Ford F-250 owners have reported 27 problems related to carrier/rack (under the equipment category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Carrier/rack problem of the 2015 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 12/27/2020

The first time it occurred the truck was five years old I was driving on an interstate highway at highway speed, passed over an expansion joint of a bridge, entire truck began to shake uncontrollably, I thought a had blown a tire, but as I slowed to pull to the side of the road, the truck "smoothed out" and I was able to continue on my way. However it happened again two more times that trip, each at highway speed (55-75) and would be "triggered" by small bumps in the road. I took it to a local garage they rotated the tires, did a front end alignment and replaced the steering dampener. Problem continued to reoccur. Has been back to a different garage 4 additional times: tie rod, drag link, track bar joints/bushings, shocks, all have been replaced, however while at highway speeds small bumps in the road continue to induce uncontrollable front end shaking. So far I have paid just under $2500, the problem continues and my mechanic is unsure what is left to try to correct the problem. Online search reveals this to be the "Ford death wobble".

2 Carrier/rack problem of the 2012 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 11/21/2020

While drive my 2012 Ford F-250 at speeds of 65+, the steering wheel start to shake violently after driving over a bump in the road. I have researched this and found it is commonly known as a death wobble. The videos found on youtube replicate it correctly. I'm not sure what other damage it may have caused to my truck. It has been happening since I bought the truck. I've bought an adjustable track bar and tried many different tires combinations. I have not found a solution.

4 Carrier/rack problem of the 2019 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 06/01/2020

I was driving on the highway when the front end of my truck began to violently shake including the steering wheel! I was going 65 mph and I could barley hold onto the steering wheel it was shaking so violently! both of my wrists are swollen and bruised as well as my right thumb. My nail on my right thumb is cracked and bruised as well as a result of holding onto the steering wheel as hard as I could. I immediately slowed down as soon as I could but I swerved into the other lane and then into a ditch. I lost control of the vehicle due to this violent shaking. This has happened multiple times to me, it seems to get worse each time! this truck is not safe and I want justice. There was another vehicle coming in the opposite direction, the highway I was on was a two lane highway. If he would have been 3 seconds closer I would have had a head on collision going 65 mph! the truck shakes so violently and it is terrifying!.

5 Carrier/rack problem of the 2014 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 11/30/2019

Driving at highway speed 65-70 mph on CA-99 on 11-30-2019 between bakersfield and fresno I experienced several "death wobbles. " this vehicle was repaired for this problem at future Ford in sacramento, CA. On 03oct19 by replacing steering damper and track bar. Also an alignment was done. Evidently the problem still persists on certain occasions.

6 Carrier/rack problem of the 2019 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 10/15/2019

Local highway driving the truck shake uncontrollably for about 5-10 minutes or until the truck slows to a near stop. The shake will also occur when hitting a pot hole, going over railroad tracks or braking. The first experience occurred at 17,000 miles and has since continued to a current 26,000 miles. After taking to Ford dealership service they have indicated that several trucks were experiencing the same and the part(s) were on back order. After approx. 30 days, the dampner came in, however, the defect has occurred several times since. Returned to Ford service and had a tire alignment done. To no avail, the same issue has occurred again. I have researched this defect and found the Ford community is calling this occurrence as the "death wobble".

7 Carrier/rack problem of the 2017 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 02/19/2019

While driving at appx. 70-75 mph after hitting a rough patch or bumps on the road the truck began to shake vigorously, I had to slow to 35-40 mph to get it to stop. I have just had the tires balance, rotated, and inflated to the specs. I was just in the dearlship on Friday 02/15/19 and mentioned it to them they said they would look at it and would be $120 diagnostic fee never got an answer back. This morning alone I had experienced it 3 times in the 40 miles I drive to work. This is a huge safety issue and to experience it that many times in a 40 mile drive to work is not ok. Luckily my kids and wife weren't in the truck they would have never rode in it again. I have 41k miles on my tuck and this isn't the first time it has happened. Before taking the tries to be balanced and rotated fixed the issue so it seamed but right after laving the tire shop it happened. I will be taking the truck back to Ford again for them to tell me there is nothing wrong. What is the fix for this? it seams to a common problem is Ford doing anything to help its customers? now after this run of sudden shakes my sun roof will not open seams to be jammed or off track from the violent shaking not sure what else is broken or no longer works after this.

