Noticed steering wheel very hard to turn. Checked power steering fluid which was ok. Researched problem online and found dozens of similar complaints reported on Ford customer forums and elsewhere online mentioning that the u-joint(s) on the lower steering shaft possibly rust and corrode and become very stiff. When turning corners wheel does not readily recenter itself. Fearful that steering joints could fail, seize or break resulting in a complete loss of steering and serious injury or death. Saw that Ford redesigned the steering shaft after 2006 and the new Ford part looks much different than the original shaft in my 2006 truck. Sprayed some penetrating oil on both u-joints yesterday and steering was noticeably much easier within 5 minutes. Then sprayed some liquid wrench lubricating oil (lightweight aerosol oil) on both joints and drove the truck. Steering was like new and steering wheel easy to turn. Do not know however if this "oiling fix" will last. Ford is aware of this issue as they redesigned the steering shaft/u-joints and had hundreds of complaints. Defect in design of critical steering component, Ford is aware and redesigned steering shaft and u-joints. Note: other customers with non-Ford vehicles and Ford vehicles other than the F-150 have reported numerous similar complaints.

When maneuvering in the parking lot, the epas unit failed creating the steering wheel to be extremely hard to move. This issue was so bad I could no longer drive the truck back due to safety concerns. I am having the truck towed to the Ford dealer to see what they can do about this issue. The service advancedtrac information display appeared on my dash as well as electronic powersteering assist system failure. When turning as far right as possible the truck would make a really loud metal to metal noise. This truck is no longer able to drive safely, hopefully Ford will take action to fix this issue before its too late. Otherwise, I am still going to have to pay out of pocket around $1200-1500 to have this fixed.
While driving on interstate 81 near dixie caverns, virginia, while entering curve on interstate, the steering seemed to fail and would not turn. Impacted the guardrail and came to a stop. No other vehicles were involved. The system to alert 911 also failed. The horn honked for approximately one minutethe side curtain airbags deployed. Truck was damaged on the entire passenger side. Inquired at dealership about steering problems with Fords and was told there were none.

While driving with a 5,500 pound camp trailer in tow the vehicle developed significant vibration and feed back from the road. The problem came about after approximately 20k miles on the truck. I would notice it primarily over joints in the road and any road imperfections also notice it and hear a clunking when off road on dirt roads. The clunking is intermittant but is there. It feels as if there is a loose component in the steering assembly which then can be felt in the steering wheel. I can notice both with trailer and without more when temperatures are higher such as 80 degrees or more. Not so much when cold but I am still able to get road feedback in the steering wheel at lower temps just not as bad. You can especially notice the vibration/feedback in colder temps if holding the steering wheel at its lowest point (bottom of wheel) while driving. I took the vehicle to the dealer several times and they allege they could not duplicate the problem. I have taken the vehicle back now 4 separate times and on the last time I showed the service adviser how I can grasp the steering shaft in the engine compartment and manually by hand turn the shaft back and forth as if in a steering motion and you can hear a loud clicking noise coming from somewhere either in the rack unit itself or the steering shafts. I am not sure where the noise is actually coming from but clearly in the steering assembly somewhere. I have great concern over safety and have now read many similar complaints including complete steering failure. Sounds like Ford does not exactly know how to go about repairs and so reluctant to replace any parts in case that does not fix issue. I understand that theory but wish they would at least try something for safety. If there is not a safety issue it is still an eerie feeling driving a truck at highway speed with looseness and vibration in the steering assembly.
While driving in a straight line on us 395 north bound, north of pearsonville, CA, the steering began to feel loose with a "clunk" or "popping" that could be felt in the steering wheel. This was very concerning, and annoying, and lasted for 3 hours until I arrived at my destination. The outside air temp was about 90 degrees, and this "clunk" becomes more pronounced as the temperature rises. I have serious concerns with this new electronic power assist steering (epas) and the potential for total steering failure. Ford had serious issues with the 2011 explorer epas, and now the new f150 (beginning with 2011 model) with epas is beginning to show the same problem. I was at perry Ford in poway, CA yesterday, and the service writer stated that two new f150's lost all steering control. . Read more...

Epas steering failure. While making a left turn the epas electronic power assist steering stopped working. Though we kept turning the wheel, truck did not make the turn, it seemed to be trying to turn and turning slowly. Then all of a sudden the epas started working again. Truck shook and jerked, as the epas tried to correct for steering input. Brakes were applied to emergency stop the truck and truck ended up off the road, on to the shoulder of the road.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the steering box failed. The steering wheel would spin without resistance and would not catch. The manufacturer was notified of the failure who advised that there were no recalls and offered no further assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 214,000.

Service advance trac light comes on when reversing with wheel fully turned, slight grinding noise heard. Called dealership and told not a concern -- the new systems "do that". Mentioned at next service appointment and told nothing is wrong. Noise gets intermittently worse, but dealership is "unable to replicate problem" before the warranty expires in March 2014. In July 2014 (26,000 miles), the sat light comes on whenever the wheel is fully turned in forward, reverse, and park, and a loud grinding metal on metal sound occurs. The dealership could hear it this time and diagnosed steering gear assembly failure. The service representative stated on July 18, 2014 that the service advance trac light indicates this problem and that the vehicle is not safe to drive. This should be a recall before injuries or deaths occur due to steering failure.
2012 Ford F-150 pickup trucks do not have a grab handle on the drivers side a pliiar. Ford F-150 trucks are higher than passenger cars and require a driver to pull or hold onto an object to enter the drivers side of the vehicle. Ford recommends drivers pull on the steering wheel as an assist when entering the F-150. It appears that repetitive and strenuous pulling on the steering wheel, particularly by larger drivers over 6 feet tall and weighing over 200 pounds, when entering the F-150, can cause steering components to break which could lead to steering failure, or problems while the vehicle is in motion. Suggested solution: Ford has a grab handle on the passenger side a pillar to assist passengers when entering the truck. Evidently, Ford engineers see a need to place a grab handle for occupants to use when entering F-150 trucks. To avoid possible steering mechanism damage, Ford should place a grab handle on the drivers side a pillar which would remove the potential damage to the steering mechanism.
Steering failure: my 1997 Ford f150 had a steering failure. VIN:1ftdf1861vka90060. The steering shaft separated from the power steering box. The steering shaft connection is aluminum and the gear on the power steering box is steel. The aluminum wore and the steel, naturally did not. Basic engineering failure. Described exactly in recall no. 03s02 a very thorough search showed no recalls or maintenance notices. Please, please, please, if you have a 1997, Ford f150 have the connection of the steering shaft to the power steering box check immediately. I cannot imagine a worst failure in a vehicle. No steering.
