1 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2018 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 03/11/2019

This vehicle is equipped with a feature that shuts the engine and ignition off after 30 minutes of idle without driver interaction. These vehicles have "up-fitter switches" which can be tied to things like auxiliary warning lights. When the vehicle shuts down, the headlights/tail lights turn off as well as power to any auxiliary loads. I am a firefighter in north carolina. I have these switches attached to auxiliary sae-w warning lights. The other night, I was on the scene of a collision and after 30 minutes, my truck shut itself off in the middle of the road and went completely dark. The headlights/tail lights turned off, as well as the warning lights installed on the perimeter of the body. This resulted in a significant traffic hazard and put the safety of myself and others in the roadway in jeopardy. The feature can be disabled each time the vehicle is started, but requires the vehicle to be stopped and various menus to be cycled through. I thought I'd kicked it off but apparently missed the setting while I was trying to get out and render aid at this particular incident. I have spoked with ronald fuller with Ford's body builder advisory service who informs me that this feature is included in all retail trucks, and can not be disabled. Their logic is that they want to prevent people from accidentally running the vehicle in their garage and asphyxiating themselves. The recommendation was to purchase a police package vehicle which does not include this software package. My concern is any vehicle used for construciton, road works, or for general commercial application is likely to experience a similar situation which can result in the vehicle being totally dark in the middle of the roadway.

3 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2011 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 07/12/2011

In a daylight safety zone requiring headlights, I noticed my dash lights were not on, even though my light switch was in the manual on position. This occurred during daytime while traveling through dense groves of trees that allowed enough light to see the road, but produced enough shade to darken my instrument panel. On entering a tunnel, my headlights showed to be on, but the instrument panel lights were not on, causing the instrument panel to be totally blacked out, and creating a potential hazardous condition. This occurred for nearly a half minute until the daylight sensor determined it was dark long enough to activate the dash lights. I brought the problem to the attention of two Ford dealers, who were unable to duplicate the problem with the truck in their shop. The third dealer I contacted was able to verify the problem I experienced; specifically, that while their tests showed all systems checked out okay, dash lights were inexplicably linked to the daylight sensor, regardless of whether the headlight switch was placed in park, on, or auto mode. If the truck was outside in the sun, park and on switch positions displayed the expected parking/headlight/tail light combination, but not the dash lights. Auto position worked as expected. On comparing trucks similar to mine, one with a computer module display and one without (as mine is) the dealer found that the display-equipped trucks dash lights came on as expected in daylight when the switch was on, but the truck equipped as mine, with do display, failed as mine does. Being stumped, both the dealer and I contacted Ford for further insight. To date, while the dealer is willing to pursue the issue to its satisfactory conclusion, Ford tells me that if the dealer cant locate a problem, none exists. I asked Ford to verify the problem with their engineers and determine why the two modules differ, with no success.

4 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2004 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 06/24/2011

The contact owns a 2004 Ford F-350. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer, who stated that the computer module would need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred the following day and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the computer module was replaced a second time but to no avail. The dealer then replaced the fuse box as but the repair did not prevent the failure from recurring. Additionally, the turn signals, daytime running lights and the tail lights had become inoperable. The contact called the manufacture in regard to NHTSA campaign id number: 11v352000 (exterior lighting) and was advised that the vehicle was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was 140,000.

5 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2005 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 08/28/2008

I rented a truck from u-haul in elk grove, CA at 4:50pm on 8/28/08. Once the vehicle was above 45mph it started to shake violently and once it was dark, the tail lights on the right side were shown to be non-functioning. The representative did not do a vehicle inspection with me, in fact, he took off before I even pulled out of the drive-way. I called the repair service because I felt the vehicle was unsafe and was told by the mechanic they sent out that the rear end was coming apart and that the power brake system had no power when I came to a complete stop. I informed u-haul and they insisted that I still drive the vehicle back to their facility. I refused, citing that it was unsafe and illegal to drive a vehicle without the working tail lights. They then charged my credit card for the rental and mileage even though the vehicle still sat in my drive-way without them knowing what that mileage would be.
