6 Steering Gear Box problem of the 2001 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 09/13/2001

Loose steering, second (replacement) steering gear. The original steering gear was noisy and the dealer replaced it with a used, rebuilt unit at 3,264 miles. Current (used) gear has excessive free play, the vehicle wanders and is difficult to control on the highway. Ford refuses to supply the dealer with a new gear. The dealer refuses to replace or adjust the loose gear. I feel the safety of the vehicle is in question with the used gear in it due to lack of traceability of the gear in case of a recall or safety campaign.

9 Steering Gear Box problem of the 1999 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 04/15/2001

We could hear and feel a "clunking" through the steering wheel. Took the truck to the dealer to have it checked. Found that the lower steering shaft was broken and was advised to stop driving the vehicle until it could be repaired. Was also told by the service manager that this problem was fairly common with the f150 and in fact they had the required part to fix it in stock. This truck is only two years old and has never been driven off-road or involved in any type of accident. I am very concerned that this type of failure could occur, and apparantly is not uncommon. The break was apparantly in a "knuckle" in the steering shaft, which is why we could still steer the vehicle at all.

12 Steering Gear Box problem of the 1996 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 02/25/2001

After experiencing increasing sloppiness in steering, mechanic friend checked out the problem. One of the three bolts holding the steering box had backed out approximately 1 inch allowing the gear box to move away from the vehicle frame. Contact with local dealer in virginia (truck originally bought in PA. ) stated that the vehicle is beyond the three year/ 36,000 mile warranty. The stripped area on the steering gear box would require replacement of entire mechanism costing approximately $500. I identifed that there is no evidence of this part ever having been removed from the vehicle and that it appears to have been stripped when assembled. (assembly done in canada. ) contact on Monday (2/26) to the local Ford customer inquiry line in chantilly, va did not reveal much - no service bulletin could be identified. I volunteered and gave them my vehicle number after providing them my address and a description of the problem - stating that it was an assembly problem and that the bolt was over tightened. I also went on to describe that there was always a looseness in the steering and that recently it had gotten worse resulting in me drifting off of the road several times. It was only after my wife indicated that she too was experiencing a noticeable increased sloppiness in the steering and another recent drifting off the road, that I had a mechanic friend take a look at the steering and identify the problem.

15 Steering Gear Box problem of the 2000 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 04/14/2000

I was trying to avoid rear ending the car in front of me because traffic had come to an abrupt stop, so I jerked my truck to the right as hard as I could. I could not steer out of it because the steering box broke. I hit the car in front of me on his right rear bumper with my left front bumper. Ron blackwell Ford's head mechanic said the steering box breaking is a safety feature. I have never heard of such a thing. I don't believe that hitting a car at 30 mph should make the steering box break. The only damage done to my truck was on the left side of my bumper. The headlight wasn't even broke. I think it broke from the extreme pressure of turning it so hard trying to avoid a collision not from hitting the car.
