38 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 10/22/2012

In August 2010, I had the continuously variable transmission replaced at ~98,000 miles. Luckily, it was under warranty. Now in October 2012, the second transmission as the service member said at the Ford dealership "the transmission exploded, we're not even sure how you were able to drive this vehicle. This was at ~146,000 miles, but there is only ~48,000 miles on the transmission itself. Two transmissions have failed in this vehicle. Searching the internet I have come across several instances of the Ford Five Hundreds continuously variable transmission failing. I called the Ford care line to report it, but they claim they are unaware of any issues. My concern is this third transmission will also fail at some point.

39 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 10/13/2012

My car surges. It is mostly at idle speed. It's dangerous. I was at a drive through and a janitor was sweeping. My car surged and I literally stood on the breaks to prevent running over him. At the drive through it surged forward and I had to stand on the breaks to prevent it from ramming into the car ahead. It occurs more when air conditioning is running but will occur without ac on. I the local dealer replaced the throttle body recently but it still surges. It occurs when pulling to a stop at the lights or at the drive through as you slowly move forward. It happens when pulling into a parking spot or when backing up. I've seen news about the problem with the Ford escape. My Ford 500 is also affected and weighs a whole lot more. If this thing surges forward it could do some serious damage.

40 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 09/14/2012

Vehicle lurches or jumps when shifted into gear. The brakes need to be held down firmly otherwise the car has a chance to smash into anything that may be in front or behind you when shifting into drive or reverse. Have come close to hitting pedestrians and stopped vehicles at stop signs and traffic lights. This condition seems to be getting worse and Ford doesn't seem to be doing anything about it. Have seen numerous complaints on line saying the same thing. Should someone be killed or an accident occur before this problem is addressed? I hope not.

41 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 08/08/2012

On hot summer days and only on hot summer days when stopped at light or stopped period car begins to surge forward while holding brake. Went asked Ford why is this happening they said they don't know. That I should get the throttle body and mass air flow sensor serviced if not done already. I guess it had to be done at 90k but I did not know. Well I did what they said, went home and car is now idling rough went back and they want to charge me another $90 dollars ontop of the $105 they have already charged me for the throttle and mafs. I have almost gotten in numerous accidents because of this but Ford doesn't want to acknowledge that this is a problem with this car.

42 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 08/03/2012

Car accelerates when air conditioning is on (more so when turning wheel) whether in drive or reverse. Already had accident in reverse. Noted several complains about this from owners on google. Almost had another accident in jack in the box drive thru where car accelerated unexpectedly. Missed car in front of me by inches. Had foot on brake, car was in drive but not moving when this happen. Acceleration over powered brake pressure. Very, very scary. Please help. Otherwise love car. Please contact my cousin. See below.

43 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 08/02/2012

The car lunges forward or backwards when shifting gears also lunges when coming to a stop very violently. I drive with plenty of space in font of me so I haven't hit anything I'm surprised no one else has either.

44 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

When after starting car and gear shift put into either drive or reverse the engine will surge causing car to lunge. If not aware of issue and have foot on brake would hit what ever in the way of car. The same thing happens when pulling into or out of parking space. I had my car fixed at a Ford dealer and then contacted Ford motor about the problem and they don't seem to take the issue seriously. According to my Ford dealer the problem is in the throttle body. I went out on the internet and found other Ford 500 owners reporting the same thing. The big problem is that it doesn't happen all of the time. The main reason for this compliant is that Ford doesn't want to acknowledge they have a problem.

45 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 07/31/2012

I have a 2006 Ford Five Hundred. I purchased it used in Jan 2012. My car continually lurches forward while sitting still. The air conditioner will not cool while idling if it is hot outside. I have also had issues with losing all power while driving down the freeway. I will be driving and all gauges will bottom out and then rev up to the highest. My rpms will drop down, the gas gauge will go to empty and at night all electrical lights and dashboard notifications will light up and then go off. I cannot use the air conditioner, radio or anything else when this happens. This is very dangerous and I believe Ford should be held accountable for not fixing this issue sooner! someone is going to get into a fatal accident because of this issue!!! losing all power and speed and then having the vehicle lurch forward is dangerous! #scaredmomof3babies!.

46 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 07/26/2012

So here I am another victim of a faulty throttle body. Thanks Ford I love when my car takes off on me without notice, especially when you have kids in the car. How many of these do I have to read before action is taken. Does it take a death or serious accident. Cost me 718 dollars I expect a recall soon and my money back I will not quit until this is taken care of. It's sad when you go to a mechanic and they say "wow there is still not a recall on this". Oh by the way it is such a common problem I diagnosed my own car issue in 5 minutes by using google and typing failsafe engine mode.

