Driving down navy rd. During rush hour traffic when spare tire fell off my 1998 Ford f150. Cable holding tire snapped. Spare tire was struck by another vehicle that was behind me. Was told by other owners of this type vehicle of similar situations, of spare tire just falling off vehicle because retracting cable breaking. Could only imagine what would have happened if this would have happened on the interstate.

I have a 2000 f150 and am concerned about the safety of the spare tire. I had a flat tire and had to change it out and put on the spare. The spare had indentations on the sidewalls that were caused from the spare tire mechanism
( the way the spare tire is held on). I wrote a letter to Ford and sent a picture of the tire. I questioned the integrity of the tire if I had to drive on it for a long period of time. Ford contacted me and told me to contact the tire manufacturer (general tire) because it is a tire defect. I again explained that the tire had indentations on the sidewalls caused from something in how the spare is held on under the truck. I asked how this could be caused from a defective tire? the Ford representative didn't care and gave me the number to general tire.

Luckily I was driving in a parking lot and had just crossed a speed bump. My spare tire fell off the underside of the truck. The spare tire cable had broken. As of this date I have not yet notified the dealer. As this is a safety issue I fully expect Ford to pay for the replacement. I could have been traveling on the freeway and caused a huge accident when the cable broke and dropped the tire.

The spare tire disconnected from the vehicle.
The spare tire had gouges that distributed around the tire's sidewall. Dealer advised that this type of tire wear, when the tire is placed in the spare tire's cradle was fairly common with Ford trucks. Consumer requested assistance in replacing defective tire.
The spare tire was inoperative (wrangler r7/s, p265-70-r17).
Metal receiver underneath the truck that holds emergency spare tire in place has damaged the sidewall of tire, 8 grooves in sidewall. Dealership examined problem, and was covering part of the expense for a replacement tire. Please provide any additional information / attachments.
Spare tire lift and holder.
Tire developed a 3in. X2in. X1/2in. Bulge. Tire was swapped with spare. Since then the tread has had complete failure with a separation of approx. 3 feet around the circumference of the tire. All of this occured while being in the spare tire position. (dot number: w208 tiresize: p235/70r16).
Spare tire was bruised while mounted under the tire assembly, underneath vehicle; dealer/manufacturer were notified. Consumer installed a used mud flap between truck frame and new tire under vehicle.

While traveling home from vacation on interstate hwy. Driving appx. 65 mph. For appx 4 hours left rear tire exploded, shredding all the way around the rim on the outer side. I went to purchase a new tire and was told that a recall was coming out on wilderness tires. I called my Ford dealer and was told no decision had been made as to the tire size, type vehicle and who will relace the tires. I sent firestone an e-mail message and recieved a general reply stating only 15 in. Tires were involved in the recall. I still hane not replaced the spare tire on this leased vehicle I'm sorry to say it sounds like I might have to shop at g. M. . . A gener. (dot number: w208 tiresize: p23570r16).
While driving on interstate 10 the cap of the tire peeled off. This was a spare tire that was in use. I don't know the exact mileage on the tire but I assume with low mileage. We do not have any pictures or the tire. This incident happened before the recall was announced. ( dot number: tire size: p235/70r16 ).
My wife and I went to georgia on vacation from texas. In mississippi while my wife was driving around 5-6 pm she had a tire separation in the drivers side rear. She was able to keep the truck under control and pulled over to the side of the road. The tread had separated from the tire but the tire did not lose the air. This is probably why she was able to control the truck. The tread slung around the wheel well and beat up the inside of the wheel well causing some visible damage. The truck has still not been repaired. I installed the spare tire on the vehicle and called it a night and got us a room. When I arrived in GA. I went to numerous tire dealers to try to find a matching tire to replace but was told that the tire was out of production but if I looked around I might find one. I finally did find on at a firestone dealer in atlanta. When I returned to texas I immediately removed the remaining firestone tires because I felt that something was not right and replaced them with 4 goodyear tires. I still have 2 of the original tires and the one I bought in GA. I believe in the garage. I did think about calling someone due to the damage to my truck but the firestone dealer in atlanta said that the tire was out of warranty and firestone would not do anything about it. I thought many times about making a complaint but did not know how to go about doing so until the recent press and congressional coverage. I thought you might want to know that maybe there are some other models that need to be looked at. ( dot number: tire size: p23575r15 ).

Emergency spare tire has never been used. Had taken vehicle to wal mart to have tires rotated. Mechanic could not use spare tire due to damage from storage of cross board supports. Tire had severe indentations. Good year ps235/704x16 sl bsw.
Grooves worn into spare tire sidewall due to rubbing agains frame beneath truck bed. Tire has never been used and now may be unsafe since the grooves are 15-20% into the sidewall. Ford dealer referred me to the manufacturer who denied any problem.
Spare tire damaged due to design of the mounting system which cut grooves into the sidewall.
Spare on the truck is 16' and the truck comes with 17' tires from the factory. Spare tire is too small for 4 wheel drive.
Spare tire design places the rubber sidewall directly in contact with the metal undercarriage, resulting in friction/damage to sidewall. Mjs.
Ford spare tire design places rubber sidewall directly in contact with the metal undercarriage, friction between metal/rubber causes abrasions on sidewall,(8 areas of severe abrasions).
The spare tire that is mounted on vehicle is rubbing against the frame or body of vehicle, causing the tire to be worn in 8 different places. Consumer noticed this while changing a flat, the rubber tread had worn down to the plastic. Please provide any further information.
Spare tire which is placed in rear of truck and resting on frame very tightly caused 8 grooves on sidewall of tire which cut through. Consumer felt there should be something like a piece of wood or plastic placed in between tire and frame , and did not touch tire.
I purchased a 1999 f150 on 5/9/00. I recently bought new tires for my truck and found out that one of the wheels was bent on the inside. The bend in the wheel was bad enough that the wheel could not be balanced properly and would wobble. I then proceded to put on my spare tire and noticed that the spare tire was a different size than what was on the truck when I purchased it. The size on the truck is 255/ 70r 16. Manufacturer required size is 235/70r/16. I brought this problem to the selling dealer and set an appointment for them to take a look. I am asking for your help because I feel I have been taken advantage of and they will think I caused the problem. I did not cause this problem. This truck was sold to me in this condition. I just now found out I had this problem just because I wanted new tires before winter hits. Any information you can give me will be very helpful. Thank you very much.
Had a flat tire for the first time since we purchased vehicle. The spare has been in the carrier since the pick up was new, we bought from the original owner, we know them personally. The spare tire had 8 ribs cut into the tire from the carrier. The tire was in the correct position, with the correct air pressure, and tight in the carrier. The tire was worn badly enough that it is unsafe to use. There is no way to know that this has happened until you have a flat tire and have to use the spare. The tire will have to be replaced. We are going to contact Ford or a dealer and see what they will do to correct this problem. Dt.
Spare tire rubbing on cross member and cutting through sidewall making tire unusable.
Removed originial unused spare tire from under frame location. The Ford F-150 under frame mounting design caused 8 wear points (from vibration) at least 3/16" deep into outer sidewall. This has created a potential unsafe tire blowout condition. I have had this truck for only 16 months (@16,295 miles) and find this new spare now unsafe and unusable. I would like this investigated and other owners notified of this situation if warranted. I will be contacting ukiah Ford this week and I would like to have this tire replaced. Contact me if needed. Ken johannes. ( dot number: tire size: 235-70r16 ).
Spare tire not of the same type as the other tires.
Sidewall tire wear on spare tire. Returned as a warrantee issue and the dealership would not replace. ( dot number: tire size: 265x70rx17 ).
