9 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2022 Ford F-450

Failure Date: 06/28/2024

I was towing my 5th wheel trailer on a highway and up an incline. Almost at the top of the hill a notification appeared on the dash screen stating, "low power mode". As I was on top of a hill, towing a trailer, on a highway, and with no available offramps, I coasted down the hill trying to find a place to pull off of the highway. At the bottom of the hill I heard a loud noise from the engine, noticed smoke in my rearview mirror, and lost all power to the vehicle including power steering. I managed to pull off to the side of the busy highway. I exited the vehicle and removed my kids from the car, moving them up a hill on the side of the highway as it was the safest place I could find. It was at that point I noticed flames coming from the right font front wheel well. I quickly opened my trailer, grabbed my fire extinguisher, and doused the flames. Had I not acted quickly the entire truck, trailer, and hillside would have caught fire. The vehicle is still at the dealership waiting on Ford motor company to approve the repairs. The vehicle has approximately 26,000 miles on it and is unmodified.

10 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2022 Ford F-450

Failure Date: 06/07/2024

On 6/7/24, while driving around the baltimore beltway towing a 44' RV in rush-hour traffic a battery warning light appeared. Within 1 min, the vehicle dashboard information went out and the engine stalled. I immediately put the vehicle in neutral and was able to coast to the shoulder without advantage of turn signals on either the RV or truck as a result. Once there I popped the hood and was able to get out to open it, however, there was a fire and my fingers were singed. After opening the hood, I noticed a full engine fire. I yelled for my wife to get out ASAP. I was able to extinguish the fire (thanks to the RV extinguisher), however, a secondary fire started, and a samaritan help extinguish that fire. A fire department truck appeared, and they cut the batter cable since it seemed to have started the fire. The vehicle was towed back to the dealership where it was purchased. The insurance agent stated a mechanic had informed him; they believe it was the battery that was the cause. All vehicle maintenance was conducted by the dealership due to warranty and an extended vehicle maintenance plan purchased at the time of sale. Ford has failed to acknowledge any problems with the vehicle and refused to honor the warranty.

11 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2017 Ford F-450

Failure Date: 05/17/2024

The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-450. The contact stated that the vehicle had been diagnosed with an oil leak coming from the injector seals. The vehicle was serviced by the dealer and the contact picked up the vehicle after it was serviced. While driving from the dealer at approximately 40 mph, the contact noticed white-grayish smoke coming from the passenger side of the vehicle. The contact immediately pulled over as black smoke began to emit from the vehicle vents as all occupants exited the vehicle. The vehicle quickly became engulfed in flames and the authorities were called to the scene. The fire was extinguished by the fire department. A fire report was filed. The contact, his wife and daughter all experienced mental trauma as a result of the fire; no medical attention was given. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was later taken into possession by the contact's insurance company. The dealer was notified of the failure and denied any responsibility for the fire. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and a case was filed; the contact was then referred to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The vehicle was destroyed as a result of the fire. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000. The contact did not attempt to file a complaint online.

15 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2020 Ford F-450

Failure Date: 06/17/2022

Sudden acceleration while braking. While towing a gooseneck trailer aprox. 25,000 lbs, with the truck in tow/haul mode and the exhaust/engine brake turned on, started down a long winding 8% grade, could feel the engine brake working as normal, holding the truck from gaining speed, as the truck entered the second turn, the truck lunged forward gaining a lot of speed causing me to quickly stab the brakes, the truck continued this type of on/off cycle with quickly acclerating while standing on the brakes to try and control it until I leaned over and swithched the engine brake off, making it necassary to ride the brakes down the grade to maintain a safe speed and not lose control. By the time we reached the bottom, smoke was coming from both the truck and trailer brakes and the stopping power was nearly gone. The truck has done this intermittently without warning and is a major concern for safety. A search on truck forums show a number of people with the same concern. Dealer has been able to reproduce the problem, but does not have a solution. I beleive its a defect in the new 10 speed transmission and tied to the ongoing vibration / shake / hop / bounce we are experiancing.

When traveling down the hiway, sometimes you will lose power. You will feel a jerk. The engine is still running but no power to the wheels. Pretty scary when you are trying to pass a vehicle on the interstate. You try to pull over to the side of the road. You have no means of movement. You can now turn off the vehicle and put it in neutral and restart the engine, you can now continue down the hiway until it happens again. This has happened multiple times. We have driven with our horse trailer down to arizona 3 times and this has happened 3-4 times each way. Ford dealer where purchased has no clue what is causing this. This vehicle was purchased brand new. We have had this problem since new.

