3 Brake Light problem of the 2005 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 06/01/2015

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Focus. The contact stated that the middle brake light stopped working due to the wiring harness in the hatchback. Also, the lock on the hatchback did not work properly and the harness leading to the battery needed to be replaced due to the failure within the hatchback. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and repaired. The mechanic stated that the harness for both the battery and hatchback needed replacing due to the failure of the middle brake light. The manufacturer was not notified of the failures. The VIN was invalid. The failure mileage was 187,000.

4 Brake Light problem of the 2006 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/02/2014

The truck latch on my 2006 Ford Focus zxw would not actuate electrically when the button on the fob or on the dash was pressed due to broken wire in a wiring harness running from the interior to the rear hatch door. It would also blow fuse #63 on the back of the interior fuse panel which made replacement difficult (the fuse is really on the back of the fuse box, the manual recommends that only the dealer service or replace this fuse making this issue difficult or impossible to partially resolve immediately). Until this fuse could be replaced, my interior door locks could not be actuated electrically (power locks or fob) which was a safety concern as any children in the back seat could not be easily reached in the event of an emergency. One would need to manually unlock any and all doors from the inside of the vehicle. The culprit was wiring harness that had wires with damage to the insulation and two broken wires. I would be happy to send any and all pictures of the defects. The damage occurs when the harness bends as the rear hatch is shut due to poor design that did not incorporate a stain relief to either end of the harness where maximum bending stresses would occur. The wires may have also shorted affecting the brake light operation, marker lamp operation, and numerous other functions as there are an estimated ten wires that run in parallel in this harness and all wire except two had multiple insulation defects that potentially resulting in shorts. This is a definite safety issue and all harnesses that have the potential for this type of failure should be replaced or repaired immediately.

5 Brake Light problem of the 2007 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 12/27/2012

Dashboard and running lights going out. Replaced blown fuse and then fuse blows again. Opening and closing the hatchback the lights came on and then off again and the replaced fuse was blown. Located a bundle of wires within a rubber hose that runs from the interior roof headline outer rim of the vehicle across to the interior top of the hatchback. We pulled down this rubber protector to find to our complete amazement that the bundle of wires that run to the hatchback brake light and the hatchback windshield wiper was broken and burnt. Thought that there was a possible loose connection that just needed to be snapped back together, but only to find a bundle of broken and burnt wires wrapped tightly together, plus there was no black wiring tape around the wires for extra protection. Just the wires tightly bound together. Little to none flexibility for the bending or movement for these wires. These wires are located in an area where there would be movement due to opening and closing the hatchback. Contacted the local dealership and spoke with the service manager. He stated that the wire bundle have been made short in some vehicles. Our concern:potential fire hazard and still maybe until fixed; concern are for other individuals who may own this type of vehicle that may be transporting passengers (to include children in car seats) in the back seat (which there is no back side passenger doors) that could have a difficult time exiting this vehicle should it go on fire due to these bundle of wires possibly catching on fire and igniting the interior roof headliner of the vehicle. We have not taken our vehicle into the dealership as we are waiting on a response from Ford motor company. Additionally, the dealership stated that we would have to pay a portion to repair (what we believe to be a faulty design and defect) to correct this problem. Pictures available. ## VIN failed ##.

6 Brake Light problem of the 2003 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 12/01/2012

The contact owns a 2003 Ford Focus. While driving approximately 65 mph, the contact attempted to activate the cruise control but the cruise control function had become inoperable. Additionally, the brake lights would not illuminate. The failure recurred intermittently. While parked, the contact was unable to shift the vehicle into park because the gear shifter had become stuck. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician advised the contact that the wiring harness in the tail gate mechanism was causing the failure and would have to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired because the part was no longer available through the manufacturer. The approximate failure mileage was 92,000.

