36 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2012 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 04/06/2017

The truck displayed a service advancetrac error, partially disabling the turn signals while driving a 2012 Ford F-150 with 64,000 miles on it. Ford has diagnosed a failed power steering rack and pinion. Research indicates that failure of the rack and pinion can result in failure of a driver's ability to control the vehicle, especially during turns. Part is apparently failing early.

While driving home I made a right turn on to my street and then the wheel spun all tge way to the left. I had no control of steering and the truck hit a guard rail. Steering wheel doesn't turn the tires at all now. The steering was stiff before accident. I believe that the rack and pinion snapped. Truck is a total lose. No recalls from Ford for my VIN.

39 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2011 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 12/01/2016

Steering locks up while turning left or right while in motion on any road surface. Same problem we had with our other truck that is a one serial number off. With that truck the dealer needed to replace the rack and pinion assembly while under warranty. The truck had 15000 mile. This truck having problem now has 19,500 miles on it. The truck with the problem now is constantly having the steering locking up and is out of warranty now.

40 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2011 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 11/17/2016

Steering lock up while driving. While making a sharp left turn in a parking lot the steering wheel locked up momentarily then became hard to turn. At the same time I heard a loud grinding or buzzing sound and the 'service advance trak' light came on. I had to have the car towed 150 miles to my mechanic. My mechanic conferred with the local Ford dealer and determined that the rack and pinion had to be replace. Truck has 57,000 miles on it. My mechanic expected the part to take up to a week to arrive but it was delivered the same day. Dealer had several units in stock. Seems strange to have that many of this p[art in stock unless there is a design or manufacturing flaw that Ford has not declared. I checked the f150 online forums and there are many references to this problem. Not sure what it takes to make a recall happen but given the seemingly high number of owners affected by this Ford should do something to help. This cost $1745 to fix (including tow) and created a very dangerous situation.

41 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2011 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 10/06/2016

The contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. After leaving an independent mechanic for an oil change, the advance track service warning indicator illuminated. The power steering and turn signals also failed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v316000 (steering). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 135,000.

42 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2012 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 04/14/2016

Vehicle is displaying "service advancetrac" error message when vehicle is turned sharply left or right. When the error message comes on, the turn signals do not function properly. The driver must hold the turn signal switch to activate turn signals anytime needing to change lanes or turn off roadway. Vehicle error has been checked by servicing dealer and an update was performed to abs module to attempt to fix the problem, but explained that a possible need to replace the power rack and pinion to resolve the problem. I am afraid that the power rack and pinion is going to fail and cause me to have an accident, or the turn signals not functioning properly is going to cause an accident. Ford needs to issue a safety recall to fix this failing part in the 2012 f150 model line.

43 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2011 Ford F-150

44 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2011 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 11/17/2015

I have seen many posts about the same issue with fellow 2011 Ford F-150 owners. My truck also locked up on me driving on a city street during lunch hour and when I took it to the dealer (under warranty) they advised after diagnostics that the electronic rack and pinion needed to be changed. After hearing a ridiculous price of $1800. 00 (part and labor) I asked why was it not covered under drivetrain warranty in which they advised it was "electrical. " Ford needs to assist all Ford F-150 owners on this matter if they don't want a huge lawsuit if, god forbid, anyone gets into an accident.

54 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2012 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 09/09/2014

Reversing vehicle as in a parallel parking maneuver with steering locked, service advancetrac warning displayed. Vehicle operated normally but turn signals would not stay on when activated. System automatically reset later after vehicle was shut off and restarted but warning returned during same type of maneuver. Dealer diagnosed code c1963 and c1b00. Steering rack and pinion (aka steering gear) was replaced. Code c1b00 indicates issue with steering angle sensor. The electric power assisted steering (epas) in the f150 has no serviceable parts so when the sensor goes bad, the rack goes bad. Very coincidental that Ford recalled 2014 f150s for a similar problem (see NHTSA recaii14v316. ).

55 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2011 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 10/25/2013

I had my truck scheduled to have a leveling kit and new tires put on. Immediately after the simple install my truck gave an alert on the information screen saying "electric power assist steering fault. Took the truck down the road to nearest Ford dealer and after they ran diagnostic it showed it needed a complete new rack and pinion. $1278. 00 worth without alignment. The mechanics shop who installed the kit is going to pay for it because it was fine before I took it to get kit + tires, however, I have read numerous stories online similar to mine that show the epas going out or that there having problems with it. Ford has had several updates to the epas models I'm aware, hopefully the new one going in will work and I won't ride away only to have a clunking noise to deal with in my front end like so many others I know.