25 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2015 Ford F-450

Failure Date: 01/06/2016

While driving at various speeds receive low fuel pressure / reduced engine power warning. Truck enters "limp home home" almost immediately. Reduced power at highway speed puts driver/passengers in harm as one can't maintain sufficient speed to safely exit the highway. Ford was unable to determine root cause on four occasions. On final occurrence dealer states Ford corporate wants to dismantle fuel system to determine if fuel contamination is present. Further states if contamination is found repair and dismantle are outside of warranty and owners responsibility. Issue began with 10k miles on the vehicle final incident occurred at 18k miles. Traded for another brand out of concern for personal safety. Fords lack of concern and blatant attempt to pass the blame to consumers and fuel suppliers has lost them a customer for life.

26 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2008 Ford F-450

Failure Date: 06/18/2015

I was making a left hand turn afyer stoping at a traffic light and loss power. The engine light came on and the turbo pressure gauge dropped. I took the truck into the dealer and the dealer told me that a manafold bolt had broken which caused a bad exhuast leak. Repair cost was $3500. I drove the truck less than 50 miles over the next two days and the problem happened again with loss of power and engine light on. I took the truck back the dealer and was informed that the high pressure fuel pump had exploded and sent metal debris through out the fuel system. I was then told the repair cost were going to $7500 ($6000 for parts and $1500 for labor). This is a bad Ford engineering design problem and should be paid for by Ford as well as a recall on all models using the same hpfp assembly.

27 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Ford F-450

Failure Date: 06/28/2014

Engine logo light came on; then red sign came on " stop safely now". I pulled to the shoulder and the engine stopped. I waited 30 minutes or so and the engine started again. I drove starting and stopping to a Ford dealer in clarion, PA. Slept in the truck all night and the next morning shawn ran the computer and his conclusion was the number 8 cylinder injector was bad and that causes the heat sensors to malfunction. He didn't have the part but suggested running it until it cuts out, let it cool then run it again. Well after about 70 miles it stopped for good. I then called up montross Ford, and they had the injector so I bought it thinking next I'll find the mechanic, on a Saturday afternoon I was wrong. Next I looked up recalls and I found a recall for faulty heat sensors, that recall was for the same time period as my truck was made. I am now sitting on the side of rt. 76 with no where to go pulling a 4 car trailer, customers upset and my last hope is Ford motor CO.

28 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2008 Ford F-450

Failure Date: 01/05/2014

Vehicle lost complete power while driving on interstate at cruising speed. There were absolutely no warnings, the engine just quit, disabling the vehicle in high speed traffic. The dealer repair was to replace wiring harness for high pressure fuel pump due to wires shorting the engine after the insulation was chafed by internal contact with other engine parts, which was a known issue with this engine for builds prior to August 20, 2007, according to a Ford TSB: 07-26-2. This part is completely internal and not subject to inspection until failure. My family and I were extremely fortunate that we were able to get safely to the shoulder of the interstate with many semi's and cars around us when the failure occurred. Also, since engine wouldn't start at all, we were subjected to extreme cold weather conditions while waiting for tow vehicle, over 2 hours. This is a potential life-threatening defect!! losing all power in seconds without warning in high-speed traffic is unacceptable, Ford!.

29 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Ford F-450

Failure Date: 11/01/2012

Vehicle looses power, no acceleration, occurs most frequently under heavy load or high acceleration demand, told by Ford dealer the problem is caused by DE-laminating fuel tank resulting in fuel tank coating entering the fuel system and obstructing diesel fuel flow to motor when high demand for duel occurs. Near collision at freeway speeds and was very dangerous to pull over when there was no shoulder. Ford dealer states the cost to repair is over $3,500. 00 and open ended depending on whether the fuel tank coating entered the motor or injectors. They want to start by replacing the harness, fuel tank and fuel pump and go from there. Ford refuses to honor this clear manufacturing defect.

35 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Ford F-450

Failure Date: 10/02/2009

2004 Ford F-450 had rotting oil pan. It was determined by Ford that the cause was from "environmental issues. " vehicle was only used on-road at all times and there was no reason after four years that the oil pan should have rotted out because of "environmental issues. " we are located in connecticut, nowhere near salt water. It cost our company $1,500 to replace the pan and related items. We did have a three-year extended warranty on the vehicle; however, we feel an oil pan should not "rot" after four years of normal wear and tear on the vehicle.
