Car gives a code that steering assist has failed when starting car. Sometimes would reset if key turned off and turned back on. This started while under warranty but Ford's techs claimed there was no problem, despite technical service bulletins on the problem. Car will start, but won't steer. Problem was brought to attention of Ford dealer when car was still under warranty, but they have ignored the problem.
The contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. After the vehicle was shifted into the drive or reverse positions, the steering wheel failed and became difficult to maneuver. The power steering default warning message displayed. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. I got in my car, but it in reverse and began backing out of my parking space when my suddenly car lost power. The car was in motion but the steering wheel and brake pedal locked up and I could not steer or stop my car from going backwards and I hit a parked car in the parking deck at school as a result. The code on my dash was (I) steering assist fail. I turned the car off and on several times before the steering wheel and break released and I was able to gain control of the car again. This is the 3rd time in 2 weeks it has done this (Jan 28, Feb 2 and Feb 8). All three times the car has been in motion and in reverse gear. I contacted Ford corporate offices and the Ford dealership where I purchased the car from and they said there is nothing they can do unless the car duplicates the problem in their presence.
Electric assist steering failed after 116,000 due to manufacturers placement of electronic box location 3" (three inches) away from exhaust manifold, thereby destroying electronics inside sealed box. Makes steering extremely difficult. Failure in parking lot and almost caused me to hit a parked car while trying to turn into a parking space.
Driving at night on county road approx 25-30 mph dry pavement went to turn the wheel of the car to follow the road and there was no response from the steering wheel or the brakes. Car went off the road headed for a tree. Went into ditch before steering became available again. In investigating this issue on my own prior to taking to dealer. I have found this to be an issue and even a noted investigation listed or awareness of the highway safety administration. I can tell you there was absolutely zero control of this car at that time. These cars are very dangerous on many levels as they have multiple defective parts. Just call jim o'neal in sellersburg indiana as they have all the records of showing they have almost rebuilt my entire car since I bought new in 2012. Upon being evaluated and driven, with this occurring to the the technician as well at jim o'neal Ford, it was found that the entire steering component had failed and needed to be replaced. Ford is aware of this concern as there have been 2 bulletins sent to their dealership service departments. Documented in research if you look and also told to me verbally by mike albright the service manager at jim o'neal Ford. At no time in the many visits to the repair shop at Ford has anyone mentioned the fact that this could possibly occur or has there been any preventive checks of the system. I really would like this investigated as I do see I am not the only one that has had this issue and was just lucky enough to have not had a serious accident with my children in the car during this latest failure in this car. Ford should be held accountable for producing and not upholding their end of this car as people are being seriously injured.

The vehicle was in motion when a sudden loss in power steering occurred. A "steering assist failure" message appeared on the display. The vehicle had previously been checked at a factory dealership for this issue which appeared intermittently and no apparent problem was found. The epas system is now disabled full time and the vehicle has only 26k miles. It is my understanding that Ford is aware of faulty components/engineering regarding this problem but refuses to recall. A sudden loss of power steering could result in catastrophic consequences and loss of life. Costly repairs would not solve the inherent problems with this system as it would be prone to fail again. Please take action.
Twice in mid September 2016 the message "steering assist service" came up after starting the vehicle and the power steering on the vehicle would not work. The solution seemed to be turning the power off, then restarting the vehicle. After restart the power steering was working again. A visit to the dealer's service department found no problems with the system. My concern is that this is my daughter's car, she's 18 years old and if the steering fails while she's driving, there may be an accident. If Ford recalled other models for the same problem, why won't they recall the Focus and take care of these customers as well?.
Takata recall. The contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign numbers: 15v340000 (steering) and 17v024000 (air bags). The part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and was not able to confirm when the parts would become available. The contact experienced a steering failure while driving 45 mph, in which the steering wheel seized without warning. The failure mileage was unknown. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Upon engine start, electric power steering does not work. After 10 seconds, it works fine. This happens every time the car is started, except sometimes when it is cold outside, it requires a few start/restart cycles for the power steering to start working. This has been going on for the past 15,000 miles, about 10 months. No fault light has ever come on. Steering has never failed while driving. Once the power steering comes on, it stays on for the entire time the ignition is on.
The contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. While driving 25 mph, the steering failed and a "steering assist failed" message displayed. The contact pulled over and turned off the vehicle. When the vehicle was restarted, the steering returned to normal. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 72,000.
During normal operation the "steering assist failure" light came on and the steering locked up. Mileage at time of failure was 82,500. Ford would not cover under warranty. Very dangerous situation.
After starting car a warning bell sounded and notification on dash said "steering assist failure". Called Ford and spoke with service and explained the issue. I gave him my information. He told me that my car was out of warranty and this would be a out of pocket expense for them to even diagnose. He also acknowledged that he has seen a "few" Focus's with the same issue. After researching online there are numerous complaints of the exact same nature. I have called Ford and am awaiting a return call from them. There has been a class action lawsuit filed in California (phillips et al vs Ford motor company) on this same issue. Ford does have a recall on the fusion #15s18 concerning this same malfunction.
Steering assist failed. After multiple restarts it worked again. This has happened now 10 times.
1. Driving on congested interstate highway at 70mph 2. Warning message in dash displayed "driver assistance steering failure" 3. Manually confirmed loss of power steering 4. Drove about 15 miles to a Ford dealer but they were closing for the day 5. Started vehicle and had normal power steering.
Son was driving home when the electronic steering assist failed, making car very hard to control.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. While driving at unknown speeds, the vehicle stuttered and rolled backwards, the steering wheel shook and failed to turn, and the accelerator pedal failed to respond and traveled to the floorboard when it was depressed. In addition, the "transmission ready" indicator illuminated. After the vehicle was restarted, it operated normally. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer (camelback Ford, 1330 e camelback rd, phoenix, az 85014, (602) 635-7551) where it was diagnosed that the transmission clutch needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failures recurred. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to NHTSA. The failure mileage was 77,000. The VIN was not available.
While driving the vehicle the steering failed fortunately I was at my own street and finally got it home by getting my grandson to help me turn the wheels. Took to aamoco they scanned for codes and updated the pcm/tcm. It broke again in 3 days. I was fortunate again I had not left my driveway. This is a safety issue if yo are on a freeway or other roadway where traffic is moving fast. This whole endeavor cost over $2000 to fix. I averted the danger but whose to say others my not.
Started up car and put transmission into reverse. Steering was very difficult. I was able to pull back into driveway. Error message indicated steering assist failure and that service was required. I shut off the car, restarted it, and the steering seemed back to normal.
While backing out of a driveway the steering system failed, I rolled down a hill and into a wooded area. The system gave an indicator light of steering system failure and also the braking system did not engage. I lost complete control of the vehicle.
