Leaky fuel tank. Strong smell of leaky fuel. Worried that vehicle might catch fire. Took it into my local oil change place and they could not find leak. I can see a puddle of fuel on my driveway - about 2-3 feet round. Believe fuel tank has corroded. But I am told the tank is made of plastic. Looked up 2 other NHTSA complaints with similar failure complaints. Vehicle has 152,000 miles.

When the vehicle gets to the half tank mark, it goes to empty and shuts off shortly after. When refueling, it only fills maybe 5-10 gallons max before overflowing. It has almost stranded us multiple times.

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Flex. While driving 30 mph on the highway, the vehicle lost power. The contact was able to pull the vehicle over to the side of the road. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle and had it towed back to her home. The contact attempted to fill up the fuel tank and noticed fuel leaking underneath the vehicle. The fuel inlet warning indicator illuminated when the contact attempted to restart the vehicle on the side of the highway. Ron carter Ford (8837 3005, fm 528 rd, alvin, TX 77511, (281) 715-7318) was contacted and stated that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The contact just bought the vehicle used three months ago. The manufacturer also stated that there was no recall. The failure mileage was 93,000.

Driving down the road and out of nowhere my vehicle started stalling as if vehicle had no gas. Gas tank was full and vehicle showed me a wrench sign as I was looking at my dashboard.
As has been reported many time on here and in the Flex forums, the vehicle will suddenly stall at a 1/4 tank of gas for no reason. I was traveling down the interstate at high way speed when the fuel gauge dropped to e and the miles to empty read 0. This has happened three times. I called one of my local dealers who insisted they have never heard of this problem and nothing was done. There advice was to not let the car get to a 1/4 of a tank. They have no fix for this dangerous problem.

Gas tank leaks at the seam.
Fuel gauge reading drops suddenly from 1/4 tank to empty in a matter of seconds, not allowing time to get out of traffic. Happened numerous times but so far only when the vehicle has been in a position to pull off the road (on single lane roadway, or in the right hand lane. Has beed at highway speeds, and on residential area.
Our car has stalled on us 4 times, all while in traffic. 1st time at night on a residental street moving forward, 2nd and 3rd time while on a 40 mph road in heavy traffic, 4th time while going through an intersection on a main road moving forward. Each time vehicle has had a 1/2 tank or more of gas. Vehicle acts as though it has ran out of gas. Light on the dash comes on with a wrench symbol saying to check manual. Vehicle has been brought into westlie Ford in washougal, wa 2 times with no resolution. The computer is showing no issue, so nothing has been repaired. Vehicle is unsafe to drive, as this could potentially cause an accident. Had we been on a freeway I have no doubts it would have. Vehicle only has approximately 9800k miles on it and we haven't even owned it a year. I rely heavily on my vehicle, and have had to put out several hundred dollars so far on a rental car.

Fuel level will suddenly drop from 1/4 tank to empty within a matter of seconds. The display will show approximately 65 miles to empty, less than a minute later it will display give a low fuel error and the vehicle will shut off while driving. Sometimes you can wait 20 minutes , turn the key on and it will again show 1/4 tank of fuel. Whether or not it then displays 1/4 tank of fuel, if you take the vehicle to a gas station to fill up it will only accept 12-14 gallons. The vehicle has an 18 gallon fuel tank. It appears as though the vehicle thinks it suddenly running out of fuel despite there being another 4-6 gallons of fuel in the tank.
Fuel gauge will only register 1/2 full max. When tank is full and key turned on the gauge will initially go to full, then quickly fall to 1/2 with a corresponding distance to empty reading.

Engine stalls despite fuel gauge reading 1/4 tank in reserve. Fill up confirms that there is in fact 1/4 tank left. Has happened several times now.
I was entering at carpool lanes when a debris hit the underbody of the vehicle, I just heard a big hit underbody and continue driving after two miles another driver notice fluids were draining from the bottom of the vehicle and urge me to check when I stopped I find out the debris had make a heavy damage to the gas tank and gasoline was in efect draining fast. I stopped and turn off the engine and a friend of mine help me take the damage vehicle to my house where the the rest of the gasoline drain out. I put sand into the drain gasoline and try to catch the more I could into a small bucket, I was afraid the car could catch fire so I put under a shadow the temperature was 97 frth neither the gas gauge started marking it was getting emptier or a check engine light show up at the dash board.
Gas gauge will read between 14 to 1/2 tank of fuel then without warning drops to e and car dies. Faulty fuel sensor or pump due to saddlebag tank design. Also no cutout in floorboard to access the secondary sensor or pump. There is still about 4 or 5 gallons of fuel in the tank but the car thinks it is empty.
Car said '15 miles to empty' and gauge needle was just below a quarter, then needle dropped to empty and computer estimate went down to '3 miles to empty' within a mile. . Then shut down and limped off road. Left me stranded on the side of a busy city freeway in a very dangerous location, until I could get someone to bring gas to refuel. Repeated this the next time the gas was down to a quarter tank. I watched it carefully and saw it recalculate from approx 15 to empty, to 0 in less than 4 miles. Got to a gas station in time before the car shut off. Now I fill it up at 50 miles until empty to avoid running into this issue. . Read more...
The issue that has recently cropped up on our Flex is the fuel meter will read sufficient fuel for approximately 50 miles and then, in a matter of miles, the tank seems to run dry/indicate no miles left. On this particular date I was driving the car it indicated 49 miles to empty. After 3 miles it ran out of gas. Fortunately I was on a side street and not the highway. This behavior could have been fatal if I was operating on a highway. I am not the only one having this issue. Please see Fordflex. . Read more...
Vehicle does not recognize last quarter tank of fuel. Once it reaches approximately a quarter tank left, the fuel gauge and miles to empty display drop suddenly to empty and the car shuts off. When refueling after it shows empty, it only accepts about 3/4 tank. The fuel is there, but inaccessible. This is a major safety issue as the car dies very suddenly when the system decides there's no fuel left. It has happened on the interstate, other highways, and on a rural road where finding enough fuel to get going again was a big problem. Dealership replaced fuel sensors, but said there was no code showing while the car was still under warranty. Now I'm stuck randomly replacing fuel system pieces in hopes of figuring out which piece is broken. Each time I spend hundreds of dollars to "fix" it, the problem repeats as soon as I get through most of the first tank of fuel. Position of vehicle doesn't matter. Uphill, downhill, etc, it always happens close to a quarter tank of fuel left.
The contact owns a 2010 Ford Flex. The contact attempted to fill the fuel tank when he overflow valve failed. The contact also mentioned that sporadically, the valve would not allow the fuel tank to be filled to capacity and when attemtping to fill the tank, it would often take approximatley 30 minutes to fill. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the technician stated that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 66,000.
This is a huge safety issue we have run out of gas on the freeway two times the gauge will say 70 miles to empty and 30 seconds later goes to zero the car runs out if gas in the car shut down on the freeway with my children in the car I have also run out of gas on the street I took it and pay $200 to a mechanic who is not able to fix it the Ford dealer said they can't figure out what's wrong with it but recommended a $700 fuel sending unit howeverthey were unsure if this would fix the problem this is a major safety issue a time hassle and very stressful on a four-year-old car that I've taken very good care of. When this happens and I go to fill up the tank the gas tank isn't actually empty even though it says it is and the car shuts down.