8 Carrier/rack problem of the 2018 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 02/04/2019

Front windshield cracked the whole way across after using defroster. The vehicle was turned on and the defroster was turned on as I waited for vehicle to warm up I went back inside the house. When I went back out and got in the vehicle the window was cracked almost the whole way across in a perfect line with 2 peaks that came up about a foot in on each side. The crack that went the whole way across was about 8 inches above dashboard. I have only 13000. 00 miles on the vehicle and bought it new around 11 months ago. I don't know if they will cover this as they said the coverage on the window had to be under 12000. 00 miles or 12 months whatever came first. It's really upsetting to think the window would crack from defroster and that they may not cover it.

9 Carrier/rack problem of the 2017 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 01/17/2019

At approximately 35,500 miles I had the track bar, a new steering box and pitman arm replaced because of wear, at approximately 36,000 the truck developed "death wobble" 3 times over small bumps at about 50mph . I took it immediately back to Ford and they replaced the steering stabilizer. I was driving south on I 81 in the fast lane thinking they fixed and the truck again went into death wobble at approximately 65 -70 mph and had to brake extremely hard down to about 35 mph to get it to stop almost causing a major pile up as there was heavy traffic at that time. After I got back I dropped the truck at Ford again and told him drive it, which he wouldn't , he said he checked all the steering components and they were tight, he said "take to some place that has a better alignment rack, so I did that and paid out of my own pocket for it. It did not fix the problem, I replaced the steering box to a top of the line box out of my own pocket even though it had been replaced . I have not been able to drive my truck safely since Nov. Of 2018 and it is now Jul. 29th 2019. I cant let anyone else drive it for fear of killing an innocent person, even the mechanic that put the second steering box in did the alignment again is scared to drive it because it happened with him after the 2nd replacement box. After looking for the problem and solutions I have found this is a huge issue. If this is not taken care of people are going die, if they have not already. It is very hard to believe there are not deaths and very serious injuries caused by this as I have been thrown into the other lane several times and drop a huge amount of speed very quickly . I paid $60,000 dollars for a brand new truck and now no one can safely drive it, even the mechanic's are scared to drive it. I have had death wobble at least 13 to 15 times from January until now and at speeds from 45 to 70. Please help !!.

10 Carrier/rack problem of the 2017 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 11/09/2018

The antenna mount is broken and very poorly made. The service manager said that is what happens when you take it through a car wash, checked 2018 same model and the mount has been changed to a heavy duty mounting bracket. When I was driving, it was waving in the wind and at one time came out completly. I was afraid it would hit someone or something and do harm or damage to someone or something including killing someone. I had to use some type of agent to hold it down but that has to be replaced every month. This is not acceptable, and any vehicle should be eligible to go through a car wash. Vehicle was brought to hawk Ford in oak lawn, IL (invoice #841990) with no repairs being done. Was told it was my problem to deal with.

13 Carrier/rack problem of the 2012 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 03/01/2016

Ford f250 truck - front end suspension and 4 wheel drive problems. Since March of this year 2016, @ 90k miles, while driving down the road, traveling around 50 mph, the front suspension on my Ford f250 started shaking and wobble uncontrollable. This has happened probably 20 times or so. The wobble was so serious and scary. I would have to apply my brakes and hold onto the steering wheel with a strong grab, to keep my truck on the road. Other vehicles around mine, would scatter out of my way. On October 17, 2016, I had the steering damper replaced and the track bar ball replaced, costing $361. 71. "death wobble", was still happening. Last month on November 14, 2016, I took my truck into our local Ford dealership for repairs on the suspension problem - "death wobble". Repairs included, bar - front suspension ti, joint asy - ball, nut, end asy - drag link rod, rod, rod asy - drag link, adjuster asy @ 2, all replaced with new parts. Replace drag ink and end, install adjusters for castor, front end alignment (4 wheel drive). The Ford dealership was even aware of this existing problem with the Ford f250 suspension, from previous complains and repairs. My repair cost was $1205. 07. Now my 4 wheel drive will not lock in on the front end. I have an appointment, taking my truck back to Ford dealership tomorrow morning for additional repairs. This is a major safety issue on these vehicles and something must be done about it. A recall should and must be mandatory for the public safety. This issue will end up killing someone (if, it has not already) if, a recall is not ordered immediately.

