On 8/29/2020 I was driving my 2013 Ford F-150 and I was making a left turn in a intersection and right when I was turning my steering wheel it froze up and became extremely hard to turn. I had to slam on my brakes and pull the wheel to the left with all my might and almost went over the curb. Luckily I was down the street from my home so I managed to to slowly take drive truck back home. After going online and researching the steering problem I found out that there are thousands of people who have had the same issue with there 2013 Ford F-150s. Even other years of Ford F-150 have had the same problems also. The 2014 F-150 have a recall on there steering systems. Ford has not to this day issued a recall yet for the 2013 Ford F-150 but it has recalls for fusions and other 2013 Ford models. This is very disconcerting to me because of the safety issue. Luckily I wasn't going 75 on the freeway around a curve when this happened or this could have been a catastrophe. Shame on Ford for putting faulty steering systems in these vehicles and not issuing a recall still. I had to pay $2,000 to get the rack and pinion replaced and I am very disappointed that they make me pay for there faulty part. I do not feels safe driving this truck anymore and I will not buy another Ford product in the future.
My 2018 f150 began having steering assist failure at approx 50,000 miles. There have been two ocassions where while driving steering assist goes out and the steering wheel gets stiff almost causing me to collide with other vehicles. I contacted Ford about the issue and as they are aware the only solution was to replace the rack and pinion at my expense. At 63,000 miles my pick up has no power steering.

Electric power steering rack and pinion stopped working while driving at approximately 75 mph, had to pull over and get the truck towed. Contacted local Ford dealer, they advised replacing the electric rack and pinion for about $1900. They acknowledged it is a safety concern, however Ford has not issued a recall for this model yet.
Driving the f150 I noticed a popping noise when turning. Shortly after the popping noise when negotiating a turn the rack and pinion locked up. Truck went into on coming traffic. Now the power steering completely failed and a trouble code was displayed. Rack and pinion is bad and needs to be replaced not covered under warranty. Rack and pinion on national back order through Ford motor company. This was a extremely dangerous situation especially with how the electric motor assist steering took the wheel from my hand and jolted in one direction or the other at highway speeds.
Hello, my 2011 Ford f150 XLT truck with approximately 53,500 miles was diagnosed with rack and pinion electric steering failure and had to be replaced. It started with "service advancetrac" error and advanced to "power steering assist fault". It became increasingly hard and dangerous to drive and had to be taken to tire kingdom to be repaired for around $2000. 00. The vehicle was in motion when the issues happened and became dangerous when driving on city or highway. I am concerned that a vehicle with a little over 53,000 miles has a dangerous failure like this. I read that 2011 was the first year that Ford introduced the electric steering and am surprised that there has not been a recall for this issue. Is there any compensation for this? thank you, michael emerson.

Power steering is starting to fail. The symptoms are difficulty in turning, wheels not returning to center after a turn, complete power steering failure. The biggest problem is that the epas system is married to the rack and pinion assembly so the entire assembly has to be replaced instead of just the epas. About a $2000 repair. I understand parts break but but having to replace a major part of the steering package is very poor design.
Rack & pinion I've got a 2012 Ford F-150 that we have always taken to the dealer it's only got 63k miles on it. So when the steering system fail fault code popped up on the screen we were shocked. We never had any indication of a problem. It was Friday August 23 2019 evening we we're just going to grab some dinner my husband pulled the truck back out of the drive way and immediately noticed the power steering was not working that's when we noticed the screen. We researched and found out it was very possibly the rack and pinion because the power steering is electrical and it's in the rack and pinion. We took the truck to the dealer and prayed it wasn't what we thought. Unfortunately it was. So here we are $1846. 00 later. I'm just glad my husband was driving. If it had been me driving in traffic I dont know what would have happened. All the complaints we found all over the internet we had hoped it was a recall but no such luck. Hope this helps anyone else that has this problem. Good luck.