47 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 07/24/2012

We were driving down a highway and went to get back to speed after passing through a speed zone. I noticed a decrease in power and looked at the information screen. The fail safe mode and the "wrench" icon was on. I pulled the car over and turned it off. I then turned it on and the car acted normal. It has happened twice since the first incident. My wife took it to the dealership and Ford cannot duplicate the problem and the issue does not throw a check engine code or leaves any type of electronic history of the issue. I cannot allow my wife to drive this car because she is seven month pregnant and cannot have her drive it if the car breaks down due to this issue.

48 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 07/15/2012

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Five Hundred. While driving 60 mph, the vehicle failed to accelerate and the power train wrench icon illuminated. The contact was able to shut off and restart the vehicle in order to operate normally. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the electronic throttle body sensor failed, sending the vehicle into "limp mode", and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted on several occasions. The contact mentioned that the electronic throttle body sensor was replaced twice. The vehicle recently went into "limp mode" again. The dealer performed a diagnostic test, but a failure code could not be found. The vehicle was also test driven, but the failure was not duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 90,000.

49 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 07/01/2012

During warm weather with the a/c operating, the rpms surge and the vehicle lunges in the direction of the transmission lever selection (forward or reverse) when moving the shift lever from park to drive or from park to reverse with driver's foot on the brake. Engine rpms surge up to approx. 1,500 from idle at a dead stop without input from accelerator pedal. Different indicator lights come on and often the engine dies after the surge. If driver does not keep appropriate pressure on break pedal while shifting from park, the vehicle will accelerate without input from gas pedal. This surge also happens when decelerating to a stop. Vehicle slows down and rpms decrease to approx 600 (idle), and with pressure applied to brake pedal, engine rpms will increase, without input from accelerator pedal, forcing the driver to increase pressure on brake pedal or risk uncontrolled forward movement. Initial reports indicate a faulty throttle body as referenced in NHTSA investigation # pe110818.

50 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 06/16/2012

Throttle body malfunction. Engine reves up while placing the car in drive or reverse without touching the gas pedal, up to 1. 5 on the rpm's on the speedometer. This is very scary, a child crossed in front of me while I was waiting at a stop sign. Foot was on the brake but all of a sudden it just reved up. It lunged forward and I hd to really put that break on. Scared me and the child to. I bought the car new and had all service done from the Ford dealer in the service person there told my husband that this part "throttle body" was made by the same manufacturer that made the Toyota parts that went bad "sticking gas pedals" ? and that Toyota recalled this dangerous issue and fixed it. Unless my husband misunderstood this gentleman, which I don't think he did. I spoke to Ford and placed a complaint and they told me that there had been complaints, but there was no recall issued as yet, but hold onto my receipt in case there is a recall issued in the future. This will cost $850. 00, "which I feel should be picked up by Ford". Pressing normally on the breaks is not good enough, you have to almost put it to the floor so that you do not move and pray that it doesn't lunge forward in the transition from break to gas pedal. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

51 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 06/13/2012

When car was placed in gear throttle surged causing car to jump while foot still on the brake. , also surges when pulling slowly into parking place.

52 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 06/12/2012

The vehicle has unintended acceleration issues. There was an investigation by the nhsta but nothing came of it. The car still accelerates on its own when I pull into parking spaces or leaving parking spaces. I have to keep my foot on or by the brake pedal as to not hit other cars or people. Having the air conditioning on seems to worsen this problem substantially. It is completely random and I know I'm not the only person that has experienced this issue. Please reopen your investigation and make sure you have both the ac on and off. It's mainly when it is on, but still completely random. I don't know how people and property haven't been injured or damaged as a direct result of this well known issue.

53 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 06/08/2012

I was approaching a red light and as I lifted my foot off the brake pedal. . . . . . . . . . . . . . The car accelerated abruptly and I was unable to stop causing me to pass red light, almost striking an oncoming vehicle that was making a left hand turn and driving onto sidewalk. Fortunately no one was hurt and an accident was avoided due to my quick response. The vehicle has accelerated abruptly on several other occasions. I was parked in a publics parking lot when I put my vehicle in reverse the vehicle once again accelerated almost hitting parked vehicle behind me. I was advised the throttle sensor was defective on 2005 & 2006 Ford Five Hundred models and no recall yet! this defect causes vehicle to accelerate abruptly (even when parked) or not accelerate at all! there have been many reports regarding this issue and nothing has been done about it. When a life is lost or someone is severely injured. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Is that when some action will be taken? according to reports even if the part gets replaced it does not guarantee it will not go bad again. Repairs have been known to cost between $450. 00 to $750. 00.

