Ford F-250 owners have reported 30 problems related to power steering pump (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
2014 Ford f250 high pressure fuel pump exploded and sent metal throughout my field system. Was driving to houston going 80 mph on ih 10 and my truck came to a stop and power steering turned off so I could barely get it off the highway. 18 wheelers were going by me going over 80 mph. We were almost killed. Was left in 106 degree heat for over 2 hrs waiting for a tow truck. Ford dealer in houston where it was towed (100 miles) wants $14,000. 00 to fix the truck.

At 145,000 miles, a steering issue developed. 3 miles away from home, at a 4-way stop, I turn right to go to work. The steering wheel gets "stuck" and is hard to turn back to the left to center the f250 in my lane. 1 mile later, another right turn, and the problem becomes scary. The wheel is stiff to turn to the left and then all of a sudden the steering wheel and the truck zoom to the left, I steer right and it is slow and stiff and then responds without warning zipping me to the right. I'm on the highway at this point, doing 35mph waiting for the problem to clear up. At first, the problem cleared up within a mile, but today it took 5 miles. The problem is then gone for the rest of my 30 mile trip to work. Same thing, same place everyday. This also happens on the way home from work. A mile away from the parking space I have the first symptom and then all hell brakes loose on the next turn. Crazy steering for a few miles and then smooth sailing the rest of the way home. Planning on replacing the steering gearbox and power steering pump this weekend.

We have no problem with our truck until a couple of days the power steering gearbox stop working while driving. It barley works if the truck is at a stand still it will not turn at all. Their is nothing wrong with my power steering pump. I look at the top of the gear-box and notice a leak coming around the set screw that holds the bearings.

2006 Ford f250 moving, 2 lane road, in mountains ,suddenly started to steer erratically - managed to keep it out of the opposite lane more by good fortune than anything. Power steering pump had begun to fail.

I was driving the speed limit of 65 mph on the interstate, when the truck went over a rough spot in the road and began to shake uncontrollably. I could not steer do the the steering wheel and the front of the truck shaking so violently. I managed to get the truck slowed down quickly and over onto the median. I stopped and got out to check around and under the vehicle and found nothing. As I attempted to get up to speed and merge back onto the highway the truck started shaking again. After getting up to about 50 mph it smoothed out. I took the truck to discount tire and had the wheels rebalanced and the front checked with no problems noted. The truck has done this about 4 or 5 more times since and it always after you go over a rough spot in the road. The vehicle shakes so bad that you cannot control it and you have to stand on the brake to slow it down enough to be able to steer it. This can result in a major accident or death!!! I have also had problems with the transmission since the truck was new. When it shifts from 1st to 2nd sometimes there is a long delay where the throttle is pushed down and the truck does nothing for approximately 5 seconds, this has occurred numerous times in intersections and can cause you to be struck in the side. I have had the truck to the shop 3 times and they changed the transmission body and the transmission pump and it still continues to have the problem. . .

Steering on vehicle became increasingly difficult. The power steering pump lost half of the fluid. Replaced the power steering pump. Sixty days later the steering gear box bound up and would not allow the wheels to be turned. The steering gear box was replaced.
I was safely operating my Ford f 250 on a concrete bridge in pine island florida . I was traveling @ 63 mph and was making a slight left bend . The truck crossed an expansion joint and went into uncontrollable violent oscillation of suspension and steering . The oscillation was such that the steering wheel was difficult to hold on to and my first thought was multiple flat tires or a wheel came off the vehicle . Hard braking to under 30 mph was what was required to stabilize steering to "normal" . That was the first time this occurred and I discussed with my service adviser at the Ford dealership that I purchased the truck from. I inspected vehicle and could see no damage of obvious problems . I monitor tire pressure regularly , have no modifications to suspension or steering on vehicle . The next time this occurred 12/26/13, I was traveling approx. 65 mph and again was in a slight left hand turn and crossed an expansion joint near birmingham alabama on highway 65. I was surrounded by dense 65 mph traffic and the truck was uncontrollable. This time there was a near accident as I has a semi tractor trailer both close behind me and to the right side of me . Once again I had to brake rapidly to avoid crossing lanes putting my family at risk of serious accident . This is a hazardous condition and the dealer has no explanation. The force is violent enough that it could easily damage parts of the truck . As a side note , the fuel pump came apart and slung metal fragments throughout the fuel system in truck within one hour of the violent oscillation.
After appox. One hour at 65 mph on cruise control I disengaged the cruise control , coasting to a speed of about 25 mph or less to make a upcoming left turn. As I started to turn I pressed on the brake and found it was without assist, and the same was true for the steering. I applied as much pressure as I could to both the brake pedal and the steering wheel and fortunately made the turn with out incident. I tapped the fuel pedal and both the brakes and steering assist returned to normal. I've had the problem before with loss of brakes but have always been going straight. I report this to the dealership but since the vehicle doesn't show a error code they can't fix it! at least if I die in a crash this will be my record. I will report the truck again to the dealer but they wont fix it. I have seen that others are experiencing also. I won't let my wife drive the truck it is not safe!!! this is a design flaw the system is drawing fluid for both the brakes and steering from the powersteering pump, also I believe from what I have read the fluid travels thru a screen(filter) which can plug starving the system of fluid needed to properly operate the steering and brakes.
Intermittent problem with steering. Sometimes steering is fine. Other times truck wants to pull left after making a left turn. Same condition after right turns. I've had a couple of experiences while steering is pulling right or left, trying to correct the trucks jumps from lane to lane. No accident yet ! very scary! I looked the problem up on the internet they call this problem " memory steer". I also read the problem is the steering pump. The spools in the pump that shuttles power steering fluid to right or left turns are sticking. I strongly suggest a recall before a fatal accident happens.
While driving down the road the steering on the truck got tight and felt like it had lost power sterring. It was difficult to keep the vehicle on the road. This has happened on several occasions. It is currently in the shop and having the steering pump changed. Hope this corrects the issue.
I own a 2005 Ford F-250 4x4. At slow speeds as taking off from a stop the front end shifts from left to right so hard I cannot steer the truck. I must stop and move the steering wheel left to right a few times before starting to move again. Its like the steering pump is pushing the steering wheel left to right.

