2 Headlight Switch problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 06/24/2016

2012 Ford Focus. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle headlights will not switch to bright. The consumer stated the headlights remained on dim and she was unable to switch them off and they would come on, when the vehicle was started. The vehicle was taken to the dealer repeatedly for the defect. On the last occasions, the vehicle functioned normally for a few days, but returned to its original problem within a few days. Additionally, there were two incidents, where the headlights simply ceased to work while driving at night.

3 Headlight Switch problem of the 2005 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 11/27/2013

Referring to case # [xxx]. Upon further inspection it was determined that the root cause of the short was in fact the small bundle of wires going into the liftgate. Repairs have been made to all affected wires. Including installation of a brand new headlight switch Ford certified. Cost of repairs 2347 dollars and 97 cents. Upon reading other complaints on this website I've seen at least 40 other cases caused by the same bundle of wires. This is very dangerous and as you can see could potentially cause a vehicle to burst into flames while driving. Something's gotta be done. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

4 Headlight Switch problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 11/01/2012

Headlight failure. With engine running, when the headlight switch is turned on, the headlights (both) do not always go on. Also, after being on for a while (often within 10 minutes, almost always within 20 minutes), both headlights will suddenly turn off on their own. When headlights go off, dashboard lights, and other outside lights, remain on. When the switch is on, but headlights have gone off, if the high beams are toggled on and then off, the headlights will go on (for a while). This sequence occurs repeatedly. Unless it is dark (e. G. If in twilight or in daytime rain), or unless I can see the headlight reflections, I have no way of knowing the status of my headlights. Dealership initially replaced a relay, without solving problem. Dealership then replaced the "multi-function switch" controlling turn signals and high beams, with seeming success. I am in possession of the failed original-equipment "multi-function switch". Dealership was understanding and helpful, but would not treat this intermittent, sudden, repeated headlight failure as a critical safety issue under warranty. This vehicle has been subject to gas pump failure, and to front suspension spring breakage, which were covered under warranty. [note also that car design does not allow headlights to turn on or stay on when engine is off - this may save accidental battery drain, but deprives operator of illumination or signaling ability that may be needed in emergency situations. ].

5 Headlight Switch problem of the 2004 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 05/15/2008

1) turned headlight swith to "on" on my 2004 Ford Focus ztw 2) turning the headlights on caused the rear hatch to open uncommanded. 3) I removed the cover from the hatch and disconnected the wiper motor and latch unlock solenoid connectors. Then, to find the possible problem, I inspected the wire bundle in the area of the hatch hinge and found several wires frayed and broken. So turning on the headlights apparently sent a signal (short) to the latch solenoid. A friend had a similar problem. His hatch would pop open when the ignition was turned to start the car. Two dealers told me they would not be of any help unless I paid at least $350 to repair the problem. This is a safety issue. Remeber the chysler Mini van hatch recall? I have been watching the Toyota sua hearings and decided to challenge you guys and see if you would review and contact me as mr. Lahood said you would. I know you are busy and understaffed. I do not blame you as some are intent upon. I spent my life as an a&p mechanic at american airlines and know the importance of safety. Thanks for reading and hope to hear from you soon. Ps Ford has had knowledge of this problem in other model years of the Focus.

6 Headlight Switch problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 04/15/2005

2000 Ford Focus. Consumer smelled something burning while driving and continued to drive for about a mile. Stopped vehicle, got out, and there was a strong smell, but was unable to detect from where the smell was coming. A couple days later went to park vehicle in garage and noticed that both headlights were out of place. Upon inspection noted a melting of the mounts and housing, and the bulb holder was loose, spring was not efficient enough to withstand jarring. Consumer felt this happened because consumer had to drive over several railroad tracks, and felt this could have loosened these parts. No repairs done. Took vehicle to dealer for a pricing of the repairs, which was $60 each headlight, and dealer did not specify why this occurred.