54 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

While parking, with foot on brake the car surged forward. The a/c was on as well. It has now happened 7 more times all while the a/c is on either parking or reversing from a parking spot.

55 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 05/15/2012

The car had begun surging hard both in reverse and forward. It happens when stopping and when first putting it in gear. I've been fortunate to have not hit anything yet, but I am fearful that it might happen. I'm seeing a lot of other people having the exact same problem in several forums and websites. I do not understand why a recall has not been issued for this problem as it is obviously a serious manufacturer's defect.

56 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 05/02/2012

The electronic throttle body is bad in majority of vehicles in my class year. This costly repair causes the vehicle to lunge forward while in drive and lunge backwards while in reverse. It is worst when the ac is on,,it causes the vehicle to idle high and low to the point of almost shutting off the vehicle in traffic.

57 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 04/09/2012

The car periodically lurched and surged. Finally, it would not start. The dealer determined that the electronic throttle body was defective. Based on information from the dealer and from this website, it appears that this is a common problem on certain Ford models. If this problem is as wide-spread as it appears, there should be a recall.

58 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 04/06/2012

Being stopped at an atm, my car began to smoke. Pulled over into the bank parking lot to see if it was over heating. The white smoke would not subside and began getting worse. Dialed 911 and a firetruck came out opened the hood and extinguished a fire under the hood. Prior to the truck arriving, a loud bang occurred under the hood.

59 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 04/03/2012

When you are driving the vehicle will stop accelerating and a fail safety mode light comes on, if you pull over and restart it, it will restart and happens a few minutes later.

60 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 03/07/2012

Since 2007 the car intermittently will periodically lung forward and it is almost impossible to control the car. This has happened several times since June 2007 (88,000 miles). Even hard braking does not necessarily stop the car. . . I have had to put the car in neutral the engine revs up as if I am touching the accelerator (and my foot is not on the pedal) and I shut the car off. Turning the car back on does not necessarily remedy the problem. In addition, the car routinely goes into fail safe engine mode or cuts off while I am driving at a reasonable rate of speed both on rural roads and highways. This car is a hazard to drive, more so in the warmer months. . . My thought is something must get overheated but what I do not know.

61 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

I put my car in reverse to back into a parking space and the car engine accelerate as if it I was on the gas pedal going 50, except I was on the brake. If I am sitting at a red light the car engine accelerate I noticed that the rpm needle will go up to 3 sometime 4 if I am not careful to keep control of the car it will take off so I have to be careful to keep my foot on the brakes.

62 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 02/22/2012

While driving the car rpm gauge was moving upward even though I was still at steady speed. When I slowed and stopped it appeared to continue to lunge forward. I was able to control since I had some distance from the vehicle in front of me. By the time I reached my destination I was afraid that it had a mind of its own. It settled when I tried to park for it then cut off. There have been numerous events when the car lunged forward or cut off while driving and even when I put the car in reverse. I had three (3) motor mounts replaced and new battery along with the safety sensor. It costs more to repair than general maintenance. I see why they stopped making this car. Its dangerous! I am now in the process of getting the throttle body replaced which may not be under warranty. This car should be recalled or we should be compensated for repairs related to this problem.

63 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 01/09/2012

The car sudden surges forward or back when moving out of park. If your foot is not firmly on the brake it will go move significantly. Upon research online and talking to Ford directly this is known problem that is not under re-call yet but should be. Our local Ford dealer carries the throttle bottle in stock because they sell so many of them. They average 10 a year. A simple research of the problem shows up. It is extremely dangerous. Also if there is quick stop it will go to a fail safe mode and basically shut off the car completely. The car has to be shut off and restarted in order to move the vehicle again. The throttle bottle must be replaced in order for it to be safe as a parts cost of almost $600. 00.

64 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 12/14/2011

At a stoplight with the brake on the engine revved up and the car jumped forward about 20 feet before I could stop it. At the next light the same thing happened. At my final destination approximately 2 miles away my son (who was with me the whole time = I was taking him back to college) told me to let the car run to see if it would do it again. With the car in drive and my foot on the brake (hard) it revved up 2 more times in less than 2 minutes to at least 1500 rpm and was very difficult to hold back. I took it in to the dealer the next day and they replaced the throttle body at a cost of $800. After calling Ford and reporting the situation they refused to document this or make a case number until I told them I knew there was a technical bulletin on this according to the dealer. They gave me a case number 1401813351 but were rude to me and could not answer if the replacement part addressed the issue and has been fixed. I do not know if it will happen in the next mile, next 100,000 miles, or never again if they will not say if replacement parts have corrected a problem. If a car or pedestrian were in front of me when this happened I would have had an accident without doubt. This car has a safety problem and the incident happened on Nov. 27, 2011.

