Steering and hill assist light came on when warming up the car. Went to leave the parking spot and the car was extremely hard to turn in both directions. Shutting the car off and re starting temporarily resolved the issue for a few days at first! but it came back and did the same thing. This occurred again while driving on highway 200 @80mph causing me to almost leave my lane and hit a Mini van! the car has been parked for about 4 months now and only used for very short trips in town (1 mile or less!) this is a well known and documented issue that Ford is refusing to issue a recall for! just another corporation not caring about their consumers! issue a recall already! ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly #vpic#.

When I went to leave my parking spot, I had zero power steering and a warning light on the dash. No warning, it was fine when I parked it 4 hours earlier. Now, the dealer says I need an entire new rack and pinion totaling $1,560 with labor. Why is this not a recall with all of these complaints? could this also cause the terrible vibration in this car I've felt since we bought in April? I've had it back to the dealer 3 times and they can't find it when they test drive.
My wife and I were driving and had fortunately just pulled over avoiding an accident when the steering wheel assist light came on locking up the steering and making it extremely hard to steer the vehicle. We got it over to quick lane ( a Ford affiliated service center by our home and as you can see by the documentation analyzed the problem and had to replace the electronic steering rack and reprogram the module. This cost us $2530. 24. I have read on the internet and as you are aware there are many complaints related to this issue. We were surprised there was no recall relate to this, and if there is I wasn't aware of or made aware of it.

The electronic power steering failure light keeps coming on. Ford recalled other units for same problem and not the Focus. Steering wheel locks up when light comes on and makes it difficult to steer. This is a major accident waiting to happen. The light usually comes on when first starting the car.

Car was in park. When I turned on the ignition and started to back out I couldn't turn the steering wheel and the power steering warning light came on. I put the car back in park, turned it off then back on after a couple of minutes and it was fine. This has happened at least 4 times within the past year.
The power steering assist malfunction light went on and power steering failed three times on my Ford Focus 2012. When I restarted the car, the malfunction light went away and power steering returned. Each time the vehicle was in a stationary position. The dealership service department said the rack and pinion module needed to be replaced. Thank goodness my vehicle was not in motion or serious injury or death could have occurred. The vehicle has less than 35,000 miles on it and there is no reason why this significant of a repair is necessary on a vehicle with so little mileage on it. This is clearly a manufacturer defect problem and not a wear and tear issue. Ford was not willing to assist in any way unless this part is subject to a recall.
Power steering fault has been coming on and off for several months. An engine restart normally resets light. On October 23, 2018, the power steering light came on while in motion and completely disable my ability to control the car. The vehicle is now park and cannot be driven.

While driving through a parking lot and attempting to turn left across an intersection, the power steering went out completely, jerked the wheel out of my hand, and kept the car moving straight forward. I narrowly missed hitting another car as my husband helped me tug on the wheel to get the car out of the intersection and to the side of the road. The power assist light was on. I turned the car off and back on, and the problem went away. This is the second time that this problem has happened, and I am afraid of it happening on the highway or in traffic and causing an accident.
Power steering module had to be replaced. Dtc u3000:49-48 was the code from the dealer. The steering assit light came on after starting the car.