56 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2011 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 09/17/2013

58 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2011 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 03/23/2012

When I started up my F-150 super crew cab with the ecoboost engine the service advanced track warning message came on. As I was driving with this error message on the dash I found that my turn signals would not stay on unless I hold the turn signal lever. Later that day I went to take the truck into the dealer to show them the issue and the error message was gone and the turn signals were now functioning fine. Since the error was no longer on the Ford dealer could not do anything about the issue. The error stayed off for about 6 weeks and then came on again. Now it has been coming on about every 3 or 4 days so I took it to the dealer and they determined that the issue is with the rack and pinion steering assembly and have replaced that. I just go the truck back and have not had time to confirm that the issue is fixed however my confidence level is not there as this is just one of many issues that I have seen on this truck that appear to be "computer" related since shutting off the truck (or as I put it rebooting) will correct the issue.

59 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2011 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 02/04/2012

Newer Ford f150's are equipped with an electronic power assist rack and pinion steering which has problems with popping over bumps or rough terrain. The problem seems to occurring to a lot of owners with the epas steering( f150 forum members over 600 posts on the topic and 57,000 views. Mine is affected as well. I have had my truck into two different Ford dealerships with no resolve. The problem has been isolated to the epas steering rack. The steering feels very loose and sloppy. Traveling over small bumps or rough terrain results in popping, knocking in the steering linkage. When off road, the knocking is more pronounced and the steering feels like you could lose control. Despite numerous calls to Ford by f150 owners, no recalls or TSB's have been issued to address this problem.

61 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2010 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

My truck wonders all over the road and shakes to the point that the passenger is sick. Hard to steer out of ruts and crosswinds blow the truck in to the next lane and you can't control it. Can't take your eyes off the road in front of you to even look at the exit signs because the truck is unsafe and unpredictable to the point that your hands are going to turn numb from lack of blood in your fingers due to the white knuckles from hanging on to the steering wheel so tight. Very unsafe. I have taken it in to the dealer 4 times now and they have replace both front springs and struts and have replaced the rack and pinion 2 times now. I was told that the factory tires are not that great and have soft side walls and that could be the reason as to why it's not fixed and the Ford shocks are under rated for the vehicle. So I have put new bilstien 5100 shocks on all the way around and have put better tires and wheels on it. Truck still does the same thing. This truck is unsafe and have read other complaints on here. Here are the other complaint #'s. 10392353, 10407502, 10336730. I just can't believe Ford has not acknowledged any of the complaints on this site. Someone is going to die or burn to death and I hope it's not me or my family. The only recall I can find on this truck is the door handle and was told it doesn't pertain to my truck. I would like to file for a class action lawsuit if anyone is interested because I know I am not the only one out there who is afraid to drive their $46,000 truck that's not even 2 years old yet. This truck was suppose to be built Ford tough. I will be trading this p. O. S in as soon as I can cough up all of the negative equity that I have acquired due to the high price of this lemon. I have said my peace and now it's on file just in case I crash and burn, at least I know my family will be taken care of now (I hope).

64 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2006 Ford F-150

While driving I heard a pop and the truck jerked to the right. I had no control of the steering. I hit a large tree stump. It caused several thousand dollars of damage. While the insurance appraiser and body shop owner were looking at the truck they discovered that the screw from the tie rod into the rack and pinion steering was stripped. It fell apart taking away all my control of steering the truck. Ford refuses to even look at the truck.

65 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2006 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 12/28/2005

While driving I noticed that the steering seemed sloppy and unresponsive. Difficult to keep the vehicle in the lanes especially going into or out of curves. Upon reaching my destination I asked my associate to observe the steering components while I turned the wheel with the engine off. He immediately noticed the entire rack and pinion assembly shifting back and forth. Upon further inspection I found that of the two bolts that hold the unit to the chassis one had a loose nut and the other had no nut at all. The threads on the bolt w/o the nut appeared to never have even had a nut but I can not be sure of this. Needless to say I was a little more than upset that I had put myself and others at great risk over poor assembly quality control.