65 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 11/14/2011

Cars enters into failsafe mode and engine cuts out. I have been almost rear- ended three times since first occurrence and one time almost t-boned. Sluggish acceleration when taking off may occur also. I have noticed this has been a common problem with this model and the faulty throttle body has since been redesigned by Ford. They should recall this as it is a safety hazard. I know that I was lucky to have not been injured in an accident due to this faulty part, but I am sure some have not been so lucky.

66 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 11/13/2011

Lately my 2006 Ford 500 has been acting up when I start it. . . Some days it starts just fine, other days it won't start. It doesn't matter the temperature outside either, it may start in the morning & then when it's time to head home after work it won't start or vice versa. The days it won't start the only way I've found to get it to start (without jumping it) is to turn & hold the ignition key all the way down when I'm starting it & give it gas. Took it to the dealer this morning (11/23/11) to find out the problem. We were thinking possibly the starter was needing replaced. . . We were wrong. The problem is that the throttle body isn't working properly & needs replaced. . . As well as doing an induction service to flush out the carbon build up. This is going to cost almost $1,000 to fix. Are you kidding me?? merry christmas to us!! after receiving the call from the dealer's service dept we did a search online & come to find out that this "throttle body problem" is common in this car. Though when we brought it to the service person's attention & questioned them about it they couldn't/wouldn't answer if this was true. Not sure but maybe there hasn't been enough problems reported to have a recall. . . But with all the same issues that I've found online it makes me wonder. We've already replaced the transmission maybe 2 years after we bought the car. . Thankfully that was still under warranty. What else can go wrong with this car!! we have been faithful Ford car buyers. . However this 500 has turned us off from ever buying another Ford vehicle again.

67 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 11/07/2011

Cruising approx 65 mph. I heard a thud (like running over a pot hole). The car lurched fwd then seemed to shut off, however it was still running. The rpm dropped below 1000 and the throttle would not work. Placed car in neutral and moved to the side of the road. Noticed the wrench lite was illuminated. Turned the car off and restarted. The car seemed to drive fine after that with no lite. Took the car to have the codes checked. Two codes showed: trottle stuck closed and the throttle forced to idle (apparently a safety feature). Two days ago had to have the pcm and tcm updated and replaced the upper motor mount. From previous complaints there are several with the car taking off and a few of with my issue. All seemed to be attributed to the throttle body malfunctioning which is apparently the case here. Given the amount of complaints and issues concerning this item, surely there is a recall required. At the very least the manufacture should give us what we paid for the vehicle as credit toward another car (any make and model) if they are no going to fix the problem.

68 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 11/01/2011

The car will surge when you put it in gear. Does it in drive and reverse. I have to keep my foot on the brake until I am away from a car or building as it will jump into them. I never know when its going to do it. I estimated when it started and is still doing it.

69 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 10/19/2011

Ford 500 lurches severely at random times while the engine is engaged. This happens most dangerously at high speeds, due to driver's inability to control vehicle adequately to defend against potential crashes or control speed during turns. This has caused problems on the snow and ice here in alaska because uncontrolled acceleration reduces traction. Also occurs at low speeds, which is more easily controlled through braking, but requires extreme caution if engaging vehicle when pedestrians or other vehicles are near. It has surprised and scared me on many occasions since I first purchased this car a month ago, but the reason I am writing this is because I had a scary incident today when pulling out of a grocery store parking lot (pedestrians in front of me when it suddenly jumped as soon as engine engaged). Took it to the mechanic and diagnostic check says issues with fuel delivery system. The mechanic stated that after researching the issue this is a very common problem for this model and that it is most likely the throttle body, and says the car should not be driven in its condition. It is one of the scariest issues I've ever had to deal with. After reading more about it on the internet this evening it seems that this issue is very common and hundreds of people have had similar scary incidents with this car that they have reported online. If this many people are writing about it online, presumably there are thousands more who are having the same problem and do not have the resources or know how to report the issue.

70 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

I would be stopped at a stop sign or red light and would push on the throttle to accelerate. The guy would not move at first then would "jump" and accelerate quickly. I never hit anyone because I was careful, but I took it into a Ford dealership to have them diagnose it. They claimed to know of the problem but would not cover it under warranty. I paid over $1,000 to have them replace my "throttle body. ".