Temporary loss of power steering at low speeds and tight turns. Problem is intermittent and has caused me to almost run off the road while pulling my boat or motorcycle trailer. Ford dealer checked power steering pump and found it was pumping less fluid than required. Replaced pump. Problem still exists.
The power steering pump pulley popped off the pump shaft after a blowout of the left front tire on my 2002 Ford f250 diesel pickup truck. The pulley appears to be pressed onto the pump shaft. I suspect a piece of tire tread hit the pulley or excess stress caused by the blowout caused it to pop off the shaft. The result is an immediate loss of steering. I am interested in knowing if this has happened in other similar vehicles. Thank you, thomas huebner.

While driving over a set of railroad tracks, almost lost control of vehicle. Took it to Ford garage, they test drove it. Replace steering box. Two years later. Steering pump broke, and the new steering box broke, while driving. Vehicle is parked, and will remain parked. Drove the vehicle last week and experienced the same incident. Could not turn the steering wheel. Turned to the left, when I tried to turn to the right, it would not turn. Was driving at about 40mph. Went off the road. It continues to act the same. This would be a great vehicle to test.
- the contact has a 2003 Ford F-250 with 48950 miles, and power steering failed. The contact stated that it was very hard to turn the steering wheel. Although the power steering pump has been changed twice the failure continued. Speed was not a factor in the failure. The contact stated that he has the repair orders for the work that has been done. The power steeerig failed twice. Updated 01/30/07.

Dad*: the contact stated the steering wheel was tight and very difficult to turn either to the right or left. The dealership replaced two power steering pumps and the problem still persists. Updated 08/14/06.
Twice the power steering pump has failed (needing replacement both times) resulting in loss of power steering fluid and sudden loss of power assisted steering. First happened on April 9,2004 at 22,219 miles. Then again at 38,175 miles on Feb. 22,2006.
The contact stated there was severe vibration in the front suspension while driving at highway speeds. He took the vehicle to the dealer and the power steering pump was replaced. Afterwards, the problem recurred, and he took the vehicle back to the dealer. This time the dealer replaced the front and rear shocks. All repairs were covered by the warranty. There were no further problems.
: the consumer stated when depressing the brake pedal the vehicle lost all steering. The vehicle was taken to the dealership. The dealership ran diagnostics test on the vehicle; the problem was unable to be duplicated. The vehicle was driven for two months and the consumer was still experiencing the same problems with the steering. The vehicle was taken back to the dealership a second time, again the vehicle under went a diagnostics test. At this time the ball joints were replaced. After taken the vehicle from the dealership the vehicle was still losing all steering when applying the brake pedal. The third time the vehicle was taken back the dealership could not find anything wrong with the vehicle, while driving, the consumer lost steering power again.

I have a 2001 Ford f250 with the 7. 3 l engine. The problem with the vehical is that the power steering is unreliable. It works great 99% but occasionally it just goes dead. It seems that using the brakes and trying to turn the steering wheel will cause the steering to go dead such as in a parking lot where you are trying to turn the wheel and use the brakes to stop the car. The other day I was going up an on ramp with a turn at the top and had no steering to turn the truck. I almost had a wreck. The dealership seems aware of this problem. . . The fellas on the Ford truck web site have had their problems as well. It seems like this might be an issue for a possible recall.
While driving and making a left turn steering wheel was hard to turn. This caused the driver to apply both hands to turn the vehicle. Consumer drove the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic replaced the steering hydraulic power assist pump a month ago. However, problem recurred.
Turning locks when brakes applied at low speeds. Nearly impossible to park the vehicle because steering is impeded. Ps pump replaced twice without any correction. Believe problem lies in the fact that the ps pump serves as a brake assist pump and is not pumping sufficiently to operate both the brakes and the steering. Condition appears to be rampant as numerous complaints are noted on NHTSA's web page. Should be investigated, possible mfg. Defect.

Bearing failed on belt tensioner causing me to lose the serpentine belt which controls power steering, cooling, charging, and basically everything. Engine did overheat, but I was lucky enough to close to an exit in west virginia. After I talked to some people I found that at least 6 other people have had similar problems. I contacted Ford but they said that they have not heard of these problems. Total cost of repairs was 131. 00 which port city refunded me.