As I was leaving the parking lot and pulling into traffic the steering on my truck locked up and became extremely hard to move. Almost simultaneously the truck put a code up that said service power steering. After almost having a head on collision I pulled off to the side of the road shaking in terror as I was trying to figure out what could've possibly went wrong. With a little research I did and found out that there are other people that have had the same issue and the power steering rack and pinion module went out without warning. This is an immediate danger to any person that uses public roadways for themselves in other people they need to get this off the road immediately and recall this part.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. The contact stated that there was an abnormal noise heard when the vehicle was in operation concerning the steering. The vehicle was not diagnosed by a Ford dealer yet. An independent mechanic diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. In addition, the vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign number: 19v075000 (power train) but the remedy, per the recall notice had not been provided yet so the contact was waiting on instructions from the manufacturer and was uncertain as to when the recall repair appointment may be provided. The manufacturer was notified of the failure to determine the technical guidelines to repair the vehicle and to address the recall campaign. The manufacturer had not issued any eps recall campaigns for this year, make and model, had issued 3 TSB for steering, had issued NHTSA campaign number: 15v279000 (steering) for the 2015 model types however, the contact felt that the manufacturer had not provided a solution yet other than replacing the same oem rack and pinion part that may fail again. The approximate failure mileage was 69,542. Dyd.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. While driving 20 mph, the "downhill descent" and power steering warning indicators illuminated. Also, the power steering seized. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the rack and pinion failed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 38,000.
While turning in traffic my epas steering went out almost causing a wreck. I already had dealership change epas rack and pinion and I have same problem. There is a recall for 2014 trucks with same issue. Its definitely a safety issue.
Steering pulls to left and right steering wheel needs constant input to drive straight this will occur at city or highway speeds on any road conditions. Rack and pinion has been replaced at 2900 miles truck had 2 alignments tire pressure checked different tires were tried but did not resolve the problem. Called Ford Nov. 2018 made a complaint about the problem they gave me a case number but have not heard anything from them. Ford needs to find a solution and get the problem fixed before somebody has to die in one.
Rack an pinion defect. All over the forums same run of truck between 2011 and 2013 with traction and hill decent mode errors loss of power steering in bad situations like on highway. Ford dealer acknowledged many complaints but Ford will not honor repair. My blinker failed power steering locks up and Ford says have to replace whole system.
I have a 2016 Ford F-150 with roughly 40,000 miles on it. My truck has been out of service since September 16th, with a steering issue. The electronic power assist steering (epas) went out on the truck driving home from costco that evening with my 3 year old son and girlfriend in the car, I attempted to take a right turn and the steering locked up on me, nearly causing us to crash. The next day I took it to bill brandt Ford in brentwood CA, but they wanted $170. 00 just to diagnose it, so I declined the service because I have a friend that is a mechanic for tri delta transit and he was able to diagnose it for free. He found out it was the epas, and that I had to replace the whole rack and pinion, which is about a $1,300. 00 part. This issue should not be happening on such a new vehicle, but since I am 4,000 miles over the bumper to bumper warranty I have no choice but to pay for the new part for my truck. The issue with Ford is, since the truck is so new there are no other companies carrying that part besides Ford at the moment. I called their parts service around September 20th to order the part but they stated it was on back order until October 9th and were not taking any orders. I patiently waited until October 9th and called back to order it and they said it has been pushed back to late October and to call back at the end of the month. This is a real big inconvience for me especially being employed and having a young child, I have been without a vehicle for almost a full month now. I've reached out to Ford and talked to their regional manager trying to explain the issue and if there was anything they could do for me, like a rental car or get the part ASAP for me, but she stated there was nothing they can do. After doing extensive research I have found out that this steering defect is a pretty common issue Ford F-150 owners are experiencing.
While driving I noticed my tires wearing on the outsides after getting an alignment done it still continues. After taking it to a shop and them not being able to find the problem, the noted that the rack and pinion bolt was worn out and they can't replace it without replacing the whole steering assembly.