Started car put in drive the steering light came on and had no power steering drove out of drive still no power steering drove about 2 miles still no power steering stop put in park stop engine waited about 15 seconds started car light out and the had power steering . Talked to shop foreman at crouse Ford told me they have not seen any problems with the Focus but what I described say it is the electric power steering rack and pinion.
On 12/8/2017 I drove me car downtown nashville from my house. Parked it in the gultch area. Walked to a return. Came back to my car and the steering assist fault light came on. It said contact dealer. I tried turning the car off and on again several times. The steering wheel would turn with great effort, however I was parallel parked and there was no way I was getting the car out of the position it was in without needing a tow truck. So I had to have it towed to the Ford dealership. Once there it took them 5 days to tell hook it up to the computer and tell me that I needed almost $2,300 worth of repairs. So basically while the car was parked, it broke. I declined service at the moment and am actively searching for solutions. The dealer diagnostic was as follows: "found u3000-49 pscm internal failure. Followed pinpoint test b and found needs rack replacement. " the car was purchased in Jan 2013 from a car max. I payed for the extended warranty that they sold me as 100,000 mies "over the purchase milage", to which they have been kind enough to inform me actually meant 100,000 miles total. I'm right at the 113,500 neighborhood. I have exactly two payments left. So now not only do I have to borrow or rent a car ($$$) I will loose money if I trade it in, I have to burden someone else with the use of my car to work. Which has affected my ability to earn a living and pay my bills. Top that off with the service charge of and extra $2,300 out of pocket. Ford, we need to talk.
Nov 27, 2017. Got in my car after work and steering assist light came on. Put hands on steering wheel and I had no power steering. Called a mechanic he said it would be $1800 to fix it. Same thing has happened to five other people he knows.
Steering assist fault light came on periodically over past 5 thousand miles, mentioned during last visit. Now it came on and won't clear. Have read of many people with 2012 Fords with this issue. This is second problem with car, have also had clutch replaced twice.
The power steering to the vehicle just went out while I was driving. I was able to make it home but have been unable to get it repaired due to wait time. During this time I struck an object in the road that was a dead deer because I could not maneuver to avoid hitting the deer. I was driving the vehicle on the highway at the time. The power steering assist light came on after it went out.
Was beginning to get steering fault warning lights back in little over a year ago. It would correct and wouldn't come on till later in time. Probably had 6-8 occurrences. About two weeks ago I had no steering at all. Took it to my local mechanic and they said the electronic assist has failed and the entire rack & pinion needed replace. The complaints are similar especially with in the last year. Attention needs to be given to this since even other Ford cars are having the same problem and being recalled. I called Ford and they said there is no recall or necessarily the same problems that I have with my car. They said I would have to take it to a Ford dealer to have it 'properly diagnose' to determine if 'my' issue correlates with the common ones out there. That also will cost me money for diagnostic. If they read all the complaints on the NHTSA they will see it is common. My mechanic tells me it is going to coat me $1900 to replace. The part at Ford alone is $1200. We shouldn't wait till someone gets hurt to see the obvious that it is a problem. I noticed 3 more complaints for the same problem since I have checked it at the NHTSA a couple of days ago. Ford, consider the consequences if this isn't properly addressed.
I was driving to work when my steering assist fault light came on all of a sudden I had no control of my steering in my car luckily I was able to run off the grassy part of the road to stop. I have been reading other complaints about faulty power steering problems in 2012 Ford Focus. I'm thankful I was able to stop my car safely but someone else may not be so lucky. Please recall this problem before more people lose their life's over something can needs to be fixed cause there is a problem here.
My power assist steering fault light came on a couple different times and the steering became extremely difficult to control. I had to restart my vehicle to fix the problem. Took the car into the dealer ship and was told the steering gear would need to be replaced for $1850. The car only has 77,000 miles on it. A repair like this should not be necessary. I did some research and realized this is a very common safety hazard many people are having with the Ford Focus. I also found out Ford has recalled several similar makes and models for the same problem but not the Ford Focus. This is a major safety hazard. I was lucky it only happened in my driveway and not while driving on the road. The consumer should not have to pay for a manufacturing defect. Ford needs to own up to the problem and issue a recall for all vehicles before someone gets seriously hurt by this. My car is now out of commission because I cannot afford the steering gear to be replaced and I am to scared to drive it. At this point I have not idea what I am going to do.
I've had my Ford Focus for 6 months. I've experienced recalls on the transmission which I have fixed. Now my steering assist fault light is on and my power steering went out completely while turning into my driveway. This is a major issue. I have noticed that other people have the same issue and many people have been in horrible accidents. What if this was to happen to me and my children? it wouldn't just affect our lives but also our loved ones. I would love to know if there is a recall on this or there is an ability to get my money back on the car.
The electrical power steering malfunction light will illuminate, when this happens this is a sudden complete loss of power steering making it impossible to steer vehicle. This occurred when the vehicle was in park stationary and also while in drive moving. It occasionally would happen. After the third or fourth time, the malfunction light remained illuminated and power steering loss remained despite try to restart car, this final time it did not shut off problem. Took vehicle into Ford where I had to pay for a complete new steering rack and cbm. Cost $2,000 at Ford dealership.
Power steering failure at 83,320 mi. It failed while starting the car. The power steering failure light/warning came on.
