecoboost, the power steering assist is an electric motor that is prone to failure. Ours failed at 27,000 miles. Losing power steering in a turn could be very dangerous as the vehicle is extremely difficult to control without it. Furthermore, the differential of effort would lead a person to believe their steering failed completely. There was no real warning that the power steering was about to fail aside from some cryptic warning messages on seemingly unrelated systems.
While driving my 2012 F-150eb, the power steering assist quit working in the middle of a turn in a parking garage. I had to put all 180 lbs of my weight into the steer in order to avoid a concrete stanchion, 2 pedestrians and another vehicle. Had my wife been driving, this could have resulted in a fatality. Ford corp. Claims they know of no problems with the steering on this vehicle. However, I have found numerous complaints on line citing the same problem/issues. Diagnosis was "power steering electric motor failure" and repair cost is $2,200. 00.
When I turn on and place the truck in drive, my steering wheel locks up to where I cant use steering wheel, I get a error on dash stating "assist power steering failure. I place truck in park and turn vehicle off, and restart and problem seems fine, until steering wheel locks up while driving and I get this same error. Ford dealer is charging me $2000 to fix this problem. This could cause a major crash. I believe Ford should have this recalled and pay for this.