Steering locked up while driving 40 plus miles an hour on a winding road almost crashed. Had trouble getting it off the tow truck. Towed it home and messed with the fuse box still locked. Got into the truck and manually reset the steering. Started truck and was able to drive. At first thought it was the rack and pinion, but I I would not have just reset and drove as nothing was wrong. I think that it has to do with the electric motor on the actual rack. Very dangerous and very expensive part. This could have been a lawsuit for Ford if my husband would have driven off a cliff as we live in a very mountainous area. This seems to be a component issue and not a rack issue. The motor is not serviceable so I would be very interested to see the inside of the motor but it has been spot welded. This needs to be resolved and not only with the escapes, and other Ford vehicles with the similar parts for steering. Looking at the forums this is a very common thing with this truck that is being overlooked. And I believe it has to do with the cost of the repair. Ford would lose a lot of money. 1600 for the motor alone.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford f150 crewcab 4x4 XLT model. The contact stated that the control panel illuminated and he lost steering while pulling out of his driveway. The contact tried to restart the vehicle but the same issues occurred. The contact had the vehicle towed into the dealer davidson Ford 18621 us-11, watertown, NY 13601. The electronic rack and pinion caused the issue and the contact bought the parts himself and had the dealer replace the parts. The manufuacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 42,383. Tf.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford F-150. While driving at low speeds, the steering wheel became extremely difficult to maneuver without warning. The vehicle was taken to diffee Ford Lincoln (1681 I-40, el reno, ok, (405) 262-4546) where it was diagnosed that the steering rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was provided case number: cas13937768. No further assistance was offered. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.
Suddenly steering wheel lock, advance track sensor lit , extremely hard to turn , very serious safety issue no recall available, but too many issues apparently waiting for a fatality to happen before a recall vehicle stationary/in city/ happened 2 times already I'm afraid this happen while in motion. Diagnosed rack and pinion epas.
I noticed a grinding noise coming from the front end of my truck. I could also feel the grinding though the steering wheel. I took it to local Ford dealership. They told me that it was the steering gear rack/pinion. I reported the problem to Ford and they declined to help with the repair cost and did not acknowledge the problem.

Rack and pinion is shot. The steering would stick while you were driving it over the last 2 yrs. Went to move the truck into our shop and the steering locked up on it.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. While driving 35 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning. The vehicle was taken to len stoler Ford (11275 reisterstown rd, owings mills, MD 21117 (410) 356-7000) where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion steering system needed replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 70,000.
When driving on the highway, there is intermittent resistance when trying to turn the wheel also, the advance track light comes on and that limits the turn signal availability. I have been told by my mechanic that I have to replace the entire rack and pinion steering to fix this, at $1800. There is only 84,000 miles on the truck. Looking online, Ford has recalled thousands of other models during this time, but not the F-150 - why not?? Ford needs to issue a recall on this before someone gets killed.
The contact owns a 2012 Ford F-150. While making a right turn, the steering wheel inadvertently became difficult to maneuver and the power steering fault indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to Ford of port richey (10715 us-19, port richey, FL 34668 (727) 868-9545) where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 33,840.
When driving on the highway, if I make a slight turn to the left, there is resistance when trying to return the wheel to straight ahead. Also, the advance track mechanism (skid control) has been disabled which also limits the turn signal availability. I have been told by my Ford dealer that I have to replace the entire rack and pinion steering mechanism to fix this. This is definitely a safety hazard and hard to understand given that I have less than 80,000 miles on the truck. Ford needs to issue a recall on this before someone gets killed.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at various low speeds, the steering wheel seized without warning. The contact used excessive force to regain control of the steering wheel. Norm reeves Ford of ceritos, CA was made aware of the failure and it was determined that the rack and pinion failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000. The VIN was not available.
Dealership told me that the angle sensors are bad and the entire rack and pinion need replaced, upon further research I've seen vehicles with the same problem suddenly loose steering and were involved in accidents, my vehicle luckily hasn't had any issues yet other than knowing mines going bad and I fell it's a safety concern that I do not want to put myself or others in harm way and the dealership told me there are no recalls for the rack and pinion.