14 Carrier/rack problem of the 2011 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 06/17/2015

Was getting on the interstate and went over a separation crack at about 55 mph when the truck front axle / suspension started to vibrate violently / shaking uncontrollably. I started to put a secure hold on the steering wheel and at the same time applying the brakes. After slowing down to about 35 mph the truck started to smooth out, pulled over to the side of the expressway, checked the truck out, did not find any problem. I continued at reduced speed to home and checked it out again, but did not find anything. Prior to that incident, I had complained to the dealer about what I thought was a rough ride, went with a mechanic from the dealership for a ride, and he said it rides like the other f250's. After the vibration incident, I decided to check the left front shock, removed it and thought that it was not working to well. Took it to the dealership and they said it was a little bad, and they would replace it, I then ask them about the right shock, and they did not think that the right side was bad, I then stated that I was told that they are replaced in pairs, and that the rears should also be replaced. They said no, but after more discussion, they did agree to replace the right shock {customer satisfaction}. It did seem to ride better. How ever on the evening of Friday 7 August, the truck had another episode on a different road, like it had over a month ago. So I don't think that shocks are the total problem. . It is possible that under different weather conditions, this problem could injure or kill many people!!! so who is to blame ???? not me !!! . ,.

15 Carrier/rack problem of the 2009 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 08/21/2013

Took vehicle to Ford dealership for routine maintenance and to diagnose loose steering issue at highway speed. Vehicle was diagnosed with failed track bar ball joints, track bar bushings and excessive side to side movement. Front axle dust seals were failed and would need to be replaced. Steering gear box was determined to be failing and need to be replaced. Parts for the gear box were on national back order with 120 day time frame for delivery. The dealership indicated that the combined effect of the failures would have been a catastrophic event if at highway speed. Total cost is in excess of $2,300. 00 for parts and labor. This vehicle has only been used as a routine driver. Based upon the number of posts for this typical issue a national recall should be issued.

There is no way to secure rear facing infant child seat into vehicle. No clips or rings to attach the carrier to. Seatbelt alone is not sufficient. Infant carrier is equipped with clips on both sides to attach to secure rings at base of seat. My Ford focus has clips for three rear facing sears. Why not the truck?.

17 Carrier/rack problem of the 2009 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 07/05/2011

We have a 2009 Ford f250 superduty truck. It has a factory installed Ford class five hitch. The unit failed-- the hitch weld seperatied at the receiver and crossmember frame. You can see the 3/8 inch gap from where weld did not adhear and where the bottom and top plate have large cracks. We towed our boat about 350 miles to lake powell and then home. About 6 weeks after we got home we noticed the hitch was not on center. Upon inspection I saw the hitch was damaged and called holmes tutle Ford. They said because my mileage exceeded the waranty allowance, it was out of warranty. I removed hitch and took it to jim click Ford. Because it was out of warranty on miles on the truck, the service manager said I should not expect a call. Tounge weight is approx 400# and total weight on the trailer and boat is not moer than 6,000 lbs we want the manufacturer to replace the hitch. We have the unit ready for inspection and I believe it will be obvious to almost anyone that the weld failed.

18 Carrier/rack problem of the 1999 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 11/13/2007

I was driving down the at around 45mph when I felt a bump in the back of my truck. I looked back and my spare tire had fallen off the underside of my truck. No other cars were around so I turned around and got the tire off the road and put it in the truck bed. I looked under the truck and the cable that held the tire in place was frayed and broken. If I had been going town a busy freeway this could have caused an accident. 1999 Ford f250 superduty 4x4 built prior to 3/22/99. To repair I will have to purchase new spare tire carrier from Ford.

19 Carrier/rack problem of the 2003 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 04/07/2006

I had a near wreck in my 2003 f250 super duty crew cab, larriat trim package when the overhead console became dislodged from the roof of the cab, and fell into the interior of the cab landing at my feet, and interfering with the gas and brake pedals. No fire or wreck, but certainly a near miss. I am aware that the hard plastic molding around the overhead console is very brittle, and can crack and become dislodged in not just my truck, but many other people that I have questioned regarding this matter. I was even informed by a local dealership that they cannot keep this item in stock in their parts department because everyone's overhead consoles are breaking. This is a rather large piece of plastic that can interfere with the drivers ability to control the vehicle, and is a saftey matter that should be addressed. Obviously the particular type of plastic used to mold this console is not appropriate, and should be replaced with a more plyable, and less brittle material, or it should be better secured to the roof of the vehicle to avoid complaints such as this.

I just have a question and this may not be where I need to be but if not could you direct me in the correct direction? I purchased a used pick up from rainier Nissan but not at their site in centrailia. They came to yakima for a 3 or 4 day sale. I purshased a 3/4 ton pick up. I didn't notice til later that there was no spare tire or spare tire rack. They were both gone along with the electrical plug in. One of the guys I dealt with sent another guy out to check that it had a spare and a jack and he didn't say anything to the contrary when he returned. What are my rights? I talked to a tire dealer and he said they are required by law to provide a spare tire and jack on a 3/4 ton or more. Any info or direction would be helpful. Thank you, theresa randall.
