Fuel pump failure at only 65297 . Fuel system has no sign of foreign matter in tank. Car was running fine before fuel pump failure. Cost to replace fuel pump and labor cost of dropping exhaust system and protective metal shield to gain access to fuel tank . Fuel tank must be removed to repair. No engine light came on prior to car not starting while in my driveway. This is a outrageous repair for a car with such good maintenance . I request an investigation into defective fuel pumps on this year and model car.

14 Fuel Pump problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 12/03/2011

Going uphill on freeway, the car started lurching. The lurching was intermittent as it would run smooth again and started lurching. I experienced a loss of power going uphill until I went down to 3rd and second gear. I had the fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel pump relay replaced. The symptoms are very similiar to recall number #03v482000(2001 Ford Focus fuel system recall). I called Ford about this recall, they looked up my VIN number and said told me there is no recall for my vehicle.

20 Fuel Pump problem of the 2003 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 05/20/2011

Having an ongoing stalling problem starting on 5/20/11. Situation usually happens in the afternoon after doing just a couple of local, short distance errands. The car will start but immediately stall after taking foot off the gas. Usually starts after waiting @ 45 minutes/amount of time it takes tow truck to arrive (towed 5x, 1 time was able to drive after 45 minutes). Replaced fuel filter, fuel pump, oxygen sensors (twice), fuel pump driver by regular mechanic. Has happened three times in past two weeks: brought it to local Ford dealership to see if they can diagnose the problem. The latest time this has happened, after the fuel pump driver was replaced, I was able to do four errands before the stalling occurred. Also, I was able to put the car in drive by keeping one foot on the gas while the other foot was on the brake and continue moving until braking for a stop sign/traffic signal, at which point it would stall. Nine "stalls" later I made it home; an "improvement" over being stranded at the post office or the mall but certainly not acceptable. The dealership has called to say they think it is the fuel pump and want to replace it with a "genuine Ford part," as opposed to aftermarket part my regular mechanic probably used. I hope this is the end of the "replacing parts" routine but am not optimistic due to other complaints I have read concerning this problem.

21 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 03/17/2011

On March 17, 2011, my 2002 Ford Focus suddenly stalled out as I was accelerating uphill, turning right on a ramp to enter a busy highway. Fuel tank was about â¼. I restarted the engine a couple times, but it stalled out again after a few seconds. It was potentially a dangerous situation, but luckily I was able to roll the car back downhill to a safer location. (later I learned that an identical scenario is described in Ford dealer letter 03n01, in which Ford agrees to replace fuel delivery modules for 2000 and 2001 models, but not 2002. ) I had the car towed to a Ford dealer, but they were not able to look at it till the next morning, at which time the car started fine. Ford ran many tests, including electrical and mechanical, took it out for 3 – 4 test drives and could not find a problem. They charged $150 for the diagnostic labor. This car has done this every year now for the past 3 years. Similar, but not identical, stalls occurred on March 16, 2009, March 10, 2010 and March 17, 2010. Each time, I had to have the car towed. Locations were different, so it was always a different shop. None of them were able to look at it right away, and by the time they looked at it the next day, they could not find the problem. However, each one charged about $150 labor. Those 3 incidents also required a new 15 amp fuse for the fuel pump, perhaps because of the repeated unsuccessful efforts to restart the car after it stalled. This year, I stopped trying to restart after 4 unsuccessful efforts. The fuse did not blow this year. In between these stallouts, usually exactly one year apart, the engine has started and run smoothly, with no indication of problems. Each time a stall has happened, the car has worked fine the next day, without any addition of fuel. This indicates that it is not a problem with the quality or quantity of fuel in the tank. The only explanation that I can see for these unpredictable failures is a defect in the fuel delivery system.

23 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 01/28/2011

2002 Focus, stalling out at high speed with no warning. When it happens it's like trying to drive a car without a battery. Nothing works. Happened 10 times in a car with less than 70k miles. We replaced fuel pump, fuel filters, coil, spark plugs and wires, and car will not stay running. Keeps stalling. How many complaints before this model is recalled. Someone is going to die at some point since the car cannot be controlled by the driver when this phenomenom occurs. Ford says there is no known problem with this model. I shouldn't have to replace a fuel pump on a car with less than 70kon it. Ford did change the fuel delivery module for other years but says the problem was not on 2002 model. Obviously they changed it for a reason. This model needs to be recalled and have the "new" fuel delivery module installed.

26 Fuel Pump problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 12/06/2010

I am the original owner of a 2001 Ford Focus purchased in mooresville nc the VIN is #[xxx]. The fuel pump had to be replaced. The pump is the same one described in the Ford extended coverage program03n01 dated 2003 and supplements 1 & 2 dated January 2004. Ford said my was not covered under the program because it was built in Aug. 2001 after June 13, 2001 cut off. The car was built in the wayne assembly plant, the location of the fuel pumps that fail. After more search on the internet , my husband found a technical service bulletin article #04-5-6 describing the procedure for installing a new design fuel delivery module in the 2001-2002 Ford Focus. Under the issue it states: there is a new design fueled delivery module available for service on 2000-2002 Focus built before 12/31/2001 at wayne assembly plant and built before 2/13/2001 at hermosillo plant. The Ford motor company said that my does not qualify for the extended coverage program as it was built in Aug. 2001. We think that because the car this the pump described in the bulletin, was built at the wayne assembly plant within 2 mos. Of the June 13, 2001 that Ford could have cove the repair but the company will not. This is an $800 repair. The steering column locking key cylinder is also in need of replacement again. I need to turn the key manually back to a neutral position for the engine to run after starting the car. This is the third locking cylinder that I have had installed in my car. I think four cylinder is a little much for a 9 year old car! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