7 Brake Light problem of the 2002 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 09/26/2012

While waiting at a construction site the engine died and would not start (the engine indicator lit). The brake lights, power windows, and rear hatch release also failed to function. The vehicle was towed and the personal mechanic reported the electrical harness to the rear hatch had failed where is passed between the body and the hatch door. The harness electrical insulation was cracked on the entire bundle of wires and shedding fragments causing some wires to short, the 15 amp fuse for the brake lights had evidence of heating, but did not blow, rather, wires leading to the brake pedal sensor, the 15 amp fuse, and along the harness back to the short in the rear wiring harness near the center brake light had discolored and were melted in some segments. Ford customer service said to consult a Ford service center to determine if there was a manufacturing defect. The Ford service representative said he had seen this before and said it was not a manufacturing defect, rather it was a design defect that occurs after 10 years or more.

8 Brake Light problem of the 2006 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 08/02/2010

I have a 2006 Ford Focuszx3 with 58,000 miles. I recently took the car to the dealership for a tune up/oil change and it was noted that the 3rd brakelight was out. I bought bulbs to replace them and upon opening the 3rd brake light cover realized the housing which holds the bulbs is plastic, 2 of the bulbs had melted to the plastic, the other 3 bulbs were loose inside the cover after the plastic melted and caused them to fall out. I returned to the dealership showing them the part to which they stated "there are no recalls on this and the part is $49". I have seen several hatchback models such as my own with 3rd brake lights burnt out. I think this matter should be addressed as the consumers should not be responsible for the cost of repairing a problem which is obviously a defect and a safety hazard.

9 Brake Light problem of the 2006 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 06/25/2010

My 2006 Focus zx5 started intermittantly unlocking the hatchback when I stepped on the brake pedal. I was driving on the freeway when I pulled over to take a phone call. I left the car in drive with my foot on the brake pedal. After about 5 minutes I completed my call and merged back into traffic. When I reached my destination I parked my car and got out. I returned to my car, started the engine and could not get the gear shift out of park. I had someone watch my brake lights while I stepped on the brake pedal. The lights did not work and I found the fuse for the brake lights was bad. I took a fuse from another circuit and got home. I had been driving for 20 miles with no brake lights. I took the car to a Ford dealer and they found a broken wire and 6 other wires with cracking insulation. They said they fixed the problem and the car worked ok. In January of 2013 I noticed after closing my hatchback and getting in the car my the "door open" indicator stayed on. I checked all doors and the hatchback and all were closed. After finding out on-line that there have been complaints about the Focus wiring since the 2000 models, I took off the carbody end of the rubber conduit to the hatchback. I found a broken wire (fixed my door open indicator problem when I repaired it) and 6 wires with black electical tape on them. I found that the electrical tape is wearing through just like the wire insulation did. I contacted the dealer and complained about the half ass repair they did. The service manager stated that was the repair authorized by the extended warranty. I asked what repair was authorized by the original warrenty and he said the same repair. Ford has known that this harness is a problem since 2000 and I was told they are still using the wiring in their 2013's. Why haven't these cars been recalled!.

10 Brake Light problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 05/20/2010

Fuse to vehicle running lights keeps blowing. Headlights still work but all other exterior lights go out. Result is driving at night with only headlights and brake lights. 14 Brake Light problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 12/09/2004

I have had more repairs incidences with 2001 Ford Focus than is normal on any car. If most of the repairs had been in the first 18 months I could have easily declared a lemon. Unfortunatley they have been since that time. Most recently I have had the rear wheel bearings replaced for the second time on a 3 year old car and am in the process of having the steering column replaced for the second time. I went through over 3 full sets of tire in less than a year and a half. And less than a year ago I got pulled over by the police because I had absolutely no lights in the back of my vehicle. Ford dealer charged me to replace the rear light housing and some wire that had shorted out.

16 Brake Light problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 09/08/2003

2001 Ford Focus sw right rear brake light quit working. Tried to follow the procedure in the owner's manual to replace bulb. Took the opportunity to try to replace left bulb. Neither bulb socket would come out of their respective lamp assemblies. Accidently broke-off the bulb holder from the left socket. The bulb and its holder fell into the lamp assembly. This exposed the lamp assembly fitting to view. It was melted. Therefore, it is impossible to change a burnt bulb because the lamp assembly was too distorted from melting to free the socket. The lights were subject to normal use. The terms socket and lamp assembly are as used in the owner's manual.

17 Brake Light problem of the 2003 Ford Focus
